Police and Residents Party Together on Night Out

Against Crime

The Town of Guttenberg celebrated Night Out 2019 with a fun street party on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019 in the parking lot of GSL Bank on Madison Street. There were plenty of free activities for kids, including three bounce houses and giveaways, while adults were treated to a live concert by the band Finish This.

Mayor Wayne Zitt was on hand to greet attendees, along with Council Members Monica Fundora and John Habermann. And so were the members of the Guttenberg Police Department, building relationships and creating new ones with local residents.

National Night Out was founded 36 years ago as a way to forge a stronger relationship between the community and the police officers who patrol the streets every day. Across the country, events take place on the first Tuesday in August with the goal of bringing police and residents together in a positive environment.

Also attending the event this year and providing handouts and giveaways were the Hudson County Improvement Authority (HCIA), North Hudson Community Action Corporation (NHCAC), and WellCare. The “Guttenberg Trolley” supplied hot dogs, and Mikey’s Ice Cream truck handed out free soft ice cream cones.

Quality of life is something we take very seriously in Guttenberg, and for that reason we will be increasing our enforcement of regulations requiring trash to be placed in receptacles and not simply left on sidewalks to be picked up by the DPW. Loose trash is not only an eyesore, it’s an invitation to rodents and other vermin, and we are dedicated to keeping our streets clean and safe. Please be sure to use trash receptacles to avoid a potential summons. Inside this issue you can read about new safety regulations for smoke detectors, as well as the usual roundup of articles on recent and upcoming events. Summer may be officially over, but we still have one more concert in our annual summer series, and it’s a big one: Latin Night on Sept. 14. Sadly, in this issue we also pay tribute to former Councilman Al Caso, a truly great man who passed away recently. Al made a big mark on this town and we all owe him a tremendous debt.

Former Councilman Al Caso Passes Away

Former Guttenberg Councilman Alfonso “Al” Caso passed away on July 25 at Holy Name Medical Center, Teaneck, NJ. He was 75 years old.

Born in New York City to parents Jennie (Modugno) and Carmine Caso, Al proudly served our country in the United States Airforce from 1961 to 1965. He was a Guttenberg resident since 1993 and served on Town Council from 2008 until Dec. 31, 2018, when he retired.

Mayor Wayne Zitt wrote on Facebook, “It is with great sorrow that I tell you we lost an amazing man from Guttenberg. Councilman Al Caso was an incredible person. Al was always looking to move Guttenberg forward. He will be greatly missed. No more suffering Al, we love you. R.I.P.”

“Al from the moment I met him was a true gentleman,” said Councilman John Habermann, who joined the town council a month after Al. “The most down-to-earth guy you could ever meet, and one of the most knowledgeable people. Always quick with a smile and a joke, with a little twinkle in his eye.”

“He was a great guy, a team player,” added Councilwoman Monica Fundora. “We learned a lot from him. He’s going to be missed.”

Calling him a “great leader,” Mayor Zitt noted that Al “made sure the town was fiscally responsible for its residents,” and assisted former Mayor Gerald Drasheff in the complicated and protracted orchestration of building of the community center and Anna L. Klein School annex.

“We will continue to move forward off his legacy,” said Mayor Zitt.

Al Caso is survived by his sisters, Clara Arensman and Anna Caso, his brother, Joseph Caso, and many nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and -nephews.

Hundreds Attend Resource Center’s ‘Healing in

North Hudson’ Event

The lower level of the Galaxy Mall was packed on Wednesday, July 31 with nearly 30 vendor tables and hundreds of local residents. The occasion was “Healing in North Hudson,” a holistic health event co-sponsored by the Guttenberg Resource Center and the North Hudson Partnership.

The event was organized to bring together representatives from the many different government, public, and private community organizations throughout the five municipalities of North Hudson that provide health and wellness options for residents. Specifically designed as a “stigma-free” event, it targeted mental health among the top priorities for personal well-being and development.

