After 12 years in school, we’ve finally reached the end of our journey, which we celebrate on Graduation Day.

It’s exciting to real-ize how large of an ac-complishment this is. We deserve to be proud.

But honestly, it’s a little bittersweet.

Our lives as we know them are changing. We’ll be around new people and places, be forced to be our own advocates and maybe even start financially supporting ourselves.

Graduation marks the end of our childhood and opens the door for so many new op-portunities and experiences.

One of the most impor-tant things for us right now is to learn to communicate, to establish your confidence.

It’s not that there aren’t people still supporting and pushing you, but they won’t necessarily offer help and

advice without being asked. In high school, we see the

same people every day, so we’re forced to be together and it’s easier to connect and interact with peers and teachers, but once we graduate, it’s up to us to make sure we keep the connec-tions we need in order to be successful and happy.

However, a common misconception is that once we graduate, we become adults. Suddenly, we’re on our own.

But, we’re not adults. Not yet, at least.

Just because we are legally considered adults doesn’t mean we are ready to act alone.

Even though college gives you freedom and respon-sibility, it’s still guided.

College is a built in time for young adults to learn to be successful while living on our own. It’s a buffer region.

Despite thinking we

know everything, we re-ally still know noth-ing about adulthood.

We have responsibilities now, but college is a time where we can learn to handle and manage those responsi-bilities in an appropriate way.

And as we go into adulthood, realize that every connection counts.

This is a transitional period, so don’t burn bridges.

Connect with as many people as you can before you leave, because you never know where you’ll need con-nections down the road.

Tell a girl you don’t know that her dress is pretty, or tell a freshman on the baseball team that he has great potential.

You never know when you’ll need the help of that person down the road.

It’s unnecessary to become attached to these people, but interacting and being pres-

ent are really important in the remaining time left.

It’s simple networking. Don’t waste possible

connections, just because you’re “waiting” for college.

Don’t wait to interact with others because you think you’re never go-ing to see them again.

It may be true that you won’t see these people again, but it’s not worth it to waste a helping hand.

Graduation marks the beginning of a chapter.

However, we need to keep in mind that although we are starting a new chapter, the old ones aren’t erased.

People see college as “starting over.” We should really learn to see it as a progression though.

We’re building and improving on ourselves and our current lives, not disconnecting ourselves from them completely.
