Each year the Malibu High School Administrative Leadership team selects a special

group of students to be recognized for their exceptional leadership, service, character, and

accomplishments. A perpetual plaque with their names will hang on the wall next to the

Principal’s office.

EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP RYAN BROWN

This award recognizes a student whose leadership has made a difference at Malibu High School

EXCEPTIONAL SCHOOL SERVICE ELIJAH ETTENGER, EVAN SCHOENBRUN

This award recognizes a student who serves at Malibu High School without seeking self -recognition.

EXCEPTIONAL COMMUNITY SERVICE SASHA HORN

This award recognizes a student for his or her outstanding community service.

This award recognizes a student who combines academic excellence and exemplary leadership.

THE MALIBU TIMES OUTSTANDING CITIZEN AWARD MAXWELL GORELICK, SARA MOHR

This award was established to acknowledge a student who demonstrates concern for the

rights and needs of others in his or her community. A feature article about the student

will appear in the Malibu Times Newspaper.

PRESIDENT’S EDUCATION AWARD PROGRAM

The President’s Education Awards Program, sponsored by the Office of the President of

the United States, recognized academic success in the classroom and school.

PRESIDENT’S AWARD FOR EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE

The President’s Award for Education Excellence recognizes students who achieved a

cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher and a combined SAT Reasoning score of

1800 or above or an ACT score of 27 or above.

AMERICAN LEGION PALISADES POST #283

The American Legion recognizes that one of the greatest gifts a person can receive is the

gift of knowledge. Each year the American Legion provides through its Posts financial

aid to students hoping to further their education and become contributing members of our

society.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF MALIBU YOUTH OF THE YEAR VIOLET MIEHLE

Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls club member can

receive. The title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school,

community and the Boys & Girls Club, as well as overcoming personal challenges and

obstacles.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB OF MALIBU MOST INSPIRATIONAL SENIOR MARVIN ALVARADO

Awarded annually to an outstanding senior who inspires their school, community and the

Boys & Girls Club, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles through

their positive attitude, tenacity, and kindness towards others.

CABBY CABALLERO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP DAVID GONZALEZ

This scholarship is given by Brendan Sindell and Candy Sindell, in honor of his

grandfather and her dad, Cabby Caballero. He was a very generous man and a firm

believer in hard work and making the most of life’s opportunities. Five of Cabby’s

grandsons have attended Malibu High School.

CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION GOLD SEAL BEARERS

Gold Seal Bearers are students who have earned membership in CSF four semesters

during their 10th

through 12th

grades, including one semester during their senior year.

They are recognized by wearing special gold cords during graduation and by having a

gold seal placed on their diploma.

CARING INDIVIDUAL AWARD SASHA HORN

Given by Primary Caring of Malibu, a local medical practice, whose mission is to help

bring the human connection back to medicine. It is their desire to encourage the efforts

of kind and compassionate students who may be interested in pursuing a career in the

healing arts.

COACH LAWSON GRIDIRON SCHOLARSHIPS SAADIQ HASSAN, MATTHEW MASON

These scholarships are given by the Flamminio family to students who have demonstrated the

same characteristics, on and off the football field, as the man for whom these scholarships are

named. These characteristics are integrity, loyalty, determination, discipline and selflessness.

DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION MALIBU CHAPTER

GOOD CITIZEN AWARD TENAYA DRAPKIN

The DAR, founded in 1890, is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women's service

organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and

securing America's future through better education for children. The DAR Good Citizens

program and scholarship contest is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of

good citizenship.

DORN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP MARVIN ALVARADO

This award is given to an individual who has shown outstanding leadership and initiative

in youth mentorship and has made long lasting contributions in the creation of positive

Club environment. This individual embodies the elements of a leader through strength of

character, team effort and honor when dealing with adversity. Through enthusiasm and

industriousness this person has fulfilled his/her potential as a Club member and is

continuing his/her journey to succeed as a caring, productive and contributing citizen.

DUSTY PEAK ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP HAYDEN KESSENICH

Dusty Peak, a true environmental leader, died at the young age of 58. He and his family

lived in Malibu since 1959. Dusty was the first Student Body President of Malibu Park

Junior High School. As an adult, he was a passionate advocate for clean ocean water, at

his beloved Little Dume Beach and the rest of Malibu. He was a member of Heal the

Bay and recently worked diligently on the Marine Preserve Issue for the coastline. He

was always “scouting” issues and encouraging others to be involved. He served many

years as a board member of Malibu Riviera #2. He is greatly missed.

