LancasterRedDevilsFor the fi rst time in a long

time, Lancaster may be one of the teams to beat in the Northern Neck District.

Although the Devils return only a handful of experienced players, coaches around the league are taking Billy Jarvis and his team of 27 seriously.

“They looked good in the scrimmage. They’ve got some talent,” said James Monroe coach Rich Serbay.

“I think they’ll be one of the tougher teams,” added Northumberland coach Tony Booth.

The praise “is nice,” said Jarvis, who is starting his second year as LHS’s head coach. “But I’m a fi rm believer in this—JM is not going to give up anything. Essex played in the state champi-onship and they’re not giving up anything. And, hey, just because Joe Taylor is gone at W&L, they’re not doing away

with that football program. “If we win, we’ll have to

pay the price. We have to beat those teams before we can start pounding on our chests,” he added.

When Jarvis came to Lan-caster last year from Rich-mond, he described the Northern Neck District as having “the big three and the little three,” with Lancaster being in the latter half.

He hopes the Devils will break into the upper echelon this season.

“The top three deserve those spots because they’ve worked for it,” said Jarvis. “You can’t put anything over on those teams. They’re not going to get tricked on a trick play and their special teams are always ready. They’ve got good programs and they work hard.

“I really believe we also

Lancaster picked up a couple of Northern Neck Dis-trict wins last year but still couldn’t topple the big dogs -- Essex, James Monroe and Washington & Lee. And until they do, the Devils can’t do a lot of bragging, according to coach William Jarvis.

Lancaster will be better. That’s the consensus around the district. But just how good is the big question. Some coaches have picked Lancaster to fi nish among the top three. But the Devils lost some explosive potential in all-around athlete Akene Savoy. Plus Lancaster lost its anchor on the line in Brian Jarvis.

However, the Devils do return four to skill positions on offense and have the ability with mobile quarterback Jamie Veney to score. The offensive line, always a trou-ble spot for Lancaster, is untested and small, weighing in on average at 180.

Look for Lancaster to fall in the middle of the pack, fi ghting for the number three or four spot.

have some of the best coaching in the state right here in the North-ern Neck,” added Jarvis.

Jarvis’s fi rst season with the Devils turned out to be a 4-6 cam-paign, but ended with a school record 62-0 win over Arcadia.

Jarvis got a fi rst look at what this year’s team can do during preseason workouts against King William and Arcadia.

“I was really pleased with our effort and hustle,” he said. “We chased the ball well on defense and our offensive linemen followed the ball down the fi eld on every play.”

Lancaster’s stopping unit recovered four fumbles against King William and Cavell Robinson returned an intercep-tion to the 1-yard line against Amelia.

“What I did see is a big improve-ment,” said Jarvis, noting that the Cav-aliers scored 6 times in 12 plays against Lancaster in last season’s scrimmage. King William scored just once in the 36 plays this time around.

“The kids know that King William, Mathews, Sussex, James Monroe and Essex have been playoff contenders every year,” said Jarvis. “And last year,

when we played somebody that was ‘good’ we’d give up two touchdowns in the fi rst quarter and end up just play-ing catch-up.

“We’ve built some confi dence and I don’t think that’s going to happen this year,” he said.

OFFENSEJarvis returns two all-district per-

formers in quarterback Jamie Veney and tailback Montel Mitchell.

Veney, who is making the move from tight end to quarterback, took the snaps

during the second half of Lancaster’s season fi nale win over Arcadia last year.

At 6’2” and 190 pounds, he has a pres-ence behind center, standing tall in the pocket.

He’s also mobile. “If the run is there, he’ll take it,” said

Jarvis. “In high school, you take the sure thing.”

Veney can also pass the ball. He hit Curtis Henderson for a 40-yard TD pass in the scrimmage with Amelia.

Henderson and Robinson, along with new-comers Ge’Ron Wiggins and Leif Mieras, will push senior returner Bobby Crockett for playing time at wide receiver.

“I’m very pleased with our wide receivers,” said Jarvis. “We’ve really got a good group and it doesn’t matter who is in there. There’s no real drop-off in talent.”

Senior Rob Gutknecht returns to play tight end.

Mitchell returns to the backfi eld at tail-back and is joined by sophomore newcomer Jonathan George at fullback.

