Sengo enables the automation of any HbbTV app with minimum effort using the well deployed Selenium test framework.

In TVs and STBs, the browser environment is secure and does not allow access standard HTML test frameworks and tools to be used. Sengo intercepts the HbbTV app, and using a minimally-intrusive test agent, allows your test script to send remote control events and inspect the UI accordingly.

Sengo is founded on the philisophy that HbbTV application testing should not be about tedious, error-prone manual testing and proprietary tools. It should focus on automation which is based on industry standard frameworks and tools. By using the Selenium test framework, Selenium scripts for non-TV HTML app platforms can be easily imported for TV based HbbTV app testing. Sengo is simple to install, and the only hardware required is a modulator to play the required HbbTV broadcast stream. It is quick and cheap to get started with a number of sample test scripts provided, making it the ideal HbbTV app testing tool for developers. Sengo’s client-server architecture means that the TV under test can be physically anywhere, allowing global access.

HbbTV applications are typically executed on a wide range of retail devices which are not controlled or supplied by the TV operator or broadcaster. As the number of HbbTV devices proliferates, the potential for interoperability issues increases exponentially. Testing HbbTV apps on a wide range of devices is expensive and slow. At present, either app developers use slow and error-prone manual testing, or large investments must be made in rack-based automation kits with screen capture technology.
