Bringing New Life To Old Allotment SiteThe Lindengate Team wanted to say a massive THANK YOU to all our volunteers and supporters who have helped to get Lindengate to where it is now. Many of you will have noticed the huge change in the old allotment site at Worlds End and maybe seen the odd shed travelling across the field at some considerable height, not to mention the happy bands of volunteers diligently clearing away all the rubbish. Although we’ve done really well with the site clearing, there are numerous things we still need help with…

Plants & SeedsCalling all gardeners. Many of you have already volunteered offering gardening skills and experience and until we reach that aspect of the site development there is much that can be done off site. We’ll need a huge amount of plants for the Lindengate gardens, so if you’re able to provide any plants or seeds from your own garden that would be a great help. Potting up self-seeded seedlings and split perennials, taking cuttings and saving seeds, will all be greatly appreciated. And don’t forget to label them! We will not be able to look after plants for a few weeks yet so we would be grateful if you could nurture them until we get our polytunnels.

Old Horticultural EquipmentDo you have any old gardening equipment that you don’t use? Many of us have things in our sheds which we don’t use anymore! We would be more than happy to take your old tools, even if they need a bit of TLC! Please deliver them to us on site during one of the volunteer sessions or contact Charlie.Other SuppliesWe’ll also need other stuff to get the facility up & running, including timber, lots of paint, general horticultural supplies, general tools and DIY supplies and we are refurbishing our portakabin which will include installing a fully working kitchen! So please remember Lindengate if you are having a clear out or upgrading your homes and gardens. Also, do you have any trade contacts where we may be able to get anything free-of-charge or heavily discounted? Do you have any time to negotiate with suppliers? Anything you can do to help would be valued.

Volunteers still neededWe’re always looking for volunteers, so if

you think you’re able to help us in any way, please let us know. We need help with fundraising, public relations, marketing, organising events, as well as anyone with gardening or DIY skills. The volunteer roles are all on our website, so please take a look. We’ve also arranged some general volunteer sessions at the old allotment site. Please come along to meet us all.

DonationsAnd a bit of hard cash wouldn’t go amiss! If you’d like to donate then please go to our Just Giving page. Thank you for supporting Lindengate!

There are numerous ways you can contact Lindengate. For any general enquiries telephone: 0208 144 4291 or email: [email protected] . Volunteer Application forms are available for download from the Lindengate website. For any further questions on volunteering or to send in volunteer application form, please use the email address: [email protected] . For Plants/Seeds and horticultural supplies, please contact Charlie Powell, [email protected] .

Sizzling Summer Success for Lindengate at The ShoulderOnce again the Shoulder of Mutton teamed up with a local charity to hold its annual ’Party in the Garden’ and with a bit of help from the glorious summer weather a good time was had by all. Lindengate, incredibly, raised just over £2000 on the night!. We would like to thank in particular, the hard working team at The Shoulder of Mutton, the fantastic evening entertainment supplied by new local band Counting Colours, the happy children all around us because of Giggletime and the yummy hog roast from Kings Farm Shop. Thanks also to all the people behind the scenes who worked so hard to make the event one of the best that The Shoulder has ever held and to all you good people of Wendover and the surrounding area who came along and dug into your pockets to support us.

Wendover Petitioning ProcessNow that the Hybrid Bill select committee has started the petitioning process we need to think how we can gather the evidence we need to make our points for mitigating the worst effects have the most impact. As the select committee are starting to take evidence from the north (ie Birmingham) and moving south it is not likely that anyone in Wendover will be called before the New Year and it could well be later, after the General Election. In order to help the petitioners of Wendover the main groups (Wendover Parish Council, Halton Parish Council, The Wendover Society and Wendover HS2) has joined together to form a new group - POP (Petitioning Organisation Partners).

The objectives of this group are to :- Obtain the best mitigation possible for Wendover- Share resources and gather evidence to help all those petitioning- Raise funds to pay for ‘experts’ to make

our case in front of the select committee as strong as possible.

In order to do that the group are looking at collecting evidence and where necessary get expert advice in the following areas:- Noise- Property blight- Traffic Flows- Strain on local resources- Visual blight- Business impacts – trade and agriculture- Construction code of conduct- Impact on local facilities eg cricket ground, St Mary’s- Hydrology- Cultural heritage- Environmental and Ecology

Clearly understanding the issues, gathering the local impacts for Wendover and being able to communicate this to all the petitioners is important. It is a lot of work. However given that the select committee

are working from the north to the south, the earliest date to be heard is January next year. In fact there has been a suggestion that they will not address the Chilterns until after next year’s general election.

We have a little time and if you have any expertise or knowledge in these areas that would help and would like to contribute your knowledge and enthusiasm then please contact us :Bob Duggan - [email protected] Beard - [email protected] Haywood - [email protected] Thompson - [email protected]

The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) – about 120,000 men – was mobilised on 5 August 1914 and by 16 August the first contingent was in France. The BEF was positioned in the area of Maubeuge in Belgium and on 23 August found itself face to face with the German First Army near a small mining village called Mons. Heavily outnumbered, the BEF together with sections of the French Army, retreated and it was not until 6 September that the Allies stood firm on the River Marne and halted the German advance.

