Welcome to...

After the summer holidays, September always feels like arefreshing and exciting month. There’s a slight nip in thebreeze and it’s a time of fresh starts. New terms start forschools and colleges, making it a great time to revisit an oldinterest or try something new. If classes aren’t your thing, then get your cultural kicks from one of the many eventsacross the county that celebrate our local history andheritage – turn to our ‘What’s On’ pages for lots of ideas.Speaking of trying new things, there are some tantalizingtreats to tempt your taste buds this month. Why not visitthe Beer and Cider Festival or the Great Taste FoodMarket in Gloucester? Or, closer to home in Cheltenham, visit The Wheatsheaf in Leckhampton for one of theirspecial ‘taster’ evenings where delicious treats will beserved up using top quality meat and seasonal produce. Now is also the time to focus on your home and gardenand get those important bits of maintenance done beforethe dark nights and winter weather are upon us. Perhapsyour gutter needs clearing, your garden needs a tidy-up, oryour chimney needs sweeping before longer evenings andcooler temperatures draw you to your fireside. See ourHomes and Gardens section for advertisers who can helpyou with all of these tasks. If all that sounds too much like hard work, and summerhas left you feeling more frazzled than relaxed, then spoilyourself with some pampering. Whether it’s an indulgentSunday lunch, a relaxing massage or simply an uplifting walkin the country, you will find plenty of inspiration in the pagesof this magazine.

Have a great September!

WITH Gloucester Rugby being onlydays away now from its opening matchagainst Northampton Saints at FranklinsGardens on Sunday, 4th September, wewent along to Kingsholm to hear fromGloucester’s local lad, Andy Hazell, onwhat life is like as they begin an excitingnew season.Andy is Gloucester’s longest serving

player, with 244 games since his debutin 1997 and is signed up to stay atGloucester until the summer of 2013.Being a local lad through and through,

from his early school days at HempstedPrimary School to Severn Vale School,Andy says nothing could prise him away from hisGloucester roots. While at Severn Vale his sports master suggested rugby

was more of his game than football, and Andy went alongto the under 19’s trial at Oxstalls. He was picked by coachRichard Hill and put forward to go professional. After a tough six months of challenging training, with

the support of his family, he proved his worth and wasdelighted to be rewarded with a contract. Andy trainsnearly every day, and says “Gloucester has a specialatmosphere, great stadium and fantastic supporters.”

His family are amongst his greatestfans and avid critics. He has twoyoung daughters who often sporttheir rugby shirts to support theirdad. Being a Gloucester boy he feelsa special responsibility to his fans. Beit his cousins in the stand or his fansin the supermarket – being a localplayer means he is certainly kept onhis toes!A specialist open-side flanker,

Andy has won 7 caps for Englandand was in the training squad for twoworld cups. When asked which clubs he

considers to be Gloucester’s greatest rivals, Andysuggested Worcester Warriors and Bath – who visitKingsholm on the 10th and 24th September respectively. He feels a huge sense of pride playing for Gloucesterand is looking forward to the new season with greatanticipation, playing alongside fellow old favouritessuch as Lesley Vainikolo and Peter Buxton as well asGloucester’s new signings for the 2011-2012 season.

Forget about buying boringshop bought scotch eggswith no taste. If you want to impress yourfriends, or your family withsomething different, thenlook no further. You canincrease or decrease thechilli to taste, dependingon who you’re catering for.

