Saturday Briefing Page September 10, 2011 A MESSAGE FROM RICHARD R. KELLEY TO OUR OUTRIGGER ‘OHANA oughts on Two Tragedies: 2/7 and 9/ By Dr. Richard Kelley Tomorrow, September 11, 2011, our nation and many around the world will pause to remember, honor and pray for the souls of nearly 3,000 innocent people who lost their lives exactly 10 years ago, when al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial aircraft, full of passengers and crew, and crashed them into the WorldTrade Center’s Twin Towers in New York City; the Pentagon, across the river from Washington, D.C.; and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. I will join in prayer for the 9/11 victims, but I will also be praying for the souls of the 2,350 service personnel and civilians killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. I have lived long enough to have both events deeply etched in my memory in a very personal way. As I have described before in Saturday Briefing, as a boy, I watched the bombs fall on Pearl Harbor with my family from the third floor patio of our home at 2270 Kuhio Avenue in Waikīkī. Earlier that morning, my sisters and I had been delivered to Sunday School while back home, my parents, Roy and Estelle Kelley, were about to enjoy a breakfast of my mother’s famous waffles with Captain John Schultz, USN, and his wife Martha. Capt. Schultz was wearing his dress white uniform and, when the explosions erupted at Pearl Harbor, he rushed to his ship anchored there and into harm’s way without stopping to change his uniform. At the same time, my father rushed back to bring us kids home from Sunday School. e story I have not told publicly is that I was scheduled to be staying in the Marriott Hotel Continued on page 10 Martha DeLisa, Shannon Nolder, Dr. Richard Kelley, Lori Naone, Kathy Sylvester and Marion Beverly Beachfront Hotel Presentations and Some Interesting History About ese Hotels By Bill Peters Lori Naone, Sales Manager for the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach and Outrigger Reef on the Beach hotels, visited Denver two weeks ago and, in two sessions, updated the Denver ‘ohana with the latest information on these two properties. After her presentations, Lori answered questions about such things as the restaurants on the properties, hotel amenities and Waikīkī itself, including questions about the current street beautification project, which may cause traffic delays coming from the airport. Dr. Kelley made a surprise visit to the office and stayed for Lori’s first presentation. When she finished the question-and-answer session, Dr. Kelley asked if he could share some stories about the Waikīkī beachfront properties with the staff. Dr. Kelley spoke about the Edgewater Beach Apartments, which were located on the land where the Outrigger Reef now stands. He related how the huge, 14-inch coastal artillery next door at Fort DeRussy was test-fired a day or so after the December 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. e concussion Continued on page 9

Keoni had a great job and had been with the same company for over 20 years. One

day he got really sick and was hospitalized. His diagnosis took months and included

three surgeries. He was out of work for over a year, and during that time, his company

downsized and closed his office. He had a wife and two young children to care for.

Eventually they weren’t able to meet their obligations and found themselves living

in their car on the streets...

With more than half of us needing blood during our lives, maintaining a safe and adequate community blood supply is important to everyone. By donating blood, you’ll help ensure that it is available for all who need it, and you’ll help save up to three lives.

Everyday in Hawaii, hundreds of patients count on volunteer blood donors for their very survival. The donation process is safe and usually takes about an hour. There is some paperwork, a

confidential interview, and a mini physical, but the actual collection of blood takes only five to eight minutes.

Your help is needed now! Two hundred pints of blood are needed every day to help maintain safe blood levels. That’s 58,000-60,000 pints a year.

This is the fourteenth of the series of articles focusing on the 21 Asia-Pacific economies that will be represented at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Honolulu during November 2011.

BackgroundPapua New Guinea is a country in Oceania, occupying the eastern half of the island

of New Guinea and numerous offshore islands. It is located in the southwestern

Pacific Ocean, in a region defined since the early 19th century as Melanesia. Papua

New Guinea is one of the most culturally diverse countries on Earth, with over 850

indigenous languages and at least as many traditional societies, out of a population

of just under seven million. It is also one of the most rural, as only 18% of its people

live in urban centres. The country is one of the world’s least explored, culturally and

geographically, and many undiscovered species of plants and animals are thought

to exist in the interior of Papua New Guinea,

Customs, Culture & Etiquette• Kai bars (fast-food stands) are popular

• Food taboos vary and are often temporary, as with restrictions on pregnant

women and initiates. Others are totemic, involving plants or animals that are

symbolic of kin groups. Still others are relational; for example, a son-in-law may

not consume food in the presence of his mother-in-law

• Papua New Guinea is renowned for ceremonial occasions at which hundreds of

pigs or other valuables are distributed to guests

• Competitive feasting (“fighting with food”) between big men and chiefs features

oratory, dancing, singing, drumming, and feasting that go on for days, along with

the payment of bride-prices and other exchanges

• There is no legal drinking age

• Villagers produce most of their own food, and many townspeople plant gardens

and rely on open-air markets for fruits and vegetables sold by village women

• Most land is vested in kin groups and allocated according to need

• Individual land ownership is not common

• While land normally passes from father or mother’s brother to children or nieces

and nephews, the intended recipients provide much assistance and gifts to the

“owners” before the land passes to their care

• There are both village and national court systems. Village courts use custom

rather than English law, a situation that sometimes results in injustice from the

point of view of the larger society

• Sometimes people will greet you, take your hand in a hand shake and hold it

against their chest. This is a sign of friendship and respect

• Most people do not keep time and work according to the sun. They get up in the

morning when it starts to get light, lunch at noon, visit when it’s dark and sleep at

about 8PM.

• Usually nothing happens on time due to the fact that most people do not keep

time. In general people are not offended if you are late, and you will need to be

aware of the fact that people will come late or arrive early for appointments

• Services like buses do not run on time, there is no time schedule. In general planes

arrive on time but often they are late as well and sometimes will not arrive

• People will usually offer their time freely; they love to serve and help and do not

covet their time. This is a major sign of friendship and coveting your time will be a

sure sign that you are not a friend

Papua New Guinea Facts & Fun

• Officially the Independent State of Papua New Guinea

• Capital: Port Moresby• Queen: Elizabeth II• Population: 6,732,000 (2009 est)• Language: Melanesian Pidgin serves as

the lingua franca, English spoken by 1%-2%, Motu spoken in Papua region, plus 820 indigenous languages spoken

• Currency: Papua New Guinean kina (PGK) • Languages: English, Tok Pisin, Hiri Motu• Many live in extreme poverty, with about

one third of the population living on less than US$1.25 per day

• There are hundreds of ethnic groups indigenous to Papua New Guinea, the majority being from the group known as Papuans, whose ancestors arrived in the New Guinea region tens of thousands of years ago. Many remote Papuan tribes still have only marginal contact with the outside world

• Rugby league is by far the most popular sport and has been described as a replacement for tribal warfare as a way of explaining the local enthusiasm for the game (a matter of life and death)

• A large proportion of the population is illiterate. Particularly women are affected. Much of the education in the country is provided by church institutions