It was during the Retreat from Mons that Wendover suffered its first casualty of the war. Private George Caudrey (2nd Ox and Bucks Light Infantry), of Clay Lane, was hit by fragments from an exploding shell. George was sent home for a period of convalescence and gave this account of his experience to the Bucks Advertiser and Aylesbury News: “We were up early and marched about 15 miles and on the route passed through a town that was in flames. Rain was coming

down in torrents now and we went straight into action in open country. A fierce struggle ensued, the German shrapnel falling to the rear of us every time. However, one shell was either wrongly timed or the weather caused it to fall short for it dropped right in front of me. I received four bullets just above the ankle and it also took the sole of my boot right off and smashed my rifle to atoms. I fell down like a bullock slaughtered.” Fortunately, George Caudrey recovered from his wounds and before long returned to France. He survived the war.

During the early weeks of the war there was no shortage of recruits. The two recruiting agents in Wendover were Sergeant Hines at the Laundry on Aylesbury Road and Corporal Thomas Carter in the High Street. Thomas Carter had fought in the Boer War and in civilian life was a blacksmith and, later, owned a garage on the site of the present Budgen’s store. He lost two sons, Thomas and Gordon, in the 1914-18 war.

Chiltern Brewery’s New AleThe Chiltern Brewery take particular pride in their special limited edition beers and Flanders Pale Ale released Tuesday 29 July

has been a true labour of love and inspiration. The ale was launched by Roger Protz, award winning beer writer and editor of CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide, at the brewery in Terrick.

Roger first suggested the brewing of a Flanders Ale to mark the centenary of the start of the World War One and the close brewing links between Belgium and Britain. Following the success of their collaboration on Ruby Ale to celebrate 40 years of CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide, Head Brewer Tom Jenkinson and Roger devised a recipe for a beer that uses pale and Vienna malts, along with a Belgian version of the English Challenger hop from Poperinge, close to Ypres in Flanders. The use of Belgian hops is a first for the brewery.

Grieftime by Heather BulpettLocal residents may well remember Heather Bulpett who grew up in Wendover, attended the Church of England Primary School in Wendover, before going to Aylesbury High School then studying English and Drama at Bangor University. She worked at Rothmans in Aylesbury before changing career to become a tutor in adult education at Aylesbury College and was finally a much valued member of NYAS, supporting children, young people and vulnerable adults. During this time she lived in Weston Turvillle and Aston Clinton. When she decided to become a writer she was fully supported by her family and friends, many of whom still live locally, so it is with sadness that they report the posthumous publication of her first novel, Grieftime, on Tuesday 2 September, her birthday.

Grieftime by Heather Bulpett is published by Book Guild Publishing, www.bookguild.co.uk, on 2 September 2014; Price: £17.99; Hardback; 454 pages. E-book is available.

Sandy’s Trek to EdenWeston Turville resident Sandy Atfield has come up with a unique way of celebrating her 60th birthday and 40th wedding anniversary – to walk 300 miles for The Lymphoma Association. Sandy’s ‘Trek to Eden’ will start from St Nicholas Parish Church in Sutton, her family church and where she and Richard were married 40 years ago this year. Sandy and Richard asked friends and family to make a donation to the Lymphoma Association instead of any presents for the birthday and anniversary, and with those and other gifts so far the original target of £1,000 has already been exceeded.

Sandy said, “The idea of this ‘Trek to Eden’ came to me about ten years ago, soon after my brother Malcolm lost his fight with Lymphoma. He was a keen gardener and helped many church and other friends in Sutton care for their gardens. Malcolm always wanted to visit the Eden Project but sadly he became too ill to make that journey.”

Patients’ CharterThe Westongrove Patients’ Charter formally enshrines your rights, as our patient, to a high standard of medical care and to be treated with courtesy, dignity and respect, whatever your age, gender, sexuality, ethnicity or religion. We will always thoroughly investigate any complaints where patients report

that they have not been treated as they would expect.

Likewise it is expected that our patients treat all the staff and their fellow patients of the health centre with courtesy, dignity and respect. In particular, we will not tolerate abusive or threatening behaviour, or comments or actions that are disrespectful of the ethnicity, religion, gender, age or sexuality of any staff member. We may formally warn any patient who is abusive or intolerant about their behaviour, or in serious cases we may remove the patient from our list.

Improving Continuity of CareWe know that one of the things people value most is having a continuing relationship with their own GP, but that in practice it may be difficult to get an appointment with that doctor. To improve access we are now reserving a number of appointment slots in every doctor’s surgeries for patients who are registered with that doctor. In order to take up one of the reserved appointments, you must be on that doctor’s patient list. If you are

registered with another doctor to the one you think of as your usual GP, please ask at Reception or write to or email Enfys Lewis ([email protected]), requesting your usual GP to be changed.

