Discover SenegaTe French coast o West A rica awaits y

Although relatively new to British holidaymakers,Senegal has long been a avourite holiday destination

or our European neighbours who, or many years, have enjoyed the year-round warm welcome andsandy beaches o this unique and beauti ul country.

Senegal sits on the Atlantic Ocean, at A rica’s most westerly point betweenMali, Guinea-Bissau and Mauritania, with The Gambia almost entirely

enclosed within it. It has three mighty rivers and these provide a good dealo ertile land and some wonder ully intricate coastal lagoons and waterways

that are a joy to explore. Because o this abundance o water and ertility itsupports a great wealth o wildli e, including numerous birds rom coastal

waders to large raptors, and various mammal species such as warthogs, monkeys, manatees and dolphins.

Senegal’s people and its cultureSome might argue that Senegal’s greatest attraction is its thriving culture,

which draws rom centuries o the region’s tribal history and also themany incursions rom outside cultures, including the French who were thedominant imperial power here during the 19th and 20th centuries until

independence in 1960. This myriad o in uences has used into an eclectic whole, which you can see in the local dress, music, cuisine and architecture. Many o the ethnic groups o The Gambia and Senegal are related, so sharemany customs and indigenous languages and, as in The Gambia, visitorsshould adopt an in ormal but modest standard o dress as the majority o Senegalese are Muslim. You are guaranteed a warm welcome rom them, as

they adhere to the traditional values o respect or others and good manners.

Language As Senegal is a ormer French colony, French is the o fcial language anda basic knowledge o the language would certainly be use ul. Generallyspeaking, in the resort areas, English isn’t widely spoken but hotel sta ,

particularly at reception, and tour reps will usually speak some English.O the local tribal languages, Wolo , Malinké, Mandinka and Fula are themost widely spoken.

Our Senegal hotels You will discover that Senegal o ers a range o excellent accommodation, with a number o luxury hotels, some with spa acilities, and propertiesgenerally provide a level o cuisine that is some o the fnest in West A rica.

Senegal has much to o er holidaymakers o all agesand tastes and we o er the choice o holidaying in

two di erent regions – Saly & La Somone and theSine Saloum Delta, 65 kilometres south o Saly.

RESOR AREAS

Senegal resort areasWhich resort to choose?Saly & La SomoneThe resort o Saly is located on the “Petite Côte”, approximately 80 kilometressouth o Dakar and 65 kilometres north o the Sine Saloum Delta. As well asbeing one o the most important fshing ports in Senegal, Saly is an ideal holidaydestination that has long been popular with French and Belgian tourists and assuch has a very established eel, with its variety o hotels, palm- ringed sandybeaches, calm clear waters, bars, restaurants, shops and a wide range o activities.

The smaller resort o La Somone is only a short drive rom Saly and enjoysan idyllic location beside a stunning lagoon, home to the Réserve de laSomone, a birdwatcher’s paradise. Nearby you can also visit the BandiaNature Reserve, a small but per ectly ormed wildli e park where you cansee roaming reely: gira e, rhino, zebra, ostrich, antelope, bu alo, bush pigs, impala and many other birds and animals. For the more active, both Saly andLa Somone have several excellent watersports centres, o ering a range o activities such as jet skis, water-skiing, catamarans, kayaks and windsurfng, and several excellent fshing clubs o ering world class deep sea fshing. Quadand buggy tours or horse treks are available in and around the resorts andSaly is home to an attractive 18–hole gol course as well as the Accrobaobab

Adventure Park, where you can climb, swing and slide on a series o nets and

ropes amongst the baobab trees.

The Sine Saloum DeltaThe Sine Saloum Delta is a UNESCO World Heritage site, an 180,000 hectarearea that encompasses the Saloum Delta National Park, and a truly stunning parto Senegal. Formed where two rivers converge on the mighty Atlantic Ocean, it’sa region o great diversity consisting o a unique estuarine environment, gloriousbeaches, mangrove swamps, sand islands and ever-shi ting dunes. The regionis a joy to explore, and whether you’re picking your way in a horse-drawnbuggy through the great herds o baobab trees and salt craters dug by the local

women, or quietly navigating the lush greenery o the labyrinthine waterways ina pirogue, you’re sure to absorb the region’s gentle magic.

Thanks to its ecological diversity it is also rich in animal li e, and or birdwatchers, the Delta will certainly not disappoint; home to a stunning variety o birds, suchas amingos, pelicans, herons, gulls, terns, egrets and avocets, many o thehotels will arrange special birding trips to view them in their natural habitats. For the fsherman, it is an angler’s dream with a wealth o fsh in both therivers and the ocean; you might even spot the odd manatee or dolphin in thecoastal lagoons. Many o the hotels have their own boats or pirogues and o er specialised fshing trips, as well as more leisurely sightseeing trips along the rivers

to deserted beaches and local villages. For some hotels in the south o the Sine

Saloum Delta it is easier to y into The Gambia due to shorter trans er times.

Despite numerous trips to The Gambia I’d never

actually made the short journey to Senegal – something I

fnally managed in February 2010. The whole experience

was antastic: the legendary Banjul / Barra erry, the absolu

tranquillity o the hotel at Keur Saloum, the subtle shi t in

culture (not to mention the recourse to my stammering

schoolboy French!), the wide, wide skies o the Sine Saloum

Delta, and on my last day, the dead o night drive into thebush at Baria to witness the amazing coming-to-li e o the

dawn bird chorus. The Gambia and Senegal are so close, and

in many ways the countries share so much, in terms o the

riendliness o the people, the superb ood, and the similar

in the landscapes, and yet just a ew short miles and you can

eel the di erence. Somehow, away rom the tourist zone

The Gambia, all that hustle and bustle drops away. It’s quite

something. Ultimately though, the magic is in the way the tw

destinations complement one another, and now I’ve been, a

twin centre holiday suddenly seems so obvious…

CHARI Y FUND

As a tour operator we have always elt passionately about supporting theGambian community, in particular

through education. Our SchoolDevelopment Fund was set upin 1989 with the aim o building, renovating and equipping schoolsin The Gambia and, together with

the help o our customers, wehave assisted over 100 schoolprojects. We supply the money tobuy materials and, where possible,

the villagers provide labour andcra tsmen. In 2011 we have also

set up a school partnership scheme.Through our strong links with TheGambia, we have helped to link UK and Gambian schools and support

them through the initial stages o apartnership. School partnerships area great opportunity or children romboth countries to develop and learnabout other cultures whilst enhancing

the curriculum.

The Gambia Experience matchesall monies donated by our customersand, or every 100 holidayquestionnaires received, we alsodonate £10. Education is the utureo any country and we are proud tohelp its development in The Gambia.

Although school education rom theage o 7 is o ten ree, parents have toprovide pens, paper, books and evendesks and chairs. I you wish to helpin a small way, pencils, paper, chalk and so on are always welcomed and

will not take up much room in a

suitcase. Some o our clientshave also generously broughtoutgrown and otherwise unwantechildren’s clothing, shoes and toy

We recommend that you see our resort sta locally who can adviyou on distribution, but please bein mind your luggage allowance.