The North Hudson Partnership, comprising many of the participating organizations, already collaborated over the summer with the North Bergen Free Public Library to host Mental Health Meet & Greets on the first Wednesday of each month, with similar events taking place on subsequent Wednesdays in West New York, Weehawken, and Union City.

Since July had a fifth Wednesday, a “capstone event” was planned, according to Troy Mack from Weehawken Human Services, who coordinated the event. The goal was to bring together all varieties of specialization for a one-stop opportunity to access local health options, including such components as addiction, substance abuse, suicide prevention, homelessness, LGBTQ+ issues, and more.

A free photo booth allowed attendees to contribute their anonymous silhouettes to a group project entitled “Mental health has no face, just a heart,” and to take home their own silhouette photo. The Resource Center provided everyone with free empanadas, sandwiches, wraps, drinks, and snacks.

The participating organizations were Clear Captions, Council on Compulsive Gambling, Family Partners of Hudson County, Galaxy Yoga and Meditation, Guttenberg Resource Center, Hackensack Meridian Health - Palisades Medical Center, Hudson County Consumer Protection Office, Hudson County Department of Family Services, Hudson County Mental Health Administrator, Hudson County Sheriff’s Office, Hudson Partnership CMO, Hudson PRIDE, Hudson SPEAKS, Inter-County Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse, New Jersey Division of Child Protection & Permanency, New Jersey Judiciary, Hudson Vicinage, Nikita’s Salon, North Bergen Health Department, North Bergen Public Library, Northeast New Jersey Legal Services, North Hudson Community Action Corporation, North Hudson Partnership, Our Team Works, Inc., PACO Agency, Palisades Family Success Center, Swag Fitness, Tilton Gym, Urban League of Hudson County, and Weehawken Human Services.

Bon Jovi Tribute Band Rocks Waterfront Park

The Bon Jovi tribute band “Slippery When Wet” had the crowd on its feet and cheering during their live performance in Waterfront Park on Tuesday, July 30. The band played a solid set of Bon Jovi favorites, with the audience singing along and dancing to the big hits.

Mayor Wayne Zitt and the Guttenberg Town Council were joined by Sen. Nicholas Sacco in introducing the concert. Also welcoming the crowd were Freeholder Anthony Vainieri and Assemblypersons Angelica Jimenez and Pedro Mejia.

Food trucks were on site to provide tasty snacks while residents enjoyed the concert in the amphitheater or played in the children’s playground.

Slippery When Wet is fronted by Jon Bon Jovi lookalike Jason Morey and has played over 1500 shows throughout the U.S., plus Africa, Mexico, Singapore, Puerto Rico, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic. They have headlined on over 60 cruises on the Royal Caribbean cruise line and played the pre-game of Super Bowl 48 in MetLife Stadium.

This was the fourth concert of the 2019 Guttenberg Summer Concert series. Still to come is the much-anticipated Latin Night at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14. The show will take place on the big stage at 70th Street and Boulevard East.

Salvadorian Independence to be Celebrated with Annual Parade Through Guttenberg on Sept. 15

The annual Salvadorian Parade will march through Guttenberg on Sunday, Sept. 15, bringing out a crowd of enthusiastic spectators and supporters dressed in blue and waving Salvadorian flags. Many Guttenberg dignitaries will march in the parade, alongside representatives from neighboring communities.

El Salvador achieved its independence from Spain 198 years ago when the Central American Independence Act was signed on September 15, 1821. To celebrate this momentous anniversary, colorful floats, elaborate costumes, and festive music will fill Bergenline Avenue as the parade proceeds from Braddock Park in North Bergen to 43rd Street in Union City.

Dozens of Activities Put Smiles on Faces for 1st

Annual Makerfest

The Guttenberg Resource Center celebrated its first anniversary by holding a “Makerfest” that filled the entire lower level of the Galaxy Towers mall with games and activities for kids and families. Hundreds of residents from Guttenberg and North Bergen attended the four-hour event and left with souvenirs, snacks, and big smiles.

