That Which We Own Owns Us

For many of these travelers the journey became nearly impossible to continue, because of distance, cold, lack of food, broken equipment, mud, snow, death of pack or draft animals, the steady incline of the mountains before them, and so on.

On such occasions, these migrants usually discovered that their possessions had become a burden to them, and they had to make a choice. If they chose to retain ownership of all their property, it became an anchor that rooted them to the ground and prevented their onward march. In effect, they became owned by that which they owned. Most people made the wise choice, however, and cast their things to the side of the road, or they sold them for a pittance to others who had settled along the trail. As they did so, they became free to continue their journey.

Many of us are just as burdened by possessions in our day as those early pioneers who carried them on their backs. What we own comes to

own us, and this applies also to the feelings and beliefs we own. For many years I have watched people insist, for example, on their right to be angry—in effect, insisting on their right to own their anger. They are, of course, quite right. We do have a right to be angry. But what we own always ends up owning us. Anger becomes a cancer that drives the love and happiness from our lives.

As we learn to fill our lives with unconditional love—or Real Love—instead of anger, we gain the ability to understand other people, to accept them, and to unconditionally love them, and then we acquire the ability to leave our anger by the spiritual roadside like so much baggage. And then we find the freedom and peace we have really wanted all along.

See pg 8 for more details on Greg’s visit to Unity Campus. To learn more about Real Love, look for Real Love books in our bookstore.

During the 1800s many thousands of people made the great migration from the eastern third of the United States to the vast open spaces of the West. They hauled their belongings on their backs, horses, mules, handcarts, and wagons.

Rev. Temple Hayes

The more determined I was to see too far ahead, the less I could see and the more I would feel threatened and uncomfortable. When the apostle Paul stated with wisdom, “for we walk by faith, not by sight,” he knew that for each of us, the seeing does not always reveal the destination of our lives.

What happens when we attempt to see too far ahead on our path to make a move or create an experience regarding our work, our relationships, and our abundance?

We begin to think that the result is only up to us; that our outcome is entirely based upon a lower vibration belief that we are in control. Our spiritual journey can be very exciting if we learn through practice and accomplishment that we say “what” and let God decide “how.” Rev. James Trapp, the president of the Association of Unity Churches stated at our convention in June that we give directions and God makes the corrections.

When we attempt to rush or force events in our lives to occur rather than letting go and letting God, we do not get to benefit from all the moment-to-moment miracles which can occur with any strong intention that we create from a space of prayer. We start to experience emotional responses, such as anxiety and fear, rather than a consciousness of expectation and a faith-based confidence.

We do not allow the spiritual seeds of change to unfold naturally, and often we have not developed the consciousness which prepares us to receive our new experiences. When we change our consciousness, we change our circumstances and our lives forever.

Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female physician in the United States, said, “It is not easy to be a pioneer, but oh, it is so fascinating. I would not

trade one moment, even the worst moment, for all the riches in the world.”

Often, as we are walking through life, we feel as if we are a pioneer, especially when we have learned all of our lives to make things happen and to push our universe. During my 30 years in New Thought, I have seen so many individuals come into our teachings of Unity principles and leave within the first year. They do not understand that you must develop the consciousness to receive the dream rather than develop the dream and force “events” to happen. They usually leave saying that these principles do not work. Of course, they do work for them...for they work by not working. They have developed faith in a belief that the principles do not work, thus creating their own experiences.

In Unity, it is necessary for all of us to develop and walk in faith as our teacher Jesus states so clearly. As one of our Chaplains said recently, “I used to say ‘God is good, all the time,’ and yet, now I believe it.”

For We Walk by Faith

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7

I can remember many nights in Panama, when serving in the U.S. Army Reserve, being asked by the captain to work on night duty and guard our surrounding areas and territory. It was so dark in the jungle, that even when the flashlight was shining forward to show the way, I could only see a tiny tunnel of mostly darkness.

“When we change

our consciousness,

we change our

circumstances and

our lives forever.”

Spirit ExprESSing FAQS

Where do i get the book and workbook?

