Dear Friends,

This week I am providing you with a letter from Archbishop Chaput about the Catholic Women’s Conference.

Saint Joseph, Pray for Us!

Monsignor McLoone Monsignor McLoone Monsignor McLoone Monsignor McLoone Pastor Pastor Pastor Pastor

A letter from Archbishop Charles Chaput

This letter is a simple, frank and wholehearted commercial for one of the best gatherings on our archdiocesan calendar this year.

The Philadelphia Catholic Women’s Conference is the brainchild of 30 local Catholic women. They approached me a few years ago with a request to start an annual event that would address those feminine gifts most threatened today in an increasingly fractured and hypersexualized American culture. As a response, the Archdiocese now offers this wonderful gathering to provide women with mutual support in living their Catholic faith, an immersion in the truth of the Church’s teachings on women and, above all, an encounter with Jesus Christ.

The need for an event like this is great, as evidenced by the more than 900 women who attended the inaugural conference in 2013. After a hiatus preparing for and then hosting the World Meeting of Families, planners for the 2016 conference, scheduled in late October, expect the event to sell out at 1,200 women in the coming few weeks.

The Church and the world need women who are animated by a zeal for Jesus Christ. In that spirit, the conference aims to draw women into a deeper understanding of their feminine genius for service and leadership, both at home and in public life. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, October 29, at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, Pa. I’ll celebrate the opening Mass at 8:30 a.m. that day, and the conference will close with a Divine Mercy Prayer Service, ending at 4:15 p.m.

Between these two moments of prayer, excellent presentations from some of the finest American Catholic speakers on women’s and family issues will be offered in English, Spanish and American Sign Language. I especially urge young women in high school and college to attend to the track specifically designed for them called “True Beauty Revealed,” based on the outstanding high school study program by Endow (Educating on the Nature and Dignity of Women).

Speakers for the conference will cover a wide range of topics, all of them valuable and engaging for women in every state of life, married, single or consecrated. The opening keynote address in English will be given by Mary Rice Hasson who recently edited a ground-breaking book on the mission of women in the Church, Promise and Challenge: Catholic Women Reflect on Feminism, Complementarity, and the Church. We’ll also welcome Father Jordan Kelly of the Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Joseph, a nationally recognized retreat master, spiritual director and pastor.

The conference is located at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa for good reason. The Shrine has one of our six Archdiocesan Holy Doors of Mercy and the women who attend will have an opportunity to pass through the Holy Door to obtain the Jubilee Plenary Indulgence under the usual conditions. For this reason, a trip to the women’s conference can also be considered a pilgrimage for the Holy Year of Mercy.

This is one conference that really shouldn’t be missed by women committed to their faith. So I look forward to seeing many of you on October 29, and be assured of my prayers for each of you and for this moment of grace in the life of our local Church.

Update

It is Moving Week!

It was less than a year

ago, on Nov. 11, 2015, that

we broke ground on our new parish office building. We

have been leasing the current Holy Family Center from the

nursing home. When the Archdiocese sold the nursing

home, they used proceeds from the sale to substantially fund

the construction of a new parish office building.

Here is what you need to know about the logistics of this

week:

Office location/hours: A receptionist will work out of the St. John Neumann Room in the church from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning Monday, Sept. 26 until Friday, Sept. 30. Thank you for your patience if your request needs to wait until the following week.

Adoration

Perpetual Adoration will move to the chapel in church at 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 26. Adoration will take place every day that week from 6 a.m. until 9 p.m.

On Sunday, Oct. 2, there will be a small procession after the noon Mass to bring the Blessed Sacrament into and bless the new Adoration Chapel.

Open House

Come see our new office (located behind the rectory and convent) after the 7:30 a.m. Mass until 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 2. You can use the new sidewalk that connects the church to the office and do a walk-through of the building.

Open for Business

The new parish office will be open:

Saturday, Oct. 1 for its normal business hours. The library will be open. Sunday, Oct. 2: Open House and regular business hours will begin after the 7:30 a.m. Mass. Adoration Chapel opens at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3: Move is complete, regular business hours, and chapel, library, and meal freezers are open and available.

Our new address: 332 Manor Avenue

Thank you for your patience and adjustments during this exciting time!

The First Spiritual Exercises Have you ever felt a deep longing for inner peace? Have you looked for calm in financial security, a vacation, or a quiet place? As Saint Ignatius of Loyola sought ways to deepen his relationship with God, he noticed how his desires drew him into powerful experiences of grace. His journal noted his reflections, graces, questions, feelings, favorite Scriptural texts and prayers. This journal became an instruction manual for others who wanted the quiet peace of a close friendship with God. Please join us on Thursday evenings: October 6, 13, 20 & 27 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the St. John Neumann room. There will be an information night on Wednesday, September 28 at 7 p.m. in the Parish Meeting Center. To sign up, contact Pam Seymour at 484-678-1653 or [email protected].

Downingtown Life Chain Make a commitment to join fellow parishioners for the annual LIFE CHAIN on Sunday, October 2 from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. in Downingtown. Bring the whole family for an hour of prayer & silent witness to God's gift of life! Those who attend will line the South side of Route 30 in Downingtown from Brandywine Avenue West towards the train station. Please pick up your signs at the Donohue Funeral Home parking lot or just go to a position along the street & wait for a Marshall to bring you a sign. Each person should be spaced 10 ft. apart from each other. This is an hour of prayerful witness so no talking or responding

to the public. For info, call Dan Bowser at 610-909-0807.

Blessing of the Animals The blessing of your pets will take place on the

front patio of the church on Sunday, October 2, at 2 p.m.

public vigil in front of Planned Parenthood in West

Chester. Information about St. Joseph Parish day will be announced in an upcoming bulletin. Please help to spread the word about this important community outreach. If you would like more information, please contact Pat DiPietro at 610-873-2093 or [email protected].

Prayer of the Jubilee

Year of Mercy

December 8, 2015 to

November 20, 2016

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the

heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees

Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving

gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by

money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking

happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his

betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us

hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you

spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of

God!”

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God

who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy:

let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord

risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would

also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel

compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone

who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven

by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its

anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of

grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed

enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim

liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to

the blind.

We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of

Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy

Spirit for ever and ever.

Amen.

In today’s gospel, Jesus offers a warning about living selfishly in His parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. The Rich Man holds sumptuous feasts and dresses in fine clothes. But despite his affluence, he does nothing to relieve the painful hunger and debilitating condition of his neighbor Lazarus. He neglects to love his neighbor as he loves himself and is sent to hell for his lifestyle and desire for self-gratification. The Rich Man represents those who spend their money on their own personal pleasures with no regard for sharing their material possessions with the poor and needy in their own neighborhood.

Good stewards realize the practical implications of not only loving God, but loving their neighbor as they would love themselves. Who are the less fortunate in our neighborhood? Do we share a portion of our own blessings with them?

The Loaves and Fishes Project

With the Loaves and Fishes Project, giving is as easy as 1-2-3:

• Grab a can of soup, a box of pasta, or any non-

perishable item from your cupboard as you dash out the door to Mass.

• Drop off your donation in the “Loaves and Fishes” closet on your right as you come into church.

• Enter the church with the warm feeling of a nourished soul!

The Loaves and Fishes team will deliver the items to the Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown. Feel free to contribute to this “ongoing food drive” once a week, once a month, or once a year. As a church family, we can make a much appreciated contribution and a significant impact to a charity that helps over 700 families every week.

Please contact Nancy Farrington at [email protected] or 610-620-3619 for more info.

If donating food, please ensure that the items are still within their shelf life.
