CLUB NEWS

A May long weekend celebration in Cumberland....a July Canada Day celebration

in Courtenay which this year had a special meaning because of the 100 Year

Celebration of the City of Courtenay and also the Canada Day Tea Dance at

the Native Sons that we played a very important part in......and an August long

weekend in Comox to celebrate it’s special time of Nautical Days and the Filberg

Festival. We also had another very successful Pancake Breakfast in July. Hope you

were able to attend and enjoy some or all of these festivities....and if you did, you

got the chance to check out the fi re trucks and politicians three diff erent times.

The Evergreen Club was somewhat quieter over the summer months but things

are beginning to ramp up for a very busy 2015-2016 winter run. With a number

of clubs taking the summer off the activity level was down but now here we go

again....The Choristers will be having their 7th Annual Variety show this month for

one and it is always a very popular event.....a Fall Garage Sale is scheduled for

this month and another Pancake Breakfast for early October. That’s just a start to

what looks like another busy season of activities.

A big thank you and congratulations to Mary Satwatzky, our June recipient of

“Volunteer of the Month”. As mentioned in the June newsletter, Mary is quite

involved in a number of club activities and adds much input into those clubs.

She is especially eff ective in keeping the Friday Night Dance activities going and

keeping it a robust organization. As part of the Friday Night Dance Team myself,

I have been able to see fi rst hand and appreciate her contributions. Well done

Mary!!

So Welcome Back to everyone who has been busy enjoying the sunshine. I do

hope you all had a great summer and now it’s onward and forward to another busy

time. Enjoy the club....enjoy the activities it provides...and always be thankful for

the great facilities we have....see you at the club....gk

Wow! What a summer, hope everyone

enjoyed their brown lawns.

We are getting ready for a hectic

month, back to singing out and

preparing for our fantastic concert. As

always Rick has prepared a wonderful

one, all songs are written or sung by

Canadians. I’m sure everyone will be

impressed. We are back to our usual

schedule – Fridays, 10 – 11:30am.

Hope to see you all .

Although the Club did not meet in July

or August members weren’t taking

a holiday. We had a photoshoot on

Saltspring Island and another to Island

Buff alo in Black Creek. At the latter we

saw two large herds, one of buff alo

and the other water buff alo. We had

the chance to buy some buff alo steaks

as a bonus. The moon pictures, one

fewer than usual were, well received

and the one you liked the best, by

quite a distance, was the one showing

two cruise ships and a full moon taken

at Kin Beach. We also enjoyed our

annual picnic at Kin Beach, eating well

and playing Bocce. The next display

which will show in early September, aft er our fi rst meeting of the new year,

will be an open choice, so expect

some variety there. We meet every

fi rst and third Tuesday in the month in

the Soroptimist Lounge at 1.00 p.m.

We will enjoy a change of leadership

as I step down and Beth Millar takes

my place. Can’t wait!

Friday Night Dance

It’s amazing how quickly time is going by and preparations by both the over 3500

competing athletes and North Vancouver, the host for this year’s 55+ BC Games

are well under way. Many of us are rediscovering muscles we knew we had, but

apparently have been giving them a bit of a holiday over the winter. I hope that

old expression “no pain, no gain” actually works.

North Vancouver has started to put the fi nishing touches on their venues and

updating their website regularly; www.55plusbcgames.org . They have added

an “Accommodation” section which is designed to let you you know what

accommodations are available close to your sport. Many of you have already

secured accommodations for the games, but if you haven’t, you should start

making arrangements now. Many hotels block booked rooms for athletes many

months ago, some athletes/teams qualify and others don’t, these available

rooms can change daily. They also book off rooms for their regular customers as

the games get closer, some of these rooms will also become available. So, if you

aren’t able to book a room at your hotel of choice, keep trying each day.

June 25 is the registration deadline, so if you haven’t registered yet, please contact

the representative for your sport as soon as possible. Individual sport coordinators

can also be found on the website ,www.55plusbcgames.org for Zone 2.

Circle the date July 15th at 1:00 pm at the Native Son’s Hall in Courtenay for the

Orientation Clinic. You will receive a new shirt with the new logo -Word has it

that the shirts and jackets you now own may become “Collectors” items as the

rebranding process of the BC Senior Games to the BC 55+ Games is in full

swing. All of a sudden, we’re a whole lot younger! You will also receive the latest

updates for the 55+BC Games. This is an excellent opportunity to meet fellow

participants, yours truly and ask any questions you may have. Did I mention great

door prizes?