Building WorksBuilding work in the Health Centre continues. The new dispensary is now open with the hatch close to the main entrance. The former dispensary is being converted into two new consulting rooms. All work is expected to be completed by the end of September. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but we are confident that in the long run the work will improve the facilities available to our patients.

Changes To Our Usual Opening HoursWe will close at 1pm on Wednesday 17 September for staff training; please call 01296 850011 between 1pm and 6.30pm for any urgent matters. At all other times when we are closed please call 111. For full details of our opening hours and a wealth of other information about the services we offer, please visit our website www.westongrove.com .

NEWS FROM WENDOVER HEALTH CENTRE

The trek also coincides with Lymphoma Week from 15-21 September and Sandy hopes to raise awareness along the way.

Change Lives - Become A Volunteer Befriender!Did you know that around 1 million older and vulnerable people in the UK regularly go an entire month without speaking to anyone?

Not everyone has a family or friend support network that they can rely on for guidance and advice to help them through difficult times. Volunteers can help fill this gap by offering their free time and providing support to many vulnerable people.

In recognition of this, Community Impact Bucks’ Volunteer Hub is running a major campaign in September to recruit

volunteer befrienders for organisations in Buckinghamshire, a service that is desperately required for many people in need. Results of a local survey illustrates that over 200 befrienders are needed in Bucks to enable charities to cater for the unmet demand.

Helen Cavill, Volunteer Hub Co-ordinator, said: “Volunteering is a highly rewarding activity with far reaching benefits for the volunteer. For the unemployed, taking on a volunteer role is a perfect way of boosting a CV. For an isolated person, receiving a volunteer befriender can be their salvation. This vital service provides a link to the outside world and often acts as a gateway for other services and valuable support.”

Leaflets giving more information about volunteer roles can also be found at libraries throughout the county, or in the foyer of Bucks County Council’s main office in Walton Street, Aylesbury. By giving a few hours

during school hours, after work, or in spare time, someone’s life can be transformed. If you would like more information about volunteering in your area or matched to a role to suit your interests, call the Volunteer Hub on 0300 1111 250 or email [email protected] .

South Central Ambulance Service As a newly elected Public Governor of the South Central Ambulance Service Trust (SCAS) – the NHS Ambulance service provider for the four counties of Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Hampshire, and as a First Responder for SCAS in your local area, I would like to open communications with you as fellow local patients and villagers, potential “999” patients, and also as the “owners” of the service.

SCAS provide Accident and Emergency service on the “999” system to around 4 million people in an area of approximately 3,500 square miles , 24 hours a day, 7 days

Local News

a week. For the most life threatening calls, we have to meet Government targets of attendance in your home or place of work within 8 minutes. We also operate the NHS “111” service providing non-emergency service as an integrated platform alongside “999”. SCAS not only meet Government performance targets, but also receive approximately four times more compliments than complaints, and we currently have a 97% patient satisfaction rate. For a large part of the public’s time, we are an “invisible“ service – that is, you only meet us when there is an emergency, but that doesn’t mean you should not think about how you may help our service.

How can YOU help us to continue to perform at this level of achievement?

• By trying seeking appropriate routine treatment before things reach a crisis point • Remembering that it is an “Accident” or “Emergency” service, and not a substitute for

seeking a routine appointment or telephone consultation with a GP • If you do need to call “999”, remember that the call taker in many instances stays on the line, but this does not delay the response as there are several people listening and acting simultaneously – it does not delay response • If you are waiting for an Ambulance, if you have a person available or a neighbour, then position that person in order to attract the vehicle – even though our systems are very accurate, some house numbers or names can be quite well hidden • At night, put on a lot of lights, and move vehicles out of the way to allow easy access • If you are a driver, use your mirror, and MOVE over when you see or hear blue lights and sirens. Equally, if you see our Swallowfield BMW Responder vehicle in your mirror with daytime headlamps on, please also give way, or move over, as we may also be on a 999 call to a life threatening emergency, but we are not permitted use of blue lights and sirens!

Group Captain Harper Hands Over Command Of RAF HaltonIn his departing message to Station personnel, Officer Commanding RAF Halton, Group Captain Simon Harper praised his staff, calling them ‘exceptionally talented, enthusiastic and committed individuals.’ Group Captain Harper and his wife, Carolyn and sons are leaving RAF Halton for him to take up a post in London at the Royal College of Defence Studies.

Group Captain Harper said: “As I handover command of RAF Halton to Group Captain Adrian Burns, I do so with a genuine sense of sadness and a huge sense of pride. Sadness at the prospect of leaving such a remarkable RAF Station that unquestionably has a reputation across the RAF and Defence for delivering world-class training. And pride at the opportunity I have had to work with such exceptionally talented, enthusiastic and committed individuals. It is clear to me that you are the critical element that makes RAF Halton special.

