Co-ordinator’s bit

Have now had a bit of time to recover from our Fly in at Kingsmuir over the weekend of the 14/15th.The dates worked well for us as we didn’t suffer from the usual combination of words involving ‘Scottishaviation event’ and ‘rain’.

Having set up on the Friday PM Keith Griggs was first arrival in his Emeraude breaking last year’s duck.Saturday was warm and sunny but Sunday dawned with dense fog/haar which burnt off mid morningbut could be seen about a mile offshore, the threat of it returning reducing visitors. Overall a successfulfirst time at this venue with over 30 visitors over the two days.

Many thanks to the landowner Dave Smith for all his help and particularly to Duncan and Alex andtheir respective families, as well as Colin Rodger, for looking after the radio as well as Trevor who liasedwith Dave Smith. We have already identified a few areas for improvement next year and if you haveany more suggestions I would be glad to hear them. We seem to have picked the best weekend forweather this year with both the previous and subsequent one being a bit wet and windy

The next meeting is at the Harrow on September 5th and Keith Boardman will be giving us a slide showon his visit to Oshkosh this year. His RV 12 has moved to Perth for completion and first flight so with abit of luck we will have two Strut members’ projects taking to the air this year.

Finally with winter approaching I would like to make my annual plea for suggestions for speakers overthe winter period.

As always enjoy your aviation. Iain

After two consecutive years of our annualfly-in being rained off at Glenrothes, thisyear’s fly-in at Kingsmuir was bathed in beau-tiful hot sunshine.

As a consequence we had 35 aircraft move-ments on the Saturday and 19 on the Sunday, according to the log. The longest trek wasmade by a Eurostar G-CEBF from Sturgatenear Leicester, for a night stop, and several

aircraft ventured from Inverness and sur-rounding areas (Dalcross, Dornoch and FearnI believe). Skyranger G-CDHE and EscapadeG-CDKF arrived from Manchester Barton  viaCarlisle and Eurostar G-CEBF arrived fromFishburn on the Sunday.

Other aircraft types included a Rans RV-4G-INTS which was first in at about 11 o’clockon the Saturday; Coyotes, Condors, Cub,

Fournier RF3, Foxbat, Gazelle, Jodel D150,Jabiru 400, PA28A Warrior, C152, Tipsy Nip-per, a pair of Sportcruisers, including our ownPawel Gazinski from Kirknewton in G-CFPA;the locally based Zenair 601 G-CEBZ andBolkow Junior G-ATRI; and several Flexi-wings - Pegasus Quik, 2 Skyrangers andBlade 912. Sooty Koutsoukos, (based Perth),arrived from Glenforsa on Mull in his

Renegade Spirit in tow with the RotorsportMTO autogyro. The most interesting aircraftvisually and sound wise was the Sky ArrowG-FINZ from Perth with its sleek bulletshaped fuselage, pusher propeller and T tail.Strut members’ aircraft were well represent-ed by Trevor Harvey’s resident yellowEmeraude G-BKUR, Keith Griggs’ Emeraude

G-BKKL from Perth and Justin Kennedy inEuropa G-ZTED. Gavin Hunter brought theBulldog and Jim McTaggart brought the Star-duster from Archerfield, respectively. Bothput on impromptu aerobatic displays at differ-ent times both of which were appreciated bythose on the ground.

A barbeque was held on the Saturdayevening outside the Kingsmuir clubhouse andwe were joined by David Smith, our host atthe airfield, with his guests.

The red Rotorsport UK MTO Sport autogyroG-CFVG flown from Perth by Alan Guroth puton an impromptu high angle attack display forthose gathered, as the sun melted into anorange and then pink horizon. Several mem-bers and visitors camped on the field over-night, with the temperature dropping rapidlyafter sunset and heavy condensation formingon the parked aircraft.

Sunday dawned damp and the haar hungacross the field long into the morning beforethe wind changed to blow off the mist to thesouth and the sky lift into a glorious blue.Aircraft had to be wiped clear of condensationbefore start up. Disappointingly, we had only19 movements on the Sunday, probably dueto the haar lurking off the Fife coast. Never-theless, it was still a relaxed and enjoyableday.