The book, The Quest for Wholeness, can be purchased at Wings Bookstore. Workbooks will be given to your facilitators prior to your first meeting. For individuals participating, workbooks will be available after Sunday services beginning September 7 (while supplies last.)

How do i sign up for a home study group?

Home study groups (8–10 people) offer the opportunity for a more in-depth study of the book and the concepts presented by Rev. Temple on Sundays. These groups provide a safe space in which to explore and practice God’s activity on a personal level. Each group study is led by a facilitator who assists the group in reviewing and exploring the central topics and themes.

Hosts hold groups in their homes, and groups are held in many locations throughout Tampa Bay, and at a variety of times and days of the week. You may sign up through September 10 for a group located near you by visiting the sign-up table in Friendship Hall.

What will we do during Spirit Expressing?

You will use a journal to guide you through many exer-cises and processes throughout the program following the chapters of the book. During the seven weeks of Spirit Expressing, we have a fun tradition – each week we wear clothing of a particular color to Sunday services (see the chart on left). Feel free to join in the fun!

Spirit Expressing 2008The Quest for Wholeness

E ach fall First Unity friends come together for Spirit Expressing, and lives are changed. This year, for the very first time, First Unity is joining Tampa Unity and Unity

Church of Clearwater in a combined Spirit Expressing experience! Spirit Expressing is a seven-week program of spiritual self-discovery with an emphasis on growth in awareness, involvement, and commitment. It includes Sunday messages based on The Quest for Wholeness by Robert Brumet, the inspiring book we have chosen for our study, and weekly prayer/study groups.

You are invited to join together with a small group of your choice, discussing the same spiritual ideas that Rev. Temple presents on Sundays during those seven weeks, and to participate in many delightful events.

It’s Summertime!

Rev. Helen HornadaySpiritual Education Director

“Come and join

us as together we

shift and expand

our consciousness

and the world’s.”

We live in an abundant, thriving universe. We live in paradise. Whatever we focus on and are grateful for multiplies. Have you noticed that? With this wonderful awareness, let’s not be drawn into reports of lack and limitation.

Let’s turn to the truth within us. We believe in unlimited possibilities and celebrate the life we have created and are creating with our thoughts and feelings right now. To continue to expand and grow in this energy we offer a place and community to thrive in, to express your creativity and fulfill your dreams.

Attending Spiritual Education classes has so many benefits. You connect with others, sometimes making lifelong friends. You are supported where you are and encouraged to stretch your mind and body, open your heart and trust your feelings as you grow in consciousness. Classes can be fun also! We offer a variety of classes, as you can see on the next few pages. You have lots of choices and possibilities.

For the first time we are offering the class Keys to the Kingdom, in late October. This is a 21st century course on prosperity consciousness-

building. It is designed for those who are ready and willing to take a leap of faith necessary to transform a consciousness of limiting beliefs into a consciousness of true unlimited abundance. You will be asked to make a commitment to tithe your time, talent and income for seven weeks beginning at the first class. The classes are uplifting, experiential and fun. To support you during the weeks of this series is a six-CD set and a workbook. For graduates of 4T, this is an opportunity to continue to expand and grow even more prosperous and step into a new vibration. For anyone who wants to understand the spiritual foundation of true abundance and create a life in greater harmony with spiritual law this class is for you.

Namaste,

Fall EquinoxFacilitator: Barbara BertucciMonday: September 22, 7 pm Location: Courtyard

This is a time to celebrate, reflect and release. It is a time for creating balance in your life. As the fall is a time for gathering and harvesting, it is also a time for cleansing. The West represents water and the flow of our life’s journey. Come and celebrate a wonderful outdoor ritual and self-reflection as we gather around a fire pit (weather permitting; otherwise we will gather in Friendship Hall.) Please bring your lawn chair and comfy layered clothes. Gather at 7 pm, ceremony starts at 7:15 pm. Hosted by Barbara A. Bertucci, a student of Shamanic practices for seven years. She has a passion for all living creatures and for Mother Earth and Father Sun. Barbara recently facilitated a very successful Summer Solstice event at First Unity. Come share in the celebration!