It has been a great privilege to be your Station Commander and a great honour to command RAF Halton. You have welcomed me and Carolyn with open arms and provided me with exceptional support over the last 21 months. Simply put, you have made my role as Station Commander very easy and for that I will always be grateful.

New Station Commander, Group Captain Adrian Burns, takes over command this week.

Thank You Rotary Club:Wendover Youth Centre would, once again, like to extend our great thanks to Wendover Rotary Club who donated some money to resurface our pool table. It was getting really grotty and is used by hundreds of young people over the year so it’s great to have it in top working order again. Thank you very much again for your support Wendover Rotary Club.

Inspirational Former Pupils John Colet staff and students were delighted to welcome back some familiar faces at the end of the summer term. Three former students returned to speak to different year groups about their time at the John Colet, and their successful careers since leaving.

Ryan Weston, Clare Hobson and Tom Pink spoke to current student and they were incredibly inspirational. Each speaker has followed very different career paths, however all share determination, self-belief and an ethic of always doing your very best in order to achieve your goals; qualities which current pupils are encouraged to develop.

Ryan, explained the importance of perseverance during his speech. He recounted how he missed out on a place at Manchester University’s Aerospace Engineering Degree by falling 2 marks short in his A Level results. Despite this disappointment, Ryan was determined to achieve his goal and enrolled on the one

year foundation course in order to access his dream course. He came top in the foundation course and went on to get a first in his degree.

Tom attended Coventry University and recounted his fond memories of his time at John Colet. He talked of the high level of support, and encouragement he received whilst at the school.

Clare now owns and runs a highly successful hairdressing and beauty salon in Princes Risborough, employing around twenty staff. She is very nervous of public speaking, so it was a challenge for her to address a packed school hall, however this was part of her message that students should always push themselves and be willing to step outside their comfort zone.

Head Teacher Mrs McLintock said: “It was a pleasure to welcome back these former students. Ryan, Clare and Tom have been

incredibly successful in their chosen fields, and the qualities they display are those we encourage students to aspire to. These former students are living proof that by challenging yourself, and working hard, you can enjoy an incredibly successful and satisfying career.”

Ryan says, “It was a real pleasure to be invited back to speak and present awards at the year 8 celebration morning. John Colet was a big part of my life and I was very lucky to have talented and supportive teachers at the time.

“The key message from my speech was to follow your dreams. There will be set backs along the way but if you believe in yourself then you can accomplish almost everything. Thanks to this ethos I am living my dream.”

A Level Success John Colet students were celebrating today as they received this year’s A Level results, which were some of the best in recent years.

This academic year saw a change to the examination system, as modules were abolished in favour of all exams being taken during the summer period. John Colet students appear to have thrived in the new system as students achieved a 93% pass rate in A2 Level exams. AS Level exam students secured a 92% pass rate.

The top performing students at A2 level included Ryan Brooks, James Davis and Lauren Skinner. The AS level highest achievers included Orie Amadi and TJ Higgs.

Head Teacher, Christine McLintock, congratulated the students. She said: “I am delighted with the results this year. John Colet students are encouraged to have high expectations of themselves and these results demonstrate that through hard work and commitment fantastic grades can be achieved. Pupil progress is our priority and these results support this. I am incredibly proud of both the students and staff.”

CricketA difficult season for Wendover’s 1st XI improved a bit in late July/ August with back-to-back victories in the Mid Bucks League Premier Division. The 2nd XI have recently enjoyed wins over Frieth by 4 wickets and Bradenham by 21 runs in a match reduced by rain to 20 overs. A very youthful team lost to Lacey Green.

The main highlight on Sundays was team victory over Jordans Taverners.

The Club’s President’s Day is being held on Saturday 6 September. This will be a club 6-a-side event held at the Ellesborough Road ground with games starting at about 10.30 a.m. and the final scheduled for 5.00 p.m. The season continues with matches until 21 September. All enquiries to Jonathan Seabrook on 01296 623286.

Were you a Brownie or Guide?...or a Scout or Cub? Do you remember what

it was like to do something independent of your parents but with a large group of people your own age when you were still in secondary – or even primary – school? Would you like to help other young people have that experience?

If the answer to the last question is yes, why not volunteer for Girlguiding? The Wendover District of Girlguiding needs volunteers (female and male) aged 18 or over to help with its Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers units. The 250 or so girls in the Wendover District have all sorts of adventures, tailored to their age groups, and meet during term time, usually once a week.

If this sounds like your idea of fun, please get in touch with Mary Thompson on [email protected] or 01296 624464. You won’t regret it!

over 40 years. Originally one of the first baby and toddler groups in Wendover, it was founded by Mrs Eileen Condie with a view to creating a welcoming and happy environment where children and parents could play, relax and make new friends. It’s a group run by parents for parents.

