Lap It Up!Greetings!

December 5th is International Volunteer Day! Do you know of a volunteer who contributes to animal rescue that deserves recognition? There are hundreds right here in Alberta who work tirelessly every-day, entirely for the well being of pets that others have let down. Although rewarding

in many ways, it is also heart wrenching for those who have to bare witness to the neglect and suffering that others so carelessly, and often intentionally, inflict. Often it is a thankless job.... We want to hear from you! Tell us about a volunteer who supports animal rescue...it does not matter how much time or money people give or raise, we just want to know how others are contributing and why you think they deserve a paw on the back! Send submissions before November 5th by mail (address on Page 3) or email to [email protected]. A few lucky volunteers will be chosen to win some great prizes and named in our December issue.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank those rescue groups who have expressed their gratitude to the Pet Rescue Team. We are very proud to be involved in animal rescue and so pleased to know our magazine is helping to spread the word about all of the wonder-ful organizations in Alberta who rescue pets!

Tail of the MonthRachel Sentes Book Review

Skippyjon Jones in the Dog House is the second book in the series starring the crazy Mexican kitty with gigantic ears and a wild imagination. The first adventure won several awards for best read-aloud book and this follow-up is simi-lar in its language and readability. Skippyjon Jones is a little Siamese cat who dreams of being El Skippito – the famous Zorro-esque Chihuahua. In this story Skippyjon Jones gets into trouble after colour-ing on the walls in his living room and is put on a time out, in the doghouse so-to-speak. His mother gives him instruc-tions to start thinking more like the cat he is, and not like the dog, he wants to be. However, left to his own devices, Skippyjon Jones’ imagination takes over and he is soon transforming himself into the Spanish hero, El Skippito. With exciting words like “bobble-ito, birdito, and poco perrito” rolling off your tongue, one cannot help but laugh with every turn of the page. The colourful illustrations and crazy font selection on every page compliment the energetic storyline As a bonus, this book comes with a lovely audio cd of the author Judy Schachner reading both this book and her first book Skip-pyjon Jones. This book is an excellent choice for children who are both cat and dog lovers. They will no doubt enjoy bouncing and clapping around their rooms singing “ Wag your loco tail, back and forth, To the chimichanga rumba and the cha-cha-cha!”

Howdy! I am a Ball Python but we are not sure just how old I am (and you can’t really expect me to volunteer it can you?). I came from local Animal Control and eat thawed frozen food really well. I seem fine to handle so far and except for some light scarring on my back I am in good shape physically.

I am a Boa Constrictor and I was surrendered by my owner because I went on a hunger strike for 6 months. I am healthy but under-weight. So far I am eating live food but ERAS would like to see me feeding thawed before I go to a new home.

My name is Dante and I am a baby Iguana. I was surrendered by my owner because they feared I might be aggressive…but I am sure I’ll be fine. I am just afraid and need someone to work with and handle me. I have a healthy appetite and listen intently when people speak to me…what a cutie I am!

Who Let the Dogs on School Grounds? When walking to schools this year, resist the temptation to take your dog along. The signifi cant number of children, fl urry of activity and high levels of noise can easily stress dogs, causing them to react aggressively. Because of these safety concerns, keep dogs on-leash and stay within school boundaries, such as on side-walks and trails.

Dogs are not permitted in picnic sites; parks with posted signs; park buildings; playgrounds; sports fi elds or golf courses. Rather than using a sports fi eld or school ground, exercise your dog at any one of our 40 off-leash parks in and around Edmonton. You can also walk your dog on any trail more than 0.5 metres wide; on parkland; city boulevards or any area marked on-leash. If not, you could face a fi ne of $100 for failure to control or leash a dog and an additional $100 fi ne for improper park use. Animal Control Offi cers routinely patrol various parks, school grounds and other public areas, so be sure to stay within boundaries.

This fall, take advantage of our trails and parklands when walking your dog, but reserve the school grounds for children.

Happy Birthday Mom & Roy!

Love Sylvia and Wendel

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS)

(780) 466-7227 ~ www.scarscare.org

My name is Carlos and life is good...but, it will be even better when I have my own home.

One that feeds me, brushes me, walks me, cuddles me, and all that other fun stuff. Not really sure on my breed but I sure love my quad rides! I was very shy when I first ar-rived but I’m doing way better now and listen so well. I am wonderful on and off leash, crate trained and I live to play! I’m going to make someone very happy one day, hopefully sooner then later.