Lancaster’s line is the big question. “We’ve got no small helmets left and no

small pants; we’re that little,” said Jarvis. He’s not exaggerating. Freshman Lee Kuykendall and junior

Rakeem Laws will start as tackles, sopho-mores Cleon Rice and Darryl Doggett will start as guards and junior Mychal Laws will snap. The fi ve average 179 pounds.

DEFENSEThe goal this year is to have as few play-

ers pulling double duty as possible, with M. Laws, Mitchell, Veney and Gutknecht as Jar-vis’s only two-way starters.

“We can’t get people hurt,” said Jarvis. “Although our numbers are up, some guys still have to play both ways. You can get away with seven or eight guys going both ways if they’re big, strong athletes and phys-ically better than the others. But we don’t have those big guys that can do that.”

Veney will start at defensive end along with Mieras, while M. Laws will play middle linebacker. Gutknecht and sophmore Marcus Segar will play outside linebackers.

The line will include Veney and Mieras, along with Doggett and junior Gary Ward-law as tackles and sophomore Brett Jarvis at noseguard.

Wiggins and Henderson will likely start as cornerbacks and Mitchell will be down the fi eld at safety.

SPECIAL TEAMSLancaster’s special teams have struggled

in the past but made a major improvement last year. Two years ago, the Devils were giving up at least a touchdown a game on special teams breakdowns.

Junior Jonathan Frith returns to kick fi eld goals with “a stronger leg than last year,” according to Jarvis.

Long-snapping will be Scruggs and junior Devon Davis with Gutknecht holding.

First-timer Marcus Segar will punt and Jarvis likes the way he looks.

“He takes one step and gets the ball away and that’s what we need,” said Jarvis.

Wiggins, Henderson and Mitchell will run the ball back on kickoffs and punts.

SEASON OPENERThe Devils will open regular season play

Friday, September 3, at home against Nor-thumberland.

Although the game doesn’t count in Northern Neck District standings, “it’s a big game,” said Jarvis.

“It’s not just the fi rst game and you want to win that one, of course,” he said, “but beating Northumberland gives us the next nine weeks to walk around saying we beat our neighbor and our arch rival.”

Lancaster and Northumberland will meet again on November 12 to end the season.

It’s tough to fi gure the Indians out this year.

With just one returning starter on offense and three on defense, this could either be a coming-out party for a bunch of little-known talents or a rebuilding struggle.

The Indian roster is an unfamiliar roll call of names. Everybody’s new, right down to most of the staffers.

Leading the charge is new head coach Tony Booth, a three-year vet-eran on the sidelines as co-offensive coordinator. He took the reins from departed Terry Meehan, whose Indi-ans went 6-24 in three seasons.

A sixth-grade teacher at Northum-berland Middle School, Booth is a a 1996 graduate of NHS and former player, so he knows the Northern Neck District, its top dogs and its his-torically struggling programs.

Although neighboring Lancaster hasn’t enjoyed many successes in the past decade, Booth says LHS should be one of the tougher teams this year and is readying his Indians for a season-opening battle against their league rival.

“I think Lancaster will be one of the teams to beat in the district,” said Booth. “But right now, that’s the only team I’m worried about beating. That’s the fi rst game and we need to get past [the Devils] before we can worry about any-body else.”

The Indians regional schedule pairs them against Lancaster, Mid-dlesex, Mathews, Wind-sor and Arcadia before they open district play against the defending state runner-up Essex.

Preparing with a group of newcomers, some JV grads and some fi rst-timers, means practice, practice, practice.

“If time would stand still and we could practice everyday that would help,” said Booth. “We need to be more cohesive, but that only comes with repetition.”

With only nine returners on a roster of 28, he’ll be asking a lot of his experienced players to go both ways.

OFFENSEStarting in the quarterback

position will be senior returner

Justin Mitchell, who replaces gradu-ated David Stables.

Mitchell got some starting time at the helm towards the end of last season and will lead Booth’s single-back attack.

“He’s the type of quarterback that won’t lose us any games,” said Booth. “And by that I mean he’s no Michael Vick. He’s not going to be fl ashy out there. He may not win the game for us, but he’s not going to lose it for us either. He’s going to do some positive things for us.

“What we have to emphasize is that

we need all eleven to win it, not just one,” added Booth.

Mitchell’s targets at tightend at various times will be returning junior Colin Smith, returning senior Gary Butler and junior newcomer Brian Seymour.