Unfortunately, the group is now struggling and faces possible closure in the new year if we cannot revive it.

This September will see a brand new art and messy play program, all new songtime and a selection of healthy snacks offered each week, along with an exciting new collaboration with the Wendover Children’s Centre.

A grant last year from the Lionel Abel-Smith trust has allowed us to purchase some new toys and the layout of our room has been altered to make better use of the space.

If you are the parent or carer of a child aged 0-4, we would love to see you at the

group. We’re at Wendover Memorial Hall each Monday during term time, 1.30-3pm. For more info, please contact us at [email protected] .

Beaver Leader NeededCan you help? One of our Beaver Leaders is going to step down at Christmas and we are now in need of someone to take on the reins. Beavers are the first section of the Scout movement and open to both boys and girls of 6-8 years.

The leader role involves co-ordinating meetings. The two Beaver colonies we have work together to plan the weekly meeting and Scouting provides tonnes of ideas for things to do each week. The co-ordinating leader’s job is to make sure everyone - helpers, leaders, parents and Beaver Scouts - know what is happening each week. Training & support will always be available.

Wendover Tennis and Squash ClubTennis and Squash coaching for the Autumn Term starts the week beginning 8 September, full details of the coaching programme can be found at www.wendovertennisandsquash.co.uk. It has been a busy summer for our Senior tennis teams who on the whole have had a successful season. Winter matches start at the end of this month with 7 teams entered in Ladies, Men’s and Mixed competitions.

Mid Bucks Beekeepers AssociationOur summer events culminate at the Apiary on 7 September with our end of season BBQ. The first winter talk will be held on 17 September. The speaker is Barbara Dalby and she will be talking about Apitherapy, full details can be found at www.mbbka.org.uk .

The summer has been a good one for honey production, with the last major nectar flow finishing in mid August. Colonies are now being prepared for winter by treating them for disease, ensuring they have enough stores for the winter and protecting them from pests such as mice and woodpeckers.

Riding for the DisabledRiding for the Disabled Groups based at Weston Turville urgently need more volunteers to help with their sessions on Wednesday and Friday afternoons, term time only. The Groups cater for riders from Booker Park School on Wednesdays and the Pace Centre on Fridays, and volunteers are needed as teams of 3 to help each rider.

Purssell PathSome thoughts on the problem:-•If the road bed is unacceptable, the use

of a grader could produce an acceptable surface in the short term until funds become available to resurface the pathway.

•If the public is apprehensive about the path being “unsafe” surely they can use their common sense by walking on a safer place.

•The need for a kissing gate on a permissive path festooned with signage is surely destroying the concept of the freedom and enjoyment of “nature” - do we need this “nanny state” intervention?

•Is it correct that the Meadow was ceded to the good people of Wendover for their communal benefit and enjoyment so that they could have unimpeded access to what is ours?

David Elliott

Purssell Path ResponseMay I respond to David Elliott’s letter.

Walnut Tree Meadow is owned by the District

Council - it is not common land. The Purssell Path is owned by the Wendover Society and was given to them to provide a “ransom strip” to prevent one massive development along the west side of the Canal. At some stage, when the public decided they wanted to have direct access (albeit somewhat steep) between the Meadow and the Path, the wire fence separating the Path from the Meadow was cut. The Society is concerned to ensure the Path does not become a public right of way and have received legal advice that to prevent this the fence should be re-instated but could, should we wish, include a stile or some form of gate. Our preference is for a kissing gate that would allow continued public access into the Meadow. The “Permissive Path” sign is necessary to protect our ownership. We are not proposing to close the access between the Path and the Meadow.

The proposals are intended to protect our rights should a developer (or the District Council) seek to take advantage of this

You Write

access in the future, which we believe would be to Wendover’s detriment. The Council’s recent sale of the former Children’s Play Area in Barlow Road for housing development is reason enough, we feel, to warrant taking such steps. Whilst the use of a grader might help improve the condition of the Path, it would be costly and beyond Wendover Society’s reach and remit. As we stated in our July letter, Bucks County Council are responsible for the condition of all local footpaths. If they decide the footpath is unsafe, they will close it to protect their legal liability. We would expect the public to use their commonsense as to whether they then choose to walk on it.

 Graham WattsSecretary, The Wendover Society

Canal ComplaintsAfter reading this month’s Wendover News and the letters section, I thought the response I received from the canal trust back in June would be of interest.

“We believe the vegetation is a big factor but despite the cutting of reeds/weeds every winter the warm and mild weather has caused them to grow at an accelerated rate. Unfortunately the channel has a high proportion of nesting birds and so legally we are not permitted to cut anything although we are looking at other alternatives. Where water levels are high we are doing everything we can to dispose of the excess water and taking into account the need to protect the neighbouring land and property.”