My name is Whispurr and I came to SCARS at ap-proximately 2 weeks of age. I was totally dependant on my mother, weighing less

than 150 grams and my eyes were still closed. Neighbourhood children took me away from my feral mother, when they tried to put me back my mom would not accept me. I have a sad past and an uncertain future. My foster parents have been bottle feeding me and ensuring I go to the bathroom every 3 hours, keeping me extra warm and watching my weight carefully to alert them to problems. We are all hoping for the best. It is situations like this that remind us of how imperative it is that parents teach their children to respect animals, leave them alone, and alert adults to any situation where assistance is needed...for their safety as well as mine.

Yep, another pound boy, that’s me! My name is Cobbs and I am so thankful...my foster mom had a very tough time look-ing at us all and not being able to take everyone. I am crate trained, ignore other dogs and I’m great off leash. I am such a nice boy; My foster mom can not say enough good things about me.

Now, let’s get this out of the way right away...because I know those pictures can be deceiv-

ing. I am a large dog!!! My name is Calvin and so far I am a very nice guy. I am still pretty new so check back on the SCARS website for more information.

Snoot…can you say a ball of cute all wrapped up in a coat of fluffy? Well that’s me! I am great with kids, cats, and other dogs? I love to follow you

everywhere, adore riding in vehicles and I’m almost housetrained. I am pretty darn cute don’t you think? Please phone PARS if I’m your guy (780) 536-3868.

When my foster mom first saw me at the pound I looked so sad, but I had to stay my allotted time. I hoped she would come back and she did. My name is Cliff. I was so afraid but when she brought me home and we walked around checking things out it seemed pretty safe. I am a large Lab X and seem to be fairly young. I am

crate trained, like other dogs and I’m just an all around great boy!

My name is Liberty and I am brand new to SCARS. Tank, Fusion, Ranger, Beamer and Pilot are my pups. Our story is sad. I didn’t have anyone to care

for me or feed me while I was pregnant. On a cold concrete floor I gave birth to 11 beautiful angels. I did my best, but my poor puppies did not get enough nutri-tion and six of my angels had to spread their wings as they just were not strong enough to survive. Now I am focusing on my remaining five babies. Everyone says I am a fantastic, loving and very attentive mom. I will not be available for adoption until my babies no longer need me but SCARS is still asking for applications so my new home will be ready when I am! I am a 1-2yr old Collie X and I don’t think I have a mean bone in my whole body. I’m pretty skinny right now, but at optimum health, I would probably be around 70lbs.

I am one of Liberty’s babies, my name says a lot about me as I am the biggest in our crew. They call me Tank! I am really sweet and will steal your heart in a moment! We were born August 2.

My foster mom just loves my little face…I wish my eyes were open so that I could see what she is talking about! My name is Beamer and we will all be ready for adoption mid Septem-ber.

They named me Fusion. I am really sweet and love to be held…in fact when you put me down I ‘coo’ like a pigeon to be picked back up! When I grow up I want to be just like my mom.

I love to stay close to my sister Pilot because she is really warm and squishy! ...oh and she also needs a big brother to care for her! My name is Ranger and I need a home.

I’m Pilot...the teeny, tiny one. My foster mom and her friends took turns feeding me with a syringe for 6 days, but now I’m big enough to feed on my own.

I’m a beautiful, brown tabby polydactyl female. I’m 4yrs old, and as sweet as they come. I used to get teased in grade school about my big feet, but when I met other top fashion model kitties and realized they were equally endowed, I now wear my size 11’s with pride. Oh did I mention I have beauty and brains?

I’m Butterscotch, a 1yr old pound rescue. I’m anxiously awaiting a home to call my own. I’m grateful and all for the food and shelter,

but, being a big boy, I need room to stretch my legs! Come and meet me today to see if I’m your man!

I’m called Midnight and I am 2yrs old. I was found wander-ing the streets and I’m sure appreci-ating the regular food and safe place to lay my head at night. I would

however appreciate a family to call my own even more!

I was found on the streets trying to provide for my two kittens. I’m about 1.5yrs old and they say I’m a beautiful kitty. I would love to go to a home that is

quiet (no small children or dogs please) so that I can realize my full potential. am learning to trust people again and have come a long way, so a home full of love would be right up my alley.

