Eiland Center Library

News for September

Miracle Creek by Angie Kim takes place in a small town in Virginia, where a group of people know each other because they’re part of a special treatment center, a hyperbaric chamber that may cure a range of conditions. But when the chamber explodes and two people die, it’s clear the explosion wasn’t an accident. This is a novel about parents, children, and the unwavering hope of a better life, even when all hope seems lost. It’s also an intricately plotted courtroom thriller, filled with people doing foolish things for noble reasons.

The Inn by James Patterson is another of his fast paced, summer thrillers with a strong group of characters who are shocked when their seafront town is targeted by vicious criminals. The Inn at Gloucester stands alone on the rocky shoreline and its solitary inhabitants will have to learn that their only choice is between standing together -- or dying alone.

Chances Are by Richard Russo follows three men who convene on Martha's Vineyard, friends ever since meeting in college in the sixties. They couldn't have been more different then, or even today. As they reunite and reminisce, you learn of a mysterious death that affected all of them years ago. It’s a slower paced mystery, filled with father and son relationships, unrequited love, New England small-town living, and the hiccups of aging. In the final stretch, surprising, long-kept secrets are revealed.

The Lager Queen of Minnesota by J. Ryan Stradal is a novel of family, Midwestern values, hard work, fate and the secrets of making a world-class beer. Using a cast of lovable, funny, quintessentially American characters eager to make their mark in a world that's often stacked against them, it’s a deeply affecting family saga filled with surprise and delight.

Careful What You Wish For by Hallie Ephron uses a professional organizer who helps people declutter their lives as her main character. Unfortunately, she is married to man who can’t drive past a yard sale without stopping. After commiserating with a new client, she finds herself in a mess that might just be too big for her to clean up.

Musings from the Highlands Library

Back to school! You know what comes to my mind when I think of school? Curiosity! What a wonderful attribute we have—CURIOSITY. And it is something that we can use regardless of our age. I once had a boss who said, “You always ask why.” Of course, I did. How else would I learn all the “ins” and “outs” of my job!

You know what is so great about the library? It provides a way for me to satisfy my curiosity about all kinds of things. I was on the search for books about “wonder” the other day. I found some good ones:

Small Wonder by Barbara Kingsolver—It is a series of essays about all kinds of fun topics.

Sense of Wonder by Rachel Carson—It is an oversize book with many nature photos—a classic in its field.

State of Wonder by Ann Patchett—A novel

Lies You Learned in School by Michael Powell—all kinds of curiosities and wonders. Did you know that 2 + 2 does not always equal 4?

My curiosity has caused me to wonder about what our residents want in our Highlands Library. Did you get a copy of the Library Survey in your mailbox? Did you turn it in at the Highlands or Corson Lobby receptionist desk? Be sure to do it by SEPTEMBER 6th. It will help us answer a whole lot of “what’s” and “how’s” for both the Highlands Library and Eiland Center Library.

Oh, and we have been wondering about something else. Did you know that there are magazines on both sides of the Highlands Library? Everyone always sees the ones on the left side when they get off the elevator. But be sure to check out the right side, also. And thanks for bringing them back to the library when you finish reading them so others from around the campus can enjoy them too. The Highlands Library is a wonderful way to keep up with your favorite magazines and not have to buy a subscription! A special thanks goes to all those who willingly donate their magazines to our library. We have a great variety because of your faithful giving.

So, in the month of September, the challenge is to let your “wondering” take you to the library to learn something new!