Mayor Wayne Zitt attended with his family and met with many of the residents who came out to enjoy the wide variety of activities. Councilwoman Monica Fundora proved to be an accomplished hula-hooper, while fellow Council Members Richie Delafuente and John Habermann and Town Administrator Cosmo Cirillo cheered her on.

Meanwhile Library Director Sai Rao and her staff provided table after table of hands-on activities to promote the act of making, utilizing everything from traditional paint on paper to a 3D printer. Among the options available were

NJ Regulations Now Require 10-Year Sealed Batteries in Smoke Detectors

The State of New Jersey changed its regulations this year regarding home smoke detectors, requiring that units now have 10-year sealed batteries rather than disposable batteries. This change was implemented to ensure that smoke alarms are more dependable and effective.

In the past, units contained disposable batteries that could wear out in a year or two, requiring replacement. Sometimes residents removed batteries for various reasons, for example when cooking, or to use the battery in another type of appliance. Firefighters have reported many instances of fires where an alarm at the premises was disabled due to battery issues, allowing the fire to spread before anyone was alerted.

The change in the state’s uniform construction code, which took effect on Jan. 1, requires smoke alarms to have sealed lithium batteries with a 10-year lifespan. Any residences being sold or rented require inspection by fire officials, and will not be approved if they do not contain the currently required units.

Residents should also be aware that older smoke detectors have an expected lifespan of only eight to 10 years, as per the manufacturers. (Look on the back of your units for details and date of manufacture.) Older units should be replaced and the new ones should meet the updated state requirements.

Concert Series to Conclude with Latin

Night on Sept. 14

The summer concert season in Guttenberg is drawing to a close, after five terrific live shows at three different locations throughout town.

Upcoming on Saturday night, Sept. 14 is the big one, the show everybody has been waiting for, the sendoff party of the season: Latin Night. An annual tradition in Guttenberg, Latin Night always brings out a huge crowd. Boulevard East fills up with residents cheering from their seats and dancing in the streets.

This year’s featured performer is singer and percussionist Jose Fajardo Jr, the son of acclaimed Cuban flautist and bandleader Jose Fajardo Sr. After his father’s death in 2001, Jose Fajardo Jr became the director of the orchestra his father established in 1949, helping to change the traditional sound of charanga music to salsa for a new generation. He has performed and recorded with some of the best Latin musicians of all time and in will be delivering a set of classic Latin rhythms to end the concert season on a high note.

The show takes place at 7 p.m. on Sept. 14 on the big stage at 70th Street and Boulevard East.

Residents played with musical bananas (!), virtual reality, and tried their luck spinning the “BeanBoozled” wheel for a chance at tasty jellybeans – or not-so-tasty flavors like stinky socks and dead fish.

Volunteers from the town staffed additional booths with more activities and handed out free cotton candy, popcorn, water, and snacks. Also on hand was Elisabeth Smolarz to sign up attendees for free “portrait art” photo sessions through Guttenberg Arts, and a photo booth from flashyphotoboothsnj.com, complete with goofy props for residents to pose for unique photos that they could take home for free. Large Crowd Honors Retiring Police Lt. James

Hosie at Retirement ‘Walkout’

Despite inclement weather, a large crowd showed up for the retirement “walkout” of Guttenberg Police Lieutenant James Hosie on Wednesday, July 31. Current and former police officers as well as township workers, friends, and family lined up under tents and in the rain outside police headquarters to honor Lt. Hosie as he made his way out of the building for the last time as a Police Department employee.

Lt. Juan Barrera presented Lt. Hosie with a plaque reading, “In recognition & appreciation of your 25 years of outstanding service & dedication to the citizens of Guttenberg,” and PBA Local 88 presented him with a retirement badge and an honorary folded and framed flag. A bagpiper played to mark the occasion and North Bergen’s Honor Guard stood at attention during the ceremony.

