Travel writer Porter Fox spent three years exploring 4,000 miles of the border between Maine and Washington, traveling by canoe, freighter, car, and foot. In Northland, he blends a deeply reported and beautifully written story of the region’s history with a riveting account of his travels.

In October 1991, three weather systems collided off the coast of Nova Scotia to create a storm of singular fury, boasting waves over one hundred feet high. Among its victims was the Gloucester, Massachusetts-based swordfishing boat the Andrea Gail, which vanished with all six crew members aboard. “The Perfect Storm” is a real-life thriller that will leave readers with the taste of salt air on their tongues and a sense of terror of the deep.

9/4 - We’re featuring some covers and popu-lar music with classical groups on this episode. Jukeboxes and their popularity extends back much earlier, including swing, opera, and classical music ! We’ll hear popular selections from David Bowie, the Beatles, and talk with Jethro Tull flutist Ian Anderson on today’s What’s New .

9/11 - We’re calling this episode Classical Goes Pop with the King’s Singers, 2Cellos, and even a song from Gordon Sumner, or as you may know him, Sting.

9/18 - We’ll hear music with a political slant by Steven Stucky (August 4, 1964), Mi-chael Daugherty (Jackie-O), and Victoria Bond (Mrs. President). A landmark wind ensemble work by Karel Husa (Music for Prague 1968) will be featured.

9/25 - The banjo was made by Africans in America, adapted from instruments of similar design in Africa. It is frequently associated with country, folk, Irish tradi-tional and bluegrass music.

Learning Through the Seasons is a production of WNMU-FM and Grandparents Teach Too, a nonprofit organization founded by early elementary teachers, reading specialists, and early education childhood specialists Iris Katers, Esther Macalady, Cheryl Anderegg, Jean Hetrick and Tim Fox, who co-authored the book from which the programs are based.

Co-author Iris Katers narrates the weekly pro-gram that promotes the educational benefits for young children of doing the easy fun-filled activities found in the book that use readily available materials found around your home and community.
