President’s Message

Hi ho, Artyfolks, Well, I can't believe it's almost here again, but it is! By the time you get your next Artyfacts in the mail, it could even be all over for us!!! And by that, I don't mean the Zombie Apocalypse. I'm speaking of course, of Art in the Park- that wonderful first weekend in October when we all get a chance to prove our devotion to the HAA by volun-teering a little bit of our time, (some might say, "by doing our time"), at the Park, for a couple of hours at least. Up until now, most of the work of getting it all together has fallen to the Art in the Park Commit-tee, a fairly small group of the "usual suspects". But with that mag-ic weekend fast approching, we are, as always, looking for more wide-spread participation from HAA members. Most of the jobs aren't rocket science. In fact, none of them actually are that. Mainly it's just all about being of service to the patrons and the vendors- helping the vendors get themselves set up in their assigned spaces with as little confusion as possible, and later, helping the buyers locate their favor-ite vendors, or perhaps a particular kind of item, be it yummy gourmet pasta, a special kind of ceramic pot, or even that other kind of pot. Those are very popular, and everybody wants to know where they are. The porta ones I mean, not the herbal kind, (which we don't car-ry). But well before we get to that, there's the Friday morning setup of the Members' tent and the Info Booth. That starts early, around 7:30 am, and mostly involves filling sandbags and moving stuff to wherever it needs to go. Then, as the vendors start arriving we will be need-ing some people in the Info Booth to greet them, give them their "welcome" packets, and answer any questions or concerns they may have. We'll also need people for parking lot duty, which involves making sure that everybody parks where they are supposed to, and does not block access for other vendors arriving later. All day Saturday and Sunday we also need to have people stationed in the food vendor parking area, to make sure that the vendor spaces remain reserved for them, should they need to make a quick trip to the grocery store. On Saturday morning, we will also need some people to go around and deliver welcome packets and greet any late arriving vendors, those who might have gotten into town after the Info Booth was closed on Friday. All the welcome packets will include surveys that the vendors may fill out, giving them a chance to comment on their Art in the Park week-end, and make suggestions for the future. On Sunday, we like to send some people around to collect the surveys, maybe chat up the ven-dors if they have time, and see how it went for them.

continued from page 3 Then, starting at 4pm, the take down begins, which is just the setup in reverse, but a lot quicker. If you'd like some sand to take home, here's your chance. Bring a bucket or two. All in all, if enough people pitch in, everything will go smoothly, nobody will get burnt out or exhausted. We will have profited enough from our efforts to pay the bills for a while, with no bake sales necessary. With almost 44 years of AitP under our belt, we have the basics down pretty well, but every year presents new challenges. We do our best to keep our vendors and our patrons happy, and we do depend on all of our members for a little bit of help. I hope, if you're still with me, and have managed to read through all of this, you have also given some thought as to what you could do to help. We need volunteers. Call or e-mail me, Edie, or Lois. Our contact information is on page two of this Artyfacts. Even if you aren't able to volun-teer, we hope that you will plan to come any buy some stuff anyway. That's another way to make the ven-dors happy. Also, while still on the subject of Art in the Park, congratulations to Rod Stevens, the winner of this year's insert cover/poster contest. Rod, I'm sure, is familiar to a lot of you. He's the guy with the kilt and the amazing photorealistic, but still kind of whimsical, paintings that feature everything from soap bub-bles and submerging fruits, to Ball jars, shiny machines and drizzlescapes. In this case, it's an old timey typewriter, spelling out "Art in the Park". And Rod himself has been, for many years, an Art in the Park vendor, so we are especially happy for his contribution. And, as for the new building, not much new to report at this time, but we should be getting all the architect's drawings very soon, and that's really when all the fun begins. Then bids from contractors and all the thrills and chills that will go along with that. Will keep you posted. Happy September, Liz Horning, President