I’m a black male who is one of two cats left behind in a motel, not unlike a pair of old un-wanted socks. I’m about 3yrs of age and thankfully not suffering from any abandonment issues. I’m happy to have three square meals a day and a safe place to lay my head. My foster mom says I’m affectionate, independent in nature, ok with other cats, playful and oh yeah, I love to chase balls.

Jake’s my name and I’m sweet as pie! I am 2yrs old and from the pound. I have a little nick on my nose from being on the streets trying to fend for myself, but

I subscribe to the philosophy that whatever doesn’t kill you just makes you stronger. I’m one tough cookie (but still soft and squishy on the inside!).

They call me Momma, now that my kittens have found homes I’m waiting for one of my own. I came from the pound and thanks to SNAP my child rearing days are behind me. I’m laid back, easy going and very loving.

My name is Mona and I was recently returned to SNAP through no fault of my own. I’m a 1yr old sweetheart with the silkiest coat ever. I’m affectionate, but a little frightened with my new surroundings; I’m not sure what to make of all the other cats here. I’m starting to settle in quite nicely though and I’m looking forward to meeting you.

Chicklet’s my name! I am 4yrs old and I was surrendered by my owner. I am a quiet, gentle, little girl and I would like a home where I am the only animal. I just can’t get enough human attention and cuddles!

They call us Jacob and Champ. We are 9 month old Poodle X puppies looking for a place to call home. Our owner could

no longer care for us and surrendered us to SNAP. We’re friendly, outgoing, very active, and currently working hard on our house training…we need some gentle guidance to help refine our skills. As we are very bonded, we would like to be adopted together. If you have room in your heart for us, please call SNAP for more information.

My name is Oreo. I am 4yrs old, sweet, affectionate in nature and I love to play. I was rescued from the pound…it’s hard to believe I was unwanted, as I’m the

sweetest thing ever. I crave human attention and get along fine with other cats. Please come and meet me today.

My name is Midas and I am a very sweet 14lb boy. I have a great temperament and I love to give kisses, cuddle, go for walks and runrunrun! I am housetrained, eager to please, super friendly with people and don’t mind sleeping in my kennel. Everyone says I am an all around GREAT dog and that they just don’t make them like me very often.

(780) 707-5753 www.sharesrescue.com

Hey there! My name is Tux and I came from the pound. I rubbed my poor little nose raw trying to get attention at the pound....and it worked because now I am at SHARES and destined to find a wonderful home. I seem to be fine with other cats but fairly cautious still about the dogs. I am litter trained and they tell me I am around 3 yrs old.

Paws And Claws Animal RescueFoundation

My name is Dudley and I am going to be a big boy! I am energetic, affectionate and came in with my sister Cadence (on the right). She was way smaller at first but I always played gently with her. When we are off leash we don’t like to venture too far from people...got to make sure we don’t miss out on any attention!

My name is Camper and I am a 4 month old Lab X. I am super-laidback, love the water and I’m good with other dogs –I even did well with the cats! My buddy Eastwood here is a 9 month old Shep/Shiba Inu X. He is pretty outgoing and marvellous with other dogs, people, and cats. We hope to find new homes soon!

Everyone around here calls me Hicks. I am a confident and outgoing little mancat. I get along great with other cats and do well with the resident dog here. I love to cuddle with my surrogate momma, Alexis, who is also up for adoption.

Our names are Laverne and Shirley. We were pretty hard to catch but a kind volun-teer sat for an hour and a half until we were comfortable enough to be contained. We are 8 weeks old and they think we are Shep/Lab crosses. We are working hard on being socialized...Shirley even let our foster mom rub her belly today!

My name is Popcorn and I was born around March 1st. Obviously I am adorable, but I also play beautifully with other dogs and I’m good with cats...anddid you check outmy ears?

I was named Winston when I came to Paws and Claws and I am around 5 months old. I am very cute, often clumsy, goofy, affectionate and I adore having a fuss made over me! I am also good natured with other dogs, self-confident and playful…however I do snore!

