Christmas is Coming!

Sorry to remind you all of this whilst you are sitting enjoying the wonderful summer weather. However, I need to plan ahead for our Christmas music.

There may be some of you out there who like to sing and wonder about joining a choir. You may or may not be able to read music but you can learn a lot quite quickly.

If you already are a singer, well and good and you will be very welcome, but we welcome anyone, men or women, who can hold a tune and enjoys learning new Christmas music as well as singing old favourite carols.

We will be practising for Christmas from October 8th and if you would like to join us in our practices in Church on Mondays at 7.30pm until 8.30pm you would be very welcome. We will be practising our normal service music as well and you will be welcome to join in and learn a lot from that too.

Please let me know by email: [email protected] or telephone: 01793 731629I look forward to hearing from you,

Jenni Moseling

Can you help? Don’t be like Little Jack Horner and sit in the corner, hiding your talents away. Put in your thumb and pull out a plum and make crumble and cake on a Friday! We are looking for new bakers at our regular Friday Market. If you feel you have a talent and would like to be part of our friendly group of producers, please come along and have a chat with one of the committee members. Also, The Market will be running a stall at the Old Town Autumn Fayre at Christchurch on 15th September between 12.00 and 16.00. Come along and join us. Wroughton Country Market is held each Friday in the Ellendune Community Centre between 9.00 and 11.00 am. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Air Ambulance Week - Get Your Bake On

If you like cakes then why not host a bake sale or bake off and help Wiltshire Air Ambulance to keep flying and saving lives? Bake Off for Lift Off is our theme for National Air Ambulance Week, 10 – 16 September 2018. We’re asking individuals, community groups, schools, colleges and businesses to get their bake on and fundraise for our lifesaving charity. Organise a bake off with your friends, family or colleagues, hold a bake sale, dress up at a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party or hold a Teddy Bears’ Picnic. We’ve been saving lives for over 28 years thanks to the incredible support and generosity of the public who donate. But we have to raise £3.25 million a year to keep our lifesaving service operational. Join us in our mission to Bake Off for Lift Off and help us save lives. Register your interest by emailing [email protected] or call us on 01225 300536. Let us know what you’re planning to do and we can send you your pack to kick-start your fundraising!

Church clean-up day On Saturday September 29th we’ll be having a serious attempt at cleaning the interior of the church – all the brass, dusting, (windows, insides only!), vacuuming, floors and general housework. Please do come along and lend a hand, even if you can only spare an hour or so. We’ll begin at 9.30 and probably be finished by lunchtime. Coffee, tea and bacon rolls will be provided to keep us all motivated. We all want the church to look its best for Harvest Festival, and with your help I am sure it will be sparkling! Thank you from Sally Cartwright and Gill Crabtree, Churchwardens

Don’t suffer a cold home

Living in a cold home can be bad for your health. Consistently low temperatures in your home may exacerbate existing health issues (particularly respiratory and cardiovascular conditions) and make it harder for you to recover from illnesses. It can cause you and your family to feel miserable at home, affecting concentration, dexterity and mental health.

Wiltshire Council has been working to address these issues and make it easier for people struggling to heat their home to a healthy, comfortable temperature to access free advice and support.

Residents can now contact Warm & Safe Wiltshire - a one stop shop for all cold home and energy queries. The service aims to provide free, impartial advice about keeping your home warm, understanding your heating system and energy bills, switching energy supplier and making energy saving improvements. The service also aims to prevent isolation worry by signing residents up to the Priority Services Register so that in the event of a power cut, they have the support that they need. Energy advice can be given through home visits as well as over the phone. Fire safety alarm and appliance checks can also be organised in partnership with Fire and Rescue for eligible residents.

Warm and Safe Wiltshire will also be working closely with relevant organisations to ensure that the team are able to refer and signpost residents for additional support. This could include ensuring you are receiving all the benefits you are entitled to or support in making essential improvements to your home. Insulation is one of the best ways of lowering your energy bills as well as replacing old, inefficient heating systems. Warm and Safe Wiltshire can let you know if you’re eligible for funding to help towards the cost of making your home warmer and more comfortable.

Please contact the team if you would like any advice or you know anyone who would benefit from a referral.

Warm and Safe Wiltshire is a service provided by Swindon Borough Council and Wiltshire Council in partnership with the Centre for Sustainable Energy and Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service.

Summer opening hours

Monday- Saturday 9am - 5pm, Sundays & Bank Holidays 10am 4pm

Volunteer Appeal Please consider volunteering at your local community shop as we are in need of people to help keep the shop open. It is a great way of meeting people and making friends. We need volunteer shop assistants, but if you don’t want to be in the public eye there are lots of other things you could do to help such as baking, helping with deliveries, collection of supplies and so on. We don’t expect you to volunteer at the same time every week unless you want to. If you can only help occasionally we would also be grateful for this. Any help however small is gratefully received. If you think you would like to volunteer, even for an hour or two, just to help out, just call Lyn, Lynda or Holly at the shop on 01672 539200. We promise tea, biscuits and friendship. Local Deliveries Please don’t forget that we can deliver to you if you are unable to come into the shop. Just give us a ring on the number at the top of this article. AUGUST NEWS

New Committee Members

We’re delighted to tell you, we have one new member of our team, David Allen, welcome

David. However, we still need more people to join us and ensure we can keep BHVH open

for everyone to use and enjoy. We're a friendly bunch and the amount of time you give is up

to you.

