Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sensorineural hearing loss is due to damage,

disorder, or dysfunction of the sensory organ of

the inner ear and/or the hearing nerve.

Damage to the inner ear may be due to the natural aging process, ototoxic medication use, excessive noise

exposure, birth defects, diseases, and inherited

disorders.

This type of loss is characteristic of complaints of “hearing, but not

understanding”, feeling as though others mumble or speak too quickly, having

great difficulty with children and women’s voices, and perhaps most

commonly, having excessive difficulty listening in noisy backgrounds.

Many are frustrated by the hearing loss,

and may not recognize they even

have a hearing impairment at first.

Typically sensorineural loss is not reversible or

pharmaceutically treatable. In order to improve the loudness and clarity of sound,

hearing aids are often the choice treatment.

technology, amplification can be finely tuned and

programmed to the individual’s specific

needs.