My name is Robyn and I am 4-5 weeks old. I was wandering around a yard of much older pups…the kids there had just brought me home. I lost my mom too young but luckily the other pups were nice to me. We are not sure what breeds I might be…maybe a Shep/Collie X? I am terribly smart and can already jump from the couch to the floor, even though I am so very tiny! I follow my people around everywhere and don’t seem to bark much.

www.pawsandclawsanimalrescue.ca

They named me Ranger. I am extremely affectionate, sweet natured, very smart and aim to please! I am quite active and would benefit in a home where I had a friend to play with. I am a typical 5 month old puppy working hard to become a good dog!

to care for him in the way that they had first hoped. A Golden Retriever, he was lovely, but had some behav-ioural issues that would require time and patience from both ends. After a 24-hour test run in her home, which was a tad frantic, Seanna and her husband decided to take on the 6-month-old puppy and named him Tacoma. Now after months of hard work, Tacoma is a boisterous, loving dog that doesn’t bite when he’s hugged, loves being loved, and isn’t as dominant towards humans and other dogs as he used to be.

“I respect and admire the decision that was made to give him up. It takes a strong person to admit that it’s not working. I was thrilled that I was chosen to give him a home. I wish there were more people who would reach out for help when faced with the same situation, rather than dumping a dog in a ditch, or leaving them behind in an apartment when they move,” says Collins.

There is always an unknown quantity at play when rescuing a dog, and potential owners need to be educated about how much work and time they might have to devote to their new family member. That’s where Second Chance Animal Rescue Society comes in. With their comprehensive foster parent program, and

ceaseless energy for rescuing needy dogs, they are a group of volunteers that inspire anyone who meets them.

As Seanna explains, “SCARS is a completely volunteer-run organization and I’m inspired by what they have been through as individuals. Everyone is amazing and they all have huge hearts. I want people to be more aware and educated about what they can do to help these animals. If they can’t help financially, then maybe they can help with their time by becoming a foster parent, or spreading the word about the society. Their greatest gift of course would be to adopt a dog and give them a second chance for a good life.”

All the volunteers at the Second Chance Animal Rescue Society have inspiring stories of heartache and hope to share, and without support from the public many dogs would be destined to live out brief and sad lives. The Canines & Cocktails event (www.scarscare.org) is Edmonton’s chance to support a society that is in integral part of the community and gives dogs a second chance at life.

One of her passions is animal rescue. Seanna has become a supporter of responsible companion animal guardianship. It is no surprise that she volunteered to MC at the 3rd annual Canines & Cocktails fundraiser for the Second Chance Animal Rescue Society on September 19th. This is the second year she has volunteered to host the event, and this year she has her own success story to share. The McDonald Family Animal Rescue

www.themcdonaldrescue.com ~ (780) 633-7117

Hi! They call me Georgia and I tell you, I’m lucky to be alive! A compas-sionate animal lover

noticed me as a stray and came to my rescue. She paid a lot of money for two hernia surgeries and now I’m right as rain and happy to be in a warm and safe place with lots of love. I am 5yrs old and just love you humans. I’m even okay with cats that are calm and respectful of my space…but if you have a pet bird I will probably chase it!

I’m Sterling, Decker’s brother. I let him do all the scary stuff, even at 11 weeks old I know it’s bet-ter to sit back and watch

him to make sure it’s safe before I venture into things. I am very gentle and love dogs.

Hi, I’m Venus. I’m an adventur-ous little girl of 11 weeks and I just love to explore the world! My foster family

plays gently with us and we are all taught to use a scratching post. I have all my shots, just like my siblings and I would love to be adopted with one of them…plus there is an excellent deal for adopting 2 of us!

My name is Mitri and I am a beauti-ful, male, Lesser Sulpher Cocka-too. I am 16yrs old,

like to dance, and really love “scritches” from my foster parents. I even use wooden toys to scratch places where I can’t reach…I’m so clever! I need to live with someone who knows how loud I can be, how needy I am, and how long I will live. If you understand, and will still love me with all of your heart, then I will be your very best little buddy!

Pluto here…I’m the tiniest of the bunch! I love to eat, sleep and play. I am healthy, happy and love chasing the dog’s tails.

We are desperate for a family who will show us the love and respect we didn’t get when our previous owners dumped us.

My name is Sam and I am a Mitred Conure around 14yrs old. I need a loving home that doesn’t

care that I may never have my feather’s back. I came from the same home as Mitri. I am enjoy-ing all the attention I get and I love to try new foods. I am very curious, pretty confident, and believe I am ready to move on to a family that will commit to many years of noise and mess in exchange for all the love and fun they can handle!