More Canal ComplaintsWe are getting a lot of complaints about the state of the towpath along from Wharf Road to Walnut Tree Meadow. We have reported this to the Canal and River Trust on several occasions and today told them that the issue had got worse after the recent heavy rain. They have sent us this response and are happy for us to circulate this;

“We can confirm we are aware of this issue which is caused by a combination of two factors. The first being the fact that the flow of water entering the feeder from the Wendover Springs is significantly higher than it would normally be at this time of year, due to the heavy rainfall over the later

summer and winter which has led to high ground water levels. The second and more significant factor is that the vegetation within the canal has grown at an unprecedented rate due to the warm and wet spring. The vegetation is restricting flow and causing the level to build up. We have issued an instruction to our vegetation management contractor to clear a channel through the centre of the vegetation in order to restore the flow. This should be undertaken within the next couple of weeks at which time the water levels will reduce. We also have some work planned to improve the bank protection at Wendover and these will be completed later this summer.”

Charlotte HewesClerk to Wendover Parish Council

Editor’s note: The Canal & River Trust cleared a channel in the canal during the week of 4 August, and will be providing more information about water flow in the near future.

Sir David Higgins As a Wendover District Councillor I met with Sir David Higgins, Chairman of HS2 on 31 July during his visit hosted by David Lidington to see the impact HS2 will have on the local area. I accompanied Sir David as he visited London Road, Bacombe Lane, Ellesborough Road, St Mary’s Church and Nash Lee Lane in Wendover and Old Risborough Road in Stoke Mandeville after which he went on to visit Oat Close and the Oxford Road in Aylesbury, and Fairford Leys.

During the visit, I along with local parish and HS2 campaign leaders met Sir David and explained to him in detail the impact that HS2 would have on their community, and the further measures on compensation and environmental mitigation that they wanted to see put in place.

My thanks to David Lidington for arranging this visit during which Sir David Higgins was left in no doubt about the strength of opposition to HS2 and the impact it will have on our communities locally. Mitigation and compensation were discussed frankly with him as was the case for more tunneling.

I feel this was a worthwhile visit as Sir David Higgins was able to see the localities affected in context and local campaigners were able to put their views to him.

Cllr Steve BowlesSchool TransportI read with interest the article advertising the proposed Chiltern Ridgeway Free School. The people of Wendover and the surrounding area with primary school aged children may be interested in the school transport policy Buckinghamshire County Council operate regarding free home to school transport after a Free School opens which, allegedly, will cater for ALL abilities.

The Sir Thomas Freemantle Free School recently opened in Winslow with about 120 children and is now deemed to be the nearest “Grammar” school for Winslow and the surrounding villages because it is an “all ability” school. The Royal Latin School in Buckingham, 6 miles away, is the Grammar school where Winslow area children have

been able to attend with free transport for many, many years. Although The Royal Latin School’s catchment area still includes Winslow and the surrounding villages, parents now have to pay transport costs to send their children to this school and The Buckingham School. This means that parents who want their children to attend The Royal Latin School, and whose children have the 11+ qualifying score, and live in the catchment area, are forced to pay a considerable sum of money for transport because a few parents have decided they want a Free School and used buildings in Winslow to house it. Bucks County Council will only pay travel costs to the nearest school, Grammar or Secondary, but the Chiltern Ridgeway School will be both and identical to the Sir Thomas Freemantle School in Winslow in character.

I would urge anyone supporting the Chiltern Ridgeway Free School, which will “nestle in the Chilterns” to be very careful what

you wish for. Parents will end up paying for transport costs to the Grammar Schools in Aylesbury (or elsewhere) because this new school will be deemed “all ability” as described in the Wendover News, and that means “Grammar”. It is likely that it will be the nearest “Grammar” to Wendover. The lesson seems to be, if you want free transport to the grammar schools, do not support a free school.

Belinda Brackley

School Transport ResponseThe Chiltern Ridgeway School will not change anyone’s eligibility for free transport to a grammar school.

The proposed location of the Chiltern Ridgeway School hopes to cater for the areas of Wendover, Great Missenden, Prestwood, Stoke Mandeville and the surrounding villages.

Any families living in any of these areas already have a secondary school that

is closer than the grammar schools of Aylesbury, Chesham or Amersham. They would therefore not receive free transport to any of these grammar schools.

The Bucks County Council policy is that they will provide free transport to the student’s closest secondary school, whether that school is a Grammar, Academy, Free or State school.

The difference between our proposal and the Sir Thomas Freemantle School is that Winslow did not already have a secondary school that was closer than any grammars.

The Sir Thomas Freemantle School is now four times oversubscribed, and we know from the comments we have received that people do want more of a choice and are very supportive of our proposal. Our focus will be on the pupil as an individual and on giving the students the life skills they need to flourish. We strongly believe that by introducing class sizes of 20 we can enable

teachers to focus on the needs of every member of a class. By providing an extended school day we can encourage pupils to have more engagement with their education and support the development of their life skills. Our intention is to provide a school where children are excited by and enjoy what they are doing.