You will need:500g high quality sausage meat; 10 eggs (8 for the scotcheggs and 2 for the egg wash); 1 medium onion; 3 clovesof garlic; 1½ spoons of Italian herbs (dried or freshchopped basil, rosemary and thyme; generous helping ofsalt and pepper; 2 dessert spoons of chilli sauce;2 dessert spoons of tomato sauce; handful of choppedparsley; 200g breadcrumbs; 200g flour; small amount ofmilk to add to egg wash; vegetable oil for frying.MethodStart by boiling the 8 eggs on a medium/high heat for 8minutes. In the meantime, put the sausage meat in a largemixing bowl, adding in 3 cloves of chopped garlic as wellas the chopped onion. Start adding in the Italian herbs, chilli sauce, tomato ketchup, parsley and the salt andpepper. To mix use a large wooden spoon to thoroughlybind all the ingredients together.Prepare your working surface with a tray of the flour, separate tray of breadcrumbs and whisk the eggs and milktogether for the egg wash. When the eggs are cooked, peel back the shells. To makethe scotch eggs come together, cover your hands in agenerous amount of the flour and take a handful of thesausage meat. Squash the sausage meat between twohands to form a small pancake shape, making sure there’senough mixture to cover the egg. If you find you needmore flour to stop the mixture from sticking together, simply add more as necessary. Take an egg and wrap themixture around it, making sure it’s covered all the wayaround. Afterwards, roll the egg in the egg wash, and thencover with breadcrumbs. To cook the scotch eggs, use a fryer at a setting of 170degrees, turning occasionally for 12-15 minutes until theyturn a golden brown colour. Alternatively, you can use aheavy based frying pan on a medium heat to cook themfor roughly 5 minutes, and then pop in the oven for afurther 7-8 minutes for a lighter recipe.Leave to cool and cut in halves or quarters for a very fillingand beautifully tasting snack or starter for a dinner party inany season. We love dipping them in more sweet chillisauce for an extra fiery kick!

SUE RYDER Leckhampton Court Hospice has organisedthree great events for autumn. You can have a wonderful dayout with all the family, enjoy the benefit of a bit of healthy exerciseor put your business acumen to the test (or all three!) – andhelp raise funds to support local people when they need it most. The Hospice provides beds and specialist palliative care for

residents from all over Gloucestershire – an important servicethat requires as much financial support as possible. However,it’s not all about ‘hand outs’ – Sue Ryder want those contributingto benefit from their involvement too.

Autumn FayreThe Autumn Fayre takes place on Saturday 10th September

and promises to be a great occasion for all ages. There will bea bouncy castle, face painters, a barbecue and interesting stalls. The entertainment starts with the Music Man at 11.15am and

rounds off at 3.15pm with the Gloucestershire Morrris Mendancing through Cheltenham en route to finishing with a flourishat the Hospice. Tickets are available on the gate (which opensat 11am) – only £2 for adults and £1 for children. If you’re unable to join in on the day, but still wish to help,

why not donate a bottle for the tombola in advance or, perhaps,a prize suitable for the raffle?

Ride for RyderIf you are looking for a challenge and a focus for your fitness

regime, you can support the Hospice by taking part in their annualcycling challenge – Ride for Ryder – which takes place on Sunday2nd October. It starts from Cheltenham Race Course and takes in 45 miles

of breathtaking Gloucestershire countryside. Entry is £12 inadvance and £15 on the day, and Sue Ryder asks that each cyclistaims to raise £75 for the hospice and, even if 45 miles ‘in thesaddle’ holds no fear for you, why not just take on the fundraisingchallenge instead?

To put your effort into perspective – £75 is equivalent to threesessions of physio-therapy that can help a patient with a lifethreatening condition with their mobility and thereby their qualityof life.

Big Wigs Business ChallengeIf you’d prefer to put your entrepreneurial flair to use for a

good cause – enter a team in the Big Wigs Business Challengeand Sue Ryder will give you £50 to take away and grow intomore cash for the Hospice over four months. For more information about any of the above please

contact Sue Ryder direct – details below.

Seventy-one years ago the decision was made todemolish a former Cheltenham landmark; theWinter Garden. Built in 1879 the Winter Gardenhas been described as “one of the mostremarkable buildings ever to grace the town”.

Originally intended as a recreation area for theupper classes, the monolithic structure neveractually came to much and most events held therewere less than successful for a variety of reasons. The building changed ownership many times butno owner could make the building pay.

Eventually in 1895 the building was bought bythe town council, primarily because nobody elsewould. The Winter Garden was used as anexhibition hall for a while, staging various events, but it was soon to lose this function as well whenin 1904 the Town Hall was built – right next door.