Seeing time at wide receiver will be junior returners Johnny Veney and Josh Jordan and newcomers, senior Chris Veney and junior Raymond Boyd.

Junior newcomer Brandon Webb and junior returner Dexter Sutton are still battled for the running back

“Justin is going to do some positive things for us.”

There’s a new regime at Northumber-land – on and off the fi eld. Tony Booth, after three years on the sidelines as an assistant offensive coordinator, has taken over the head coaching responsibilities, fi elding a team of mainly newcomers.

There are few familiar faces or names on the roster. With just fi ve seniors, and only three of them back from last year, the Indians are rebuilding.

Last year, coach Terry Meehan had the seniors and the leaders, turning around a 2-18 two-year mark to pick up three regional wins and one in Northern Neck District play. Booth isn’t making any bold predictions but does say his team is tal-ented with the ability to pull off a few sur-prises.

The Indians’ regional schedule includes Middlesex, which is coming off an 0-10 season, a strong Mathews team and the Eastern Shore’s Arcadia. A good start for Northumberland will be against dis-trict rival, Lancaster. Around the league, coaches pick Northumberland to fi nish somewhere in the bottom three.

The injury bug bit early and often last year at Rappahannock.

The difference this year between another 1-9 campaign and a suc-cessful run for post-season play will be avoiding aches and pains.

“Basically we have to stay healthy and I know we can score some points,” said coach William West. “If we hadn’t been so banged up we wouldn’t have played that bad. I’m just going to chalk up last season to injuries.”

According to West, the Raiders never put a full starting crew on the fi eld in a single game last season. They were always missing one, two, three or four to injuries.

With the starting running backs injured for most of the season, “we were forced to pass a lot, and that didn’t work. We had limited access in the backfi eld.”

It was hard to pass, he added, when the other team knew it was coming.

“With nobody lined up in the backfi eld, what else were we going to do,” he said. “They saw it coming.”

West returns one of the most experi-enced squads in the district with nine back on offense and another seven back on defense.

“We’re excited about the season,” he said. “Excited about keeping everybody injury-free and win-ning some games.”

The Raiders hope to start by beating Windsor on Septem-ber 10. Rappahan-nock opens a week later than most of the district teams with a regional sched-ule that includes the Dukes, King & Queen, Charles City, Sussex and Surry. They open district play against Region A runner-up James Monroe.

“It’s not a good schedule,” said West. “We’re playing a Tri-Rivers schedule really for the fi rst half of the year.”

Rappahannock went winless at

0-5 in the Northern Neck last year.

West doesn’t want to make any predictions or talk about upset-ting any of the league’s giants like JM, Essex or Washington & Lee.

He simply says, “We’re not look-

ing to surprise anybody. We just want to win ballgames.”

POWERANALYSISAfter a successful fi rst season, coach

William West has gone winless in North-ern Neck District play for two years. With back-to-back 0-5 league campaigns, the Raiders are seeking their fi rst district win since 2001 when they face defending play-off team James Monroe in early October.

Rappahannock beat Middlesex in a pre-season test two weeks ago but face a tough regional schedule with King & Queen, Susex, Surry, Windsor and Charles City. As always, Rappahannock will rely on the run but found its ground game non-exis-tent last year when injury after injury plucked away at the backfi eld. The losses doomed an already not-so-deep team. West fi lls his experienced roster with 17 seniors and 11 juniors this season and says barring any injuries his Raiders will record some upsets.

Most coaches, however, are picking Rap-pahannock to fi nish in the lower half of the pack.

“We have the ability to pass with Jarrod. So we hope to have success moving the ball both ways.”

to his spot behind center as quarterback in West’s mul-tiple formation offense.

Scott will get some relief from backups junior Daniel Thrift and sophomore Devonte Reynolds.

Scott will target return-ing senior ends Matthew Drewry and Jake Woolsey. Senior Justin Hanks and junior Timmy Johnson will push Drewry and Woolsey for playing time. Although Scott has the

“ability to pass the ball” and has some capable targets, expect Rappahan-nock’s running tradition to continue.

Historically a ground game team, the Raiders “will have some success moving the ball both ways,” said West, “but we’ll run more than we’ll pass.”