Hi, I’m Maya. I was trapped just in time to have my babies. It was assumed I was feral at first but turns out I am actually a

loving, quiet young thing, who most likely got pregnant my first heat! Once I have finished nursing my 4 fat little babes, I will need my own forever, indoor home. Everyone is impressed with how trusting and gentle I am…I know I would be with you too.

Hey there! I’m Decker, I’m the head honcho of a family of kittens aban-doned in a box. I am about 11 weeks old, and the largest

and most confident of all of my siblings. My foster family gives us so much attention and handles us with such respect –we can’t wait to see what our very own homes will be like!

Yipeeee…another bra and another successful heist! I’m “Miss Cleopatra”, also known as Cleo, aka Boo. I’m a sprightly little girl, full of personal-ity and charm. I love other ferrets and some small dogs. Currently I’m teaching my new mate, Cookie, to pull ladies underwear out of the laun-dry basket and stash them under the bed…oh the fun I have!!! I’m a ten month old lovely sable, and dedicated panti-raider! Watch out…

Me and my shadow - Strolling down the avenue - Me and my shadow - Not a soul to tell our troubles too… (with apologies to Billy Rose & Al Jolson). Really, sometimes we have trouble remember-ing who is who…we’re like a matched set only Kaley has red eyes and I have black eyes … or is it the other way around? According to our foster mom,

my sister Kaley has the most beautiful big black eyes! My name is Crazy (what an inaccurate name!) and I am a true albino with red eyes. We are 5yrs old, very small, very gentle and very sweet. We’re also ready to play, sing and frolic right into your heart.

Are you ready for a ferret family or maybe a circus troupe? Either way, we’re full of the joy of life that will keep you laughing for hours…we love to wrestle, tumble and chase each other around. Seriously, though…yeah right…we don’t do serious!!! However, we are gentle, loving and ready for you! Thea is the baby, she’s just over 1yr and an adorable sable girl. Toby is the middle, he’s a 1.5yr old chocolate mitt boy. And my name is Lily! I am just under 2yrs old but still the oldest (also the one with the prettiest sable fur). Hey you! Looking for “big and handsome”? Well here I am! Bubba’s the name and loving people is my game! I am gentle, laid back, affectionate, get

along with other dogs and I’m only around 1yr old -can’t you just picture me snoozing on your porch or deck? I came from the pound and they tell me I am up for adoption. I guess that means I’m waiting for somebody out there to notice and come meet me…so we can fall in love and they can take me home to live hap-pily ever after. A big friendly hound that’s me!

My name is Socks and although large I’m really calm and easy going. I’m 14 months old, weigh about 70 lbs and told I’m a Lab/Great Pyrenees X. I am good with children, dogs, cats and horses. I’m leash trained and know my

basic commands –I know them even quicker if you have a treat! I need daily exercise, but I’m not hyper and I am well behaved in the house. I settle down quickly, listen well and have not done any damage when left unat-tended…which is great news because I am not used to being crated.

Hello there, my name is Spike! I’m a 2yr old gentleman who loves lots of affection. Though I am timid of new situations at first, I am extremely friendly

once I get to know and trust you. I get along well with other cats and I know I will be a great forever pet!

Hey Jonah here. I’m a 2yr old German Shepherd X. I weigh about 55 lbs and I’m a little shy so I would like a quiet home with children over 10 years. I am housetrained which is good because I don’t like going in a crate. I need a family who will be kind but consistent so I know what is expected of me. I was a stray and all I would really like is love and security.

Hi there, I’m Sassy! I’m an outgoing, friendly, and active Border Collie X. I am full of mischief and very smart so I’ll be keeping you on your toes as you train me into the kind of well behaved dog I know I can be. I will

need a home where I will get all the exercise and mental stimulation needed to keep me out of trouble!

I’m Gabby, a really cute and affectionate little gal looking for a home of my own. I will roll on the ground until you pet my tummy. I am excel-lent in the company of other cats and can’t wait for some tummy scratches from you so call about me now!

Good day! I’m Red (well re-ally I am more of an orange but everyone calls me Red!) and I’m about 4.5 months old. I’m a very outgoing and brave kitten who is extremely playful and loves whichever toy you give me. I’m hoping you’ll take home!

Hi everyone Cola here. I am an 8 month old, full of life, Border Collie X. I will need an active home -maybe doing obedience, agility or working on a farm. I have spent a good part of my life tied up so I wasn’t very well socialized and sometimes I’m a little shy when I first meet people. However, once I know you I will shower you with affection and be your devoted friend. I am used to little children and I get along with both dogs and cats.

