The moon moves to cover the sun for an annular solar eclipse behind the "Askari monument" in Dar es Salaam. Stargazers in south and central Africa were treated to a spectacular solar eclipse when the Moon wandered into view to make the Sun appear as a "ring of fire", astronomers say. The phenomenon, known as an annular solar eclipse, happens when there is a near-perfect alignment of the Earth, Moon and Sun.

The image was just as unsettling as it was unforgettable. A toddler's body lay face down on the sandy shores of the Mediterranean Sea. His small frame slumped lifeless in the arms of authorities who whisked him away, his bright red shirt inched up exposing parts of his belly, the Velcro straps undone on his shoes.

Three-year-old Alan Kurdi embodied the human tragedy and desperation of the thousands who came pouring out of war-torn Syria in search of refuge. Now, one year after Kurdi drowned off the shore of the Greek island of Kos, the suffering continues.

NILUFER DEMIR / Dogan News via AFP - Getty ImagesThe United Nations has identified 13.5 million Syrians in desperate need of humanitarian assistance since violence first took hold of their country. Oxfam reported that, since Kurdi's body was found on that beach, 5,700 more people have died as a result of the crisis an increase from a year ago.

"The numbers of people who have died on refugee and migrant routes since the start of 2016 equates to one almost every 80 minutes," Oxfam said in a statement.

Lost in the chaos are the innocent lives and childhoods of an entire generation that has lived through it. With each day comes more images of the young casualties of war, like that of 5-year-old Omran Daqneesh as he sat in the back of an ambulance, his face bloodied and body covered from head to toe in dust and rubble, his shell-shocked expression capturing what many others around the world are thinking: How could this be happening?October 10, 201653

President Barack Obama will visit Laos next week to attend a regional summit, making him the first U.S. president to visit the once-isolated Southeast Asian country.

As part of his trip, Obama will visit the northern city of Luang Prabang. Protected by the United Nations cultural heritage agency UNESCO, Luang Prabang is one of the most alluring places in the region - a city that evokes old-world romance that has gained a reputation as a travellers' Shangri La.

Here are some key facts about Luang Prabang, a former royal capital turned tourist destination.ANCIENT CAPITAL

Luang Prabang, in northern Laos, is encircled by lush mountains and sits at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. It was the capital of the Lao kingdom for more than 200 years until 1565 when power was moved to Vientiane and away from the threat of invaders.LAOS MYTHICAL LUANG PRABANGOctober 10, 201686GALLERY PHOTOS

After the establishment of a French Protectorate in 1893, following a period of turmoil during which Laos was divided into three independent kingdoms, Luang Prabang once again became the country's royal and religious capital.French rule ended in the 1950s and was followed by years of civil war and regional conflict. After the Vietnam War, the North Vietnamese-backed Pathet Lao replaced the monarchy with a communist government in 1975 and the country retreated into isolation. Foreign tourists were not allowed to return until 1989.October 10, 201687GALLERY PHOTOS

RICH HERITAGEDesignated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995, the old town is a fusion of Buddhist architecture and French colonial villas nestled on a peninsula formed by the two rivers. On its website, UNESCO says the "well-preserved townscape illustrates a key stage in the blending of these two distinct cultural traditions".However, the agency noted some threats to the site due to the rapid development of the town and strong economic pressures, many of which are related to tourism.LUANG PRABANG IS SEEN FROM MOUNT PHOUSI.October 10, 201688GALLERY PHOTOS

SLEEPY BACKWATER NO MORE

The countrys tourism sector has seen rapid growth with arrivals up 13 percent to 4.6 million in 2015 from the previous year. Most visitors are from neighbours Thailand, Vietnam and China, but South Korea, Japan, Europe and North America are key markets as well.October 10, 201689GALLERY PHOTOS

Visitors to Luang Prabang can explore by bicycle or by boat along the city's waterways. The main historic area offers a variety of boutique hotels, restaurants and galleries. A night market selling brightly coloured woven shawls, Lao coffee, carved wooden souvenirs and paper lanterns takes over the main road in the evening.October 10, 201690GALLERY PHOTOS

RELIGIOUS FIGURES ARE SEEN INSIDE WAT XIENG THONG BUDDHIST TEMPLE.TRANQUIL TEMPLES

Among the dozens of temples in Luang Prabang, Wat Xieng Thong is the best-known, dating from the 16th century. Highlights include a tiny, ornate red chapel in the courtyard, and intricate wall decorations encrusted with tiny glass mosaic tiles.

The National Museum, housing a selection of religious treasures and antiques, is housed in the former Royal Palace. Among its pieces is the Phra Bang gold Buddha, which gave Luang Prabang its name.October 10, 201692GALLERY PHOTOS

Masqueraders may be committed to a particular club or band, which selects a designer who provides drawings and a concept for the entire display. The king and queen costumes are the most elaborate, while those for the ancillary characters are less complex."
