Special Thank you to MetMedia – The Student Voice of MSU Denver

“When first presented with the idea of working with the Colorado Senior Lobby for

Senior Day at the Capitol, there were some hesitations. Were the topics that were to

be discussed relevant to college students? Would we be welcomed at the event as

college kids? And, would we be able to do what was being asked of us? …”

And now we are entering our 3rd Year of Working with MetMedia!

Thank you MetMedia, MSU, and all the Talented Students working on Senior Day at the Capitol 2019!

What is Lifelong Colorado?

The idea behind Lifelong Colorado is to build on AARP’s Age Friendly Community initiative and make Colorado the “age-friendliest” state – a place full of age-friendly commu-nities, neighborhoods, streets, businesses, places of wor-ship, organizations, parks, recreation facilities and more.

WHAT IS AN AARP AGE- FRIENDLY COMMUNITY?

It is a community that is safe and secure, has affordable and appropriate housing and transportation options, and has supportive community features and services. Once in place, those resources enhance personal independence; allow residents to age in place; and foster residents’ en-gagement in the community’s civic, economic, and social life.

Wrapped inside this definition are eight “domains of livabil-ity,” which are flexible for communities’ adaptation but provide a framework:

• Outdoor Spaces and Buildings

• Transportation

• Housing

• Social Participation

• Respect and Social Inclusion

• Civic Participation and Employment

• Communication and Information

• Community and Health Services

WHY BECOME AN AGE-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY?

• Encourages local residents, policymakers, business-es, and other stakeholder groups to plan their future through an age-friendly lens.

• Provides connections to state, national and global networks of participating communities as well as aging and civil society experts

• Provides access to news, information and guidance about best practices, models, results and challenges in the age-friendly movement

• Presents more opportunities for partnership with other communities and state agencies.

• Provides mentoring, assessments and peer review evaluation by experts and member cities and towns

• Recognition by the State of Colorado and AARP of the community’s commitment to become more age-friendly.

ARE THERE COMMUNITIES IN COLORADO THAT HAVE ALREADY

JOINED THE AARP AGE-FRIENDLY NETWORK?

YES: Boulder County

Colorado Springs

Denver

Eagle County

Strategic Action Planning Group on Aging (SAPGA) - What is SAPGA?

The Colorado General Assembly and the Governor formed the Strategic Action Planning Group on Aging with passage and signage of House Bill 15-1033 in 2015 (key provisions, and fiscal note). The planning group is charged with examining the impact of the shifting aging demographic on the economy, workforce, businesses, market based products and services; state and local revenue budgets and fiscal policies; Medicaid and other safety-net programs and the collateral impact on other non-related state programs; family caregiving and pub-lic and private options for long-term care, services and support; federal entitlement reforms; and transporta-tion services and infrastructure. Meetings are open to the public, and Coloradans can get all the news from the planning group by signing up.

The Planning Group will develop a comprehensive long-term strategic plan, as well as recommending specific ac-tions and bills to the General Assembly that:

• Best manage the impact of this demographic shift on the state of Colorado

• Improve the long-term quality and effectiveness of outcome-based services by government, nonprofit organizations and the private sector

• Ensure adequate and sustainable funding and spend-ing strategies for Medicaid and other state and local programs

Colorado Commission on Aging

The Colorado Commission on Aging (CCOA) was estab-lished under the authority of the Older Coloradans Act (C.R.S. Sections 26- 11-100.1 to 26-11-106) to serve as the primary advisory body on all matters affecting older persons. The CCOA is a volunteer organization of seven-teen people appointed by the Governor and approved by the Senate committee to serve for four-year terms. There are two members appointed to each of the seven Congressional Districts, and members representing that district may not be from the same political party. In ad-dition to the fourteen members there is one at-large Commissioner, and one member each of different par-ties from the State Senate and House.

Commissioners' duties include:

• Conducting, and encourage others to conduct, stud-ies of problems of the state’s older people

• Assisting government and private agencies to coor-dinate their efforts on behalf of the aging and older adults in order that efforts are effective and non-duplicative

• Promoting and aiding in the establishment of local programs and services for Colorado's aging and old-er adults

• Conducting promotional activities and programs for public education on problems of the aging

• Reviewing existing programs for the aging and mak-ing recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly for improvements

Are you looking to get involved with senior services locally?

We are Streaming this Event!

The Colorado Commission on Aging (CCOA) was established under the authority of the Older Coloradans Act (C.R.S. Sections 26- 11-100.1 to 26-11-106) to serve as the primary advisory body on all matters affecting older persons in the state of Colorado. At a local level there are “Senior Commissions” in Colorado that residents and professionals can apply to serve on or just attend their meetings. These local “Senior Commissions” provide valuable local community input on their community’s senior services.

These organizations are most often organized at the county level. Citizens can apply to be on the commission and provide advocacy on senior issues in the community plus address concerns, and issues of older adults in their neighborhood. Being on a local “Senior commission” is a good way to give input on senior services in your community and in the state.

Note that local “Senior Commissions” can go by different names. To find your local “senior commission” call your local Area Agency on Aging* or do a Google search with your county or city, and the phrase “senior commission”. Below are just a few of these organizations:
