On August 28 & 29, St.

Mary’s Mission conducted

its first Sunday School and

Youth Camp at St. Eugene’s

Chapel. During the first

day, the camp began with a

fun ice breaker session, and

continued on with other ac-

tivities including praise and

worship, bible study, jeop-

ardy game, interactive ses-

sions, and ended the day

with the Holy Mass.

On the second day, the par-

ticipants were given the op-

portunity to share their testi-

monies with everyone.

From many of the testimo-

nies that we heard, we have

come to recognize and un-

derstand the important role

that prayer plays in our

lives. We then moved on to

the Eucharistic Adoration

followed by our Sunday

Liturgy.

Overall, it was a blessed

experience for everyone

who attended the camp.

From participating in the

interactive sessions, praise

and worship, and the ado-

ration, we were able to

renew our spirituality and

were able to build a

stronger relationship with

each other.

The 2009 North American

Jubilee Convention was

hosted by the Dallas mission,

and took place in Addison,

Texas in Hotel Intercontinen-

tal, a five-star hotel, from

Aug 6-9.

The convention began with

the thurmeni leading us in the

Sandhya Prathana, and our

Catholicos, His Beatitude

Baselios Cleemis Catholicos

led the inaugural meeting.

After dinner, our cultural

programs started. We the

Toronto mission sung a song

relating to the Jubilee, and

some of the youth performed

a dance to a Christian song.

Besides our performances,

there were plays, skits, songs

and dances that really made

you appreciate being part of

the Malankara Church.

The next day Cleemis Pithave

gave a speech on “The Ma-

lankara Church, Today and

Tomorrow.” He encouraged

the youth to get involved in

every part of society, but to

also bring their Malankara

roots and influences into

whatever they do. He also

reminded the parents, or the

Malankara Church of today,

to all the more encourage

their children to become

active Malankarites, and to

not push them aside as too

young, or they will loose

their future church.

Tim Staples was a former

Protestant, now Catholic. He

was a person who would

again and again bash the

Catholic Church, and knew

every verse in the Bible to

prove it was not even Chris-

tian. Now, he is a famous

Catholic apologist, and

stands up for the true faith at

every moment. He was talk-

ing about how and “Why I

am a Catholic”, as his

speech was appropriately

named.

Fr. Herman Jayachandra

gave a speech on “The

Devil: Myth and Reality.

What About Exorcism?” Fr.

Herman came from India for

the convention, and he was

an exorcist. He spoke about

the true facts about the

devil, and what the lies

about Satan that our society

tells us are.

After Fr Herman, Mario St.

Francis spoke to us. Mario

was once an internationally

known athlete, fashion

model and actor, who was

born Catholic and went to

Mass every week, but only

had a true experience with

Christ not too long ago. He,

like Tim Staples expressed

that he was really happy to

see so many young people

here, and once again encour-

aged evangelization.

It was our Catholicos’

speech that set the tone for

the rest of the convention.

Again and again it was re-

peated that the need for

evangelization was needed

from the Malankara Catholic

Church. With only 25 years

Page 3 Malankara Catholic Church

A S uccessful N orth American Jubi lee Convention

under our belts, we’re not as

established in North America

as the Catholic Church as a

whole. Although I may focus

on the Catholic Church in its

entirety, I, and all of you fel-

low Malankarites, do have a

responsibility to at least give

a little notice and help to our

fledgling church. But as we

do this, we can’t forget that

the Church is made of people,

not beings. We have to estab-

lish a bond with each other,

and we have to strengthen our

faith together. If one has a

strong faith, bring it to the

whole church. If one can

speak well, speak for those

who can’t.
