Preboot execution environment (PXe)Semper Continuity Suite is one of the few solutions that fully leverage Intel’s Preboot Execution Environment (PXE). Semper Continuity Suite works ‘out of the box’ and enables continuous visibility and con-trol over your PCs and servers without requiring the instal-lation of an agent or driver on the target computer. Thanks to the complete PXE support, Semper Continuity Suite oper-ates irrespective of the oper-ating system type or system state and is able to access and repair your PCs and servers within minutes even if they are non-bootable.

Single Instance Storage (SIS) RepositorySemper Continuity Suite offers the most effective disk imaging solution in the mar-ketplace for desktops, lap-tops and servers. Using file based imaging technology, Semper Continuity Suite ena-bles the use of a compressed, encrypted, single instance file store where every unique file is stored once. This means large numbers of images can restored within a very small amount of disk space as only the unique differences found in new images will increase the size of the image store (see diagram). This concept, that is also known as dedupli-cation, not only reduces the

space required to store images by up to 95%, but also reduces the amount of data being cop-ied across the network by 90% which speeds up imag-ing and cuts down on network utilization.

local image cachingOur unique local image cach-ing in conjunction with the single instance storage (SIS) repository creates an envi-ronment where network traf-fic only occurs when updat-ing differences, not the entire image. The local image cache is effectively a section of the hard disk that is unallocated and contains all the files nec-essary to build the system to the given configuration level. The image cache works as a mirror of the server file store in the SIS repository. If updates are made to the image the Semper Continuity Suite rep-licates the updates to the cli-ents via a multicast protocol. This is the key to our rapid repair and re-deployment abilities.

Disaster recovery Semper Continuity Suite is capable of storing a com-plete image of each system’s current configuration with-out requiring vast amounts of disk space. Multiple images of a system can be held by the Semper Continuity Suite server, which allows for rapid

deployment to multiple roll-back points. Images are eas-ily stored off site or replicated to a backup server in a differ-ent location. This provides a site-wide recovery capability to individuals or all clients in a matter of minutes.

Self repair Using its unique local image caching technology, Semper Continuity Suite can auto-matically repair PCs and serv-ers with missing or corrupt

operating system or applica-tion files to a previous working state. When auto-repair is ena-bled, on every reboot Semper Continuity Suite identifies and replaces any missing or dam-aged files. This process usually adds 10-15 seconds to the boot process and, as it does not for-mat the disk like other recov-ery solutions, the user’s data is left intact. • administrator triggered repair: the administra-tor initiates a repair or re-deploys one of the images back to the PC or server.

• Repair all: on every reboot faulty or changed files or applications are replaced and unauthorized software installations are disabled. Filters to the repair proc-ess can be set, e.g. to ignore documents and settings.

• always replace: on every reboot this formats the disk and re-deploys the image, repairing filesystem and partition issues.
