Pleasanton Art LeaguePAL President’s Message:

You’ve Got to Bumble Forward into the Unknown --Frank Gehry, Architect First of all, I want to thank George Garbarino who has stepped in as acting VP for PAL for the remainder of the year. John West has moved to Austin, Texas. We will miss John’s insightful input over the past two years, and wish him many rewards in his new life.

Through thanking others, you’ll learn what’s been happening this summer: Linda Garbarino, PatSmith and Ritu Ahluwalia continue to work on the plans for our October Chamber of Commerce Mixer; Pat Smith continues to work on our Firehouse Member’s Show and Reception for our artists; John Trimingham is working with Stanford Medical Center in what could be the expansion of our Circuit; Linda & George Garbarino are working on our September workshop; Judy Rice has been working on the Robert Livermore Community Center shows; and Beth Okurowski & Rekha Joshi have worked with Dave Wright of PCAC in setting up the YMCA summer art program in Pleasanton schools, and many of our artists who have volunteered in the classroom.

We have the behind the scenes workers as well: Norma Webb, Diane and Stephen Rodriguez, Rahul Prasad, Nancy Meyer, Lynda Briggs, Diana Hostetter, Melinda Lentz, Gene Gracey, and Alka Vaidya.

If you’d like to join the PAL team next year, we have three openings at this time: First, the General Meeting Chair. This person finds an artist for our bi-monthly Monday evening demonstrations and makes arrangements with them. Secondly, we need a chair for our Artist Flea Market in April. This person contacts the City of Pleasanton to arrange the date, contacts artists who wish to participate, and oversees the activities of the day. Thirdly, we have the Hospitality Chair open, and the main responsibility is overseeing refreshments for our two annual art shows.

So, come bumble with me into the unknown and help keep PAL the great organization that it is!

Lisa

New PAL Members: Welcome to Debby Koonce, Lynn Hall, Loreta Landucci and Katerina Salsman.

From Dave Wright, Co-President of Pleasanton Cultural Arts Council:Dear PAL and LAA members,As many of you know from “Constant Contact,” the Pleasanton Cultural Arts Council partnered with the Tri-Valley YMCA to create the first art program as part of the Y-Summer Camp and Y-Child Care programs. The all-day programs were held at Lydiksen, Fairlands, and Mohr Primary schools, and at the St Elizabeth gymnasium-- and included hundreds of children over the summer months.

As Co-President of PCAC, I wish to thank all the artist-volunteers who enthusiastically attended and supported the classes which included three projects: a collage, some of which were overpainted; a clay project, many of which were on boards in bas relief form; and a soluble pastel project which allowed the visual art pieces to become like watercolors as water was painted onto them.

I was pleased that a number of artist-volunteers called me to assist after Lisa Rigge sent out the “Constant Contact” request for help. Also, when I called potential volunteers on the list, many offered graciously to give their time and energy to support this project. Quite a few volunteered multiple times.

As you probably know, many of the kids in the Y-program, who ranged in age from K-5th and from K-8th grade come from homes with low income, many had not had any art instruction before, and all benefited from having professional artists in the classrooms to help them pursue the three projects. I heard nothing but good things about how well behaved the kids were and about how much support they received from PAL, LAA, and PCAC Artists.

Thank you so much for partnering with us to make our partnership with the Y-Summer Arts Program successful. We could not have done it without your artist-volunteers. I especially want to thank Beth Okurowski, Rekha Joshi, and Beverly Turner who presented training sessions to the Y staff members.

The summer art program was designed to culminate in the “Youth Arts Fair Showcase” on August 12 from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the Gymnasium at St Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church, on the corner of Stoneridge and Rheem, one block east of Santa Rita Road, Pleasanton. Best, regards, Dave Wright

Livermore Art Association NewsLAA Awards for Young Artists at the Fair: On June 30, Walter Davies as representative of LAA, presented awards in the Awards Ceremony at the Alameda County Fair. Checks for $50 were given to 12 young artists in three age groups. The competition was judged by a visiting artist and the quality of the winning work was very high. Numerous young artists and members of their family came up after the ceremony to express their thanks and appreciation for their award and the support for young artists. When attending the Fair next year, take time to view the Young Artists Exhibit before seeing and experiencing the Fair’s major Art Show.

