SECRETARY MANAGER’S REPORT

Hi Members,

The Club’s trading has been consistently strong over the past few months and August has fol-

lowed the trend, thanks to some big crowds at the INXS Tribute Show and the Amateur Boxing

event. We’ll be looking to host these events again in the future as they have proven to be very

popular among our members and guests. The Radiators, another popular band, will be playing

here on Saturday the 6th September. Tickets are only $10 for Members and are still on sale at

Reception, call 9580 3749 to reserve your spot.

The Board of Directors and I attended the Clubs NSW Mandatory Directors Training, which

was run over two days in Hurstville. This training is required under NSW law, which covers our

roles and responsibilities as well as financial governance duties. We all found the sessions

highly informative, assisting us in ensuring we continue to serve and act in the best interests

of the Club.

Regards,

Chris Hendley

PANTHERS JUNIOR AFL CLUB

SUB CLUB NEWS...

Penshurst players in three Grand Finals!

After 16 rounds the regular season has come to a close and we are into finals footy. It was a great season for all age groups and we were proud to have U11s, U12s, 13s, 14s, 15s all making the finals this year. After some tough matches in conditions including torrential rain we have seen success with 3 teams in the Grand Finals at Olds Park on 30 August! The under 11s, 14s and 15s will all be battling it out in the green and white for a shot at the title. By the time you read this report we will hopefully be holding some premiership shields high!

There have been some great improvements across the board from all teams this year with the widening of the Competition to Sydney Harbour White meaning better com-petition and greater opportunity for all our players.

Auskick Presentation Day

With the final rounds played it was time for the Auskickers to celebrate with a sausage sizzle and presentation day at Olds Park on 10 August. With 60 boys and girls in the program this year it was a busy time. The smiles on the faces said it all. We con-gratulated Matt Williams our 2014 Auskick Coordina-tor who also took out the Sydney Coordinator of the year!

RSL President Trevor James (pictured here presenting the Auskick participation awards) was on hand for the

presentation and see a few of the senior games that followed. The support of the RSL and other minor sponsors over many years is recognised and appreciated by the players and families.

The older players will have their presentation day on 11th October at the RSL.

SUB CLUB NEWS...

PENSHURST RSL TRAVEL CLUB

Penshurst RSL Rugby League Club continues to build on their against-all-odds grand final vic-tory last season, with a promising opening half of the season that has them sitting in second place on the competition ladder.

The side’s coach, Ken Harris, said that last season’s success had not only helped guild the con-fidence of his players, but had also attracted a large number of new recruits for this season, allowing Penshurst RSL to field a senior reserve grade side for the first time in their history.

Penshurst RSL has one of the smallest forward packs in the competition, and Harris said that his players are having to work extra hard on their fitness in order to negate their lack of size.

“Our attack is definitely what needs improving; our timing and our structures are found lack-ing at times, but we’ll keep working on that and I’m sure it will come good in time for the semi-finals.”

PENSHURST RSL JUNIOR RUGBY

LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB

Twice a year, our organiser, Elizabeth, runs a Mystery Trip. These are reasonably-priced day tours and tend to be held in April and August.

On 10 April this year, we drove to St Peters and pulled up outside a warehouse which was to be our morning tea stop. It was with trepidation that we entered the building, but we needn’t have been so concerned. Wow, what a spectacle! It was a huge barn of a place called ‘Fairground Follies’ and full of illuminated antique fairground items such as two full-sized car-ousels, street and fair organs, nickelodeons etc., most of which were in working order. We

did indeed have morning tea here before the director, Craig Robson, treated us to a tour which included playing music – from pop to religious - on several of the ornate organs plus a ride on one of the carousels built around 1900. The organ shown here is the Taj Mahal, built by the company Mortier in Antwerp, Bel-gium in the early 1920’s. The impressive fa-çade is approx 8.5 m long by 8 m high and was carved in Italy over a two-year period. We spent some hours here before leaving for the mystery lunch location! An hour later, we

were at Black Muscat Park, Chipping Norton Lakes for a very enjoyable barbeque lunch.

Just a couple of weeks ago, on 14 August, the Mystery Trip this time took us to the Children’s Medical Re-search Institute at Westmead. Established in 1958, the institute currently focuses on four main areas of re-search – Development, Cancer, Neuroscience and Gene Therapy and, as several of their research staff are in-volved in the day, only one tour per month can be or-ganised. There were four main speakers who painstak-ingly explained chromosomes, cells, DNA (DeoxyriboNucleicAcid), genes and associated diseases, and were happy to answer any questions. A very inter-esting tour of the research laboratories was involved and morning tea and lunch were provided. On the first Friday of every August, their famous Jeans for Genes campaign is run and, over the past 21 years, $62 million has been raised. After leaving here, we took the short drive to beautiful Lake Parramatta for a very relaxed af-ternoon tea.

If you are a member of Penshurst RSL Club and you’d like to join our travel club, do come along to our next monthly meeting on Wednesday 3 September from 6.45 pm or call our or-ganiser, Elizabeth, on 9533 5809. The joining fee is $6 a year and we run a day or extended tour at least once per month.
