Be it cooking or life, Shirley Olson, Menominee, has long

had the recipe for success.

For 11 years, starting in the 1970s, she was the second

cook for the Menominee School District. The district

kitchen, located in the high school, prepared food for all

schools in the district.

“It was the best part-time job I ever had. I am a very good cook and baker,” she said.

She was running a catering business in the area when the head cook called her and asked her to fill in

temporarily while the second cook was dealing with medical issues. Eleven years later Shirley was still

cooking away.

She loved “just working with the children, the kids, they were all so great. Some students would help us

in the kitchen, and they were all special. All the cooks got along,” she said.

The job included attending weeklong workshops in both the U.P. and downstate, including Northern

Michigan University and Michigan State University, to learn about volume cooking and nutrition.

Her love for cooking has grown over the years, to the point where she now has close to 50 cookbooks.

“And I did use them,” she said.

Now, with eye troubles, she doesn’t cook so much and has passed many of the cookbooks onto a daugh-

ter and daughter-in-law.

She usually does a bit of cooking on weekends, but gets her meals Monday through Friday at the Me-

nominee Senior Center. “The food is great,” she said.

She was also a big crafts person, including being a teacher, in her life. She takes part in crafts day at the

center, but needs some help due to her eye troubles.

She has many favorite memories. Perhaps her favorite is when her husband owned horses. They did

horseback riding, snowmobiling and three-wheeling. She also loved to dance with family and friends.

Talk of polkas and the jitterbug still brings a twinkle to her eyes.

She lives in the Bridgeview Apartments. Born in Marinette, she left the area after high school and re-

turned five years later. She married in 1954 and had five children. She married again in 1970 to Obrey.

She credits her son, Dan, with being a great help driving her around and running errands.

She’s a big fan of the senior center transportation bus, and uses it a lot to get back and forth to the cen-

ter and around town.

Escanaba Senior Center Mon-Fri, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Happy fall y’all! I would like to introduce myself.

My name is Lydia LaPalm and I am the new Esca-

naba Senior Center Administrator. I have been

with Community Action Agency for seven years,

working in Personal Care. My husband Mark and I

have been married for 31 years and have two

boys, ages 22 and 19, one attending CMU and

the other NMU. We also have a cat named Reggie.

I am excited to be part of the fun here at the Sen-

ior Center. If you have any suggestions, please let

me know.

I trained in September to become a MMAP Coun-

selor, so don’t forget Open Enrollment for Medi-

care Part D (Prescription Plans) begins Oct. 15

and continues through Dec. 7. Contact your local

MMAP Counselor or call 2-1-1 and request a

counselor to help you review your plan and make

sure it’s providing you with the correct services at

a premium you can afford.

Blue Cross Blue Shield has also released informa-

tion for Legacy Plan C holders about its new rates.

You may also be eligible for a $40-125 subsidy to

help cover the monthly premiums. Subsidy appli-

cations may be acquired from a MMAP Counselor

after Oct. 1. Funds are limited, and we highly en-

courage you to apply early for this subsidy.

Don’t forget to recertify for senior commodities

Oct. 1-15. You will need to bring income proof (no

bank statements) that you are eligible for the

commodity program. Call 786-8850 to make an

appointment.

The Bonifas Fine Arts Center has Senior Art Pro-

ject classes 1-3 p.m. Oct. 11 and Oct. 25. Classes

this month are wood burning, November is cro-

chet and December is paper crafting. There is a

fee. Call to register 786-3833.

Activities are listed in this newsletter, so please

make sure you look through the newsletter for

something you might be interested in.

Menominee Senior Center Mon-Fri, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Come closer, I won’t bite. Muhuahahha. As you can

tell, I love Halloween. It is a fun time of year that we

all can play dress-up and pretend to be anyone we

want to be. I encourage all of you to participate in this

fun time of year and have fun with it. At our center,

we will do our best to create a freaky-fun environment

for you to enjoy.

We will start out October with recertifying everyone

for the monthly CSFP commodity program. It’s an an-

nual chore. We will need to know your name, address,

date of birth, Social Security number, and proof of

monthly income for the entire household. Proof of in-

come, even if it is just Social Security, is still needed

to determine your GROSS income before deductions.

Your bank statement does not show GROSS income,

only net. Please bring your Social Security statement

or SSA-1099 form to show us proof. Also, if you pay

for your Part D premium, we need to know that, too,

because that could affect your eligibility. Your income

will determine if you are eligible or not. We will be set-

ting aside time the first week in October for you to be

recertified. If you do not recertify by the Oct. 18 distri-

bution, you may not be eligible to pick up your box.

