Concert at St Mary the Virgin Saturday 22 Sept, 7.30 St Mary’s WT The Freeth Duo is recently formed and features talented local instrumentalists Sophie Dolman on piano and Elizabeth Stahlmann (Fellows) on violin. Sophie studied music at Aylesbury Music Centre and Trinity College of Music, teaches piano at Aylesbury High School and is also a music teacher at Waddesdon School. Elizabeth studied at the Aylesbury Music Centre, Purcell School and Trinity College and teaches piano and violin at Aylesbury High School. Elizabeth and Sophie performed with Herrick Hayes as the Cziffra Trio at St Mary the Virgin, Weston Turville in April of this year and were received with great enthusiasm. As a result they have since performed in the Aylesbury Vale Jubilee celebrations and in recitals at Chinnor Parish Church and St Mary’s Church, Aylesbury. In this concert the Freeth Duo are offering a wide variety of music from Brahms (Sonata in D minor), Dohnayni (Sonata in C sharp minor), Mozart (Sonata in E minor), Kodaly (adagio) and Malcolm Arnold (5 pieces - opus 84). This promises to be a fine and enjoyable concert towards the funds of St Mary the Virgin, Weston Turville and your support would be appreciated.

Enquiries: Roger Fellows 01296 424982.

Harvest Thanksgiving Sunday 23 September Despite this year’s strange spring and summer weather, crops have grown and are being harvested and we can be thankful for the assurance of food and other resources which sustain our lives. You are invited to share the season of thanksgiving by joining one of the church services on Sunday 23 September (at 9.15am with St Anne’s Roman Catholic Church, 10.30am with St Mary’s C of E Church, or at 11am with Wendover Free Church which shares St Anne’s building). There will be time to express our gratitude for what God has provided, but also opportunity to share with those who do not have the abundance we enjoy. Gifts of packaged food can be brought to the services to be sent to Aylesbury Women’s Refuge and gifts of money will be sent to various charities working abroad to relieve hunger.

Even More

Opening Hours We will close at 1pm on Thursday 20 September 2012 for staff training otherwise our normal opening hours will apply. For full details please see our website www.westongrove.com. Prevention of heart disease Many people are concerned about reducing their risk of developing heart disease as they get older. There a few lifestyle choices that can make an immense difference. Smoking. Giving up smoking is the single most effective change as it reduces the risk of heart disease by between a third and a half. We offer smoking cessation clinics for those who want to quit – please ask at Reception. Diet. Reduce the intake of fatty foods especially red meat and dairy products. Keep salt intake down. Eat at least five portions of fresh vegetables and fruit per day.

Obesity. An effective way to lose weight is through joining a commercial weight loss programme. You may be eligible for a subsidised subscription to join such a programme – discuss with a practice nurse or GP. Exercise. To make a difference you should do at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times per week. High blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. If your blood pressure has not been checked in the last five years please make an appointment to see a practice nurse for this, or check it at a local pharmacy. High cholesterol. Cholesterol is a type of fat that is made in the liver. While we need some cholesterol to keep healthy, high levels increase the risk of heart disease. We offer all those aged between 40 and 75 a blood test to check their cholesterol level and a full lipid profile. At the same time we usually

test for diabetes and check kidney function. The result is used to help estimate a person’s overall risk of heart disease in the next 10 years. Those at high risk (greater than 1 in 5 chance of heart attack or stroke in 10 years) are offered drug treatment to help reduce cholesterol. If you want to book a cholesterol test please ask at Reception, however, please understand that we are not in a position to offer regular repeat cholesterol testing. We do not recommend aspirin for general use for the prevention of heart disease because the risks of internal bleeding outweigh the benefits. A useful source of information on heart disease including a lifestyle check can be found on the British Heart Foundation website (www.bhf.org.uk)

Mimi’s Mission Quilt I am a Wendover mum with 3 young children who has been running a thriving sewing and quilting group called Wendover MakeClub We are originally a group of mums from the John Hampden school, but growing to include some very hip Grannies too, and share a love of making things in a traditional way. We love to sew, knit and make quilts. We sew together in traditional Quilting Bees where each member makes a part of the quilt. We make quilts for each other, for families who we know and love in the village who have suffered sadness or to celebrate joy. Our current work in progress is a quilt for the Mimi’s Mission charity which will be exhibited in the church and in various High Street shops ahead of it being raffled at Christmas to raise funds. I am running a new course for absolute beginners to make their own quilt, starting in late September and running through til Xmas at the Ellesborough Hall (daytime) and the Kimble Stewart Hall (evening class). Anyone interested can find the full details at http://www.plainstitch.blogspot.com/ or e mail me at [email protected] . You can also see lots more of my work on the website.

