4 THE SCENE SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER 2019

MESSAGE FROM COMMUNITY RECREATION MANAGER & THE RECREATION SUPERVISORThe Seniors’ Activity Centre has transitioned from a bright, colourful, vibrant summer season into preparations for a bustling fall season. The new fall program session will begin on Tuesday, September 3. Staff have prepared an exciting line-up of programs and services for members. Check out the updated Fall and Winter Leisure Guide or E-News and be sure to register early for programs and activities to secure a spot. This year we will again be hosting the 4th annual North Shore Seniors’ Expo on Friday, September 6, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. There will be a program guide available, filled with valuable lectures and workshops as well as an exciting vendor expo in the Community Centre gymnasium. You won’t want to miss this event!Fall is a great time for organizing and purging, so please think of SAC’s on 21st as a place to donate gently used items. The boutique is looking for

new donations and greatly appreciates community support. If you have been away over the summer months, the September Evening Dance on September 26 will be sure to keep you moving, as well as reconnect you with friends and new acquaintances. Buy your ticket in advance to dance the night away with Lou Marocco. As we move into October, the month of giving thanks, the Centre will be closed on Monday, October 14 for Thanksgiving. However, stop by the Fireside Lounge Coffee Bar to sample the drink of the month—Pumpkin Spice Latte and satisfy your sweet tooth anytime with a delicious Mario’s Gelato ice cream. We will continue with ice cream treats year round. — On behalf of the SAC staff, we welcome you back to the Fall season and look forward to connecting with you!

MESSAGE FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD CHAIRWelcome back to the Centre. I hope you all had a great summer and are well rested for a busy fall.Committee members are getting back into action after a two-month break, orienting new committee members and working with program co-ordinators to ensure activities requested by members are in place. Please don’t hesitate to use the ‘You Speak, We Listen’ cards to let us know what activities you would like and how you think we are doing. The cards are located throughout the Centre. We want, need and welcome your input. Good news to share with you. During the 2-week closure in August the kitchen acquired some new equipment, making the chefs very happy—a new

plate warmer, new shelves for the walk in fridge and new chef jackets with logo.Another bit of good news—sometime this fall, new furniture will appear in the lounge by the coffee bar and the small-er lounge at the north entrance by the front desk. Carpeting will also be replaced. Also a new bus is coming in the fall. Should you have the opportunity to see ‘Bus Stop’, a 20-minute film being shown on September 6 at the North Shore Seniors’ Health Expo, please do so as it is a very powerful movie about an older woman with dementia. Senior Collingwood students are taking on a project as a result of seeing this movie. They will be gaining education about dementia, sharing their knowledge with other youth and working one-on-one with people who have developed dementia. We are certainly fortunate to have such sensitive, caring and involved youth in our community. In closing, I look forward to telling you all about a newly formed ‘Outreach’ committee. So please stay tuned for the next edition of the Scene. — Take care, cheers.

Have you ever noticed how artists become totally lost in their work? There’s something about creating an image that calls on every brain cell for focus. This supreme state comes even during the preparations: blocking out the canvas, chalking in the image, and stroking on that first magical brush of colour. “I’ve been standing here painting for three hours and I haven’t once thought

of stopping for tea.” This comment from a painter at the Seniors’ Activity Centre is typical. Whether working in oils, acrylics or watercolours, every painter talks of being totally lost to a world of colour and light.

But for budding newbies, where to start? Seniors’ Activity Centre offers a colourful range of choices. Maureen Coles’ Wednesday acrylics class helps both complete beginners and advanced artists produce beautiful results. Some tips from Maureen: choose an image with good compo sition and interest-ing shapes; block it out with chalk on your canvas; begin with the background and move forward.

THE ZEN OF

PAINTING Written by Valerie Coles

It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see. — Henry David Thoreau

Tonal values are another colour feature to incorporate; values create distance in a painting, lending it third dimensional depth. Maureen shows beginners how to work with a matte medium which dulls an object’s colour, making it ‘fade’ and look farther away than it’s brighter neighbour. Brush techniques are also critical and Maureen helps her painters achieve realism in land-scapes by teaching specific strokes of the brush for clouds, water and trees.

Acrylics are great for beginners because they’re so forgiving. They dry in minutes, allowing quick paint-overs and fix-ups. As one artist put it, “We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.”

Choosing colour can be a challenge. Maureen begins by teaching the intricacies of colour theory beginning with the colour wheel, helping her class identify warm colours versus cold and primary colours versus secondary shades. Another helpful gem is ‘fat over lean’; paint thinly first, then begin adding thicker layers. Maureen also points out that rich colour can only be achieved with paint containing a high level of pigment. Less expensive paints contain more fillers so they aren’t capable of giving a richly coloured result.