Lt. Hosie started his law enforcement career in August of 1994 with the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office and graduated from the Passaic County Police Academy in February of 1995. He was promoted to detective in 1996.

He also worked with the Somerville Police Department, NJ Transit Police Department, and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Task Force.

He started his Guttenberg police career in 1998 as a patrolman, before being promoted to sergeant in 2010. In 2018 he was promoted to his current rank of lieutenant and was assigned to run the department’s Internal Affairs Unit, as well as handling various administrative assignments.

Lt. Hosie was the department’s training officer, firearms instructor, accreditation manager, municipal counterterrorism coordinator, deputy coordinator of the Office of Emergency Management, as well as being assigned program management.

During his tenure he accumulated several departmental awards and commendations including a Life-Saving Award for saving an individual who attempted to commit suicide in the Hudson River.

As Lt. Barrera stated, Lt. Hosie will be greatly missed by the Town of Guttenberg, its Police Department, and its residents.

Cientos de Personas Asisten al Evento “Curación en el Norte de Hudson” del Centro de Recursos

El nivel inferior del Galaxy Mall estaba lleno el Miércoles 31 de Julio con casi 30 mesas de vendedores y cientos de residentes locales. La ocasión fue “Curación en el Norte de Hudson”, un evento holístico de salud copatrocinado por el Centro de Recursos Guttenberg y la Asociación North Hudson.

El evento se organizó para reunir a representantes de las diferentes organizaciones comunitarias gubernamentales, públicas y privadas en los cinco municipios de North Hudson que brindan opciones de salud y bienestar para los residentes. Específicamente diseñado como un evento “libre de estigma”, apuntó a la salud mental entre las principales prioridades para el bienestar y el desarrollo personal.

Banda de Tributo a Bon Jovi Sacude Al Parque Waterfront

Selladas de 10 Años en Detectores de Humo

El estado de Nueva Jersey cambió sus regulaciones este año con respecto a los detectores de humo domésticos, lo que exige que las unidades ahora tengan baterías selladas de 10 años en lugar de baterías desechables. Este cambio se implementó para garantizar que las alarmas de humo sean más confiables y efectivas.

En el pasado, las unidades contenían baterías desechables que podrían desgastarse en uno o dos años, lo que requiere su reemplazo. A veces, los residentes sacaban las baterías por varios motivos, por ejemplo, al cocinar, o para usar la batería en otro tipo de aparato. Los bomberos han reportado muchos casos de incendios en los que se deshabilitó una alarma en las instalaciones debido a problemas con la batería, lo que permitió que el incendio se extendiera antes de que alguien fuera alertado.

El cambio en el código de construcción uniforme del estado, que entró en vigencia el 1 de Enero, requiere que las alarmas de humo tengan baterías de litio selladas con una vida útil de 10 años. Cualquier residencia que se venda o alquile requiere inspección por parte de los bomberos, y no se aprobará si no contiene las unidades actualmente requeridas.

Los residentes también deben ser conscientes de que los detectores de humo más antiguos tienen una vida útil esperada de solo ocho a 10 años, según los fabricantes. Las unidades más antiguas deben reemplazarse y las nuevas deben cumplir con los requisitos estatales actualizados.

Caras para la 1ª Edición Anual de Makerfest

El Centro de Recursos Guttenberg celebró su primer aniversario celebrando un “Makerfest” que llenó todo el nivel inferior del centro comercial Galaxy Towers con juegos y actividades para niños y familias. Cientos de residentes de Guttenberg y North Bergen asistieron al evento de cuatro horas y se fueron con recuerdos, bocadillos y grandes sonrisas.

El Alcalde Wayne Zitt asistió con su familia y se reunió con muchos de los residentes que salieron a disfrutar de la gran variedad de actividades. La Independencia Salvadoreña se Celebrará con un Desfile Anual a Través de Guttenberg el 15 de Septiembre

El Desfile anual salvadoreño marchará a través de Guttenberg el Domingo 15 de Septiembre, atrayendo a una multitud de entusiastas espectadores y simpatizantes vestidos de azul y ondeando banderas Salvadoreñas. Muchos dignatarios de Guttenberg marcharán en el desfile, junto con representantes de las comunidades vecinas.