ThanksIn regards to the death of my late husband Clifford Hailes on 20 July, I would like to send a sincere thank you to all who attended his funeral at Amersham Crematorium on Wednesday 30 July, with a special thank you to all the kind neighbours and friends in Wendover for their messages of condolence and support given at this difficult time.

Mrs Maureen Hailes

Lights OutAlong with many other residents I attended the short but moving service at the Wendover War Memorial to remember the start of World War 1 which was preceded by ``Lights Out’’. It was good to see so many there with candles to symbolise Sir Edward Grey British Foreign Secretary’s statement in 1914 “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime” the service gave all us the time

to reflect on the sacrifice made by so many who gave of their tomorrow for our today.

Cllr Steve Bowles

Interesting FindI recently moved into our new house in Wendover (icknield close ) and found this engraved in concrete silt drain. It reads “remember POWs Enricky Bergmann and Karl heins schuts 1947”. There was a bad flood in 1947, so that’s why it was built, but I don’t know any more.

If any are interested to see or investigate, please contact me via the Wendover News. Thanks.

Editor’s note: Reader Julien FitzGerald has asked the Wendover News to publish the below apology on his behalf. It has been edited for space considerations, but appears on our website and Facebook pages in full.

An ApologyI think that the best way forward to alleviate the current animosity that has occurred between us, is to put pen to paper and offer you all a full and frank apology

for my recent behaviour towards you and feel that you deserve an honest and frank explanation as to the motivation behind my previous and recent actions, some of which were outside of my control.

I am not sure if any of you are or have been aware, that I have been undergoing treatment for what originally was thought to be hypomania, which is where a person’s ability to control their actions is not within their physical control. As I was un-medicated at the time, this can be the only justifiable reason for my behaviour towards you all. I don’t blame any of you for the way you acted, as I would have probably done the same under similar circumstances.

I have now received a confirmed diagnosis of bi-polar disorder (with associated paranoia, anxiety and depression), for which I am now receiving Community Psychiatric Nurse (CPN) support and medication to control my behaviour, my

moods and to prevent me going off at 100 mph and upsetting other people in the process.

I have also recently had surgery on my right hip for a labrum tear, which was more complicated than first imagined. I am now receiving post-surgical physiotherapy treatment for that condition, but I have been advised by my CPN that just having to cope with the postoperative pain would have hampered my mental stability.

In closing, I wish to offer you all, if I may, a full and unreserved apology for any upset or distress that I have caused any of you. I look forward to engaging with you all again when I recover sufficiently to allow future interaction with you. I hope that we can now put these matters to rest and say nothing more about them, as it is causing me a great deal of upset and distress. It was never my intention to upset anyone.

I was pleased to be asked by Anne to write something in respect of a person who will be missed by many people and organisations in Wendover. He would consider himself doing his work quietly, mostly behind the scenes, therefore not in the centre of a wide circle of acquaintances. He would have been surprised to know that so many wished to pay their respects at his funeral that the crematorium wasn’t big enough. There was a varied sample there from most walks of life, all acknowledging, from their different viewpoints, how Wendover was the better for John and his efforts.

John and Anne arrived in Wendover in 1968, as a newly-married couple. He was a very good precision engineer with the enquiring mind which needed to learn more. He had considerable practical knowledge and ability. He was therefore useful, and was sought out if something needed to be done. In that way, he chaired and became Treasurer of those organisations with which he was involved, despite working as well, which he did until the end of his life. By 1976, sons Richard and Edward

had arrived, and like all good dads, he was very active in the organisations providing facilities for them, carrying on afterwards as improvements were made for the future.

He was an organiser of the annual Wendover Carnivals which raised money for the hoped-for swimming pool. Once there was money to start building, volunteer labour was required and he rolled his sleeves up with many others and helped build it. The pool opened in the mid 1970’s and he was on the management committee, he and Anne obtained their lifesaving certificates to be qualified helpers at the pool. He

chaired the Pool Committee and did much valuable work negotiating terms as the responsibility for certain aspects of the pool changed hands.

By 1978, while Wendover Football club had a Junior team, there was no organised football for those over 7 years old. John and other parents started the Wendover football training club which later merged with the junior Wendover teams to form the successful Wendover Junior Football Club, with John as Treasurer for a long time.

His practical skill was sought once again and he was involved with the Wendover Arm Trust. His sleeves were rolled up again, as committee member, treasurer and worker on the site, until he died.

John had to be active, his work had to be correct and his committees got things done. He was not religious, as far as I know, but Christians judge people by the good they do and leave behind. John had reason to be proud of his sons and their families, together with the lasting good which came from his efforts. He has gone too soon and many will miss him.

Group. It was love at first sight and a year later, they were married at St Marys and Peter became organist and choirmaster for 7 years, whilst commuting to Uxbridge where he was a deputy headteacher in a busy comprehensive secondary school. Inevitably, a family came along in the form of daughter KT and son Matthew and both followed the musical and dance path laid out by their parents. Both children currently live in New York trying to follow the difficult show business pathway with Matthew already having appeared on Broadway in two leading roles. KT in the meantime has recently performed off Broadway in a production of “Spring Awakening” coincidentally written by Duncan Sheik who last year produced Matthew’s debut EP “No Sound At All”.

