Stimulating Memories Through PhotosBy Ava M. Stinnett

We all need to feel engaged and entertained, to stay active both physically and mentally.Just because someone has Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia doesn’t mean thatneed disappears. But because of the cognitive decline that accompanies dementia, howpeople get engaged often has to change.

An obvious sign of dementia is memory loss. One way to help stimulate the memoriesfor someone with Alzheimer’s—whether in the early or late stages of the disease—is byusing visual aids, specifically photos. But how can families and caregivers use thephotos to create opportunities for those who are affected by dementia to connect withthose around them and themselves?

· Start by choosing a photo album that is sturdy but easy to hold. Keep the designsimple so the photos are easy to focus on. Use plastic protective sheets overeach page so the album will last indefinitely.

· Make the pictures large and clearly labeled.· Place photos in chronological order. Your loved one may enjoy photos that span

key times in their life, such as childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Includeshots of family members (across generations), caregivers, and friends to showrelationships and to spark recognition of people in the photos.

· Be sure to also select photos that show your loved one’s achievements andawards, hobbies, and travel.

· If possible, work with your loved one as you create the book and compile thephotos. Begin with just a few pages. This is a good opportunity to share memoriesand conversation. You may find that the person with dementia has manyinteresting stories to tell.

· Revisit the album from time to time, adding additional photos to reflect the pastand present.

The photo album can be used as a distraction technique for refocusing during difficultsymptoms, as a security tool when the person is taken to unfamiliar places (e.g., thehospital), and to promote well-being and a sense of accomplishment. The album canalso be used as a bridge to the past and a connection to the present.

Exercise is for Everyone

Frailty may be common in the elderly, but it is not inevitable, and studiessuggest it can be delayed by leading active and productive lives. Stayinghealthy longer is possible by following some preventative measures includ-ing regular physical activity.

Live 2 B Healthy strives to alleviate many of thecommon issues surrounding aging by centering ourexercise focus on building balance and strength toimprove overall health while reducing falls and theneed for hospitalization.

Now more than ever seniors need exercise. Seniorsat any age are completely capable of participating inexercise programs like Live 2 B Healthy and studyafter study has proven how beneficial it is for theiroverall wellness.

Many believe that exercise is unsafe for elders, but countless studies have shown thatexercise benefits individuals at every age. It improves their physical capacity byincreasing their strength, balance, flexibility and mobility. Throughout the year, Live2 B Healthy conducts testing that solidifies these studies. Exercise is also known toenhance emotional capacity; it improves mood, decreases anxiety and depression, and improves cognitive function. Seniors who are active in exercise groups arechallenging the stereotypes associated with elder capabilities, and are enhancingtheir lives in the long run. But we think the results speak for themselves…

“Exercise training can protect against a number of chronic diseases of old age. More important, it

maximizes residual function. In some instances, biological age is reduced by as much as 20 years.

Life expectancy is increased, partial and total disability is delayed, and there are major gains in quality

adjusted life expectancy. Exercise is a very important component of healthy living for senior citizens.”

-

After just 3 months of participation in Live 2 B Healthy’s program the

physical results were measured at a community in Minnesota where the average age is 95. The results

showed a 253% improvement in one-leg balance, a 36% increase in upper body strength, a 35% increase

in lower body strength and a 23% cardiovascular improvement.