As the curlers sit back and relax before the games, the rest of us are gearing up in

preparation for the North Vancouver Games. Have fun getting ready and please

don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Table TennisHello table tennis members - I can’t

take it in at the moment, but I do have

to tell you with extreme sadness and

aching heart, that our President Patti

Robertson, (my name for her ‘Ping

Pong Patti’), died on Monday, July

20th.

She worked hard and cared so much

for our club and its members. Table

tennis was her passion. She loved it

when lots of players showed up and

the hall was a buzz with the noise of the

balls and the laughter of the players,

all enjoying chasing the little ball and

shouts of joy when at the end of a long

rally someone won.....she loved the

game, (had a great backhand) and

the people. Even in her absence I

would call her or she call me, because

she wanted to know who was there

playing. She will be so missed. If at

all possible wherever she is, I know

she will get a group together to play

and declare ‘game on’!!! Farewell Ping

Pong Patti and thank you.

We will return to normal playing times

including Monday, 11.30 am to 1.30

pm on September 14th. At that time

most vacations and summer outings

will come to a close; so get your winter

programme organized and come out

and play either Monday (11.30 am

to 1.30 pm) or Tuesday (12.30 pm to

4.00 pm). We really want to get this

club running to full capacity so please

join us. To continue Patti’s enthusiasm,

we would love to see people eager to

help in running this club and preparing

the hall for play. Remember activity

and participation keeps your body and

brain very alert and added bonus, it’s

fun and exciting and you can meet new

people. Bats and balls are provided,

the cost for Evergreen members is 75

cents per visit. At least give it a try,

nothing ventured, nothing gained, so

hopefully we will see you in the future,

meanwhile enjoy the summer.

Gloria

During the summer, some of us read

Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman,

but not before re-reading To Kill a

great praise. Another book was Sara

Gruen’s latest, At The Water’s Edge.

She wrote, Water for Elephants.

If you feel like sharing the books you are

reading, your are invited to join us on

Oct. 5th , the 1st Monday in October

Tuesday,September 8th & Tuesday, September 22nd, 20154:30 pm - 6:15 pm Rotary HallWow. The sun and clear skies are

beautiful, but they are drying us out

like a prune! I have never much liked

a lot of rain (being a former Albertan),

but have grown to love the greeness

of this island very much over the years.

I am heard frequently, please let it rain!

We are all ready to play and sing

some more. We are a club that does

not teach. We welcome beginners

& experienced , alike. Our songs are

sent to us via computer by Terry, ahead

of time. This allows you to practice (or

not...shame on me) all you like before

our get togethers. At our sessions the

music is displayed on a screen, so no

printed material is necessary. We start

with simple chords and songs, and in

the last 45 minutes move onto more

complicated chords...made easy by

that word mom taught us...practice!!

If you are thinking you might be

interested in playing the uke, we have

a loaner that can be signed our and

taken home for a couple of weeks

to experiment and play with, before

making a purchase.

Our only Club requirement is a current

Hello all, there is lots to catch up on.

For our month end June tournament, held on the 26th. we played “Devils and

Horseshoes”. This is always a lot of fun and a game anyone can win. A lot of luck is

involved and of course some skill. The winners were Anna Robitaille, Beth Millar,

Merv Diesing and Les Bowman. For the KP Paula Reid won the ladies and Dixon

Hiscock the men’s KP. There were 32 members participated in the tournament.

Our “away game” for July was held at Glacier Greens Golf Course. Twenty of our

members played and later stayed for lunch and liquid refreshment. The liquid

refreshment was particularly good, it was one of those hot, hot days we had in

July.

For the July month end tournament we played Yellow Ball (just so we could get

it right). There were 41 participants and the winners with a score of 35 were,

Sue Liesch, George Allen, Lorraine Boyd and Dixon Hiscock. The ladies KP was

won by Beth Millar and the men’s by Richard Hicks. Well done all you winners.

We would like to thank Longlands Golf Course for providing us with tea, coff ee

and cookies and also a free pass to each of the KP winners. There were other

happenings in July which should be mentioned. Congratulations goes to Daphne

Welsh and Ted Johns on their engagement and also to Victor Simonson for the

Courtenay Citizen of the Century Award.

The August “away game” was held at Mulligan’s Golf Course. Thirty two of our

members played and aft erwards traveled a short distance down the highway to

Sunnydale Golf Course where we enjoyed lunch.

I hate to mention this so soon, because it doesn’t seem that long since this years

golf season started in the Spring. However, our fi nal banquet and tournament is

fast approaching -so mark your calendars, September 25th.

