Among the many great Dutch map publishers active in the seventeenth century were the Visscher family, begun by Claes Jansz Visscher (1587-1652) and continued by his son Nicolaas (1618-1679), grandson Nicolaas II (1649-1702) and then by his grandson’s widow, Elizabeth until her death in 1726. Although mainly art dealers, the Visschers were prolific publishers, producing individual maps and also atlases made up to their customers’ specifications.

Įtakingiausio XVI a. vid. kartografo S. Miunsterio Europos žemėlapis, kuris buvo pateiktas viename populiariausių XVI a. leidinių „Cosmographia“.

Didelio formato žemėlapis su būdingu XVIII a. kartušu vaizduoja Karolio Didžiojo imperiją. Žemėlapį išleido garsi prancūzų leidėjų šeima.

Gilles (1688 - 1766) and Didier (c. 1723 - 1786) Robert de Vaugondy were map publishers, engravers, and cartographers active in Paris during the mid-18th century. The father and son team are descended from the important Sanson cartographic firm, from whom they inherited much of their initial material. The Vaugondys were well respected for the detail and accuracy of their maps. They were known for making excellent use of the considerable resources available in 18th century Paris to produce the most accurate and fantasy-free maps possible. The Vaugondys compiled their maps based upon their own superior geographic knowledge, scholarly research, the journals of contemporary explorers and missionaries, and direct astro-nomical observation. Many Vaugondy maps are also highly praised for their title cartouches, which identify each of the sources referenced - an unusual level of scholar decorum for 18th century France. Their most important work is the beautifully produced Atlas Universel.

Įdomus žemėlapis su tuometinės Europos politinės geografijos aprašymu.

Fine example of Nolin’s map, compiled and engraved in Paris in collaboration with Vincenzo Maria Coro-nelli, who was then working in Paris on grand Celestial and Terrestial Globe for the King of France. The cartographic content is largely identical to Coronelli’s two-sheet map of Europe, which was likely issued shortly after Nolin’s map. The map is beautifully engraved and exhibits the detail and fine craftsmanship which is characteristic of Nolin’s work. Jean Baptiste Louis Clouet was a French cartographer and geogra-pher born 1729 in Rennes. His main work was the “Géographie Moderne” first issued 1767. He died in 1790.

Įžymaus austrų kartografo išskirtinis, milžiniškas, 4 dalių, labai detalus Abiejų Tautų Respu-blikos (Lenkijos-Lietuvos valstybės) žemėlapis.

Franz Anton Schraembl was a Vienna based cartographer working in the later part of the 18th century. Schraembl was partnered with Joseph von Reilly. His great work, the Allgemeiner Grosser Atlas was started in 1786. This ambitious atlas was to be based upon only the most up-to-date cartographic information available. Schraembl derived his maps from the work of cartographers like D’Anville and explorers such as Cook, Roberts, and others. The atlas was finally finished in 1800 but, possibly restricted by its high production cost, enjoyed only relatively minimal circulation.

Johann Baptist Homann (March 20, 1664 - July 1, 1724) was the most prominent and prolific map publisher of the 18th century. Homann was born in Oberkammlach, a small town near Kammlach, Bavaria, Germany. As a young man Homann studied in a Jesuit school and nursed ambitions of becoming a Dominican priest before converting to Protestantism in 1687. Following his conversion, Homann moved to Nuremberg and found employment as a notary. Around 1693 Homan briefly relocated to Vienna, where he lived and studied printing and copper plate engraving until 1695. Afterwards he returned to Nuremberg where, in 1702, he founded the commercial publishing firm that would bear his name. In the next five years Homann produced hundreds of maps and developed a distinctive style characterized by heavy detailed engraving, elaborate allegorical cartouche work, and vivid hand color.