Look for returning backs senior Kyle Oord, junior Malcolm Brooks and soph-omore Carey Towles to get most of the carries. Also playing in the backfi eld will be senior Jonathan Lloyd, juniors Leroy Johnson and Michael Hinson and soph-omore Grant Rice.

Senior Austin Smith returns to snap and will be surrounded in the trenches by senior guards Travis Marks and David Thomas

and senior tackles Walton Gouldin and Gordon Ball.

Also playing on the line will be senior Kyle Shef-fl ien, juniors Drew Mitchel, Scott Rustin and Chris Sanders and freshman Duwan Sumiel.

DEFENSEMost of West’s starters

will play on both sides of the ball with Smith and Gouldin sharing time in the guard spots along with Oord and Mitchell.

Marks and junior Mal-colm Brooks will start as tackles.

Thomas, Hanks and junior Leroy Johnson all return to an experienced linebacking corps. Also starting at inside line-backer will be senior Devon Veney.

Drewry, Oord and Scott will start as defensive backs with Reynolds and T. Johnson pushing for play-ing time.

“Everybody that’s play-ing defense has started at some point,” said West, “so I’m real happy with the defense we’re putting on the field.”

The Joe Taylor show is over at Wash-ington & Lee.

Departed is the one-man wrecking crew that tore apart defenses at will with the pass and run.

Coach Malcolm Lewis now has the monumental task of filling in the cra-ter-sized hole.

“I have to catch myself, to keep myself from comparing every move they make and every breath they take to Joe,” said Lewis.

He and Taylor, who is headed north to play at the U.S. Naval Academy, have led the Eagles to a Group A state championship, a state quarterfinal and a regional berth in three years, despite the fact the Eagles have graduated at least 15 seniors each of the last three seasons.

“Losses of this quantity are devastat-ing at the Group A level, but when one of them is arguably the best player to ever come out of Washington & Lee, it has to take its toll,” said Lewis.

“It eventually has to have an adverse

effect,” he added. “I’ve been proud of how we’ve handled those losses year in and year out but eventually it is going to hit hard.”

Returning just four players with any substantial experi-ence, Lewis says this year’s is the “greenest” team he’s had in years.

But don’t feel too sorry for W&L. It’s a school with a winning tradition and a highly-decorated coach.

Playing Group AA New Kent in a preseason scrim-mage two weeks ago, the Eagles scored once and gave up just one offensive touch-down. The Trojans picked off two W&L passes and ran them back for touchdowns.

“I was just looking for us to hang in there with them and we did,” said Lewis.

W&L will open against another Group AA school, King George. The traditional season opener against a rebuilding Foxes team should be a good fit for the Eagles.

A schedule that includes some heavy-hitters will pit W&L against Sussex, Mathews and King William in regional play.

“I like thinking about what this team could do,” said Lewis. “I tell my play-ers that teams are made up of drivers and riders. The key is to turn as many of your players as you can into drivers

as soon as possible.“Simply put,” he added, “if

we can get some of these young kids making key contributions early then teams are going to

have to work hard against us. That is all we have ever tried to do here, just be better today than we were yesterday.”

OFFENSEAlthough Taylor is gone, senior Devin

Smith is back. Smith, an all-state second team selec-

tion, “is an exciting receiver,” accord-ing to Lewis.

“He’ll move around offen-sively and get the pass from a variety of positions.

Getting him the ball will be the job of senior quarterback Josh Wittman.

“Wittman did a great job at the 7-on-7 tournament in the spring and we’re con-fident in his ability there,” said Lewis. “He’s tough, he has a strong arm and once he gets some experience under his

POWERANALYSISW&L has some big holes to fi ll. Success

this season will hinge on an untested quarterback and a whole bunch of new-comers.

With just four players returning with substantial playing time, the Eagles will join Northumberland as one of the most inexperienced squads in the district.

But don’t count Malcolm Lewis and crew out just yet. Lewis won the Group A title three years ago, advanced to a state semifi nal game two years ago and last year his team battled its way to a Region A quarterfi nal.

He does return an All-State (2nd team) receiver in Devin Smith. Smith gives the Eagles some big play potential. If the line comes together, expect teams to still have to work hard to stop a solid Eagle offense.

Look for W&L to fi nish in the number three or four spot.

belt, he’ll really be good.”Wittman also will target

receivers Mike Cote, Tony Reed and Jermaine Weldon.

