Dear Friends,

I would like to thank everyone who helped make the 2019 Clayton County fair a BIG success! Thanks to the Fair Board, livestock show superintendents, 4-H’ers, leaders, FFA members & advisors, Extension Staff, and all fair volunteers who helped make the fair the success it was and for your support during the whole year “to make the best better!” A big THANK YOU to our summer program assistant– Margo Friedlein for all she did. Plus special thanks to the county council members for their help at the fair and throughout the year.

Now is the time to start making plans for the new year and recruiting new 4-H members. Share what you have experienced and learned and encourage others to become a part of it.

Thank You Cards Are Important

If you receive a trophy at the fair, sell livestock at the auction, or enjoy some free food or ice cream at the fair, please remember to thank the individuals and businesses who donated time, money and trophies by sending them a thank you note. This year we have a number of new sponsors, so please take the time to thank them. Hearing from you will ensure the sponsors to keep on supporting the 4-H program and the county fair. The notes do not have to be long, but should express your experiences and feelings. If you need a name or address for your thank you note, contact your club leaders or the Extension Office.

Clayton County 4-H will be 100 years Old in 2020

Celebrate 100 years of 4-H with Us Throughout 2020

We will be kicking off the celebration at Pizzazz Night on November 17, 2019 and including celebrations throughout all of 2020. We are looking for 4 (four) generation 4-H families. Contact the Extension Office. We want you to share your stories & a four generation picture.

The first Clayton County 4-H clubs were organized in 1920. . The first two clubs were a Purebred Calf Club and a Purebred Gilt Club.

The Purebred Calf Club was a countywide project with 25 members enrolled in this club. A committee was appointed to buy calves for the club. They purchased 19 Shorthorn, 2 Polled Herefords, 2 Milking Shorthorns, and one Aberdeen Angus. The calves were brought to Elkader, appraised and tested for tuberculosis, and drawn by lot. Each member paid the price of the calf which he drew. The average price of these calves was $150. These calves were shown at two fairs in the county--National Fair and Elkader Fair.

The other club, Purebred Gilt Club. The enrollment of the Gilt Club was 72 members. A committee was appointed in each township to manage the work, to assist the boys in procuring their pigs, and to help them in any way necessary. Poland China, Spotted Poland China, Duroc Jersey, and Chester White pigs were selected by the members as projects. The average cost was $25. In October a Club Show and Sale was held. The 57 head sold for an average price of $101.20.

Also in 1920 two Livestock Judging Contests were held at two county fairs. Fifty-two boys and girls entered the contest at the National Fair. Five classes of livestock were judged--dairy cattle, sheep, hors-es, beef cattle, and hogs. The winner of this contest won $50 from the National Fair Board. The second contest was held at the Elkader Fair where 48 youth entered the contest.

Citizenship Informational Meeting is October 20 for the 2021 Trip

This Citizenship program & trip is open to 4-H intermediate and senior-age members currently in grades 7-11. Program will run January 2020 –April 2021.

Be enrolled in the 4-H citizenship project Participate in citizenship education at county and /or multi-county meetings A trip to the Iowa State Capital in Des Moines in March 2020 A trip to Washington DC in March/April 2021 To help you understand more about this 4-H Citizenship program opportunity Clayton County 4-H has scheduled a meeting on Sunday, October 20 at 2:30 PM at the Central State Bank Community Room in Elkader to review the program plan. All 4-H members currently in grades 7-11 are strongly encouraged to consider this opportunity. Parents of 4-H participants are welcome and encouraged to attend with their child. We have limited seats on the bus. Please attend this meeting to express your interest in the 2021 trip.

It’s time to re-enroll in 4-H!

After September 5 we will be accepting 4-H enrollments for

the 2019-20 4-H Year. This re-enrollment process is done online at https://iowa.4honline.com/. Remember new families must complete paper enrollment forms. For more information on re-enrolling in 4-H, check out our website http://www.extension.iastate.edu/clayton/page/join-4-h or contact the Extension Office. It is vital to complete 4-H enrollments before youth are participating in 4-H meetings & activities for insurance coverage. Re-enrollments must be completed by December 31, 2019 to receive the $10 support from Clayton County Extension and Outreach. New members may enroll any time to receive the $10 fee support.