To find out more, get in touch with James Gates [email protected] 07789 199831.

Using Donation Reminder on Easy Fund Raising

Your online shopping habits can benefit BHVH! If you already use Easy Fund Raising, make

sure you've downloaded Donation Reminder. Every time you go to a participating retailer’s

site a reminder pops up so you don't miss a free donation. Last financial year we received

over £260, this year, it’s dropped to £120. So Donation Reminder is REALLY important! If

you haven't already signed up, there are instructions elsewhere in the Local News.

Hiring the hall

• For a party or wedding reception, hire the hall and meeting room, all day and evening for only £150.

• We accommodate arts, craft and fitness classes too. The main hall or the meeting room for a couple of hours during the day or evening costs £18.

• For a large meeting or conference, businesses can hire the main hall for three hours during the day for only £54. It holds at least 120 theatre style and 100 at dining tables.

• For smaller numbers, the separate meeting room is a great option. It seats 36 theatre style, 20 boardroom style. Businesses can hire for two hours during the day for £24.

Raise money for the village hall by shopping online

Do you shop at Amazon, John Lewis, Lakeland, Boots and many

more retailers online?

You can help to raise money for BHVH and it doesn’t cost you a

penny, the retailers donate.

54 supporters have raised over £1,960

Here’s how to do it:

1. Sign up – go to easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/broadhintonvillagehall and click on the button to join.

2. Shop – from the easyfundraising website, search for the retailer you’d like to shop with and click through to them. This tells the retailer you came from easyfundraising. The price is exactly the same as if you’d bought directly.

3. Get a donation – after you’ve purchased, the retailer donates to BHVH.

4. Get the easyfundraising Donation Reminder. Miss steps 1 and 2 with this. Just click the reminder when you shop to receive donations automatically. You’ll never forget a free donation again!

5. Careful though, Donation Reminder doesn’t work on Amazon anymore, go through the easyfundraising website first for them to donate to BHVH.

September 2018

View from the Rectory I have been reading voraciously over the summer and I’ve learnt a great deal – including the fact that needle felting while reading is definitely a VERY bad idea. On the lighter end of the spectrum of books was Dave Tomlinson’s ‘Black Sheep and Prodigals’.

In one chapter he says he believes in a God of ‘ hobnobs, beer and round tables’- translated in his experience into biscuits for children at Holy Communion services, Beer at a pub based ‘café’ church, and taking every opportunity to listen and talk about faith at ‘round tables’ where dialogue is real and open, and the possibility of learning as much about God from a self-confessed agnostic as from a Bishop is very much in evidence. And I think he has a point.

There is a perception of church and church people as being …well….churchy. ‘Holier than thou’ stiff, contained and disapproving, (think Richard Stilgoe’s Mrs Beamish) or a joyless goody two shoes always ready to say ‘hush’ especially to children asking loud questions in the silences between prayers. While in some cases this is truly what people encounter and it saddens those who are not this way inclined. Worse again, I know all too well that there are people who feel they are not good enough to cross the threshold of a church when in fact the church is less than it should be without them – believers or not!.

Perhaps it all boils down to the image of God we hold onto - our images will differ somewhat and change and grow (hopefully) but it is still the image that shapes us. The image I hold is of a wandering Christ, ever ready to sit alongside people -whether it’s a woman at a well or in a synagogue, at a wedding or in the desert, open to all because He is Love incarnate. Genuinely interested in us, laughs with us, weeps with us, embraces us, chases us, beckons us, stops to point out a wonderfully coloured butterfly or lies beneath a tree in the warm sunlight. A laughing Christ who loves a cracking joke, a solemn Christ listening to and holding our hearts outpourings. No doubt this image will change again as I know Him more – but that’s where it is now.

I encounter a Christ who delights in chocolate biscuits for the children, and giggles at the adults who would perhaps like one too at the Alter rail but can’t quite bring themselves to ask (oh yes Folks- you have been spotted!) A Christ who watches, deeply moved, former service men and women reverently and respectfully honour the Fallen, and a Christ who rejoices at two doggies bringing rings to a wedding couple, delighting in the inclusion of His creatures at a Holy moment of commitment and joy.

I wonder if we tried to be a bit more like this we’d want to invite our neighbours to join us in our churches and they in turn might like to come. This month we celebrate ‘Back to Church’ month – if you haven’t been in a while why not come along and give us a chance to share with you in the love of God who welcomes all- just as we are? And there might even be a chocolate biscuit!