Wingbacks include Smith, James Tuppings, Jamal Turner, Marquis Gray and Phillip Jackson. Barrelling for the short-yardage gains will be fullbacks Miguel Valencia, Thomas O’Rourke, Vernon Wil-liams and Devin Ball.

Up front the Eagles will be stocky but untested with senior Michael Butler returning at one tackle spot, while Zachary Hall,

Mathews Packett and Jerome Skinner still battle it out for the other side.

At guard, Mark Jones and Brandon Howcott are the front-runners with a push from reserves Dontavius Carey and Tavon Fisher.

The center spot will be held down by Brandon Usual and backed up by Steven King. Both are sophomore newcom-ers.

“We’ll be able to score,” said Lewis, “but perhaps we won’t be as dangerous as in the Joe Taylor era.

“We still have some quick feet and some big-play poten-tial,” he added, “but the key to the offensive success will be tackle to tackle.

“If the line comes together and finds some heart, expect teams to have to work hard against a solid Eagle offensive unit.”

DEFENSEDefensively, the Eagles must

improve. In a 4-4 defense, W&L needs

some critical play from its front four and only one player returns from that unit. Defen-sive end Brian Wilson will need to find three others “who can feed off of his intensity,” said Lewis.

Pushing for those spots are Fisher, Hall, Howcott, Carey, Packett, Ball, Skinner and Philip Kelly.

Edgar Luna and Jones return to anchor the linebacking unit. Phillip Jackson played his way into a spot “with an inspired performance” in the New Kent scrimmage, said Lewis.

Tion Turner, Caleb Tubbs, Ter-nell Brooks and Nick Lee are battling for the remaining spot.

The corner spots are also still up for grabs with Dexter Monroe, Turner, Reed and Tup-pings vying for those.

Smith has a lock on safety and will get some rest from backups Weldon and Wittman.

“If those seven or eight guys up front get tough, we could be okay,” said Lewis. “We cer-tainly need to be better there than we were last year when we lacked a good push up front. It all starts with the front four pluggers. If they’re get-ting moved all around, we got problems.”

Pull back the bow and take aim. Coming off a run for the state title,

the Trojans are the team every other team wants to beat.

“We probably do have a bull’s eye on our chests, but I don’t think any-more than some of the other teams with tradition,” said coach Todd Jones. “King William and Washing-ton & Lee both won state champi-onships and I just think that there’s good football around here and any team can be good. The Northern Neck is one of the toughest districts in the region.”

Essex won its fi rst Region A, Divi-sion 2 championship in school his-tory over rival James Monroe last year and went on to fi nish as the Group A runner-up.

The team got off to a 1-2 start but rode decorated running backs Carter Ball and Ramarcus Baylor right to Harrisonburg two weeks before Christmas.

Fans may not be interrupting their holiday shopping for a state repeat this year, but don’t count Essex out of playoff contention.

Jones lost seven starters on offense and six on defense but brings back quarterback Josh Beamer to lead a new spread offense that includes three return-ing starters.

Essex is already showing scor-ing potential, putting the ball in the end zone three times against Bruton in a preseason scrimmage two weeks ago.

“We had a few interceptions. We’re getting used to the new offense but we also had some catches on some long pass plays so we can get the ball down the fi eld,” said Jones.

OFFENSEBeamer “throws

the ball well,” said Jones, “but he also gives us another running back there. People will have to play honest ‘cause he can run the ball.”

This is the fi rst time in Jones’s reign that the Trojans don’t return a single starting running back.

Instead, the Essex backfi eld will be fi lled with new starting rushers includ-ing senior fullback Ryland Veney and sophomore tailback Lamar Stewart. Junior Ben Thomas will push Stew-art for time and senior Antoine Rollins will sub in for Veney.

With Veney weighing in at 211 pounds and Stewart at 215, “the running backs are actu-ally much bigger,” said Jones.

“We’re going to try to distribute the ball a little more to more play-ers,” he added. “We don’t want to put pressure on one or two kids.”

Junior M.D. Headley will give Beamer a breather.

Sharing time at center will be sophomore Jona-thon Lee and junior T.J. Brooks.

Junior Matthew Brax-ton will join returning senior Jim Coleman as guards, while senior Wayne Taylor and soph-omore Terry Fauntleroy will start as tackles.

