Messages from our ClergyRosh Hashanah – September 29/30
Yom Kippur – October 8/9
There is a proverb attributed to the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tse which
states: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.” Needless to say,
the proverb’s meaning is obvious. It is also profound. Obvious, because we cannot
go anywhere without that first step. Profound because that first step is crucial in ev-
erything we do. Energy is needed to take that first step, but vision is needed to un-
derstand where we are going and why
.
The holidays we are about to embark upon require both efforts to reach an under-
standing of our lives and how they impact others. Most importantly, however, is
how these holidays impact each of us individually. Some will wonder about why, atthis stage in our lives, do we need to be concerned about where we are going? Well, truth be told, if we don’t
know where we are going, how can we ever get there.
So, where is it we are going? Let’s start the day – we are going to “get up,” we are going to fix “breakfast,” we
are going to get “dressed,” we are going to start our “day.” Simple enough! However, all these things lead us to
a very import aspect of life – purpose. This is the one ingredient that is necessary for a meaningful life that
never ends just because of age. It is the impetus for fulfillment.
This, in essence, is what these holidays are all about. Sure, we utter words, we listen to music, we perform cer-
tain rituals, and we leave satisfied that we have reached another milestone in our lives. However, the real sig-
nificance can be found in sitting next to a friend or relative, exchanging wishes for a better year ahead, and
understanding that when we take that first step it is the step of continuation.
Life is the significant word we read in the prayer book. Life is the culmination of the past and the beginning of
the future. When we utter the compelling phrase, “May you be inscribed in the Book of Life,” we are proclaim-
ing that Rosh Hashanah represents the beginning of the rest of our lives. It is a time to set aside the petty griev-
ances and insignificant animosities to remember that what we do with the rest of our lives is what really matters.
Rosh Hashanah was designed to help us in our journey – it is the first step in completing the next one and the
next one after that. Each step we take can give us the ability to look forward while still remembering what we
left behind.
Perhaps you will be interested in learning more about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur during my two upcom-
ing lectures at the Chapel Center: September 24 – “Preparing for a great experience of practices, traditions and
rituals of the High Holidays.” October 29 – An evaluation of our High Holiday experiences and “How it taught
us to deal with aging gracefully and our physical and emotional changes.”
In the meantime, I am looking forward to spending my 17th High Holidays with you. The Hebrew letters that
equal 17 spell the word “Tov” – and, yes, it has been good to be with you these years. I hope it has been good
for you. I look forward to another year of fulfillment and joy as we continue taking that first step together into a
new chapter in our lives.
Sandi joins me is wishing everyone a great, joyous New Year.
Rabbi Irwin Wiener, D.D.

Congregant’s Thank you Notes
We thank you for your expressions of sympathy on the death of our sister-in-law, Shirley Codkind. Your
kindness is very much appreciated.
The Codkind Family
It is difficult to find words that will adequately express my gratitude for all the love, concern, assistance,
calls and cards from my SLJC family.
So I will simply say THANK YOU - you have touched myheart!!!
Appreciatively, Shirley Gersten
As we look forward to a new year, we all pray for one of peace, good health, respect among peoples, and the
warmth of family and friendships. Jim and I wish you all a very happy and wonderful New Year.
Looking ahead, I have an image in my mind of what synagogue represents. To me, it is a three-pillared organi-
zation. The first, of course, is spirituality. I find the combination of prayer and music an experience that
strengthens me and calms me at the same time. I can forget any concerns on my mind and breathe deeply,
knowing I have been gifted with an ability to cope.
The second pillar is community. Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation, put simply, is us. It is all of us. We may
come from completely different backgrounds and experiences, yet we are here now as one. Individually, we
contribute to a whole that puts forth an important face to the world. Yes, as a people we have been threatened
and made fearful at times, even worse. But we are strong. Especially as a congregation primarily composed of
“seniors,” one way we choose to show who we are is by defining ourselves through our membership in an insti-
tution that is communal. When I sit on the bima each month and look out, it is overwhelmingly heartening to
see all of you sitting there and participating in our shared Jewish activity.
Beyond spirituality and community, the third pillar, fiscal stability, is much more pragmatic. To continue to
exist—to thrive, actually—we need fiscal stability. The Board of Directors meets monthly to discuss and make
decisions that affect the fiscal stability of Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation. These decisions, among others, in-
clude our dues structure, our pricing plans for such things as guest tickets for High Holiday services, and our
pricing plans for community catered events such as the Break-the-Fast and the community Seder. All these
decisions are informed by what costs we know we will incur (i.e. salaries, rent, insurance, member services,
committee expenses, etc.) as well as estimates of dues, donations, and other income sources. The sensible deci-
sions of the Board of Directors have led us to function within reasonable and stable budgetary guidelines.
Yet all of theses pillars depend totally on you. It is your commitment to membership and to donations that al-
lows Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation to continue to be a viable Jewish institution. It is also your commitment
to perpetuate traditional and new activities by your volunteerism, financial support, and attendance. But we
need more of you and from you. We have so many capable individuals among us—we need you to step up and
join the Board of Directors or lead single activities. Sun Lakes Jewish Congregation is only as strong as its
members, and our success over time has come about because we have developed effective leadership. I am
speaking to each of you personally. Every one of you has something to contribute. As we look forward to this
new year, won’t you say yes to our SLJC community?
Havurah Chai
Havurah Chai, is a Social group for Senior Jewish Singles now in its 4th year. There are two events held
monthly. Annual dues are your smiles and your reward is making new friends as our membership has grown to

