THE STORY SO FAR

Who are we?

Senior Citizens Bangalore is an elders’ NGO that contributes its

members experience, expertise, time and money for the benefit of society as a whole.

How did it start?

Four retirees, in a conversation over tea, shared ideas on how

to repay their debt to society for the numerous benefits they had enjoyed over the years through their careers.


And then? Opportunity knocked. They saw a group of children trudging back

from school, all of them barefoot. “We can provide them shoes,” said one of the retirees. And so was born Senior Citizens Bangalore.

Why are we … different?

All members are retired senior citizens and they find the

time (and still have a lot of energy) to dedicate themselves to the cause.


So, what is the cause?

Our mission is two pronged:

– provide education and food to underprivileged children to make them employable and to stay healthy.

– Create support homes for the elderly and destitute members of society.


What have we done so far?

SCHOOLS

• 10 Schools with over 2000 under-privileged children, starting from Junior classes managed by different Trusts.

• We provide amenities to improve attendance by helping with need-based transportation; Free nutritious health drink; Iron-fortified biscuits; Hygienic lunches; Shoes, Uniforms, and some financial support.



• We’ve made steps to improve the quality of education by; Computer-aided audio Visual Education; providing Teachers' Training; Sports and extra-curricular activities; Scholarships to deserving children and special scholarships to girls in collaboration with Leora Trust; Vocational and skill based Training; Collaborating with RBANMS Trust and UNNATI to provide vocational guidance and job assurance to those seeking immediate employment.


What have we done so far? • We have ensured that wherever possible there are hygienic and

clean toilets; Study-table fans; Installation of Aqua-guard for clean drinking water.

• The children’s overall health is looked into by periodic General Health Check ups; Ophthalmological Tests are conducted and specs supplied if needed; Dental hygiene, checkups and treatment provided and provision of free toothbrushes.



HUMANITARIAN HOME FOR DESTITUTES Supported by Senior Citizens Bangalore, located at Hennur, Bangalore run by RVM Trust

• The Home provides shelter, food, clothing, and comfort to the aged, discarded, destitute, homeless and the poorest of the poor; SCB built the Physiotherapy Centre and furnishes medical supplies, clothes, beds and other essentials; Solar Water heating system and bore well water; Clean toilets; Medicines.

• Kitchen garden activities to keep the members occupied.



RURAL UPLIFTMENT

• In the Hoskote Taluk there has been support to 3 Anganwadis in Villages feeding 200 kids, also expectant and lactating mothers; Support to a High School for girls and a P.U. College; Promotion of Science Education especially Girl Students; Improvement and support to infrastructure in the above institutions.


What do we want…in the future?

• To continue paying back to society.

• Some of the more specific things we would like to tackle in the immediate future are -

- Start a skill development centre;

- Cover more institutions for underprivileged children;

- Organise more scholarships for graduates and postgraduate students;

- Spread the message on the benefits of organ donation;

- Create civic and hygiene awareness possibly through music and theatre.

• As part of their CSR, institutions and trusts are looking for social organisations that are doing genuine and productive work at a grassroots level.

• We would like to encourage you to review all the good work we at SCB are doing and consider us while making donations as part of your company’s CSR movement.

As you know, all contributions made to the society from Indian donators are eligible for tax benefits under section 80 G of the Income tax Act and it has been given clearance by the government for receiving Forex contributions as well.
