Mikey Moyers (Greene Hills Club) made a successful return to VSGA
events this summer and is one of two players in the VSGA Mid-
Amateur field to reach match play at the VSGA Amateur and finish in
the top five at the Delta Dental State Open of Virginia. Justin Young
(Ballyhack GC), the 2017 VSGA Mid-Amateur champion, is the other.
Moyers is a three-time VSGA Junior Match Play champion and had a
successful career at Virginia Tech before trying his hand at profession-
al golf. He regained his amateur status last year and hinted at the
State Open that he may make another run at a professional career
next year. He’ll look to add to his VSGA resume at Bayville.
Back in action
Tap-ins
Back to back champs in the Mid-Amateur? It happens quite
often. Marshall Tinsley (Winton Farm) will look to become the
fourth player since 2009 to accomplish the feat. Nick Biesecker
won consecutive titles in 2008 and 2009. Jon Hurst won two
straight in 2013 and 2014, and Matt Chandler won back-to-back
titles in 2015 and 2016. … Tinsley finished tied for fifth at the
Delta Dental State Open of Virginia after posting a final-round
66, tied for the low Saturday round at Ballyhack with low profes-
sional John O’Leary. … Dustin Groves (The Club at Glenmore)
also finished in the top 10 at Ballyhack, tying for seventh. Groves
reached the quarterfinals at the VSGA Amateur before falling to
Alex Price. … Roger Newsom (Elizabeth Manor G&CC) is partici-
pating at Bayville. He reached the final match of last year’s U.S.
Senior Amateur and participated in this year’s U.S. Amateur
Championship at Bandon Dunes in Oregon. He’s a two-time
State Open of Virginia champion. Past champion Scott Shingler
(Dominion Valley CC) also played in the U.S. Amateur this sum-
mer. … Another two-time State Open champion, Evan Beck
(Princess Anne CC), is in the field. … Four Bayville members are
participating in the Mid-Amateur: Stephen Whitfield, Alex
Mitchum, Eric Rosenfelt and Jonathan Coats. Coats recently
regained his amateur status.