Thanks to Colin Roger, his young assistantScott and Alex McClintock for handling ATC,Iain Gibson our convenor for general set up,all those who helped to erect and dismantlethe car port (Control tent) and make sand-wiches and rolls at lunchtime for visitors andmembers; Keith Griggs for arriving first on theFriday evening and flying in and out all week-end, (to Lanark centenary celebrations onSaturday), and to add to aircraft movements. Thanks to Tim Rayner and Annie for setting upand overseeing the barbeque. Thanks to Jus-tin for giving me my first flight in a Europa.Apologies to anyone I have missed.

Everyone, bar none, enjoyed this wonderfulweekend, which was made so much morepleasant by the hospitality of David Smith thefarmer and the facilities provided by the pres-ence of the clubhouse.

Let us hope this venue can be used againnext year and that the weather is as scorchingas this year’s, as it makes for a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere and a worthy event in theEast of Scotland Strut calendar.

Colin Acland, a member of the Bolkow owners group at Kingsmuir, sent in this overhead shot. He adds, ‘enjoyed seeing the different aircraft that flewin and especially as it made the airfield so busy. We think we've got a great facility and hope that it will be used more so hope to see everyone again.Best wishes, Colin.’

Lanark Airshow centenary

Biggles goes ‘oops’

I normally wince when I see journalists making Biggles references, but foronce it is justified. Pilot Vince Hagedorn landed in a tree near Dundee in2009 and in the link below he will tell you what went wrong, what hedecided to do about it and why Biggles came to his aid.

Help ma boab!

"And they said that Hong Kong approach used to be tricky."Colin Lourie was looking out of his window in Stockbridge when he saw thisJapanese Airlines charter Boeing 747 on long finals for Edinburgh on thefifth of August.

‘Flying Boffins’ campaign

At our Fly-in, Keith Griggs flew out toLanark for the centenary celebration ofthe airshow that took place there in1910. He has found an article about itand sent this linkhttp://www.lanarkgazette.co.uk/news/Lanark-Airshow-centenary-fly-past.6482589.jp

F-15 Break-up ?

Thanks to Graham Clarke for sendingthis in. The story is that the longeronfailed behind the cockpit due to corro-sion, which led to the entire F-15 fleetbeing grounded.I’m not at all sure about this. There’sa touch of the computer graphicsabout the images, though that couldbe because of the relatively poor qual-ity of the presumably hand held cam-era. It’s that last image that looks allwrong to me. Any opinions?

The benefits of a parachute

Another from Keith Boardman. ‘Ballistic parachutes can work - watch thesevideos!’

Within the last week (from an article written 18th August 2010), BRSAerospace's parachute systems have saved the lives of another three pilots- two in the UK in a Cirrus aircraft (the pilots walked away uninjured), andone at an Argentinian air show. The first is featured on the BBC website athttp://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-10930035

In the latter case, the last flight of the Rans S-9 aircraft was filmed by aspectator, and can be seen below. The aerobatic sequence is in slowmotion so that you can see clearly what happens - in real life the wing cameoff in under a second.http://www.czechsportaircraft.co.uk/content/BRS_PiperSport_Standard_Lives_Saved_Count_Increases

The photo on the right shows what hard lives these performing Rans canhave.

I had a peek inside Jus-tin Kennedy’s Europa aweek or so ago and it’ssurprisingly spacious in-side. He’s also done itvery tastefully, I thinkyou’ll agree.

The strip location is a little over 2 nmnorth of Mintlaw, or 1 mile north ofFetterangus village, with the 500+mNE/SW strip running right up to the NorthUgie river. Lat / Long is approx. N57 33640 / W002 01 700 , and best to call outintentions prefixing 'Fetterangus Radio'using the nearby Longside frequency130.575 - those chaps are very oftenstooging around. There are two distinctundulations sloping down to the river, soprobably best to check them out with alow pass first. Look forward to seeing folk - sooner orlater.... Cheers for now / David Palmer