HS2 HS2 . . . The Olympics . . . and a bit of your time We punched above our weight at the Olympics…and we’re punching above our weight in the fight against HS2. The Olympics were a tremendous effort on the part of the whole nation. Every competitor spoke with great enthusiasm about the experience of being carried to a medal by the crowds. It was the best of British coming together for a common cause. And now, after 2½ years, there are serious cracks in the government’s resolve to force HS2 through the Chilterns. Now is the time to crack HS2 wide open and end this threat forever. Our Olympic competitors never gave up until they crossed the finish line. We’re going to cross the finish line and stop HS2. The volunteers at the Olympics were a happy and dedicated team. Wendover HS2 needs a team of spirited volunteers to help stop HS2. Just a bit of your time will do the trick. The more hands, the lighter the task. It’s really simple—you (and a friend) can sign up to help by contacting Marion Clayton on 01296 622 862 or [email protected]. Don’t miss this Olympic opportunity to make a difference to the Chilterns.

Further flaw in case for HS2 The announcement that First Group have been granted the Franchise on the West Coast mainline (WCML) undermines the Dft case for HS2 which they have always argued is for capacity reasons. In their statement First Group emphasise the unique nature of the West Coast mainline in having ‘a considerable amount of unused capacity’. It would seem that the Dft now accepts that the WCML does not have capacity issues or that it will be full in the next decade. This is further evidence that the case for HS2 is fatally flawed and we must all along with the District and County Councils continue to fight this proposal. Councillor Steve Bowles

Wendover Community Car Following their recent AGM, Tony Young stood down from his role as Chairman of the Wendover Action Group, operators of the Wendover Community Car service. Tony was one of those involved in the Community Car scheme from its inception some 15 years ago, both serving on the Committee and in the role of Chairman for the last 8 years. Tony’s retirement was marked by a gathering of volunteer drivers on 14 July at which a presentation of flowers and a gardening gift token was made on behalf of the Committee. Taking over the Chair from Tony is regular Community Car volunteer Jeremy Stevenson. The Community Car scheme continues to provide an essential lifeline to those in the Wendover area who have difficulty travelling. It is dependent on the support of local volunteers who each give up a few hours of their time each week to act as drivers. For more information on getting involved in this much valued service phone 01296-317769.

New Fundraising group needs you! A group of friends got together at the recent Summer Ball in Wendover, organised by Robert Duggan for Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice and Prostate Cancer, and were inspired to launch a new Fundraising Group for the hospice. Their mission is to organise events in the local area to raise much-needed funds, and they are looking for like-minded people to join them. Fundraising Groups in other communities say how rewarding their volunteer role is – and how much fun they have with their fundraising! If you’d like to find out more, please contact Community Fundraiser Nicola King on 01442 820732.

New charity shop coming Iain Rennie Hospice at Home (part of Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice Care) is opening a new charity shop on Wendover High Street during the first week of September. Keep an eye on the local press and Iain Rennie Facebook page for dates and times - and do pop in to meet Michelle and her team of volunteers. With your help we can make this new shop a great success and give more local patients with life-limiting illness the choice to stay at home. You can help by:

off during office hours from September)

• picking up a ‘rag bag’ to recycle your textiles, shoes,

handbags (anything too worn or torn to sell – we can recycle to raise money)

• joining our team of volunteers (speak to Michelle or call our Retail Team on 01442 827699)

• popping in and bagging a bargain!

Many people from Wendover and its surrounding area were Games Makers. Wendover News is very keen to honour these wonderful volunteers and the varied work they did. If you are a Games Maker, or know one, please contact Wendover News (details on page 1) with your photo and story. As well as honouring the Games Makers, why not pop along to the photographic exhibition in the cafeteria at the Guttmann Centre, Stoke Mandeville, which has as its theme "Olympic Dreams, Olympic Spirit" and is comprised of entries from Rotary's Young Photographer Competition.