Anyone interested in joining our fun golf club and would like more info. please

CLUB NEWS

The Second Stage Players have met

monthly through the summer. Our

weekly Monday meetings begin

on August 31st from 3:15-5:00 pm

upstairs in the Filberg Centre. We are

welcoming new members.

Our remarkable playwright, Betty

Annand, has written yet another

entertaining play with comic relief

entitled: “A 2015 Christmas Carol.”

Rehearsals begin in September and

Val Parmley will be directing a cast of

enthusiastic actors.

A drama club is much more than

getting ready for performances. It’s

all about being part of a drama family

and developing camaraderie and

friendship. There are a myriad of jobs

involved in putting on a play. We

need people to assist with costumes,

hair, props, sets, advertising and stage

managing. Second Stage Players

welcome experienced and ingenue

members.

The Second Stage Players Drama Club

runs all year and we will be performing

another play in the spring. Hope you

can join us!

Again, thank you to all the Evergreen

and Community members who attend

our performances!

Heather Rapin.

Drama ClubOur July get together was on July 8th,

aft er welcoming everyone we sang

Happy Birthday to four members.

Barb Muller informed us how to

obtain full transportation costs for

both patients and cars for out of

town medical appointments such as

Victoria, Vancouver etc. Tony told

some jokes followed by members

speaking of their holidays taken this

year. Our monthly lunch was at Salmon

Point, where we sat outside on the

patio, everyone found this enjoyable.

Aft er the meeting refreshments were

served.

We haven’t been too active this

summer due to the hot weather not

being suitable for some of our outdoor

activities. Some of our members

helped at the July 1st Tea Dance and at

the Pancake Breakfast. Our Pot Luck

picnic is at Kitty Coleman Campsite

August 13th. We are looking forward

to the Classic Cruisers taking us for a

ride in September. The date will be

announced later. I would like to thank

all those who help keep our Meet &

Greet Group going.

HeartstringsThe only news this month is sad

news as we lost one of our members,

Aneta Sutterr who was a long time

member of our group and passed

last month she will be sorely missed.

It is drawing close to the end of the

summer and holiday season and the

gang will be in full swing in the coming

months . We would welcome anyone

who plays an instrument to come out

and join in the fun and friendship.

Hope everyone had a great summer, I

know I did.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Blooming Flowers, Smiling dogs, and Creating Art!Those who know Chris know she’s no ‘shrinking violet!’ A few chats with Chris

and you will get a smile and a fast talk on what matters to her. This avid gardener

previously sat on the NI Rhodo Society board, and has shown her one acre of

garden many times for various tours. She lives in Royston with her hubby and

their Rhodesian ridgeback named Kobe whom they saved from the SPCA (aft er

having their beloved bearded collie - Jasper). Born in England, Chris lived in

Calgary since 1982 and moved to the valley in 2004. It was Betty Cartwright

who encouraged her to join the Evergreen Art Group. “She said you’ll enjoy it

and I do! They are a fun outgoing group.” says Chris, “I’ve been at it for 5 or 6

years now.”

Chris volunteers her time as the Art Group’s committee rep. She attends the

Evergreen Club meetings on their behalf and reports all the info shared back

to the group. She’s also one of the key volunteers’ behind the Evergreen Art

group shows. She puts in many hours with promotions, organizing equipment,

decorating, displays and room layout tasks. You will also see her paper arts on

display for sale in the glass case in the lounge (proceeds go to the Evergreen

Club).

Chris enjoys diff erent mediums and exploring Asian themes in her paper art. So

what do some of her Art Group cohorts have to say? “She’s a fantastic painter,”

says Ann Freitag. “She’s a great one for welcoming people and volunteering,” says Marcia Wilford. Other words describing Chris were shouted out from her

art group peers like: bubbly, energetic, and enthusiastic! Congrats Chris!

BINGO ATTENDANT SUBSTITUTELove the game and have knowledge on the rules? Do you have good communication skills and are comfortable on the

microphone? We need people to help facilitate our Friday Bingo. We are looking for a few volunteers who could be called

upon to assist in tasks, such as; setting up, selling cards, and dividing the prize money. Set up is approx. 12:45pm on the

required day with Bingo from 1pm-3pm. Come on out and meet new people1

AFTERNOON FOOD SERVICE HOSTESS/HOSTS We are running short on our beloved PM volunteers and it may aff ect the kitchen having to close early. Would you love

to meet new people while volunteering in the kitchen? We are proud of our kitchen volunteers and our kitchen services.

Why not be a part of it? Full training will be provided and fl exibility is always part of the deal. Weekdays 1:00pm - 3:30pm