Both children are immensely proud of their mum for having directed a business from a standing start to what it is today, 40 years on and naturally are grateful for the training and support she has given them in their own careers. While Matthew works towards his next Broadway role, KT is auditioning in New York but also continues to develop the Musical Kidz Company and her own young persons theatrical agency TK Management Linda’s passion continues to the next generation and the Kercher name will hopefully continue to inspire future generations for the next 40 years

Just recently, ISTD awarded Linda with a Life membership of the society having been involved with them for 50 years.

An opportunity arose to open her own school

in Aylesbury and as this grew, she left her other schools behind to concentrate on her own business. Over 40 years, the school has developed into one of the most successful dance schools in the area, opening 6 days a week from 4pm onwards (often till 9pm) and 5 hours on a Saturday morning. The average pupil numbers grew to 200 and this is where it has remained, maintaining Linda’s ideal of limited class numbers to ensure quality of teaching.

Having been married at 21 and widowed at 23 (her husband Michael was killed in a tragic car accident), her dance passion pulled her through a most difficult time of her life. Linda thrives on helping young people and seeing them grow and at a time when she herself was trying to rebuild a shattered life, the youth she surrounded herself with gave her huge support.

Some ten years later, she met ( well actually ran over his foot in the Red Lion car park!) Peter, now known as one of the organists and players in the St Marys Church Music

In July, Aylesbury Waterside was filled with an audience celebrating the past present and future of Wendover long time resident, Linda Thomas (Kercher) as she watched pupils from her long established theatre dance school, with visiting guests from other local dance schools, perform a two and a half hour show, hosted by local celebrity Andy Collins. The event was orchestrated by daughter KT, who had especially flown back from New York and was in celebration of the school’s 40 year existence in Aylesbury, based for most of that time in Walton Parish Halls, Walton Street.

Linda grew up in a musical family and had an immediate love of dance, attending classes in all genres including ballet, modern, jazz and tap at Diana Broadbents school in Prestwood. She then moved temporarily to Hampton Hill, Middlesex with Diana before returning to begin teaching in Hemel Hempstead, Chesham and then Wendover (behind Lloyds chemist) with Yvette Sargent. Work then took her for three years to the Arts Educational School, Tring and London before going on to London College of Dance and Drama in Marylebone. During this time, Linda also trained within ISTD (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance) gaining honours in all genres and grades until eventually being awarded the highest teaching qualification award of Fellowship.

After a long haul, I would like to thank SCAS for assisting with procuring the defibs, Grant the electrician for providing his services FOC ensuring that both units have been installed correctly at Budgens and the telephone box at the bottom of the High Street. Thanks to Dary for allowing his wall at Budgens to be used for mounting the defib. Even if just one life is saved it will be worth all the effort. A lot of evidence will be needed and to this end four organisations have combined forces and have formed “Petitioning Organisation Partners” or ‘POP’ for short. Wendover Parish Council, Wendover Society, Wendover HS2 and Halton Parish Council are the four that make up POP, which has held its first meeting. Very useful discussions ensued which bodes well for a co-ordinated approach to evidence gathering

Happy Retirement Ian!We are sad to say goodbye to Ian Gosling who retires at the end of August. Ian is a familiar face to many in the village, you may have met him as the Parish Council Groundsman or latterly working in the Community Information Office in the Clock Tower.

Ian started working for the Parish Council in May 2000 and has displayed great dedication, flexibility and humour all of which reflect his love of Wendover. The Council will miss his vast knowledge of the Village and its history as well as his seemingly limitless practical skills! We would like to wish him and his wife Margaret many happy years of retirement.

The Community Information Office will be closed until the Council decides what the next steps are for the service.

New Members of StaffWe are pleased to welcome two new members of staff. Sarah Mitchell is our new temporary Assistant Clerk. You may know Sarah from the Red Lion and organising “Dolly Day” this year. Sarah also brings valuable experience as a Community Fundraiser for the Chiltern MS Centre. Anita Daly will be providing temporary support for our numerous projects which

include a Community Orchard, refurbishing the Manor Waste, work to the Pond and improving parking in the Village. The Council has agreed that Anita will provide support to the ‘Wendover Remembers’ Group who are helping coordinate events as part of the 100th Anniversary of WW1.

Collision with the Bus Shelter

On 8 August the bus shelter outside the George & Dragon was hit by a car in the evening and badly damaged. The Council would like to thank MJ Phillips Groundwork Contractors for their quick response to our request for help. They came the day they were called and removed the damaged and now dangerous shelter. The police reported the driver was not badly injured and no one else was involved. We are now looking at the options for a replacement shelter.