Gordon Wong While the country r e f l e c t s o n t h e successes of London 2012, I am proud and happy to have been i n v o l v e d i n t h e momentous Games, both as a spectator and as a Games Maker volunteer. Prior to the start of the Games, I was delighted to have the opportunity to do a test-run of my new uniform, whilst speaking to and sharing my excitement, anticipation (and nerves) with some of the children at The John Hampden School in Wendover. For the Games themselves, I was part of the Press Operations team helping beach volleyball

players (took my own stepladder) with their post-match magazine and newspaper interviews in the Mixed Zone, as well as escorting teams back to their athletes’ areas. Being part of a team based at a unique and one-off venue at Horse Guards Parade made the whole experience that much more special, and the two weeks flew by in the end. I feel privileged to have been chosen to help, and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. In particular, it’s been wonderful to meet fellow Games Makers, several of whom are also Wendoverians, and I can now say, almost truthfully, that I represented Wendover at the Olympic Games. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this possible, namely my family for holding the fort for two weeks while I was off making sandcastles somewhere near The Mall! Happy memories.

Dawn Rance After attending an interview in June 2011, and volunteering at the Basketball Test Event in August 2011, I felt very privileged to be chosen as a Games Maker for London 2012. I was part of the Press Operations Team at Wembley Arena, where Badminton and Rhythmic Gymnastics were held. I worked at the Media Centre Help Desk, assisting journalists and photographers from all over the world. Everything went very

Makers smoothly in the Media Centre until the evening when 4 teams in the Women's Doubles (who had already qualified for the next round) were accused of "not using one's best efforts to win", and were subsequently disqualified from the competition. Overnight, Wembley Arena became the centre of attention! I am so pleased and proud to have played my tiny part in "The Golden Games".

Liz Carson Having received a phone call from someone I knew, telling me volunteers were needed to help with the volleyball at the 2012 Olympics I went online, offered my services and started my Games Maker journey. Sport has been a large part of my life, playing volleyball to international level and, since retiring from the game, running a successful clinic in Haddenham providing sports injury treatment and rehabilitation. I was invited to attend an interview at the Excel in London where we discussed my history of playing and coaching volleyball, my experience of working and leading teams when serving with the Royal Air Force and my current role in treating sports injuries, and was lucky enough to be selected to take part in the Beach Volleyball Test Event held at Horse Guards Parade in August 2011. This country has a long and proud Olympic and Paralympic heritage having hosted the Olympic Games in 1908 and 1948, and being the birthplace of the Paralympic Games. I celebrated my birthday whilst working at the Beach Volleyball. LOCOG gave me a birthday card and Mika (the singer) wished me happy birthday and joined me in the above photo.

Chiltern Brewery Wins Gold The Chiltern Brewery, Buckinghamshire and the Chi l tern Hi l l ’s o ldest independent brewery has won FOUR highly prestigious 2012 Great Taste Awards for two of its bottled real ales John Hampden’s Ale 500ml and Lord-Lieutenant’s Porter 330ml, and for the Glad Tidings Winter 500ml Stout and the 450g jar of Hop Pickled Onions. The brewery shop in Terrick also stocks a fantastic range of chandlery including English wines, ciders and liqueurs; jams, honeys, chutney, mustard, biscuits, chocolate, sausages, bread and cheese - many made locally and using their own beer as an ingredient. The Great Taste Awards, organized by the Guild of Fine Food, are now in their 19th year. Their judging standards are the most rigorous in the UK and they only endorse products of the highest quality. Whole Creations Pizzas Since Kate Keane first launched her fabulous range of unique wholemeal base Whole Creations pizzas in March this year, the products have gone from strength to strength and are now available in Whole Foods Market’s amazing flagship Kensington store and on-line nationwide from Goodness Direct, where ‘healthy shopping is made easy’. They are proving very popular indeed and are attracting a growing and enthusiastic fan-base. They are readily available in Budgens. The Pizzas come in four outstanding vibrant and authentic Mediterranean flavour combinations, and recreate that dining-out sensation at home. The del icious, nutr i t ious and cr ispy wholemeal base is refreshingly healthy and the fabulously generous and tasty toppings will give you 2 or 3 of your ‘five-a-day’. Whole Foods Market Kensington is the largest of the Company’s five London stores and Kate was absolutely thrilled to have her Whole Creations pizzas listed there. Nationwide on-line retailer Goodness Direct stocks ‘delicious foods to help you eat healthily’ and are proud to be promoting a range that so perfectly fits their ethos.