Vienas gražiausių LDK didelio formato žemėlapių, sudarytas Lietuvoje, kas tais laikais buvo labai reta.Jonas Nepreckis (lenk. Jan Nieprzecki, 1718-1750, kitur 1719-1754 m.) – jėzuitų ordino vienuolis. Mokėsi Naugarduko ir Pultusko jėzuitų kolegijose, Varšuvoje studijavo teologiją, 1745 m. įšventintas kunigu. J.Nepreckis buvo labai plačių užmojų asmenybė. Be teologijos, huma-nitarinių dalykų, dar domėjosi gamtos ir tiksliaisiais mokslais. Artimos ir mėgstamos buvo geografija, geodezija, kartografija. Kad J. Ne-preckis domėjosi šiais dalykais liudija tas faktas, kad jis sudarė Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės žemėlapį – „Magni Ducatus Lituaniae in suos palotinatus et districtus divisus delineatus…...“ Jį parengė ir išleido 1749 m., panaudojęs per savo keliones po Lietuvą sukauptas geografijos, topografijos bei geodezijos žinias. Be to, pritaikė ir ankstesnių autorių žemėlapiuose esančią informaciją apie Lietuvos Didžiąją Kunigaikštystę.

Joseph von Reilly was a Viennese art dealer who in his early twenties turned to map publishing, and between the years 1789 and 1806 produced a total of no less than 830 maps. His Schauplatz.. . . der Welt (World Atlas) in fact covered only maps of Europe, whilst the Grosser Deutscher Atlas also included maps of other continents and was, therefore, the first World Atlas produced by an Austrian.

Gerard Mercator (1512 - 1594) is a seminal figure in the history of cartography. Mercator’s calculations and map designs redefined the 16th century concept of cartography and were the first to break away from the Ptolemy model. Many of his systems of measurement, such as the Mercator Projection, are still in use today. Despite his prominence as a cartographer, he started his career as a crafter of scientific instruments.

French cartographers of the eighteenth century became renowned for their theoretical ap-proach to cartography. Phillipe Buache (1700-1773) and Jean-Claude Dezauche (fl.1770-1824), as successors to the influential Guillaume De L’Isle, were at the forefront of this theoretical approach.

Buache’s family were great rivals of the Robert de Vaugondy family and it was Philippe Buache’s output as a mapmaker that made the family name synonymous with the prevailing theoretical cartography. Buache had married De L’Isle’s daughter in 1720 and entered the Depot des cartes et plans de marine in 1721. In 1729 he was appointed “premier geographe du roi”. Buache’s out-put was considerable throughout his career and on his death his widow sold the geographical collection to Jean Nicholas Buache de la Neuville, Philippe’s nephew.

Dezauche acquired the work Buache in 1780, having bought it from Jean Nicolas, as well as the work of many other geographers and cartographers (including De L’Isle). He made his own alterations and improvements to the works, and then re-published them in an improved and up-to-date form

Franz Anton Schraembl (1751-1803) was a Vienna based cartographer working in the later part of the 18th century.

Alexis Hubert Jaillot (c. 1632- 1712) followed Nicholas Sanson (1600 - 1667) and his descendants in ushering in the great age of French Cartography in the late 17th and 18th century. The publishing center of the cartographic world gradually transitioned from Amsterdam to Paris following the disastrous inferno that destroyed the preeminent Blaeu firm in 1672.

Hubert Jaillot was born in Franche-Comte and trained as a sculptor. When he married the daughter of the enlumineur de ala Reine, Nicholas Berey, he found himself positioned to inherit a lucrative map and print publishing firm. When Nicholas Sanson, the premier French cartographer of the day, died Jaillot negoti-ated with his heirs to republish much of Sanson’s work. Though not a cartographer himself, Jaillot’s access to the Sanson plates enabled him to publish numerous maps and atlases with only slight modifications and updates to the originals. As a sculptor and an artist, Jaillot’s maps were particularly admired for their elabo-rate and meaningful allegorical title cartouches and other decorative elements. Jaillot used his allegorical cartouche work to extol the virtues of the Sun King Louis IV, and his military and political triumphs.

Richard William Seale (December 1703 - May 25, 1762) was an English a mapmaker and engraver active in London during the middle part of the 18th century. Seale was the son of Richard and Elizabeth Seale. Richard, his father, was a member of the Stationers Company, suggesting that printing and engraving must have been a family trade. Nonetheless, he did not learn the trade from his father, but rather from Samuel Parker of Clerkenwell, to whom he was apprenticed in 1719. Seale was extremely active as an engraver and publisher from about 1740 until his death in 1762. His cartographic corpus is vast; including pieces engraved for most other notable English cartographers of his period: Willdey, Baron, Toms, Rocque, Basire, Bowles, Benning, among others. In addition to cartographic work, Seale also produce numerous architectural engravings.