My name’s Andy (short for Andy Panda due to my markings) and I am a 2yr old bundle of funfunfun! I love to talk and have a unique and varied vocabu-lary. Though I’m timid in new places and situations, I am soon my affectionate

self asking for chin rubs. I need a quiet home that is willing to be patient and gentle with me...do you have a little extra TLC for a nice fella like me?

Hello, I’m Mini! I’m a pure white kitten and I was born on March 1, 2008. I will sleep at your feet at night and

cuddle with you on the couch during a movie. I get along wonderfully with other cats, friendly dogs, children, men and women...pretty much everyone! I love to play and I will talk to you and express all my feelings...I’m a really good little listener too!

I’m Malcolm...and I’m all about my toys! I’m a fearless kitten and would be great in a home with cats or dogs. I’m also fairly independent, love to

nap and especially like to receive lots of affection. If you are looking for an outgoing and boisterous kitten, I’m the guy for you!

Thank You to the Siebert Family for sponsoring my spot

Hi my name is Teeka and I am a 10 month old, happy, friendly, German Shep/Border Collie X. I weigh around 55 lbs, I’m house and crate trained, and very people oriented. Before NASAP nobody had ever spent any time train-ing or exercising me. Now I’m pretty good on leash

and I come when I’m called, but whoever adopts me will have to continue my training.

My name is also Lucky –let’s just call me Lucky II. I am a young, female Heeler X. I know some basic commands and I LOVE to chase a ball at the park. Who says blondes are dumb? I am as smart as they come!

My name is Stormy! I just got this name so I am not very good at coming to it yet, but I am getting there. I am an old soul, not sure how old but I am up there. I am a beautiful Akita X with a won-derful coat, but I’m still a little camera shy. My favorite thing to do is ride shot gun with my head out the window – it’s the greatest!

My name is Burma and I was found running on the Grande Cache Highway. They tell me that I am a Heeler X around 14 weeks old. I am full of puppy energy and I love to run and play at the park!

My name is Lucky and I am very well behaved. My family had a new baby with severe allergies so my two cat siblings and I ended up at the SPCA. I am a 4yr old Cocker Spaniel/Australian Shep-pard X –I am toooooo cute! I like to go to the park; I am a little picky on who I play with though. I hope my cat siblings find a new home too!

My name is Chewy –no I don’t chew but my former owner thought I looked like Chewbacca in Star Wars! I am not so sure. I am spunky and love to go for my daily exercise in the park. As for my breed only my parents know for sure so I am calling myself “All Canadian”.

My name is Toby and I am a Cocker Spaniel/Bichon Frise X. I came in all matted but with my new hair cut I look absolutely adorable and I am much cooler! I recently hurt my leg –but after a visit to my doctor and one week bed rest (boring) I will be much better. I really like women but men kind of scare me. If you can offer me a new forever home please call soon.

Working dogs, agility dogs, show dogs and regular family dogs are oftenexposed to sudden, extensive pressure, in their work or during livelyplay in the exercise yard.

Another example is putting the dog into acold car in the winter and then letting it out to run around and play. We can take a racing Greyhound as an example. When the race starts and the dog is released from the starting box in reaches a speed of 60 kilometres an hour in a few seconds. If the dog has not warmed up andthe tissues are not prepared for exertion there is considerable risk of strain and other injuries. By warming up we mean getting warm through activity and increasing the temperature in the musculature. The increase in blood flow allows the muscles to absorb nutrients more easily. The speed of nerve impulses causing muscles to contract increases and the dog is able to run faster. A sound warm up does not tire the dog but rather increases blood circulation and warms up the muscles ensuring that the joints are lubricated and more supple. The dog is then ready to perform more demanding physical exertion without running the risk of injury.

How to do it!

Warming up (regular family dogs) can involve walking with the dog on the lead for 15 - 20 minutes before allowing it to run freely. In this way the muscles soften up and are ready for physi-cal activity. Competitive and working dogs could warm up in a more goal-oriented way.

Here is a check list that could be used before the exercise:

• Let the dog walk slowly for a while and then increase the tempo for 2-3 minutes.• Let the dog trot for 2-3 minutes.• Let the dog gallop for one minute.• Then let the dog make some short explosive moves.• Let the dog wind down a little by going back to trotting and then walking.