County 4-H Award Applications Due October 1

All 4-H members are encouraged to apply for record keeping system awards and/or project awards. Forms and guidelines are found on the Clayton County web page- www.extension.iastate.edu/clayton/page/member-info. Please read and follow directions! The deadline to apply is October 1. There are four basic county award application areas for Clayton County 4-H’ers to compete in. 1. Junior Record Keeping (4th-6th grades) Evaluation will be a combination of the 4-H'ers complete record keeping system and a personal interview. 2. Intermediate & Senior Record Keeping (7th-12th grades) Evaluation will be based on the record keeping system only. 3. Project Awards (7th-12th grades) Evaluation will be a combination of support material and an in-terview or a video. 4. Club Officer Awards (open to 4-H’ers current-ly holding a local club office) Evaluation is based on support material and a written paragraph about growth & personal development gained.

State Fair exhibits have been returned to the Extension Office and are ready for pick up. Please do so as soon as possible as there are meetings scheduled in the meeting room and space is limited.

October 4-H Promotion National 4-H Week is October 6-12. We’re all in this to make the best better; doing so means being innovative. This year we are having different contests to get everyone excited about promoting 4-H.

4-H Club Promotion Contest

Clayton County 4-H Clubs are encouraged to market & promote the 4-H program and their club through-out the month of October. It could be as simple as putting up a display in your community. Be creative! Make sure to include how to get more information about 4-H – like our 4-H web page or phone num-ber, club and leader contact information, etc.

Criteria for judging will be:

Does it promote 4-H?

Does it show the diversity of the 4-H program?

Does it encourage youth of all ages to join 4-H?

Is it appealing to the audience?

Clubs will be asked to submit a summary of what they did and how they felt it impacted the community. If possible include photos. Deadline is October 20. The winning promotion will receive $25.

Wear your 4-H shirt

During 4-H week October 6-12 wear your 4-H shirt, take a selfie and post on the Clayton County 4-H Facebook page. Your name will be entered in a drawing for a $10 Subway gift card.

Poster Contest

Create a poster promoting 4-H, display it in a public place (school, business, etc.) , take a picture of it being displayed and email it to tamuller@iastate.edu by October 21. Please include your name, club and the display location in the email. Poster should visually tell a story or ideas about 4-H to the general public. Poster may be any size and done in any medium: watercolor, ink, rayon, acrylic, charcoal, oils, collage, etc. Winner will receive a $10 Subway gift certificate.

4-H Member Recruitment It is that time of the year to work on new 4-H recruits for the coming 4-H year. We need to continually keep our membership alive and growing with new members and new families. Our county 4-H program is top-notch and we need to be sure to share it with others. Personally contact friends or families in your club area and invite them to your next meeting. Get your whole club involved- it is not just the leaders’ responsibility but each club member’s responsibility to help their club grow and prosper. Encourage others to join.

Our goal for 2020 is 370 Clayton County 4-H members!

4-H Archery Clinic

Clayton County will be having an archery workshop on Sunday, September 15 from 1-3 pm at the county fairgrounds in National. Anyone interested in archery, is welcome to attend. Workshop will be held rain or shine. If you have your own equipment, please feel free to bring it.

Livestock Judging

12 Clayton County 4-H members participated in the state 4-H livestock judging contest on August 24 in Ames. Participating were Keegan Echard, Amelya Weigand, Ty Echard, Marcus Gaul, Peyton Gaul, Mia Gibson, Jacob Schilling, Mason Kishman Elijah Keck, Nathanial Gaul, Marin Gaul and Brooke Hansel.

The Purpose of 4-H Record Keeping

The purpose of 4-H record keeping is to teach youth how

to keep records, which is an important life skill. Record

keeping is an ongoing process that does not end when the

4-H year ends.

4-H Member record books are due to your leader by

September 15.

Leaders should review each record book and complete

and sign a participation guide. 4-H leaders will submit

books to the Extension Office by October 1.

Volunteers from the 4-H community will judge the 4-H

record books. Junior members will also have an interview.

Please indicate your preferred interview date on the award

application form.

