Pastor Mary Anne’s Message …

Dear Friends in Christ,

As some of you know the Lutheran Church across the globe will be cele-brating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation this year. Concordia is celebrating, along with the rest of the Church, with special events the last weekend in October. Please reserve Saturday evening, October 28th and Sunday October 29th on your calendars NOW! The influence that the Reformation had upon the Church and Christianity cannot be overstated enough.

Now Martin Luther loved to talk about faith and the Bible. He had a large home that he and his wife Katie would open up to students and visi-tors and friends to gather around the table and talk about issues of faith. He published some of these discussions in a series called “Table Talks”. In honor of Martin Luther’s “Table Talks” we will meet at Nick’s Bistro in Marietta at 6:00 pm on the first and third Wednesdays of the month to eat and talk about issues of faith like forgiveness, belief, war and peace, etc.

I hope you can make it! Feel free to invite a friend. I pray that this casual atmosphere will allow some of you to attend who might not normally come to something like this. If you know you are coming please call me or the church but feel free to come even if you haven’t let me know; we will have a large table reserved in the side room. Our first Table Talk will be held September 6th. In Christ,

Pastor Mary Anne Adult Sunday School: Yes there will be Adult Sunday School this year starting Sep-tember 24th. We will be studying the fascinating character of Simon Peter.

Following a shortened worship, we will embark on various projects. Some

people may stay at the Church to tie quilts, assemble LWR Kits or work on a

project for our shut-ins. Others will do some outside work helping some of

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!

Blessing of the Animals October 1st at 2PM. Please bring all pets for a special blessing! Concordia’s

Annual Blessing of the Animals will be held on Sunday, Oc-

tober 1st at 2pm by the Parking Lot. Bring your friends and

family (fur and feathers are welcome)!

Dear Concordia Friends. as you may know, I have the opportunity to go on mission trips with my cousin, Terry Ortman. Most recently, we have been in Zimbabwe for three weeks. In October, we will be going to Visakhapatnam, India. There we will be working with the ministers of Christ the King of Kings Ministries. This organization operates an orphanage as well as a public school. My cousin year-ly works with these gentlemen and I am excited to be able to join them this year. One of the resources my cousin and I would like to be able to give them this trip is an additional dairy cow or two to make the orphanage more self-sustainable. If you feel you would like to donate to this cause, I would gladly accept a donation of any amount as every dollar counts! Please place your donation in an envelope found in the narthex. The envelope has a cow on it to make it disguisable. You can give it to me or place it in the offering plate. If you would like to write a check instead of giving cash, please make the check out to Macedonia Ministries and I will see that you get a receipt for tax purposes. Below you will find a short synopsis about Christ the King of Kings Ministries. Thank you in advance for your blessings on this endeavor as well as your generosity. Carol McD.

Preface: Martin Luther nailed the Ninety-five Thesis on the door of

Wittenberg Church on All Hallow’s Eve, Oct. 31, 1517 (500 years

ago). The Lutheran Church is one of the largest denominations in

the U.S. as a result of the 95 Thesis.

Summary from Conrad Berendoff’s The Church of the Lutheran

Reformation, a Historical Survey of Lutheranism.

By David Zimmerman, Concordia’s Church Librarian

Martin Luther was born in 11/10/1483 into a lower middle-class family whose

parents wanted him to become a lawyer, a good way to climb to a higher

class. He went to Latin school in Erfurt, began studying law in 1505. One

night after almost being struck by lightening, he vowed to go into the mon-

astery. He lectured on the Bible at the U. of Wittenburg, obtaining a Dr. of

Theology Degree. During the above occupations, the wheels in his head

were turning on how the Catholic Church could be reformed. Luther did

not question a great deal, but would not accept the indulgences – how

the money was spent. Some clergy pocketed money that the people paid

to stay out of purgatory. He nailed the 95 Thesis on the door on the Church

at Wittenburg and was later claimed a heretic and the rest is history.

To learn more about this book and other books of its kind, please ask your

librarian, David Zimmerman. There will be more about this book and others

in next month’s Newsletter.

Social Ministry will continue collecting for personal care kits by collecting

nail clippers and light-weight bath-size towels (20” X 40” to 52” X 27”), dark

color recommended. (Can be found at Walmart.) That should give us

what we need to put kits together for the Ingathering.

Place items in the narthex. (See page 10 for information on School

Kits.)

Anyone wishing to donate communion wine may purchase Manischewitz

CONCORD GRAPE WINE, 1.5 LITERS and place it in the Sacristy. You can

turn in your receipt at the office if you would like to add it to your state-

ment of giving as a donation.