(I also strongly recommend that you allow your dog to wind down after the exercise before any stretching activities.)

As a dog owner there is nothing we can do to prevent all accidents. However we can prevent muscle related problems and strain injuries by warming up our dogs regulary. Under these con-ditions the dog can access optimal gait and stretch to its full length. This keeps the dog well-balanced physically andpsychologically, allowing it to retain the agility of the young dog to an advanced age. Warming up exercises should be an automatic element in the healthcare, a complement to your dog’s daily exercise, obedi-ence training and diet they are suitable for all dogs regardless of breed, age or size.

Hello, I’m Frosty, and I’m the center of attention….well at least that’s the way it should be! I’m not fond of sharing my people with other cats -I’m far too important! I would love to meet you and have your undivided love and attention, I just can’t get enough!

I’m Darla, a playful happy girl who would love a family to call my own. I enjoy interacting with other cats and love batting around and chasing toys on the floor. Are you looking for a playmate?

I’m a quiet gentle soul who loves relax-

ing in the morning sun. My name is Alanna and you will likely find me lounging the day away on the back of a couch, keeping close track of all my people from the sidelines. I would love to be a part of your family.

I’m the comedian of the bunch and I love to talk! My name is Cheech and

all that I’m missing is a great sidekick! I have a lot of energy and would do great with an active family -especially with kids to play with and take me for walks.

My name is Lonna and I’m truly just happy to please. I love being around other dogs so I would make a great play-mate! I’m

extremely sweet natured and just want someone to love me forever.

Hi, Zeus here! I think I’m a Heeler/Husky X. What I know for sure is that I’m a hand-some devil who is ready to find my new family. I play well with others, and I’m up for long nights of walks, movies and cuddling. Could you be the one I am searching for?

Hi there, I’m Pepper and I’m a playful and precious little thing! My goal is to be picked up and loved. I will run and play with you for hours on end but at the end of the day, when I’m all tuckered out, I will just find a cozy quiet corner or lap and purr myself to sleep. I’m pretty irresistible!

It’s the family life for me! I’m a cute active guy named Whiskers who loves to cuddle and purr! Would you like to meet me? I can’t wait to show you all the toys I can play with…and maybe you can give me a few ear rubs and tummy tickles too!

Hi, my name is Xena and I’m a relaxed girl that loves to cuddle up in a corner, relax, sleep and take it all in. I would be great for

an older couple looking for a great companion to spoil rotten!

Hi, my name is Tango and I’m a 1yr old Husky X. Game of Frisbee anyone? How about a swim? I’m high energy

and I’m looking for a loyal family that would love to take me on some adventures. Are you in?

Wow, a month ago, if you had asked me where I’d be by the end of the summer, I never would have guessed Edmon-ton…so many changes! My name is Moon and so far I’ve been able to meet some terrific dogs—mostly Greyhounds, but also some funny looking, hairy dogs. Those were OK too, except for the little ones that were

yapping and darting around –just asking to be chased and caught…and yet people expected me not to chase them??? Everyone keeps commenting on how smart and beautiful I am. I just know that I will be a GREYt companion for some lucky family.

I’m Molly. After run-ning in 99 races and then having a litter of puppies, I’m ready to relax

in a retirement home. But don’t get me wrong I’m not ready to just lie around getting old -I’m way too spunky for that! I love a good romp and I think walks are the best! I am a happy girl who loves meeting new people and my tail never stops wagging. I also love adventure, as long as it doesn’t involve cats or other small animals I’m good to go!

Aries: March 21 - April 19School’s in and it’s time to pawty! Just think, you finally get your house, people and toys back to yourself during the day

and also get to escape the kids hyper activity while they are school. Yah I know...you miss them already!

That’s it...that’s all...summer in Alberta is gone again! The good news is that it’s time to help rake up the leaves and

spend lots of time in the yard with your family. Try to be helpful and refrain from digging in the flower beds again.

Are you’re sitting at the end of your rope? Your neighbors are the key, but only if they are willing to speak up for you.

Smile pretty and don’t jump up, your neighbor could be the only real voice in your corner when it comes to freedom.

You are more likely to be highly sensitive this month so try and prepare ahead of time to take it in stride. If you get too

riled up, ground yourself by going for a long walk or run. Remember only you can control your actions.