The building survived throughout the next 35years but by the time the Second World War camein 1939 the Winter Garden was “an ailingalbatross around the council’s neck.” Repairs tothe gigantic structure had been neglected foryears and the buildings safety was questionable.

At this time the structure originally intended tobe Cheltenham’s Crystal Palace served nopurpose whatsoever. The following year, 1940, thecouncil breathed a huge sigh of relief as thedecision was finally made to demolish the WinterGarden. The fabricated excuse was that thebuildings size would have provided the GermanLuftwaffe with an easily identifiable target. Eitherway, the building was quickly removed.

Removing the Winter Garden did not helpCheltenham escape the attentions of the Luftwaffehowever, and Cheltenham did suffer many seriousbombing raids. All that remains of the oncegigantic structure is a few bricks in the side of theTown Hall, bricks that look completely out of placeunless you know the true story behind them.

Caroline or ‘Corky’ – as I’m sure she will be knownto you after just one appointment – is a font ofknowledge in holistic treatments using essential oils.Caroline has just opened her treatment room inMontpellier Terrace and the beautiful art decosurroundings, in conjunction with soothing music, provide the perfect environment to relax. Themassage treatment eases muscle pains through therelease of toxins, relieves stiffness in joints andalleviates poor circulation by increasing oxygen flowin the blood.Upon meeting Caroline we sat and discussed mylifestyle, medical history and any current anxieties inmy life. We talked about how aromatherapy worksthrough massage and its healing properties. Wechose a base oil of grape seed and added essentialoils of rose, frankincense and neroli to helprelaxation, alleviate tension and promote well-being– and one that wouldn’t leave me feeling too ‘oily’ formy afternoon appointment! This was the most comprehensive massage I thinkI have ever had, and was certainly 80 minutes ofsheer indulgence. After ensuring I was comfortableCaroline massaged my body from head to toe a littleat a time, ensuring the rest of my body was keptwarm and keeping my modesty intact. Each fingerand toe was flexed and massaged and even the palmof my hand. Caroline’s calming and caring attitudemade my visit a really pleasant experience and I don’tthink I’ll be waiting for any muscle problems before Ivisit her again!

IInn tthhee GGaarrddeennwith Julia Smith

September is a lovely month, the weather is usuallyrather good, the evenings havenʼt drawn in too muchand the children are back at school!Use biological controlNow is a good time to use abiological control (nematodes)against vine weevil grubs (youknow the little beasts that asgrubs lie in wait in pots ofcyclamen, primulas, begoniasand other species and eat the roots away till the poor plantkeels over). The adult weevils make unsightly notches onthe leaves of plants like rhododendrons, which will not killthem but look horrid. The biological control is good to useon the pot plants but is not so effective in the gardendepending on the soil type. You can buy them from thegarden centre or online. From what I remember you haveto send off for the little ʻcrittersʼ as they donʼt have a shelflife, and they get posted to you. Follow the instructions onthe packet and mix up the microscopic nematode withwater and drench the pots. Donʼt let the compost dry out.Plant ColchicumsNow is also a good time toplant Colchicums (autumnflowering crocuses). Theylike sheltered but sunnypositions under trees (if tooexposed they get beatendown by wind and rain). They look like crocus buthave six anthers instead of three which crocus have. Youbuy them as dry corms, and arrange in small groups ofseven or more where they will be readily seen in theautumn and will make a lovely late display. Warning – allparts of the colchicum plant are poisonous so wash handsafter handling!Divide perennialsIf the weather allows you can get on with lifting anddividing any perennials that have got too congested, andstopped flowering as well as they had been – this can bedone in spring but by then things can get very busy so it isone less job to do. Lift the large clumps and with a pair ofgarden forks back to back, prise them apart into smallerpieces. Discard the woody, congested centre of clumps, replanting pieces which look healthy and have a good rootsystem and new shoots into compost enriched soil withsome bone meal added. These will give a good show thefollowing summer. This can be done up until Christmasdepending on the weather.Asparagus fernsCut asparagus ferns to the ground and getrid of them as they may be harbouring theeggs of the asparagus beetle – Criocerisasparagi. Apply a balanced feed such asblood, fish and bone meal over the soilsurface to help ensure a good crop next year.