Men’s ClubThe Men’s Club is a social organization that meets the first Tuesday of the month from September through
June. We have interesting speakers from our community to address our membership each of these months.
Guests are always invited, and refreshments are provided. The organization also has special lunches as well as
various site visits in the local area. The Temple membership is encouraged to be members of the Men’s Club to
enable fellowship throughout our Jewish Community and achieve our social responsibility as a Jewish Com-
munity. Membership dues are due on July 1st each year. It is truly the BEST DEAL in town.
Men’s Club also collects non-perishable food for local food banks prior to monthly services curbside in front of
the Chapel. Sheldon Kruger has been performing this activity and reports the amount of food collection each
the month. However, Sheldon can no longer perform this due to illness and a volunteer or volunteers are
needed for this very helpful and needed service. Please donate and consider volunteering for this needed serv-
ice!
The next meeting is scheduled for September 3rd at 6:30pm at the Chapel Center. Our speaker will be Author
Howard Gershkowitz. As always, wives and prospective members are always welcome. Mr. Gershkowitz the
author of “The Operator: How I Wrote and Published My First Novel.” The Annual Lox and Bagel Brunch is
scheduled for September 22, 2019 for paid-up members. Mark your calendars!
Future speakers are Author and Stress expert Bill Svoboda, Jewish Free Loan Association; Phoenix, Jewish
Free Loan Association Phoenix; and Kim Moyers- Downtown Chandler Development Director. A visit is also
scheduled for the PING Golf Club Factory 17-18 October 2019. Many have signed up for this event and there
are still some openings. Future events, visits, and lunches are being planned.
For further information contact Steve Horowitz [email protected]

Lone Solder Program
Our third annual Hanukkah Greeting Letter Campaign will begin in September. Rather than handing out
packets to all congregants at Rosh Hashanah services, they will be available in the lobby starting with the Sep-
tember 13th Shabbat Service and all services through November 8th Shabbat Services. The completed letters can
be returned at the same times. Arrangements are being discussed to have letters also written at meetings of
SLJC affiliate organizations.
The recipients of your letters love the fact that you have taken the time to acknowledge and support them . The
letters enhance their holiday experience and energize them to meet the challenges of being in the IDF. Let them
know the SLJC cares!!The campaign is being expanded to include the entire Phoenix Valley with a Youth Edu-
cation Program. Committee members( all SLJC members) will presenting programs about Lone Soldiers to 15

Our assisted living is accredited for two reasons. You. And your family. Because having the confidence & peace of
mind of accreditation is important. That’s why
SRG communities are accredited by CARF
International. It’s an independent organization
that sets exceedingly high standards for care and
service. It’s a lot like an accreditation for a hospital
or college. Or a five-star rating for a hotel.
We think you’ll find that our accreditation
is only one of the many reasons you’ll
like what you see.