Intermediate/Senior Members may apply for project

awards. Please complete the proper forms. Award

applications are due to the Extension Office by October 1.

Club Officer Awards: 4-H members holding a club office

are encouraged to apply for a club officer award. Award

applications are due to the Extension Office by October 1.

When will I receive awards and recognition?

Clayton County 4-H Awards Program is held the third

Sunday in November each year at Johnson’s Reception

Hall in Elkader. Pizzazz Night honors both youth and

adults for their accomplishments. A spaghetti dinner

fundraiser kicks off the festivities from 5:30 –7:30 pm. The

awards program begins at 7:00 pm. The evening is open

to the public.

Complete record book in suggested order (see back).

Complete and demonstrate competency in at least one project record; submit current year project record.

Juniors use Basic Project Record

Intermediates use Experienced Project Record

Seniors use Advanced Project Record

To apply for an award please submit current year and prior years. Prior years are not required to be in succession.

Livestock project area records should include 4-H Market/Breeding Animal Worksheets to show feed rations, vet care and cost analysis.

Some non-livestock areas have specific forms. Including: photography, crops, vegetables, and Safety and Education in Shooting Sports.

Record Keeping Tips:

Be neat. Make your writing clear and to the point (type if possible).

Check spelling, grammar, and math.

Be sure to tell what you learned in each project throughout the year.

Please do not include the following items: fair ribbons, feed tags, 4-H newsletter, club programs, fair write-ups or stall cards.

This is a record book, not a scrapbook.

Title Page with Photo – Options to include: your photo, your name, club name, grade last completed in school and years in 4-H.

Participation Guide – visit website above.

4-H Yearly Summary – The summary helps you summarize your participation in 4-H projects, local group involvement and at community, county, regional, and state levels. Pictures and clippings related to club events may be placed here. Examples: club meetings, camps, float, county and state fair non-project activities.

Project Records – Add current project records on top of prior years records. For example: 2009-2010 on top of 2008-2009, etc.

One Project Record form is needed for each project in which you are enrolled.

Goals are required for each project area. See below.

Intermediate and senior members are required to include some type of financial statement on their projects. Financial records are encouraged for Junior members; not required.

Project related photos, clippings, and exhibit information should be placed after project record forms.

What is a Goal?

Goals are what you want to learn in each project and includes three parts. Ask yourself: Do I have control over these 3 parts?

ACTION - how you are going to do it.

RESULT - what you will do.

TIMETABLE - when you plan to have it completed.

Goal Examples

I want to learn how to make chocolate chips cookies to serve at the March 4-H meeting.

I want to train my dog to sit before county fair time.

NOT : I want to win a blue ribbon at fair.

Project Awards Youth completing grades 7-12 may apply for 4-H project awards. You may only win a specific project award once, Part of the evaluation process for Intermediate & Senior Project Awards is an interview or a 2-5 minute video. Application due October 1.

Danforth "I Dare You Award" Presented to youth who have completed 10th or 11th grade and demonstrates leadership qualities, excellence in character, and has potential for future leadership. Applicant must have two or more years of 4-H work, show leadership, citizenship, achievement skills, and an overall excellence in their 4-H career. Application due October 1.

Club Officer Awards These awards are to be applied for by the officer whose work has been done this past year. Officers may be any age. Materials must be submitted by 4-H'er holding respective office. If more than one office is held by 4-H'er, that individual may apply for only one officer award. Club Officers include: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Historian, Photographer, Reporter, Recreation Leader, Healthy Living Officer. You may only win a specific officer award once, Applications due October 1.

4-H Club Community Service Award Groups or clubs may submit a written report along with pictures, newspaper clippings, etc. about their club’s community service project from the 4-H year. Applications due October 1.

Alumni Award is given to an individual that was a past 4-H member and has given their time and talents to the benefit of 4-H members and/or the 4-H program. Nominations due October 1.

Honorary Award is given to an individual that was never a 4-H member, but has given their time and talents to the benefit of 4-H members and/or the 4-H program. Nominations due October 1.

Meritorious Service Award is given to an individual, group, or business that has supported the 4-H members and/or the 4-H program through their time, talents or resources. Nominations due October 1.