MoneyMatterswith Roger Downes

www.andorran.co.uk

Roger Downes FCA is a director of Andorran

The recent stock market crashes made mewonder about where the best place was to investmy money. Not that I plan to answer that questionfor you here – you must do your own research andseek your own advice and not rely onthese musings.

About the sametime, someone toldme that horsenumber 17 inthe big race atYork was a surefire winner –only had to turnup to win, sort of thing. Not that I am encouraginggambling in this article; if youwish to do that, you should do soresponsibly.

But it did make me wonder about all the optionsopen to you if you have a few bob spare or if, morecrucially, you are trying to work out where to putyour life’s savings so that they are making you goodmoney for later life.

The value of investments can go up or down andeven the best fund managers struggle to get themto go in the right direction in times of market freefall. So if that’s too risky, how about a nice, safeinvestment in a bank or building society. Well withbank base rate on the floor, interest rates paid todepositors are miserly.

Mmmm ... property then perhaps? That’s alwaysbeen regarded as a safe haven, but as mostpeople who have tried to market their housesrecently will tell you, trying to sell it just at themoment requires an incredible amount of luck infinding a buyer. And I really don’t want to go backto that tip for York (which is still running by the way).

Good luck with your thoughts. I think I’ll just goback to being ‘Confused of Cheltenham’.

Where toinvest?

I have had plenty of feedbackabout my regular column in TheLocal Answer, from inside andoutside the Police family – withmost of it quite positive. One ofthe comments I received was thatthey would be interested in whatI do in a typical day, which is agood question – so, I thought Iwould give a little snapshot of myworking week.

I have responsibility for thesouthern part of Cheltenhamincluding the Town centre fromThe Reddings in the west toCharlton Kings in the east. I haveto respond to crime trends, dealwith community issues, plan forfuture events, carry out operational activities and attend manymeetings. I am also responsible for 60 members of staff which can bea full time job in itself sometimes as you can imagine.

However, the positives usually outweigh the negatives, and I havea lot of pride in how my team performs and continues to perform;particularly how we have driven down crime over many years hardwork, kept people safe from harm and have done an unprecedentedamount of community engagement. We are not perfect, but my beliefis that we are pretty good at what we do, particularly the work that thecommunity doesn’t see, the meetings, the planning and the late nightpatrols; all trying to keep you safe and keep the wolf from the door.

Apart from my team I am also the conduit into the rest of theorganisation and with our partners. We are supported by the CID, thetraffic department, dog handlers, firearms officers and many others;and taken together with the assistance from our partners such as thestreet scene wardens from the borough council there is not much wecannot deal with effectively and professionally. Some issues keep raisingtheir heads such as irresponsible driving by some cruisers on a Sundaynight or the burglary issue but we know about these problems and aretrying to resolve them, but sometimes these problems are socomplicated and labour intensive it can take years to achieve.

Anyway, the first week in August saw me involved with planningfor the following weekends public order patrol, attending the localmagistrates on a licensing issue, supporting some of my team as theycarried out a drugs warrant in Charlton Kings, dealing with an officerwho has left the Police due to ill health, carrying out several workrelated job chats with some of my supervisors and negotiating extrafunding for anti-social behaviour patrols. Also attending a public meetingwith the Police Authority chair to answer any questions on currentPolicing issues, carrying out foot patrol along the Honeybourne linewith one of my Community Officers, dealing with several staff welfareissues, buying doughnuts for the team as it was my birthday, trying toexplain to staff the implications of the Governments Windsor andHutton reviews, attending a half day training course on new legislation, attending the new Police surgery at Cheltenham Borough Council andto finish my week off I am going to be involved in the Cotswold Pride& Olympic torch day in the Town. A normal week!

I hope the weather is to your liking and please remember to lockthose doors & windows and report anything suspicious. Stay safe!
