Padre’s Corner September 2, 2018 Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Jerry Mazenko is a good friend of mine from Garden Grove, California in Orange County. At the ripe age of eighty-eight, he has been connected to my cousins in Westminster for many years. My fondest memory of this staunch Catholic, who remembers all of the anniversary and special dates of my year, took place in San Diego back in 1995. We went with my late Uncle Joe to a San Diego Padres afternoon baseball game at Jack Murphy Stadium, then also home to the Chargers football team. In the subsequent decades he prays for and encourages my vocation as a priest. Jerry has a keen sense of the challenges facing people of faith in these secular times, and is a powerful voice for the unborn child. On occasion he recalls persecution of the Church in Mexico during the 1930’s when he was an astute youngster. Government persecution during the Cristero years of the 1920’s were quite potent, decimating the number of priests available. About 1929, wrote author Juan Guajardo in the “Columbia” magazine of the Knights of Columbus, we read this penetrating historical event. “Of the country’s 4,500 priests before the war, only 334 remained. Father Pedro Maldonado was one of only two priests in the Chihuahua state who stayed with his flock. On Ash Wednesday 1937, he finished hearing confessions in Santa Isabel Parish at around three pm, and began his walk home. He had barely arrived when the silence was broken by rough knocks on the door. His attackers were waiting. The priest changed out of his cassock, threw on his sombrero and asked a parishioner for two pyxes to protect the consecrated hosts. Outside, his parishioners valiantly tried to create a diversion to allow him to escape, but to no avail. More than twenty-five raucous, armed men on horseback had arrived to apprehend him on false charges from anti-Catholic municipal officials. Hours later, the beloved pastor was brutally beaten to death. Of the twenty-five Mexican martyrs that Pope John Paul II canonized May 21, 2000, Father Maldonado was one of six Knights of Columbus priests and the last of the martyrs to be killed.” Pedro was born on June 15, 1892 in Chihuahua, Mexico to his parents Apolinar and Micaela. He was one of eight children. Entering the seminary in 1909, he was ordained on January 25, 1918 in El Paso, Texas. Under President Plutarco Elias Calles in 1926 were anti-worship laws, closing of churches and seminaries, and warrants to first arrest and then execute priests. Pursued by the authorities priests, like Father Maldonado, continued to offer Mass and the sacraments in the outdoors to avoid detection. Continues Juan Guajardo, “On that fateful Ash Wednesday, February 10, 1937, Santa Isabel’s municipal officials used false charges to call for his arrest. Some of the men who apprehended him still wore ashes on their foreheads. They forced him to walk barefoot approximately three kilometers from his La Boquilla neighborhood to the city hall... When the group arrived at the building, one official grabbed Father Maldonado by the hair and punched him. Two others hit the defenseless priest over the head with the butts of their rifles. Bleeding heavily, Father Maldonado was dragged to the second floor, where the vicious attack continued...That’s when one of the assailants mockingly fed him the Eucharist, which he was carrying with him and protecting... But they didn’t know that was his last wish, not to die without receiving the Body of Christ. That was how he entered martyrdom.” The horrific action prompted the good faithful of Mexico to rise in protest, leading to the repeal of anti- worship laws by the governor of Chihuahua on April 26, 1937. Margaret Atwood was quoted in “Good Housekeeping Magazine” saying this: “In the end, we’ll all become stories.” Hopefully our stories will be grounded in faith, courage, and spiritual tenacity. Life is tough. Losing one of my cats Friar on April 15 was a harsh reminder, after ten years of connection, that we have no permanent moorings to this world. The story of martyrs in Church history underscores the eventual disconnect. As the mores and laws of our culture grow in hostility toward the tenets of our faith, we need His strength to endure and overcome. Father Bill

TODAY TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8 Moses tells the people to always observe the statutes God has given them, without adding or subtracting from these laws. He reminds them that the law is just, and that any nation who heard their statutes would consider them a wise nation. Second Reading: James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27 James discusses the gifts that God has given to all people and implores them to respond by welcoming the words of truth that can save them. He emphasizes that through good deeds and pure conduct, our faith in God is proven to him. Gospel: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 The Pharisees observed some of Jesus’ disciples eating without first purifying their hands and ask the disciples why they are going against their ancestor’s traditions. Jesus responds that nothing from the outside can make a person impure. The only true evil, acts such as fornication, murder, and greed among others, come from within and make a person impure.