Writing Down Your SoulFacilitator: Janet Conner Mondays, September 29 – October 20, 6:45 to 9 pm Location: Rm #301

Ever wonder how Neale Donald Walsch managed to have those Conversations with God? In Writing Down Your Soul (Conari Press, Dec 2008), Janet Conner explains why writing by hand is the single most effective vehicle into unconscious mind and beyond. In this four-part series, you will learn how to enter the mystical theta brain wave state, activate the voice of Spirit, listen with your spiritual ear, silence your inner critics, and literally build new neural pathways in your brain. With this spiritual practice at your fingertips, you’ll always know how to ask for and receive the guidance you need to build the life you want. Suggested Love Offering is $99 including a 50-page workbook.

Thanks to a personal trauma, Janet Conner discovered that writing down your soul can—and will—change your life. To help others find their way from Betrayal to Peace, she created Spiritual Geography, the deep soul writing system that heals the broken heart. When the editor of www.religionandspirituality.com saw Spiritual Geography, he invited her to write a national weekly column for UPI. Six months later, the associate publisher of Conari Press read her series on prayer and invited Janet to write Writing Down Your Soul: How to Activate and Listen to the

Extraordinary Voice Within, due in bookstores this December. Want to know more? Visit www.writingdownyoursoul.com and www.spiritualgeography.com.

Smudge Fan WorkshopFacilitator: Kathi Wahls Saturday, October 4, 10 am to 1 pm Location: Rm #300

Burning of herbs, resins or incense for emotional, psychic, and spiritual purification is common practice among many religious, healing, and spiritual groups. The ritual of smudging can be defined as “the energetic cleansing of a person, place or thing.” A smudge fan is used to direct the smoke. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn about this ancient practice and create your own beautiful feather smudge fan. All materials are included, but if you have a special item you would like to incorporate into your fan, please bring it with you. Suggested Love Offering of $40 includes all supplies. Kathi Wahls LMT, CNHP has been a body worker and natural healthcare practitioner in the Bay area since 1987. She’s a collector and purveyor of crystals, healing stones and other magical things and loves to share her knowledge of the many eclectic spiritual practices she has learned. Stones and crystals have their own unique energy and can assist us in our spiritual growth and development. Using their energies when making sacred tools like smudge fans, prayer beads and crystal grids enhances the potential for growth and healing.

Helping Unity families buy & sell homes for more than 30 years

"When it comes to buying and selling a home we would only use Nelah Parker. She listed and sold a condominium for our family quickly and efficiently. We told her exactly what we wanted for our next home and that is what she found for us. We closed on our home faster then any home we’ve ever purchased...less than 2 weeks from start to finish!”

Nelah is more than a professional when it comes to real estate. There’s something special about her. She almost immediately develops a wonderful, personal connection with you. She’s organized, caring, loving, prompt...a person who’s looking out for you.”

We used to think of Nelah Parker as our realtor. Now we think of her as a special friend.” —Bob and Terri Phillips, First Unity

Reaching Out in LoveCommUniteam is a dynamic action-oriented volunteer group representing First Unity’s outreach program. It is currently composed of eight full-time and several part-time members.

Our mission is to show spirit within through love, peace, understanding and service to our church community, state, nation and the world! Everyone is invited to participate in this team, and by becoming a regular member or a part-time member, you may help with one project or many — one day or be on our on-call list for help as needed. Any way you can get involved will be much appreciated as we continue to reach out and help those around us by offering our love and support. You can also get involved by spreading the word about our projects - attend a meeting and find out how!

If you have been looking for an opportunity to serve others where you can make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities, we invite you to participate in any way that feels right to you. We meet every second Monday from 6 to 7 pm in the Conference room.

On Sunday, September 14 everyone is invited to join us for the second installment of First Unity’s “Big Give,” when we will come together and meet with all who are interested in presenting ideas and/or programs for helping the homeless. First Unity is pledging $750 for this quarter to help with any and all ideas which will raise awareness and funds to help the homeless.

This study group reads and discusses the book, which invites us to open to a richer, deeper experience of our spiritual nature. The course focuses on forgiveness (letting go of thoughts and pictures in our minds that cause us to suffer) as the path to happiness, love and joy. Suggested Love Offering is $5 per class. Rm #300.