LAA Election for Officers will be held at the September Potluck & Social. If anyone is interested in being on the board, please call Caryne, current Vice President, or Kathy Hill who is the nominating chairperson. Her phone number is 925 373-0860 or email [email protected].

New LAA Members: Joyce Verdon, Patsy Rambo and Nate MacLean.

New Members of the LAA Gallery: Jim and Peggy Kervin.

Jim fuses glass by cutting pieces, patchworking them into a mold, then fuses them in a kiln. Afterward, he slumps the piece into a bowl shape in a different type of mold. Lastly he cold works the edges and bottom with diamond tools. Jim has worked in various forms of glass for the last 25 years. He has written a number of books on flameworking and fusing of glass.

Peggy makes unique glass beads. She melts the glass in a torch and freehand shapes it into beads. Peggy just started lampworking 4 years ago. Peggy and Jim are both active members of International Society of Glass Beadmakers (ISGB) and are excited to show their work at the Gallery.

Remember New Sunday Hours: 10:00 TO 2:30 amduring the Sunday Farmers Market at Carnegie Park.

Lynda Briggs has been the Guest Artist at LAA Gallery for the Summer. You can still catch her display until August 31.

The LAA Gallery has Openings for two 2-D artists, one 3-D artist and one jewelry artist. This is an excellent opportunity to introduce your work for the busy holiday season and also partake in the annual LAA Gallery Holiday Boutique. For more information, send email to Caryne Mount at [email protected] or visit www.livermoreartassociation.org.

LAA Gallery’s Artist of the Month: Kathleen Hill will be the Guest Artist for September and October. Born in Illinois, Kathleen Hill’s first love, like so many young girls, was horses. Drawing them was her way of expressing that love. Her father’s work transferred the family to California and to one of the most horse populated counties in the state. She began working for a horse trainer and the love affair continued. It was at the barn that she learned about bone and muscle structure as well as the personalities of the horses. Her subject matter grew to include anything with fur or feathers. Whether she is doing a commission or a wildlife piece, she considers it her mission to capture the life essence of every animal she paints. Drop by the Gallery to see Kathy’s beautiful oils and colored pencil animals and birds. www.kathleenhillart.com.

2D Artist of the Month: Judy Rice. Judy has a Commercial Art degree and studied Mass Communications at Cal State, Hayward. She has taken numerous college painting classes, and workshops with Lian Quan Zhen, Karen Frey, Carol Maddox, Oneida Stowe, and Peg Humphreys at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico. Some of her watercolor and acrylic paintings are in private collections in Redding, CA and Bremerton, WA. Judy also is an author and illustrator. Projects include writing and illustrating three books for children: Randi’s Pesky Picnic (about insects from A to Z) and Angel the Beddy-bye Cat (both rhyming ABC stories), and The Counting Fair, a rhyming counting story. Another project involved illustrating a book called Nature’s Wonders, Poems for Young People, written by Alan Kasparian.

3D Artist of the Month: Susan Principe. “I enjoy being a part of the local art scene and have met so many wonderful people, artists and patrons, through events hosted by organizations within our Tri Valley area. My chosen medium for personal expression is art glass--specifically fusible art glass, aka Warm Glass or Kiln Formed Glass. Creating decorative or artistic pieces utilizing warm glass involves a multi-step process ~ the first step being a vision of the finished piece, followed by much trial and error, hopefully achieving a variant of the original vision. Some of my favorite pieces have been the result of experiments gone bad (or good, depending on the perspective). In each of my projects, however, I strive to find a pleasing combination of design and color, perhaps with a bit of practicality thrown in for good measure.” Susan will have extra work in the Gallery through the end of September.

Peggy Magovern, PAL Nancy Thompson Memorial Wall, upstairs, until September 1.

Sally Haig has paintings in the halls downstairs at the Firehouse in Pleasanton until September 3. Sally’s Artist’s Statement: “My current series are faux historical portraits. Faux in the sense that my facts are not fact checked, only by me and the daftness of the internet. I am not intent on being a forger, and making an exact replication of a Bronzino portrait. However such portraits make for a great jumping off point and inspiration to create

my own interpretation. I was first interested in the miniature paintings done of women for royal marriages which were political alliances and not love matches. From there I became interested in various women who were married off for better or worse and how their lives turned out. Also men, their position in life, education and personal story. Given my love of reading and history I also like to write on the canvas, facts or quotes about my subject matter as part of the painting.”