The Russell Arms The people of Butler’s Cross, in conjunction with the team behind No. 2 Pound Street in Wendover, are proud to announce the re-opening of the Russell Arms. Once the Prime Minister’s local whilst at Chequers, and ever a prime spot for Chiltern Ridge walkers, the Russell Arms may have had its ups and downs in recent times, but in this game changing year for Britain 2012 we will see the very concept of the ‘local’ redefined, as the pub becomes not only a place to drink quality local ales and eat regionally sourced classics, but a place to learn new skills with bread making classes, wine and beer tastings, and a chance to shop for top quality locally-produced essentials or for a quick pint after work, a business lunch or a decent Sunday Roast. The villagers have rallied together to save the pub, pooling resources to buy it. The diary is open for bookings and we can’t wait for you to become acquainted with what we hope will be your new local: the Russell Arms. Forum No2 Pound Street What a summer it has been! 2012 is definitely a year that the whole country will remember with pride and fondness.

The Taste of Summer on 4 August was such a great experience that we are hoping to create an annual event and we would love your feedback or input to make next year’s foodie festival even bigger and better! On behalf of the team at No. 2 and Florence Nightingale Hospice, thank you to everyone who helped to raise an impressive £300 for the market and £1000 through Monday charity coffee donations.

The celebrating doesn’t stop with the summer at No2 as we start gearing up for a new season and new offerings, with the start of Wine School this month, our bespoke Wine Tasting and Gourmet holiday to Tuscany in October, and an ever-increasing product list from our new, super-sized deli counter! We are also proud to announce that we will be providing Spectator Magazine’s Hampers for Christmas this year, taking over from a well known British institution. We’re sure to have an unbeatable gift selection, with everything from stocking fillers to full size hampers and, as ever, a personal and friendly service throughout. Legacy Inspired by the Olympics...... Have you been glued to the most exciting sporting event ever? Has it inspired you to get off the sofa and get fit? Or are you already fit and need some extra motivation? Why don’t you enter an event? Here in the Chilterns we have some amazing events for walkers, runners and cyclists. For additional motivation why not run/walk for charity? Exercise makes a positive difference to your body and mind, and raising money for charity makes you feel good about yourself on every level! So where do I start? Find an event you would like, make sure it’s an achievable challenge and choose a charity close to your heart. Rope some friends in - it’s a lot more difficult to stay motivated on your own without someone to spur you on and race against for a bit of healthy competition. Join a class and meet like-minded people. Local fitness professionals can advise you on up-coming events and training. There are many events you can take part in e.g. the Chilterns 3 Peak Challenge walk on 16 September (Iain Rennie); 5k fun run on 14 October (Florence Nightingale); the 15k Ridgeway Run (Tring Running club), to name but a few. Or looking further ahead our very own Coombe Hill Run in June next year. Feeling more ambitious and lucky enough to get a place? The Virgin London Marathon is 21 April 2013. JPR fitness run FIT2RUN classes with an excellent track record preparing both individuals and groups for events. Class members are invited to free training sessions and get free training plans or join in one of our Nordic Walks. Visit www.jprfitness.co.uk or call Jackie on 07788 568204.

Cricket Wendover CC juniors had a very successful season, with the U14s winning their league and U11s winning their division (the league will be decided in early September when we play the winners of the other division). U9s narrowly lost out on winning their division. An excellent Colts Day was organised with junior awards for the season. There’s no space to record all the age group awards, but the overall U12+ awards went to:

Senior batting: Tom Nicholson Senior bowling: Brandon Ridgeley Senior all rounder: Dan Norton Congratulations to all award winners.

Thanks also to parents and team managers who had the unenviable task of arranging and re-arranging matches to suit the weather. Thanks also to the various coaches who have run sessions for young people at the club, and also those people who have arranged and run the Cricket After School Club at Wendover Junior School.

