It's the start of a new school year and this means

as a parent you have an opportunity to en-courage your child to see school as an exciting place to learn. There is a lot of competition that a child faces when he/she goes to school and not every child feels like a competent student. It's important that you have a realistic expectation of what your child is able to do and help him to develop the tools to make school a success.

This month’s column will focus on what you can physically do to set up a positive experience for the school day.

Ask yourself the following questions to assess whether you are assisting your child and providing the best possible structure for his school experience.

Do you have a set structure for getting up in the morning?

Many people are not morning people and this means that you as the parent, have to set a good example and look at setting up the day in a positive way. In most cases you will be the first ex-perience your child will have as he rises for the day. As simple as it sounds, greet your child with a smile and a positive wake up call.

Do you provide some good nutrition to start your child’s day?

Create a structure that supports breakfast and a specific time for each one of your kids to be ready for breakfast.

Help them organize their “go to place” for their stuff.

As chaotic as the morning can be, set up a place for your kids’ backpacks and tablets so they will know where to go as they get ready for the bus. This requires great structure and perhaps even a family meeting to coordinate your expectations so the kids will know what

to expect as they begin their day.

Do you have a specific time for kids to do homework?

Most professionals believe the kids need to come home, have a snack and activity before they do their homework. Since mom and/or dad may not be home until dinner time, it's important for children to do their homework when parents can supervise. This means they do their homework in a place that is visible to you so that you can be assured that they're spending the proper amount of time following through with their school responsibilities. There should always be a link to a fun activity once his/her homework is done. Perhaps that's a snack or cell phone time or playing his Gameboy. This motivates your child to get his work done so that he/she can enjoy the rest of the night.

Stay on schedule.

It is important that your child has a bedtime that you absolutely adhere to. If you allow your child to stay up later than his proposed bedtime, your child will begin to expect that to be the new time. Therefore it’s imperative that you adhere to a strict schedule. You know that you need your down time too.

Always end the night with a kiss or hug and a positive statement about what tomorrow has to bring. You are a catalyst for putting good thoughts into your child's head before they go to sleep.

So let's face it there needs to be about 10 of you to truly implement your child’s daily routine and yet your ability to promote a schedule from the time they wake up to the time they go to bed in-sures that your child will be ready for a great school day!

As the school buses begin to roll, all parents hold high hopes that their children will succeed. Unfortunately, some struggle. When that happens, acting sooner is always a better path.A child who has trouble in school will not be able to resolve these issues on their own. In some situations the parent may believe the child is just not trying. “He knew that word yesterday!”Children are little sponges who want to soak up knowledge. When they realize they are having trouble learning, any number of behaviors may erupt.Problem is – they don’t know how to explain what the problem is. Parents need to be attentive. Don’t overlook frustration, lack of attention, poor spelling, lack of interest in reading, or skipping words when reading. This is

only a partial list.At j&R Tutoring Academy in Fishers, we administer an online diagnostic in either math or reading. This provides a clear picture of your child’s strengths and weakness. The diagnostic is $50.00, but if your child enrolls with us, that amount is applied to the first month. What the diagnostic does not tell us is why or how these weak areas came to be. That’s what we determine while working with your child. Then we set a course to fix it!Parents provide infants with all their needs. During the early elementary years, children need parents to notice and act if they are having learning challenges. All our tutors are former classroom teachers with Masters’ Degrees in Education. We are here to help.

Don’t Gamble, Don’t Wait

Lucas: Our Very Hungry CaterpillarHaving a child with Autism is difficult to put into words. Every situation and challenge is unique. The uncertainty of daily life puts pressure on everyone in the family; describing it and trying to get assistance only left us more confused.

When we were first introduced to ABC, Lucas was in his own world and we couldn’t break through. Frustrations were high and temper tantrums were often; Lots of crying and not a routine to speak of. He didn’t have the tools to communicate with anyone. Our lives revolved around what he could handle and our family didn’t spend a lot of happy quality time together.

On his first day at ABC, everything began to change. The therapists found what motivated him and set goals for his development. His confidence quickly grew. As soon as one skill was mastered, the next came easier and he quickly began building his accomplishments. At one time I wondered if we would have conversations; now I find myself trying to find the words to answer his questions! Most recently, he asked, ‘Mommy, what did you do today?” My response startled him as I gasped and scooped him up into a bear hug! I couldn’t contain my excitement with his unprompted, thoughtful question.

Through his programs at ABC, Lucas learned the foundation of phonics, reading, numbers, writing, and social skills. He loves to read books at home (I couldn’t get him to sit long enough before) and play games or imagine with his sister. Their relationship is flourishing! He refers to his friends and his therapists by name when talking about them and looks forward to seeing them daily. They are able to intertwine life and behavior skills with fun so he will not get overwhelmed. Participating in a classroom-style setting has shown him what will be expected when he begins school. This has given our little guy time to adjust and prepare for kindergarten (Lucas will be transitioning into a mainstream kindergarten classroom unassisted this Fall).

One of his most beloved books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, describes his journey perfectly...Day by day; the caterpillar ate and ate, learned and learned, more and more until he emerged as a beautiful butterfly. Lucas is thriving! He is charming, friendly, loving, inquisitive, caring, honest, and funny; there is no shortage of words to describe him. We are thankful that he is able to share his infectious smile with the world. Lucas is eager to start Kindergarten and has found a love of learning and relationships through ABC. He will, undoubtingly miss his ABC family as much as we will.