On Oct. 12, CJ’s Glass will be here to teach a craft

called “Bevel Whimsy.” This is a glass-on-glass tech-

nique using mosaic pieces to create a one-of-a-kind

art piece. Cost is $25 per person. Please sign up in

advance by calling the center.

The month of October is also a busy time for another

scary subject -- Medicare! Yes, this time of year is set

aside for open enrollment into Medicare Advantage

plans and Part D drug plans. This means, from Oct.

15 through Dec. 7, you can compare, review and

change plans. As a MMAP counselor, I can help you

review your current Medicare coverage and see what

if any changes are coming for 2017. A quick glance

can help you save money and help you understand

your coverage. Medicare has many rules and guide-

lines to follow, and I can help you navigate the sys-

tem. I require you to set up an appointment with me,

though, so I may have time to assist you. You can call

the center and set up an appointment with Kathy or

myself.

The kids are back in school, and winter is coming.

That also means that flu season is right around the

corner. The Delta/Menominee District Health Depart-

ment will host its annual Flu Shot Clinic at our center

Oct. 20. They will begin at 8:30 a.m. and take a break

for lunch and then return from 1-2 p.m. Please call

the center to schedule your appointment. You will

need to bring with you your Medicare Cards as the flu

shot is a benefit of your Medicare part B.

Although Halloween is on a Monday this year, we are

going to celebrate it on Friday, Oct. 28. Our party will

begin about 11:30 a.m. We encourage you to come in

a costume. We will let you vote for “best costume”

and award a prize for the lucky winner. In addition,

anyone who comes in a costume (fall sweatshirts do

not count) will receive a door prize ticket for a chance

to win a creepy prize. Seating is limited, so sign up in

advance.

I am looking forward to the holiday season. It will be a

time of fun and friendship. We will have a Thanksgiv-

ing Dinner and Christmas Party. Remember that we

do have a bus to bring you to these events. It will

save on parking, and driving in poor weather is never

fun. Remember to call at least a day in advance for

your ride as slots get filled quickly.

I shall bid you farewell for now. Hope you stop by and

join us for a bite! Muhuahhaha. Of dinner of course.

Until next month….Stay spooky!

MEDICARE MINUTES

Renelle Betters

MMAP Counselor

Phone: (906) 863-2158

Every year, Medicare beneficiaries are allowed to

compare and if need be change their Medicare Ad-

vantage Plans and also Part D drug plans. This

event is called the “Open Enrollment Period”. Bene-

ficiaries have from October 15th through December

7th to compare and enroll into new plans. These

new plans will begin on January 1, 2017.

Plans can change from year to year as far as cover-

age of drugs, and also premium costs. Information

about any changes to your current coverage should

have been mailed to you so that you are aware of

the changes for 2017. Some plans get discontinued

altogether. So, paying attention to the mail is very

important this time of year.

If you are fine with your current coverage, and you

don’t receive any information from your plan that

needs attention, then you don’t have to do any-

thing. The plan will renew you automatically.

For many of you though, a second look can save

you money in 2017. While your plan is good now, it

could change or you could save even more by just

switching pharmacies or even going mail order. I

can compare all of that for you and explain it to you.

If you would like me to assist you, please contact

the center and set up an appointment. You will be

asked to bring with you your red/white/blue Medi-

care card and a list of your current medications with

dosages. This enables me to do a personalized

search when comparing plans for you.

For those who are still struggling with the Blue

Cross Blue Shield Legacy issue, I can give you infor-

mation to help you shop around for other Medigap

plans. There could be some help for some of you if

you are eligible for the subsidy they are offering

with some plans. The starting date to apply for the

subsidy is Oct. 1. The deadline to apply for the sub-

sidy will be Dec. 15th. This subsidy money will only

be available until it runs out. They are so far going

to accept applications online, via phone, or by

printed paper. Please contact me for an appoint-

ment if you would like to know more about these

issues.

Creating Confident

Caregivers Workshop

Creating Confident Caregivers is a

new program in select regions of

Michigan for family caregivers of

persons with dementia or memory loss. It is a six-

session workshop led by trained dementia care spe-

cialists. This university tested program provides par-

ticipants with information, skills, and attitudes to

manage stress and increase their effectiveness as a

caregiver.

