PASTOR’S LETTER The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter 44: The Second Luminous Mystery—the Self-Manifestation of Jesus at the Wedding of Cana, continued…

Saint John tells us: “On the third day there was a marriage in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; Jesus also was invited to the marriage, with his disciples.

When the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine’ And Jesus said to her, ‘O woman, what have you to do with me? My hour is not yet come.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:1-5). It is an important fact that the Blessed Virgin Mary was present at this miracle, had a role in it and that Saint John—inspired by the Holy Spirit—thought it important to put in his Gospel.

For one thing, these verses illustrate Mary’s loving concern for the bride and groom. They were undergoing the embarrassing predicament of running out of wine for their guests. Mary wanted to help them out, so she urges her Divine Son to do something about it.

At the same time, her response shows her humility, gentleness, and faith. She didn’t say to Jesus, “Hey, why don’t you change the water into wine for them?” Instead, she subtly pointed out the problem and then trusted Jesus to do the right thing. The way Mary approached Jesus can teach us something about how to pray to God. All we need to do is bring our concern before him in a simple way, with an attitude of trust and abandonment. We don’t have to spell out all the details—he already knows them. And we don’t have to tell him what to do. He knows what’s best without our help. At the same time, it does us and others good to talk to God about whatever is on our heart and mind.

Mary’s response can also teach us that she isn’t only concerned with helping when we are faced with major catastrophes. There are a lot of worse things that can happen than running out of wine at a party, but Mary still wanted to help this couple. In the same way, our Blessed Mother cares about every little detail of our lives. In this, she is reflecting God’s loving concern for everything in our lives, big and small. You could say that Mary reflects the love of God like the moon reflects the light of the sun. Many people have asked Mary for her intercession and have experienced the power of her prayers when they got what they had been asking for, or something even better.

This experience of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s love and help that Christians have experienced throughout history is reflected in many prayers of popular devotion. A very ancient one, dating from the Third Century, is known as “Sub Tuum Presidium,” for its first three words in Latin. The oldest manuscript of the prayer we have is in Greek. One English translation is: “Under your mercy we take refuge, Mother of God! Do not despise our prayers in our necessities, but deliver us from danger, you who are all pure and blessed.” Another prayer that indicates the confident trust of the people of God in Mary’s loving intercession is the following prayer, often known as “The Memorare,” for its first word in Latin: “Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother; to you do I come, before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer me. Amen.”

We would do well to never consider anything too unimportant to bring to the Blessed Virgin Mary. With a mother’s deep love, she will bring our prayers—"polished up,” edited and improved, so to speak—to her Son, Jesus Christ. We can trust him, who is the fountain of the love which has filled Mary, to do what is right, just like he did for that couple in Cana.

Your fellow pilgrim through the Rosary, Father Rudolph

SAINT OF THE DAY - BLESSED ELENA OF BOLOGNA

Elena (Helen in English) Duglioli was born in Bologna, Italy in 1472. Her parents gave her a good Christian education but were not happy when she announced that she wanted to become a nun. Their will prevailed, and when she was about seventeen, Elena was married to man named Benedetto Dall’ Olio, with whom she lived happily for about thirty years. They are said to have constantly loved and supported one another and encouraged each other in the Christian life. Benedetto died before Elena, who followed him on September 23, 1520. The people of Bologna considered her a saint while she was still alive, and as soon as she left this life, devotion to her became widespread. Blessed Elena of Bologna, pray for us! The City of Crystal is seeking volunteers who want to be more involved in their community by participating on boards, commissions and task forces. These governmental bodies offer advice and support to the city and city council on a variety of issues.

The application deadline for all seats is Thursday, Oct. 31, 2019.

For more information regarding these vacancies, or to fill out an application, visit the City of Crystal website at www.crystalmn.gov and go to “Boards and Commissions” under “Government,” or contact the administrative services coordinator at 763-531-1131 or [email protected].

St. Raphael Catholic School welcomes the Healey Education Foundation

On August 29, 2019, St. Raphael’s Pastor, Fr. Michael Rudolph, and the Principal of St. Raphael Catholic School, Cheryl Aviña, signed an agreement to work with the Healey Educational Foundation. This organization partners with Catholic Pre-K to 12 schools in a number of archdioceses and dioceses around the USA, providing human, informational and financial resources to help schools develop their full potential, free of charge.

The Healey Education Foundation—along with local partners the Catholic Community Foundation and GHR Foundation, which have already given a lot of assistance to St. Raphael Catholic School—will provide funding and training for a full-time development director for the school, as well as help in the hiring process.

The Healey Educational Foundation will also help the school administration set up a "Board of Specified Jurisdiction" that will take the place of the current School Advisory Council. The responsibilities of this Board will include determining the school budget and tuition, coming up with the school strategic plan, managing enrollment, fundraising planning and fundraising participation, and supporting the principal and pastor (who are part of the Board.) With the help of the Healey Educational Foundation, Board members will be drawn from the wider community, not just those currently involved in St. Raphael Parish or School. The Board will also select the principal, should that position become open. (Mrs. Aviña has committed to staying here through the 2020-2021 School Year.)

The School will continue to be a ministry of the Church of St. Raphael. The Principal will continue to be the chief administrator of the school and will hire and supervise all school staff. The Pastor will continue to have the role of ensuring the Catholic identity of the school and overseeing the religious education of students.

St. Raphael School Rake-a-thon 2019 On Saturday, October 26, St. Raphael School students, parents, and teachers will be join-ing together to rake the yards of at home-owners in the community who are in need of assistance. If you or someone you know would like to have your yard raked by St. Raphael School, please contact Geri Cox at 763-232-0897. To ensure fairness, we ask the following:

• Please call no earlier than Monday, September 30.

• Yards will only be accepted via phone call.

• Yards will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis.

• We have starting limit of ten yards; all requests received after that will be placed on a waiting list.

We will expand our yard list based on the number of volunteers available.

We hope to rake as many yards as we can! Please pray for good weather and God bless you for supporting St. Raphael Catholic School.

The fundraising kick-off for the Rake-a-thon will be October 10th.