Thursday’s class is for every art medium: oils, acrylics, and water-colours. Under the expert guidance of instructor James Elton, who has been painting since childhood, budding painters learn using their favourite paint. Water colours are the least forgiving, and James gives lots of pointers: “Start with the light, then add the dark.”

Oils, the medium of the great classics, are more difficult and take a long time to dry, but they blend beautifully, meaning your master-piece will last for hundreds of years. Gone are the days of highly pungent solvents; today’s mineral spirits are thankfully odourless. However, as James points out, the minute someone opens a tube of oil paint, he can smell the pungent linseed oil.

Maureen’s style is to help but never intrude on Zen moments. She encourages, praises, and gives pointers only when asked.

Which medium should you choose? James explains it boils down to your painting personality. If you like to take your time and ponder each stroke of the brush, then oils are definitely the medium for you. If you are a little impatient and prefer to see results fast, you and acrylics are a marriage made in heaven, but there are drawbacks. Mixing acrylics is more difficult than mixing oils because even as you begin, acrylics are starting to dry. Oils, because they take days to dry, let you play with subtle colour variations that simply aren’t possible with acrylics. But acrylics win the day for most new painters because of their immediate results and their much lower cost. Painters flourish under both Maureen and James and it’s obvious the minute you enter the art studio. Their easy, good natured suggestions are warmly welcomed and there’s a genuine feeling of ‘team’ in the room. Painters admire each other’s work, make gentle suggestions and applaud

successes. In fact, even in studio time with no instructor, there’s a hubbub of friendly energy in the room as painters help and support each other. Despite the zen moments, painters clearly need each other. In fact, the Centre enjoys a ninety percent return rate of its many artists. Several studies have been done exploring artists’ notable state of concentration and a 2008 study revealed how totally therapeutic that state is. Focusing so fully relieves mental stress and this, in turn, relaxes the entire body. Hopeful artists have a palette of choices at the Centre: Tuesday morning is studio time for acrylics; Wednesday morning is Maureen Coles’ acrylics class and Wednesday afternoon is studio time for any medium; Thursday morning is James Elton’s class for any medium, and Thursday afternoon is studio time for oils. Friday afternoon is studio time for any medium.

Great art picks up where nature ends. — Marc Chagall

This fall, a new instructor, Lynn Colpitts will be teaching watercolour on Mondays. So pick your medium, grab a brush and colour the canvas with love. Voilà— you’ve entered the zen zone.

However, there is another group of people who work extremely hard to make our Centre the popular place it is today, and perhaps it is time, or indeed past time, to thank and acknowledge them. There is no doubt, that without the guidance, assistance and co-operation of the management and staff, our Centre would not be the vibrant and lively facility it is today. When describing the relationship between volunteers and staff the words “co-operation” and “respect” come to mind. Actually, the relation-ship is more than just one of co-oper-ation. It’s more of a close friendship between two groups; two separate

entities of varying ages, backgrounds, cultures and sometimes languages. The two teams work together like a well-oiled machine with one aim in mind; to make our Centre the best it can be. And it works! In expressing our thanks to the staff, we must not forget to include the dedicated and talented people who produce our informative and very attractive magazine. It’s a privilege working with such an artistic, imagi-native and creative team; long may it continue! So, our heartfelt thanks to manage-ment and staff for making us shine.

Much has been written over the years about our Centre’s wonderful volun-teers and certainly their experience, energy and enthusiasm has made the West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre a bustling, busy and successful destination for thousands of people, members and non-members alike.

WHAT A TEAM

Hannah Li, Lyris Xu, Charlotte Van der Vorm, and Sophia Su are four high school students who are passionate about environmental sustainability and joined together to form the Green Team.

Sophia began as a busser at the Seniors’ Activity Centre and noticed a large amount of plastic being used in the cafeteria, she then started the Green Initiative which includes forming the Green Team. Together, the four of them are determined to reduce the plastic waste at the Seniors’ Activities Centre and help it transition into an overall greener space. Since starting, they have eliminated the use of plastic utensils, straws and are planning many more initiatives. One of their highlights of the year was being sponsored by BioBag, and distributing biodegradable bags to those who shopped at the annual Flea Market. The Green Team aims to help spread awareness and educate others on responsible waste disposal as well as finding other substitutes to continue to reduce the consumption of plastic at the Seniors’ Activity Centre.