Wendover CC beat 3 other teams in reaching the final on 28 July of Amersham CC’s 6-a-side competition for local clubs during their Cricket Week. Winchmore Hill batted first and were restricted to 76 for 4 off 5 overs, thanks to tight bowling and athletic fielding, especially with Jon Green taking a towering running catch just inside the boundary and

Mike Green throwing down the keeper’s end wicket from long off for a run out. Wendover raced away in their innings as George Robinson and Mike Green both peppered the boundary with fours and sixes. 2 wickets fell in mid innings but Seb Barr kept up the impetus with Robinson and the reply only faltered against left arm spin in the final over. However Wendover scampered the winning run with 2 balls and 4 wickets to spare, gaining the trophy in impressive style. Team: Mike & Jon Green, George Robinson, Seb Barr, Chris Morley and Sam Boardman. In the Mid Bucks League Premier Division, the 1st XI have struggled but recorded a timely victory at Cadmore End on 11 August. In contrast, the 2nd XI won 3 of their last 4 games in Division 2 and drew the other. Notable performances have included Jonathan Seabrook’s 4 for 14 in the 8 wicket victory at Downley and James Heafford’s 4 for 39 and 22 plus Dan Norton’s 23 in the drawn game v Potten End. George Robinson scored 42* in the 9 wicket win at Waddesdon and followed it up with 5 wickets for 6 runs in the 5 wicket defeat of Hampden, where Shanil Patel scored a fine 63. Looking ahead as we near the end of another cricket season, the annual President’s Day match will be held at the Witchell Ground on Saturday 29 September from 1.00 p.m.

We have activities on most days of the week and cater for Juniors from pre-school age. Full details can be found on our website www.wendovertennisandsquash.co.uk. A reminder to all Squash members that the new membership year for Squash and Racketball commences on the 1 September.

Mid Bucks Beekeepers Association The bad weather throughout the early part of the summer has meant that many of our members are reporting a very poor year for honey production. Our monthly winter meetings start on 19 September, at the Bowls Club on the 3rd Wednesday of the month with guest speakers presenting on both Beekeeping and non-Beekeeping topics. A full list of the programme can be found at www.mbbka.org.uk. Our new Beekeepers Course is now open for registration, and we recommended that those wishing to attend apply early.

Chain Shops in Wendover I write in support of the letter of Andrew Radford in the July edition of Wendover News concerning chain shops in Wendover. Like Andrew, I have lived in the area for many years. Over this time I have seen towns such as Tring and Princes Risborough lose many retailers and slide into recession only to become vibrant and successful again. In both of these cases like so many others, the arrival of major retailers has saved the town centre. In both Tring and Princes Risborough the arrival of M&S and Costa started a successful revival, attracting shoppers back into the town and helping smaller retailers flourish. It is a well known strategy of retail developers to secure major retailers as anchor tenants, attracting other businesses and shoppers. Having both a Tesco and Budgens in the town has certainly not been a negative, with both retailers providing an essential service. Like everyone else I certainly want to see the smaller businesses flourish in Wendover but a “one size fits all” planning strategy does not work. This has been clearly demonstrated by the numerous empty retail units that have been vacant now for months. It is often major retailers that have the finances to make the necessary investment to fit out a new retail unit and then ride out a period of reduced trade. I would certainly welcome the arrival of

a high street name or two in Wendover, restaurant or otherwise. A Pizza Express or a Zizzi would indeed provide a vibrant but affordable venue for the locals and their families to enjoy creating employment opportunities, especially for the young. In fact I'm sure the pubs and other retailers would benefit from this additional footfall. Surely this is better than having empty and decaying shops all along the high street. Like Andrew, I hope that those responsible for the current planning strategy start to consider an alternative approach that welcomes both large and small businesses alike before it is too late for Wendover.

Plastic Bags The new sets of containers for recyclable material have now been delivered to Wendover. I am sure that this will greatly help to reduce the amount of material going to landfill since there will now be a separate household collection of cardboard and kitchen refuse which will be recycled. However, we should note that plastic shopping bags (given away by supermarkets and other shops) are not recyclable. I should like to suggest to Wendover residents, shop owners and shop managers

that we all now work together to make Wendover a "plastic free" village. Wendover residents, all you have to do is to take with you a "long life" or permanent shopping bag when you go shopping so that you do not need to use the "free" plastic bags. Wendover shop owners and managers, could provide a small incentive such as donating one penny to a named local charity for every five pounds spent by a customer who does not use one of your plastic bags. I should be pleased to hear from anyone who shares this point of view or who may have other ideas for attaining this objective.