ELLEN FRANCISCO EQUESTRIAN SCHOLARSHIP TATIANA COSENTINO

Ellen and Kent Francisco were both physical education teachers at Santa Monica High

School. They continue to support Malibu youth with their athletic scholarships.

EXCEPTIONAL EFFORT GRANT JAMES DE LUNA

This grant is given by David, Shelley & Andrew Kramer to a student who has shown an

exceptional work ethic and a strong desire to learn, succeed, and improve themselves

through the years.

FLAMMINIO FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP ZACHARY HAMILTON

This scholarship is given by the Flamminio family to a student who excels in the performing arts.

HENRY CARIATI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP GUSTAVO MALDONADO

This scholarship is given by the Ground Zero Advertising Agency. Henry Cariati was a

caring and dedicated teacher, who had a keen interest and talent in the creative as well as

the technical side of the arts. Henry’s wife, Jeanne, was a teacher at MHS. Both their

daughter and son attended Malibu Park Junior High School.

HOLLAND-PORTER THEATRICAL SCHOLARSHIPS REN MARTINEZ, CHARLOTTE VAN IERLAND

This scholarship is awarded to students who have been involved with the performing arts

throughout their high school career and will continue to pursue it in college in theatre,

music or the arts.

JUAN CABRILLO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP MIRANDA BARD

The Juan Cabrillo PTA is a strong supporter of its children and teachers. It continues this

support by awarding a scholarship to one of their alumni.

JUSTIN HELMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ELIJAH ETTENGER

Justin Helman, Class of ’03, will always be remembered for his kind spirit, gentle heart

and easy going personality. From the time he was a young boy, he pursued his dream of

becoming an entrepreneur. He resisted following the conventional path and worked hard

and was well on his way to realizing the goal he had set for himself. This scholarship is

given to a student who exemplifies and reflects the essence of Justin’s beautiful spirit.

KENT AND ELLEN FRANCISCO ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP BRANDON TRAN

The Kiwanis Club of Malibu is a service organization that provides for its many

charitable endeavors by its famous fundraiser, the Labor Day Chili Cook-Off. The

Kiwanis Club of Malibu sponsors the MHS Key Club.

KIWANIS CLUB OF MALIBU SHARK AWARDS FOR SCHOLAR ATHLETES GREGORY BOGIE, SARA MOHR

The Kiwanis Club of Malibu is a service organization that provides for its many

charitable endeavors by its famous fundraiser, the Labor Day Chili Cook-Off. This

scholarship is given to college-bound outstanding scholar-athletes.

MALIBU ART ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIPS TRIANA GARCIA, MEGAN WALCH

The Malibu Art Association, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1963, and is

dedicated to art appreciation and education. The association supports, develops, and

inspires the arts, and is involved with the community, promoting art appreciation and

education. In an effort to launch young artists, they provide scholarships to graduating

Seniors who plan to continue their education in the field of art.

MALIBU HIGH SCHOOL PTSA SCHOLARSHIPS SARAH CORRIGAN, DAVIS THACKER

The Malibu High School PTSA has raised money to provide support for the school and

its students’ needs. Their efforts and support of the students and teachers of Malibu High

are endless.

MALIBU HIGH SCHOOL PTSA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

HONORING FRANK PAGE CODY PHILLIPS

Frank Page served for five years as the Malibu High School ASB accountant, athletic

secretary and as a coach for the cross-country, track and men’s soccer teams. His fierce

loyalty, dedication to his athletes and love for MHS is honored through this scholarship.

MALIBU HIGH SCHOOL PTSA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

HONORING LOUIS LEITHOLD PARKER PHILLIPS

Louis Letihold loved calculus and he loved teaching. Those who were privileged to have

him as a teacher shared and became a part of the passion he had for both. He touched

countless lives both as a high school teacher and a teacher of teachers.

MALIBU JEWISH CENTER & SYNAGOGUE SCHOLARSHIP

IN MEMORY OF ORI GREENBERG TBD

The Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue places a high value on education. Their

continuing interest in education is evidenced by this scholarship in memory of Ori

Greenberg, who was a member of Malibu High School’s first graduating class in 1996.

MALIBU SPECIAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION

STUDENT OF THE YEAR SCHOLARSHIP STEFFAN EDENHOLM

The Malibu Special Education Foundation Student of the Year Scholarship is awarded in

memory of Annie Crenshaw, who, as a Special Educator in Malibu for many years,

displayed hard work, dedication, a great heart for our kids and a wonderful sense of

humor. This award is given to a graduating Senior at Malibu High School who will serve

as an example to the general population that postsecondary success is possible with hard

work and a desire to learn.