With much love and gratitude the Nusekabels

An autism diagnosis indicates communication deficits which lead to socially awkward interactions for those with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Issues in performing the following skills commonly accompany autism; visual perception difficulties which make imitation difficult, lack of appropriate eye contact and the recognition of the personal space of others. There are many prescribed ways of teaching these social skills. An individual’s Applied Behavior Analysis program can include Discrete Trial Training as well as instruction during times in natural settings to reinforce the use of these lessons in a variety of settings. All games require taking turns and following directions, which are vital to academic and social success. Students can gain the repetition necessary to learn new skills by playing common childhood games. In fact, a lesson that is learned along with movement is more likely to be retained by the learner. Young children, both with autism or

other developmental disorders, as well as neurotypically developing students, learn during activities that first appear to only be fun and games. The game of Simon Says, for instance, requires looking and facing toward the leader, the use of imitation, keeping appropriate personal space and eye contact with the leader. These abilities can be taught in both structured and less structured ways. Go Fish, the simple card game, is a great way to enhance visual and auditory perception abilities, to keep appropriate personal space, use eye contact and taking turns. These tasks are difficult for most students with autism, so it is important to keep the activity itself easy. Players also alternate asking questions and supplying answers, needing to share if someone asks for a card you have, making friends and learning how to win and lose gracefully. Playing is more than just fun and games, which, with DTT, makes for a complete program.

Establishing CaringSmiles 4u as your child’s “Dental Home,” provides us the opportunity to implement preventive dental health habits that keep a child free from dental/oral disease. Along with establishing a good oral hygiene routine, Dr. Taylor also understands the

importance of a healthy smile in developing self-esteem. This is especially true in childhood and teenage years when children begin socialization and interacting with other children. “Your smile is one of the first things that is seen when you meet someone, and it is important to maintain a healthy and beautiful smile,” notes Dr. Taylor. At CaringSmiles 4u, Dr. Taylor and her well-equipped staff see children as young as one year old. Establishing a rapport with the parent and child is important to Dr. Taylor and is the key to successful treatment. Our patients are our most important asset and we strive to develop long-lasting, trusting relationships. We welcome new patients and look forward to seeing you at CaringSmiles 4u.

Traditionally, therapy for children has been “therapist led”- sitting at a table in a contained seat or on the floor with legs crossed facing the therapist. however, I would like to challenge you to try something different. “Coaching” is a method where the therapist shows YOU what to do, and then helps you lead the session while they “coach” you through the process directly with your child. In our experience, this method of therapy has not only helped a child gain skills more quickly (and keep them), but it has given parents and caregivers the confidence needed to feel successful in helping your whole family grow!It can be scary to think about leading the charge when you feel less than confident. But you know far more than you might realize. You are the person who knows your child best; you are the expert. You know what works to gain and keep your child’s attention, what skills they should learn next, and how the targets you are working on as a team will benefit your family as a whole. One hour of therapy a week with your therapist cannot possibly help your child enough. You need to be doing the strategies all day long throughout the week to really make a difference. One easy first step is simply positioning - put yourself between the therapist and your child at every opportunity. That way, all toys, words and actions have to go through you to your child!

Most professionals will agree that early intervention for children with any type of developmental delay is critical. It can make a difference in the success a child is able to achieve. Often the child is able to develop the skills necessary to participate in general education, rather than needing special education services.

One of my previous jobs was as a coordinator for the early childhood special education programs for a group of seven school systems. In that role, I have witnessed the power of early intervention on children with disabilities.

One young boy had received therapies through First Steps (Part C of IDEA) which provides special services to children from birth through age three. Upon reaching his third birthday, the early childhood program in the local public school took over the services.

As he was referred to the public school for services, testing was done to determine what types of therapies/programs would be most beneficial. The testing results indicated that this boy had a mild intellectual delay (low IQ). This information indicated that he would benefit from the early childhood special education classroom along with speech and occupational therapies.

At first he attended the preschool program part time (two to three days a week) then moved on to a full time placement. Because he had a fall birthday, he was able to attend the preschool special education program for almost three full years. At the end of the preschool program, he was re-tested. The results of this testing indicated that he no longer had an intellectual delay and both his speech/language and fine motor skills were within the average range. he would not need any special services as he entered kindergarten.

Was this a miracle? had the school used magic to eliminate his disabilities? No, they

simply provided him with a structured, language rich environment in which he could learn. The ability to learn was always there, but due to environment that he was born into, it was unlikely that he would get the stimulation that he needed to progress.

At preschool he was read to every day. he learned to use scissors, how to hold a crayon/pencil, how to share and take turns. he learned to use a broader vocabulary to express his wants and needs. he was taught how to correct his speech errors so that others could understand him. he learned to follow directions. he learned to play cooperatively with other children, how to work together to achieve a goal. he learned how to follow the rules and behave appropriately in a school and classroom. he learned that school was a good place to be and learning was fun.

he started kindergarten with all the skills that teachers want children to have. he was ready to learn.

While not everyone can afford to provide a preschool program for their child, everyone can take time to read, to color, and to snip with scissors. Take time to go to the park to play with other children, go to the library for story time. Turn off the television and encourage your child to use their imaginations. Provide toys that allow them to pretend. Encourage your child to work and play with others. Take the time to talk with your child using adult language and listen to what they have to say. These activities can help any child develop the skills needed to begin school.
