SENIOR B

Valley Rovers 2.08 V Blackrock 1.10

Our senior B girl contested their second consecutive

county final on Sunday, going into the game as the

underdogs. Valley Rovers started the brighter with Orla

Deasy opening the scoring with a point and Susan

O’Leary added to this with a pointed free before

Blackrock opened their account after five minutes.

Blackrock added a goal shortly after to give them the

lead after twelve minutes before both teams

exchanged points twice. Valley Rovers had goal

chances throughout the half, but the Blackrock

defence stood strong. Blackrock added further points

on the stroke of halftime to put Blackrock four points

clear at halftime on a score line of Blackrock 1-5 Valley

Rovers 0-4.

On the resumption and playing with the aid of the

breeze Valley Rovers once again hit the ground running

and Katie Lynch hand passed the ball to the Blackrock

net within two minutes to reduce the margin to the

minimum. There was little between the teams over the

course of hour and Blackrock extended their lead to

three again through two pointed frees after ten

minutes of second half. In the following ten minute

period Valleys narrowed the gap to two points

outscoring Blackrock three points to two. Following a

good passage of play involving a number of the Valleys

attack, Valleys were awarded a penalty when Susan

O’Leary was grounded in the square. The resulting

penalty was saved, in the aftermath Susan O’Leary was

fouled again and she pointed the resulting free to leave

the deficit at the minimum with just four minutes of

normal time remaining. With just one minute of

normal time remaining 2016’s leading scorer Eileen

Foley rifled the ball to the Blackrock net after gathering

a Susan O’Leary forty-five which had rebounded off the

post to put Valley Rovers in front for the first time

since the opening minutes of the game.

In injury time Blackrock tried vigorously to bridge the

gap, but the Valley Rovers defence were holding strong

as a unit with trojan work from all. Blackrock were

limited to just a point in the sixth minute of injury

time, before John Horgan blew for full time. The full

time score was Valley Rovers 2-8 Blackrock 1-10.

Jennifer Murphy was named player of the match with

an outstanding performance in defence.

Valley Rovers will now play Senior A camogie for 2018, a

new adventure for all but that’s something to saviour

over the winter months. Valley Rovers Camogie would

like to thank to everyone who played their part within

the club along the way to get Valley Rovers to Senior A

status, not just this year but over the years in making this

bunch of girls what they have become. And a special

thanks this year’s management Mark Prendergast and

our own Mary Crowley (who has been involved in the

club from day one all of 30 years ago)

ADULT CLUB

UNDER 21 HURLING

Having defeated Ballinhassig in the first round our

u21 hurlers were drawn to meet Glen Rovers in the

last 16 of the u21 Premier hurling championship in

Pairc Ui Rinn on Thurs Oct 26th. Conditions were

damp and foggy on the night and the Valleys started

slowly with the Glen hitting 4 points without reply in

the first 10 minutes. However the lads soon settled

to their task and brought themselves back into the

game going in at half time level with the Glen on 7pts

each. In the second half Valleys upped the tempo

and took some smart scores to lead by 0-14 to 0-10

after 50 mins. A well taken goal by Valleys put

further daylight between them and their city

opponents and with a couple of minutes left in

Page 4: SENIOR B CAMOGIE COUNTY CHAMPIONSsportlomo-userupload.s3.amazonaws.com/uploaded/galleries/7559_… · further daylight between them and their city opponents and with a couple of minutes

normal time Valleys were ahead 1-15 to 0-12. However

a resilient Glen Rovers side fought back and struck for 2

late goals after some panicked defending from Valleys

and a couple of close in frees. With the sides level after

full time we headed for extra time with the momentum

now seemingly with Glen Rovers.

However the Valleys lads refused to buckle and stayed

with the Glen during the first period of extra time. In

the second period of extra time the lads show real

resolve and tagged on the all-important scores to win

by 1-21 to 2-16 after an epic contest. Obviously this was

a great win but Valleys will be disappointed they left

Glen Rovers back into the match in the last couple of

minutes of normal time. Further improvement will be

needed as we now await the winners of Douglas v

Charleville in the next round.

JUVENILE

MINOR

On Tuesday 24th Oct Valley Rovers U18 footballers

played Ilen Rovers in the semi final of the Premier 2A

Championship. On a wet night both teams started

tentatively, Valleys settled and had registered 1-01 to

no score after 15 minutes, the goal scored by Jack

Crowley, it was 1-03 to 0-01 after 21 minutes, with

Cathal Manning adding another goal on the 22nd

minute, Valleys extended their lead to 2-07 to 0-03 at

half time.

Ilen scored the first two points of the second half and

after 47 minutes valleys lead 2-10 to 0-07. Valleys

substitutes made the desired impacts when

introduced and we scored another 4 goals in the final

10 minutes before Conor Hurley scored a long range

point to leave the final score Valley Rovers 6-11 to

Ilen Rovers 0-10.

This was a very good team performance with Conor

Hurley and Jack Crowley leading from the front and

everybody making a positive contribution.

We now face Kilshannig on Sat 4th Nov in the final.

Valleys U16 P2 footballers travelled to Glanmire to

play their league semi-final last Wednesday night.

Glanmire started brightly and took the game to

Valleys leading by 5 points after 15 mins. A valleys goal

prior to half time kept the score line ticking over but went

into the break behind on a score line 1-10 to 1-2. Glanmire

kept up the pressure and only for three outstanding saves

from Denny Kiely the game would have been out of reach.

Glanmire led by 6 point entering the closing stages only

for valleys to hit the post and the crossbar in the last few

minutes the game could have gone any way. Glanmire

held out to win on a score line of 1-15 to 1-9.

Valleys U16 C3 footballers travelled to Ballincollig last

Thursday night to play Ballincollig in the C3 championship.

Valleys started well and kicked a number of good scores.

Goals from Jason Cronin, Adam Walsh Murphy and Eoin

O’Sullivan had valleys leading 3-14 to 0-1 at half time.

Ballincollig were missing a number of players due to U15

championship the following night. Valleys kept up the

pressure in the second half with some excellent scores

from play and frees. Valleys ran out comfortable winners

on a score line of 3-25 to 0-1. Valleys now meet

Carrigaline in the final.

Our u12 hurlers qualified to play Carrigtwohill in the

P1 hurling final. Having lost the toss for venue.

We travelled to Carrigtwohill on Monday Oct 23rd

to play under lights in front of a large home

attendance. Our lads started slowly and were

second best to their opponents in the early stages.

However the lads soon settled into the match and

found themselves 3 points down at half time having

missed a couple goal opportunities. The second half

was a struggle for our lads and again we found it

difficult to get scores. Carrigtwohill on the other

hand found scores easier to come by and a few late

scores flattered them on the score board.

The final score was 3-08 to 1-03. Overall it was a

disappointing finish to the year for these lads but

no doubt they will learn from it and come back

stronger in the coming years. They had an

outstanding run in the league winning 9 of their 11

games to finish third and a great semi -final win

against Shandrum. Their attitude at training and

matches throughout the year was excellent and

they deserve great credit for qualifying for a

Premier 1 hurling final.
