THE TOP SENIORS at Belen High School say showing up is half the battle when it comes to rising to the academic elite. Pictured, in front, from left, are Andrea Sanchez, Jazmin Regalado and Victoria Sanchez; in back, from left, are Yoselin Ordonez, Nicholas Becker, Joseph S. Gabaldon, Daniel Goldberg, Joy Rodgers and Christian Vallejos.

Top Belen High School seniors credit good study habitsBy Brent ruffnerNews-Bulletin Staff [email protected]

BelenThe path to success happens with a few simple ingre-

dients. For the academic top 10 at Belen High School, those

practices seem to come naturally and are as routine as brushing your teeth or tying your shoes at the start of each day.

Now, those students will prepare to take on new chal-lenges and study at different schools all while juggling their duties as high school students.

“It’s crazy, it’s (college) only three months away,” said senior Daniel Goldberg.

Goldberg, who is in the top five in his class, said building a solid foundation of good work habits should help him as he goes on to the next academic level.

Goldberg recently beat a Grants High School golfer in a sudden-death playoff to capture a district champi-onship for the boy’s team. He placed ninth in the state competition.

He will attend New Mexico State University in the fall and said he wants to enroll in a pharmaceutical program as part of his degree.

“You have to choose to study,” Goldberg said, “or choose to mess around. That’s the thing in college ― if you don’t study, you have procrastinated that much more. All of the sudden, you have to stay up until 1 a.m.”

But the top students seem to do the opposite. In fact, some students have played sports such as

basketball, golf and tennis along the way to achieving academic success and have high aspirations for the years ahead.

Nicholas Becker played high school tennis and he said being on a team sport didn’t curb his appetite for knowledge. Instead, it may have helped him forget about school and concentrate on having fun with friends.

He said overnight trips were a “blast” and that travel-ing and horsing around while the team wasn’t on the court were memorable experiences.

This year, the tennis team traveled to New Mexico towns such as Farmington and Las Vegas.

Becker plans to attend Arizona State University in the fall and will major in either molecular biology or use science for the study of animals.

“You need to apply yourself (when you are in class),” Becker said. “But you can’t forget to have fun. You have to know when to take (school) seriously and know when

to have a good time.”Events such as finals, prom and a wrap-up of spring

sports can weigh heavily on a student’s mind in the month of May.

But those pressures don’t seem to bother these stu-dents.

These students seem to be ready to take on tough challenges ahead while battling their current pressures as high school students. Graduation is a short time away and the students say it’s their time to embrace the friends and good times they had in high school.

“You’re only a kid once,” said senior Jazmin Regalado.

But these students have their sights set high. Majors will include pursuing careers in biology, car-

diology and nursing, along with pharmaceutical work. But pursuing these fields didn’t come without a solid foundation and achieving a balance with both friends and school work.

Senior Joy Rodgers said future upperclassmen must practice good study habits and come to class and use the information to get ahead in the future.

“You get out what you put into it,” Rodgers said. “If not actually paying attention, you can pass the class, but not (retain) the information.”

Garek I. AntonioWow! It’s almost time for you to get headed on that new hunt… and as

you head out, we want you to know that you’ve brought more joy into our lives than we could ever put into words. Ever since you were a little boy

you have always had a patient and kind heart – I think we’ve learned more about patience and forgiveness from you than you have from us.

You were a bright, strong-willed, curious, loving little boy who has grown into an intelligent, independent, ambitious, loving young man. You

continue to inspire and make us so very proud. The world is yours Garek continue to inspire and make us so very proud. The world is yours Garek – we can’t wait to see where this hunt takes you!
