Enrollment Process
The new 4-H year will begin after the 2nd of September, so please do not start enrolling or re-enrolling until that time.
All Clover Kid and 4-H members will be using 4hOnline to enroll or re-enroll for the 2015-2016 4-H year.
4hOnline web address https://ia.4honline.com (bookmark this page)
If you can’t remember your password, you can reset the password yourself by selecting “I forgot my password” and it will then send the new password to your email account, associated with your 4hOnline account.
If you have logged in before select “I have a Profile”. Enter family email and password.
Click “edit” next to the name (under Member/Volunteer list).
Click “Enroll for 2015-2016” to the 4-H member you are re-enrolling (bottom of page).
Verify or edit personal information. Don’t forget to add your email and cell number.
Update Emergency Contact (someone other than yourself, if you can’t be reached).
Update additional information and health form.
Add the projects that you are interested in and number of years you’ve participated.
When finished, select “Submit Enrollment”.
Follow the same steps if you have more than one child.
Help sheets can be found at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/4honline-information-families-and-leaders
Enrollment discount deadline! Enroll by December 31st for $20 per kid. After December 31st fees are $30 per kid. Remember if your child is participating in the beef weigh-in, get them enrolled before that date so that their information for their beef cattle can be entered into the system.
New Clover Kid and 4-H Families
New families this year will not be using the paper enrollment forms. They will be going on 4hOnline themselves to create their profile and memberships. If they experience problems have them contact the Extension office to help guide them through the process.
A help guide to 4-H is available on the Extension website by going to www.extension.iastate.edu/buchanan/page/join-4-h.
The Extension office will again offer to pay for a pizza party to the club that increases their enrollment with the highest percentage by May 15!
We hope to see the number rise this year in enrollments. Now is a great time to start recruiting new members! If you need any recruitment materials to hand out at the schools and wherever you think would be a great place to recruit members, contact the Extension office .
All FFA members will be using an enrollment form found on the Extension website at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/buchanan/4h —>right hand side. Those must be completed and turned in or postmarked by November 15.

young leaders will bring to the group and to the 4-H program. They will be helping with different events such
as workshops, Awards Night, citizenship projects, Communications Day, the county fair and more! The first
meeting will be held on Sunday, September 27th at Heartland Acres Theater beginning at 3:30 pm. Members
will be brainstorming ideas on what things need to be changed or be added to the program for the new year.
If any of the clubs have ideas during their meetings send it along with one of the YCC members to take to the
meetings. All input or ideas are welcome!
Record Book Reminder—September 15
It is that time of year again to prepare your record books. Deadline is September 15 to the Extension office by
4:30 pm. The record book order and process can be found by going to
http://www.extension.iastate.edu/buchanan/news/record-book-info. There is information broken down
for members.
All members should look at the record book format, awards information form application and record
keeping awards and definition of terms. Remember that if you want to apply for an award you must fill
out the Awards Information form. That is the first step in earning the award.
The second step is that your record book organization and appearance must have received a gold
achievement record book award to be considered for a project area award.
The final step is if the member filled out the award information form, received a gold achievement award
for record book organization & appearance, and earning enough points for a gold project award at the
designated age level, then they will receive that project area award.
Don’t forget to do your historian books this year and check the box on the Award Information Form. In order
to be considered, that must be checked on that form. To see what you will be evaluated on please look on
the website from above and look under “All Members”. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to
call the Extension office for assistance.
Broiler Project Reminder
For those who participated in the broiler project this year, you must contact your sponsors. We hope that
you have been in contact with your sponsors throughout the summer keeping them updated. It is your
responsibility to deliver your processed birds to the sponsors. Those who raised 25 birds must deliver 3 and
those who raised 50 must deliver 6 of their best birds. If your birds did not make it, still contact your sponsors
and work something out. Contact the Extension office ASAP for the sponsors contact information. This is very
important, if this is not done we will lose our sponsors for this project in future years. The 4-H program wants
to keep seeing this project grow because the purpose is to teach members about taking care of poultry and
taking on a role of responsibility.