“Offensively, we’re taking some chances, we’re taking some smaller kids and put-ting them up front,” said Jones.

Junior returner Chris Mozingo will start at tight end with Headley and sophomore Pete

Hammack also seeing time there. Junior Lavon Baylor and senior

Will Clarke will also be targets for Beamer.

Baylor had four catches and Moz-ingo fi ve in last week’s scrimmage.

“I feel good about our chances,” said Jones. “Our players worked hard in the off season.

Jersey Name Grade Position Jersey Name Grade Position It’s going to be tough to improve on last year’s performance. A state champi-onship would be the only way to one-up what the Trojans did last season behind decorated rushers Ramarcus Baylor and Carter Ball.

But, hey, Essex will still be tough. Jones does return seven starters from the Group A championship contender team, includ-ing all-district selections Chris Mozingo and Josh Beamer.

Jones feels good about his newcomers work in the off-season and his new spread offense. And although he underrates his team’s talent, most area coaches don’t.

Football is serious business at Essex and other Northern Neck District teams will take the Trojans seriously.

Gone from James Monroe are the big play makers. Curtis Krauth. Jeff Scott. Robert Durante. Brain Nance. Andre Correa. Corey Lewis. The list goes on.

“I’m crying big tears here,” said JM coach Rich-ard Serbay. “I lost 25 of the best kids I’ve ever coached, so we are starting over.”

James Monroe posted an 11-1 mark last season as the Northern Neck Dis-trict’s regular season cham-pion and the Region A, Division 2 runner-up. The Jackets put 11 players on the fi rst-team all-district squad.

Serbay has lost all of them except two, including Krauth, the district’s defen-sive player of the year, and Durante, the district’s co-offensive player of the year.

He does return two dec-orated players in junior tackle George Long and senior lineman Chris Hall.

Other than that, Serbay

says, his is a team of JV grads.

But that’s not necessarily a bad thing, since the Yellow Jackets’ junior varsity squad also went unbeaten as the district cham-pions last season.

“Oh, but that’s a whole different thing,” said Serbay. “JV is a lot different from varsity. We’re young and we’re spending a lot of time just working on fundamentals.”

Serbay says he expects a lot of

mental mistakes. “We’ll be lining up wrong,

jumping offside. We’ll have delay of games, equipment penalties, all that,” he said. “In the scrimmage, we got fl agged twice for having mouthpieces out and another time for a butt-pad hanging out.”

James Monroe tied Orange County, tied Waynesboro and lost to Manassas Park in a trio of preseason scrimmages.

“We didn’t move the ball worth a lick,” said Serbay. “But I like the way we looked on defense. That’s going to be the strength of this team if we can get them in shape.”

OFFENSESerbay brings back just

two starters on offense including tackles Long and Hall, who’ll be joined on the line by senior guard David Reidl and junior guard Roland Winkler. Sophomore Sam Blancard gets the starting nod at center.

Still battling for the tight end spots are freshman Vitaly Willis and sopho-mores Sam Griebel and Dante Atkins.

Starting at fullback will be junior John Hardesty

and returning to the tail-back spot will be Steven Washington.

Washington rushed for some 500 yards and 10 touchdowns last season and “is probably the most pro-ductive player we have back,” said Serbay.

Replacing all-district quarterback Jeff Scott will be junior Delano Green.

Green “is not like Jeff,” said Serbay. “He can’t drop back and pass. We’re going to have to roll out and spin out. He’s got great ball con-trol on short distances so we’ll be making the short passes. We’re not a big play team like last year.”

The Yellow Jackets fell over just one stumbling block last year, but that was a big one. James Monroe came into the Region A, Division 2 final with an unbeaten 11-0 mark then lost its first game and the championship to Northern Neck rival Essex. Making a title run again this season may be tough. Coach Richard Serbay graduated 17 starters from that successful squad, including rusher Robert Durante, the district’s co-offensive player of the year, and linebacker Curtis Krauth, the district’s defensive player of the year. He graduated 10 starters from his offense. Serbay and the Jackets came into the district two years ago after an 0-10 campaign in the Battlefield District but quickly estab-lished themselves as a heavyweight in the Northern Neck. Although Serbay will have some big shoes to fill, he may just be able to do it, pulling talent from an unbeaten JV team. Most area coaches still list James Monroe as one of the two teams to beat again this season.