El Salvador logró su independencia de España hace 198 años cuando se firmó la Ley de Independencia de Centroamérica el 15 de Septiembre de 1821. Para celebrar este aniversario trascendental, carrozas coloridas, trajes elaborados y música festiva llenarán la avenida Bergenline a medida que el desfile se desarrolla desde el Parque Braddock en North Bergen hasta calle 43 en Union City.

Latina el 14 de Septiembre

La temporada de conciertos de verano en Guttenberg está llegando a su fin, después de cinco espectáculos en vivo en tres lugares diferentes de la ciudad.

Próximamente el Sábado por la noche, 14 de Septiembre es el gran evento, el espectáculo que todos han estado esperando, la fiesta de despedida de la temporada: Noche Latina. Una tradición anual en Guttenberg, Noche Latina siempre atrae a una gran multitud. Boulevard East se llena de residentes animando desde sus asientos y bailando en las calles.

El intérprete destacado de este año es el cantante y percusionista José Fajardo Jr., hijo del aclamado flautista y director de orquesta cubano José Fajardo Sr. Después de la muerte de su padre en 2001, José Fajardo Jr. se convirtió en el director de la orquesta que su padre estableció en 1949, ayudando a cambiar el Sonido tradicional de la música charanga a la salsa para una nueva generación. Ha actuado y grabado con algunos de los mejores músicos latinos de todos los tiempos y estará entregando un conjunto de ritmos latinos clásicos para terminar la temporada de conciertos con una nota alta.

Gran Multitud Rinde Homenaje al Teniente Retirado de la Policía James Hosie en la

Retirada de “Salida”

A pesar de las inclemencias del tiempo, una gran multitud se presentó para la “retirada” del teniente de la policía de Guttenberg James Hosie el Miércoles 31 de Julio. Agentes de policía actuales y anteriores, así como trabajadores del municipio, amigos y familiares formados bajo carpas y bajo la lluvia. fuera del cuartel general de la policía para honrar al teniente Hosie mientras salía del edificio por última vez como empleado del Departamento de Policía.

El Teniente Juan Barrera presentó al Teniente Hosie con una placa que decía: “En reconocimiento y agradecimiento por sus 25 años de servicio y dedicación sobresalientes a los ciudadanos de Guttenberg”, y el Local 88 de la PBA le entregó una insignia de jubilación y un doblado y enmarcado honorario bandera. Un gaitero tocó para conmemorar la ocasión y la Guardia de Honor de North Bergen se destacó durante la ceremonia.

El teniente Hosie comenzó su carrera policial en Agosto de 1994 con la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Hudson y se graduó de la Academia de Policía del Condado de Passaic en Febrero de 1995. Fue ascendido a detective en 1996.

También trabajó con el Departamento de Policía de Somerville, el Departamento de Policía de Tránsito de NJ y el Equipo Especial de Narcóticos de la Fiscalía del Condado de Hudson.

Comenzó su carrera policial en Guttenberg en 1998 como patrullero, antes de ser ascendido a sargento en 2010. En 2018 fue ascendido a su rango actual de teniente y fue asignado para dirigir la Unidad de Asuntos Internos del departamento, además de manejar varias tareas administrativas.

El teniente Hosie era el oficial de capacitación del departamento, instructor de armas de fuego, gerente de acreditación, coordinador municipal de lucha contra el terrorismo, coordinador adjunto de la Oficina de Manejo de Emergencias, y también se le asignó la gestión del programa.

Durante su mandato acumuló varios premios y elogios departamentales, incluido un Premio por salvar vidas por salvar a una persona que intentó suicidarse en el río Hudson.

Como dijo el teniente Barrera, el teniente Hosie será extrañado por la ciudad de Guttenberg, su departamento de policía y sus residentes.