Creating Confident Caregivers is once again avail-

able in Menominee through a federal grant from the

U.S. Administration on Aging to the Michigan Office

of Services to the Aging and U.P. Area Agency on Ag-

ing/UPCAP. There is no charge for these sessions

and all materials are provided. In addition, Respite

care while attending the sessions may be available

through participating agencies while caregivers at-

tend the workshop.

The next Creating Confident Caregivers workshop

starts Nov. 2nd in Menominee. If you are interested

in participating in this workshop, please contact UP-

CAP at 1-800-305-8137. You can also visit UPCAP

on the web at www.upcap.org.

The information you need to apply for the subsidy

includes a copy of your current Medigap card, proof

of income, and proof that you live in Michigan such

as a driver’s license or state ID as this is for Michi-

gan residents only. They will review your application

and ensure that your monthly income is within the

guidelines. This may take several weeks, but they

will notify you via mail if you qualify for the subsidy

or not. Contact me if you need assistance.

Household income guidelines for the

Medigap subsidy:

1 person ....................................................... $17,820

2 people ....................................................... $24,030

If you qualify, here is what your

monthly subsidy could be:

Age 65-75 ............................................................ $40

Over age 75 ......................................................... $65

Under age 65 with a disability ......................... $125

Halloween is Monday, Oct. 31. Enjoy the

wonderful season of fall. The trees are so

beautiful, and the air smells so fresh. You

can always get that certain smell when the

leaves are on the ground. Winter is on the

way, so enjoy this season while it lasts.

Autumn is a second spring ,

when every leaf is a flower.

A Happier Outlook

It may surprise some, but studies show seniors are

among the happiest groups of people, and they are

significantly more happy than their middle-aged

counterparts. The author of a recent study on the

subject, Dr. Saverio Stranges, says, “This could be

due to better coping abilities. Older people tend to

have internal mechanisms to deal better with hard-

ship or negative circumstances than those who are

younger.” Another reason seniors may also be hap-

pier is because age means that they are “more com-

fortable being themselves.”

MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT – REVIEW

YOUR PLAN AND SAVE MONEY!

Each year, Medicare drug and health plans change

what they cost and what they cover. The annual en-

rollment period for Medicare prescription drug and

health plans is Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. Now is the time for

people with Medicare to review changes in their cur-

rent plan and compare it to other plans to make

sure whatever plan they choose meets your needs.

Those who don’t have prescription drug coverage

can also enroll in a drug plan during open enroll-

ment. All people in Medicare should:

∗ Review the 2017 costs for your current drug

plan. (look at new premium, co-pays and de-

ductibles in your 2017 Annual Notice of Change

which you should've received at the end of Sep-

tember). Will your plan still cover the medication

you need in 2017?

∗ Compare the cost and coverage to other plans in

your area. Check to see if the plan covers your

medicines, works with your pharmacy and doc-

tors, and covers the services you need.

∗ Choose a plan that meets your needs, and saves

you money!

Review your plan and act early (no later than Dec. 7)

to avoid any inconvenience at the pharmacy counter

in January. Ask me -- I can help! I would be glad to

help you compare plans. Give me a call at 753-

6986. I am a well-trained MMAP counselor and pro-

vide assistance and counseling at no charge.

Exercise Class Sit and Get Fit Exercise class is held every Tuesday

from 10-11 a.m. These low-impact exercises are de-

signed to strengthen muscles and improve balance.

Volunteer leader is Clyde Thoune.

CSFP RECERTIFICATION PROCESS We will be starting the annual CSFP recertification

process soon. Please recertify Oct. 3-7 or Oct. 10-

14. Please come on one of these designated days

from 9-11 a.m. or 1-2 p.m.

Needed in order to recertify:

∗ Names, dates of birth and Social Security num-

bers for anyone in the household

∗ The GROSS monthly income for everyone resid-

ing in the household. Social Security, pension,

annuity, retirement payments or employment

income. ALL social security recipients receive a

1099 form in the beginning of the year that

shows their income before any deductions. We

CANNOT accept a bank statement as income

verification. We CANNOT deduct your Part B

(physician services) premiums but we CAN de-

duct Part D (drug plan) premiums if you have a

Part D plan to help bring your income under

the eligibility limits. Proof of Part D insurance is

required. No other deductions are allowed.

Once you have been determined eligible, you will

receive a eligibility card to verify your participation

in the CSFP program. Each qualified senior who is

age 60 or older will receive one box. Please bring

this card with you to each distribution. You MUST

be recertified to participate in the October 18th

distribution.