Wendover Library Car Park I would like to alert your readers to the perils associated with parking in Wendover Library car park. I parked my car at 3.22pm. Despite anticipating that I would not exceed the free hour I purchased a ticket which permitted me to remain in the car park until 08.00am the following day. When I returned at approximately 5.00pm, I was amazed and annoyed to find a parking

fine. My car had been observed from 4.22pm to 4.28pm (exactly one hour after I purchased my ticket!). The ticket had blown off the dashboard on to the seat but was still clearly visible. Naturally I raised objection sending my valid ticket and posing the question: “Having parked my car within the designated area, purchased a ticket, should I no longer shop and take refreshment in Wendover and watch yet more shops close?” I received a reply advising that a full investigation would take place before a decision could be made, implying that this could be a lengthy procedure. The fine was eventually rescinded and I was sent a plastic ticket holder to affix to my windscreen. What was the cost to the taxpayer for this procedure? There are no means of affixing the tickets to the windscreen and they are unstable on a dashboard. I have never seen traffic wardens in this particular car park but if they are so diligent why don’t they make their presence of use to the driver by assisting with parking? Hopefully they are reporting the surface potholes or is serving the motorist beyond their remit!

Dog Fouling Once again it seems necessary to remind some dog owners that they are required to clean up after their dogs. The offending area is the most beautiful area that we have in Wendover, the canal path. As a regular walker of this area, not always at the same time of day, I have been surprised at the negligence of some people. This morning Friday 10 August about 7.30 a huge amount was dumped in the middle of the path. At this time of the year there are a great many children using this path, and they, having been encouraged to go out and enjoy the countryside, should not have to be careful where they walk because of some really lazy people. It is not acceptable either to leave little parcels hanging in the trees or on the paths, do these people think that someone is going to clear up after them? Please clean up your act, most people have, but a few obviously do not respect their animals!

Nicky Gregory of Antiques at Wendover received a fantastic response to her letter Sharp Memory? in the August edition of Wendover News:

Earnest John Sharp was born in November 1873 (died 1959) at The Bothies in Halton, he was the son of Thomas and Selina Sharp who had the Village shop and post office. As a young man he taught at the Rothschild School in Halton. His brother Frederick later ran the Halton Stores.

He owned the watchmakers and jewellers shop at No. 8 High Street, Wendover (now Christopher Pallet’s) from about 1897 (mentioned in Kelly’s Directory for 1899) until the 1950’s. The shop sign was a giant sized pocket watch and later the side of the building was painted white with the wording E.J. SHARP, Watchmaker, Waltham Watches A Speciality, MAB Razors, Musical Instruments. He also sold sewing machines and in the early 1900’s ran a cycle depot in the premises next door.

After the Great War he developed quite a busy side-line converting bullet cases, military badges and other wartime souvenirs into brooches.

1918 advertisement – Ernest J. Sharp, High Street, Wendover. Cycle Accessories, Covers, Tubes, Bells etc. Whistles, Nail Clippers, Shaving Brushes and Soap Boxes. And be sure you get it

named FREE. Watches Illuminated in a few minutes. All bought here named Free. I AM The Watch Glass King of the County. You must come here after trying elsewhere.

He was known to be a small plump man who rode a tricycle and a letter from Maureen Knock, his Great Niece, tells how he claimed to be one of the first people in Wendover with a motor car.

She also tells us he was a good rifle shot and won many medals and prizes and was in charge of winding the clock at the Clock Tower from 1896 to 1926 and with the aid of his telescope said he could see the Bristol Channel on a clear day!

(The New History of Wendover 1972 by Richard Snow, p 132).

He was a well known character in Wendover and lived above the shop. The door to the flat was in the alley way between the High Street and Back Street, it is now bricked up but the stone door step is still there.

Carole Murtha has written that her mother Doris Parsons worked for him in the early 1900’s. Later, in 1946, her parents rented one of his two premises and opened the first cafe after the war, the Wenda Cafe.