Time to get LOUD little Leo and let others hear you roar! Go to your people and find a way to tell them to ‘get off the

couch, put down the remote, and pick up your leash!!!’ Don’t take no for an answer –they know better!

Feeling those fall time blues already? Feed your soul with music...and don’t forget to join in! Sing it loud and sing it

proud! Canine howling is a great way to catch up and bond with your buddies...almost like people going for coffee!

Cancer: June 21 - July 22

Leo: July 23 - August 22

Virgo: August 23 - September 22

Beware of old acquaintances hanging around this month pretending they are friends. There is a reason you stopped

flying with that crowd...pay attention to your instincts and steer clear of trouble.

Take interest in your diet and get informed. Nutrition is just as important for your life span and quality as it is for your

people, so be sure they do some research to keep you healthy and strong as a horse.

You’re a mover and a shaker Capricorn, but if you’re going along for the ride make sure you have a seatbelt or kennel

to keep you safe. Your two leggers may laugh at first, but ignore their snickers and dig your paws in to hold your ground. Safety First!

For all of you smaller Aquarians, an important tip! If you desire attention and are stuck competing with other furball

siblings, be sure to concentrate on detail to entice your peoples inter-est. And if all else fails just start whining!

Taurus: April 20 - May 20

Gemini: May 21 - June 20

With the lazy days of summer behind you it’s now time to get back on regular schedule. Don’t let your family forget

you need schooling too. That way you can learn all the important stuff you need to know to be the best pet ever.

Scorpio: October 23 - November 21

Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21

Capricorn: December 22 - January 19

Aquarius: January 20 - February 18

Pisces: February 19- March 20

That’s right Libra...it’s definitely time for the dreaded bath again. Once every 6 months is just not enough. You really

need to get a handle on this...and soon. It’s no secret, and there’s certainly no way around it...bath time sucks!

Bosco… Happy, not yappy. Loyal, not large. Boy, not girl! Did I have you at Bosco? I am a 1yr old Heeler X…if you are not familiar with Heelers get familiar we are fan-tastic! I love everything, kids, dogs…okay I admit I haven’t met the cats yet,

but I am that guy that likes everyone! I follow you everywhere, hang on your every word and I am very trainable. I am a nice small pack-age that you can take anywhere.

Elvis is alive! I know cause that’s what ev-eryone calls me! I am a hunka hunka burn’n LOVE, at the young age of 7yrs. I am good with kids, cats, and dogs. I have an independent spirit and although I listen very well I make every effort to make you think I chose to do what you told me to, not that it was your choice.

Simon says get off the couch, Simon says pick up the phone, Simon says give me a bone, adopt me….just kid-ding ahhhh gotcha...Simon didn’t say (or did I?)! I am a 7 month old Heeler/

Shepherd X. I am active, loyal, smart, and protective -now that’s a dog!

My name is Daffodil and I am a 7 month old Jacky/Labby/Collie X kind of gal. I don’t have a care in the world besides “will you love me?” Other than that I am a great little girl that is high energy but polite. I listen well, stay close and I’m great with kids, cats, and dogs.

Mudd Budd…that’s me! Chewie from Star Wars has got nothing on these handsome locks of fuzzy cuteness. I am just 32lbs, quite active, fun loving, and I’m great with kids, cats, and dogs. Oh yah…I am also all about the love, I just can’t get enough. I will be total puddy in your loving arms!

Humane Animal Rescue Team (hart)Everyone calls me Bailey. I am between 1.5-2yrs of age which means that I am already full grown…and I still fit perfectly into the average sized lap! I am very adaptable to new situations and a

simple hug can get me through anything. I get along very well with dogs/cats and especially love children. I am great on and off leash, and don’t mind spending time in my crate. See what I mean, I am pretty near perfect!

Having made the best decision of my life, I waited by a nice lady’s van until she returned to rescue me and my best buddy Cadet. Cadet found his for-ever home and now I can’t wait to find mine. My name is

Cooper. I am full grown and weigh about 40 pounds which I think is the perfect size because I can run and play, but I am still small enough to curl up with you. I love children and other dogs so I think I would be a great addition to just about any family.

My name is Kobe and I am a 2yr old, purebred Bichon Frise that lived with a wonderful family until they were transferred overseas. I love playing with all sizes of dogs, know my basic commands and will show off my dance moves to get treats. I stand on my hind legs and wave my front paws -it gets me cookies all the time!
