Elect a Building Representative and School Union Committee

Active and effective building representatives and school union committees organize, engage, empower, inspire and mobilize members on issues important to our schools and students. Building representatives and school union committees support and enhance our union’s work to strengthen the learning and working conditions of our students and educators. The Lynn Teachers Union recognizes that sustained, meaningful member engagement around issues is the foundation of a strong union. Our fight for the schools our students deserve begins at the local level—negotiating changes to the teachers’, paraprofessionals’ and therapists’ contracts with the Lynn School Committee, electing public officials that support our public schools, ensuring the fruition of the Pickering construction project, defeating Ballot Question 2 and the First Book Truck Challenge are among the union’s campaigns this school year. Dear members of the Lynn Teachers Union: Good day and Happy Labor Day! I am proud to serve as the president of the 1700 member Lynn Teachers Union and look forward to working with you in the year ahead. As a community, it is our collective responsibility to give the children the education they need for a brighter future. We have much to celebrate and many challenges and opportunities ahead. Negotiating changes to the teachers’, paraprofessionals’ and therapists’ contracts with the Lynn School Committee, electing public officials that support our public schools, ensuring the fruition of the Pickering construction project, proposed charter school expansion and the First Book Truck Challenge are among the challenges and opportunities this school year. The Teachers’ Negotiating Team of Aili Cervenka – Classical, Cheryl Correnti – Breed, Karen Dulong – Pickering, Brant Duncan – Lynn Teachers Union, Geoffrey King – Cobbet, Steve Lopez – Lynn Vocational Technical Institute, Jennifer Mack – Classical, Paul Mailloux – English, Colleen McElligott-Liporto – Lincoln-Thomson, Richard Newton – English, Sheila O'Neil – Shoemaker, Beth-Ann Pento – Harrington, Jeremy Shenk – AFT Massachusetts, Miriam Rodriquez-Fusco – Speech and Erin Zukowski - Itinerant Math have been meeting regularly this summer and are poised for action. The results from the March 2016 teachers’ survey have been scoured and the teachers’ negotiating team has organized the priorities of the approximately 1200 teachers into contract proposals. These proposals supported with educational research will be presented to the Lynn School Committee in negotiations. Negotiations are scheduled to begin in late September. Additionally, you will be urged by your building representative and other union activists in the coming weeks to participate in the No on 2 and First Book campaigns - if we are “all in”, we can fight forward and win. Please get involved in our union of professionals. Comings and Goings: Congratulations to Jacqueline Gallo on her appointment as the Assistant Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Early Childhood!

We remember: LTU members Rocco DellaCroce, Louis DeNunzio, Ronald Leary, Alice Porter and Rodrick Wilson have recently passed. The LTU extends its sincere condolences to their family and friends. Sincerely,

Brant Duncan