Local Bakers: Enrique & Maria

Enrique and Maria Barreiro were both born in Uruguay, South America. Maria studied law. Enrique has a Bachelor Degree in Marketing and worked most of his life as the head of marketing in financial companies. Once married, they moved to Majorca, Spain. Their three children were born and brought up there but now two live in Madrid and one, recently married, lives in Bedfordshire. Ten years ago, with the children having left, Enrique and Maria decided on a change of career and opened up a coffee shop in the main shopping centre of Majorca! They discovered that they worked very well with the public and enjoyed it very much. As time went on, they decided that they wanted to be nearer to their family in the UK. Earlier this year, they closed their current business in Majorca and moved to Wendover. In April, they took over the Bakers Shop in 1 Icknield Court, Back Street, HP22 6EB because they wanted to continue the tradition of a successful British village bakery. As well as classic bread and sweet goods, bakers have always filled the demand for tasty, quick, hot and cold take-away food and drink. Enrique and Maria plan to build on this

excellent foundation, responding to the needs and demands of their original customers and attracting new ones. They pride themselves on the freshness of their ingredients and Maria’s talent for well made salads, sandwiches and rolls, all at affordable prices. They have also become aware of the importance of hot pasties for the British palate so they are readily available for

customers who need to whizz in and eat “on the hoof”. A pre-order service is available on 01296 624642. They a r e o p e n t o s u g g e s t i o n s f o r favourite sandwiches and other snacks. Some customers have also found this a learning opportunity as

they can practise speaking Spanish when they shop. Enrique and Maria also offer a catering service for functions such as birthdays, parties, and weddings. Members of the public can go in and have a chat with them about their personal requirements in connection with this catering service. Maria’s specialty is her homemade Spanish apple pie – come in and taste it sometime!

View From The Chair As the 2012 Olympics has ended and the Paralympics is beginning, I thought the Chairman’s report this month should have an Olympic Theme. Since I became Chair in 2011, the process of Chairing the Parish Council has been quite a Marathon. I hope with the way things are progressing that we are near to the finishing line. We have hurdled many difficulties and hopefully nobody will be for the High Jump. I feel at long last there is a degree of synchronicity. All councillors have worked hard to ensure that Team Wendover is at last moving in the right direction and that there will be a lasting legacy for years to come. We are on the right track. We need to ensure that our budget/precept is organised and managed on a cyclical basis so that we are not reinventing the wheel. As with any team it’s not pleasant being hammered, if you give something your best shot then so be it. Remember we are volunteers. Parish Councils are elected every four years and we aim to do as our electors trust us to, using our best endeavours. We often wrestle with our thoughts when deciding what view to take; some people think that we shoot from the hip but with good guidance that should never happen. Thank you for all your support. We look forward to seeing you in September!

Teams of three compete against one another in a knock out competition on Thursday evenings starting promptly at 7.30pm in the Bowls Club, Dobbins Lane, HP22 6BU. The bar is open beforehand and in the interval. The fun starts on 11 October but team entries must be received at the Clock Tower by Monday 3 September.

Community Orchard Your Opinion We are in discussion with AVDC about the suitability of Walnut Tree Meadow (an area of land bordering the Wendover Arm Canal), for a Community Orchard. We would like to plant over sixty (at least one for each name on the War Memorial) heritage fruit trees native to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire, ‘parkland style’ over suitable areas of the Meadow (some parts of it are unsuitable because of the presence of ground water springs).

AVDC have asked for evidence that the above project would have the support of the community. We hope at the same time to re-establish the presence of

locally sourced Walnut Trees in the Meadow and intend to keep the open nature of this publicly owned land. Please let us know at the Clock Tower if we have your support or otherwise, for what we feel is a lovely project and would be called the Wendover Jubilee Community Orchard.

The Clock Tower The Clock Tower building is 170 years old this year and needs large scale renovations. The bell tower section is made of wood, and much of this needs replacing. The bell itself also requires attention, and we would like to put in an automated winding mechanism for the clock (currently wound regularly by hand!) The Council is launching a project to raise awareness of the history of the Clock Tower amongst the local community. We will be producing two leaflets and a children's worksheet for distribution, to help in this learning process. We need to raise the estimated £55,000 for these renovations. The Parish Council will contribute and we will apply for Heritage Lottery funding for the majority of the rest. We will also be launching a public fund to enable the whole community to donate as well. Please see our new website dedicated to this project on the Clock Tower www.wendoverclocktower.org.uk