4-H Awards Night Banquet
The 2015 Awards Night banquet will be held on Saturday, November 7 at St Patrick’s Event Hall in Winthrop
with the meal beginning at 6:30 pm and program at 7:00 pm. The Extension office is looking for a couple
clubs in that area to help host for that evening. What the club(s) would be assisting with would be
decorations, greeting families, showcase their club, make a dessert and help make the night run smoothly.
Clubs in that area, at your club meeting please discuss what you could help with for that evening. We are
open to all ideas.
National 4-H Week
National 4-H Week is October 4-10. During this week it would be neat to see club members help promote 4-H
in their communities. Clubs can do projects together or it can be done individually. Ideas for clubs are:
decorating store front windows with the permission of the store owner, make clover-shaped cookies to
deliver to shut-ins, decorate school bulletin boards or wear your 4-H t-shirt. Make sure to forward your
pictures to Alexia at [email protected]. These pictures would be displayed at Awards Night, our
Facebook page and our Extension webpage.
Independence Farmers Market
Buchanan County Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is represented at the Independence Farmers
Market every week from now until October 17. We are asking for 4-H clubs to volunteer to help man our
booth and promote 4-H! Clubs are asked to sit at the ISU Extension and Outreach booth from 8 am-11 am or
9 am-noon. If you would, call our office to sign up for September 5, 19 and 26. Some clubs in the past have
done a working exhibit or displayed projects that they have done throughout the year to show the
community and to recruit members. The Extension staff would greatly appreciate clubs to help. This is a great
opportunity! Call or email us at 319-334-7161 or [email protected].

State 4-H Council
Attention to all 10th-11th graders who are seeking more leadership opportunities above the county level. The Iowa State 4-H Council is composed of approximately 40 energetic and positive high school juniors and seniors who act as ambassadors for 4-H. One of their major responsibilities is planning the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference held in Ames, Iowa every June.
Members are selected from their extension areas through an application and interview process. The youth meet 4 times during the year at the State 4-H Camping Center. They get to know each other through team building activities, plan conference, promote 4-H, help to ensure funding for 4-H programs, and form friendships that last a lifetime.
The Iowa State 4-H Council members also serve as ambassadors for 4-H, often meeting with county councils
and 4-H groups in their local areas. The State Fair, state 4-H events, and leadership workshops also keep the
council active. Go to this web link for more information http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/statecouncil

Buchanan County 4-H Record Book Order
Record book system would like Clover Kids and 4-H members to start keeping all their records and forms
from previous years in a three ring binder. This will help judges see how youth have progressed throughout
the years and see the growth in the different project areas. Below you will find the order of the record book.
Please use tabs to divide each section in the book (Title Page, Expected Standards, 4-H Yearly Summary,
Project Records by each project category.) May be typed or if records are handwritten, they must be legible.
If not then points will be docked.
1. Project Information Award Form – not required but if a member wants to be considered for a project
area they must complete this form.
2. Title page – includes name, club name, photo (optional and can be decorative i.e. may relate to 4-H
theme), grade in school, years in 4-H. From now on include title pages from previous years but keep
the current year on top.
3. Buchanan County 4-H Expected Standards – keep the current year on top of other Expected Standards.
Must be signed by 4-H’er, Parent/Guardian, and leader.
*Clover Kids DO NOT need to fill this form out.
4. Clover Kids and 4-H Yearly Summary or 4-H Story – keep the current year on top of past summaries.
Also include general 4-H photos and clippings throughout the year i.e. club photos, parade,
community service – place behind summary.
5. Project Record Forms – at least one project area must be filled out to receive points for yearly
summary.
Clover Kids & Jr. Project Record forms – Clover Kids K-3 and Junior 4-H’ers grades 4-6
Intermediate Project Record forms – Intermediate 4-H’ers grades 7-8
Senior Project Record forms – Senior 4-H’ers grades 9-12
Remember to summarize project areas that you don’t complete a record for on page 3 of the Yearly
Summary. When filling out project area record forms, be sure to add other tabs to your binder. For
example if you want to do a project award for photography, make a photography tab and put your
information/forms in that appropriate spot. As a reminder keep the current year on top of past years.
Keep in mind that goals are an important factor in record keeping. Goals for projects should include these
main things: (ART) 1) Action – how are you going to do it, 2) Result – what will you do, 3) Timetable –
when do you plan to complete the project
Example: 1) I want to train 2) my 4-H beef heifer to lead 3) before county fair time.
*Livestock project area records must include animal worksheets and lifetime records to show feed
rations, vet care, and cost analysis.
*Building Exhibits may also include write-ups and goal worksheets
*Support Material of pictures or newspaper clippings should be placed behind the record.
6. Record Books will be due September 15th with all signatures from the 4-H member, parent and leader.