MALIBU SPECIAL EDUCATION FOUNDATION TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP VIOLET MIEHLE

The Malibu Special Education Foundation Student of the Year Scholarship is awarded in

memory of Annie Crenshaw, who, as a Special Educator in Malibu for many years,

displayed hard work, dedication, a great heart for our kids and a wonderful sense of

humor. This award is given to a graduating Senior at Malibu High School who is entering

the field of teaching.

MALIBU SURFSIDE NEWS JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP CAROLINE KAUFMAN

This award is earmarked for students who are interested in pursuing a career in

communications with an emphasis on political process, public policy and social justice

issues. There currently is a preponderance of journalism students interested in covering

light features, entertainment and sports; but addressing the more complex underpinnings

of democracy and civil rights is in need of much greater attention.

MALIBU WOMAN’S CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS

The Malibu Woman’s Club is an organization that raises funds in order to give annual

scholarships to Malibu youth. They also sponsor an essay contest for 5th

graders. It is the

desire of this organization to reward students who are creative and independent thinkers.

MICHAEL K ZWEIG MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS ERIKA WOOLLER, GILLIAN WOOLLER

This scholarship is presented in memory of Michael Zweig, former Optimist Club

President, Malibu Little League Commissioner and MHS Assistant Softball Coach.

Quite the optimist himself, Michael dedicated himself to Malibu athletics with fun and

light-heartedness. He was happiest coaching his three MHS alum daughters, Megan,

Casey and Sarah. This scholarship represents the positive and humorous spirit that

Michael brought to athletics and the community. Ultimately, the meaning that we

discover in life comes as a result of our relationships with others. Michael passed away

March 21, 2011 from cancer.

MALIBU’S JUNIOR MISS SCHOLARSHIPS SOPHIA GALATE, SARA MOHR, ALISSA MYER

America’s Junior Miss is a nationwide opportunity designed to empower and reward

excellence and achievement by providing scholarships and life-learning experiences.

Junior Misses are characterized by scholastic achievement, community involvement,

creativity and the quest for excellence in every facet of life.

The Optimist Club’s main goal is to support Malibu youth. They raise money at the

Malibu Jazz Festival and at the Optimist Club Pancake Breakfast. They recognize and

honor Malibu High School students with their charitable giving through these

scholarships.

PAT CAIRNS DOLPHIN SCHOLARSHIP ALMA FELIPE

Pat Cairns served as principal of Juan Cabrillo Elementary School and Assistant Principal

of Malibu High School. She was a teacher of middle and high school English, AP English,

history and home economics. Pat was a District Teacher of the Year and a California

State Teacher of the Year Finalist. When Pat retired, the Juan Cabrillo PTA established a

fund in her name to provide scholarships for former Juan Cabrillo students. In

remembrance of Emily Shane, a special Cabrillo student.

POINT DUME MARINE SCIENCE SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP HANNAH STEVENS

The PTA of Point Dume Marine Science Elementary School gives this scholarship to a

student who attended their school.

RETA AND REEVES TEMPLEMAN SCHOLARSHIP TBD

This scholarship is given to an aspiring writer in memory of Reta and Reeves Templeman,

the founders of The Malibu Times.

ROBERT AYERS III MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP MAXWELL GORELICK

Given by Geralyn Krieger and the Ayers family in memory of Robert who graduated

from MHS in 2003. His patriotism and love of music was shown through his service in

the army. Sgt. Ayers was killed during his second tour of duty in Baghdad while

protecting his unit from attack in September 2007. He received the Bronze Star and the

Purple Heart.

ROB LEMOND AQUATIC SPORTS SCHOLARSHIP KRISTOFOR KALIAKIN

Rob LeMond teaches ocean and pool swimming to the children of Malibu and is a strong

supporter of water safety and water sports. He has taught thousands of children in Malibu how

to swim.

ROTARY CLUB OF MALIBU SCHOLARSHIPS ELIZABETH HUMPHREYS, RACHAEL KRAFT

The Rotary Club of Malibu is a major service organization that supports education. These

awards are presented to students who are good citizens and role models for others.

SALLY ETEBARI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP MARVIN ALVARADO

This scholarship is given in memory of Sally Etebari, loving mother of Aleah, Class

of ’02. She was trained as a teacher and encouraged all aspects of education. Sally was a

The Santa Monica-Malibu Council of PTA is the combined organization of all the

PTA/PTSA organizations in the school district. The Council provides this scholarship to

These scholarships are given by the Sean Michael Matthews Memorial Scholarship Fund

in memory of Sean Michael Matthews, second son of Michael Matthews and Kelley

Didion, to students who reflect Sean’s qualities of humor, independence, optimism and a
