To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world

~Pastor Josh

From the Pastor Autumn is here after a final burst of summer weather. Leaves are begin-ning to turn red, orange, yellow and brown and some are falling. It is time to plant fall bulbs, tubers, and corms so tulips, iris, hyacinths, daffodils and cro-cus will bloom in the springtime. The days grow shorter and cooler. Pumpkins and hayrides will be here soon. October is one of my favorite months of the year. The beauty of God’s Creation in fall splendor is at times beyond easy words. October here at Seminary UMC is a busy time. October will begin with World Communion Sunday and receiving new members on October 1st. Like a family rejoices at the birth or adoption of a child or a marriage into the fami-ly, so God’s people rejoice as our church family grows. October 8th is Bring-a-Friend to Church Sunday where each of us is asked to bring a friend, ac-quaintance, relative and/or neighbor to church and to stay for a dinner. This is an easy way to help someone come to faith, return to faith or take a small step forward in it… Welcoming and loving people are strengths here at Semi-nary. Let’s use this opportunity well. During the weeks, the days are filled with Kids Club, dance classes, Crafty Corner, Country Store, meetings, serv-ing and fellowship. We will end the month on October 29th with having the children from Kid’s Club sing in church and (weather permitting) follow the service with hayrides and other autumn fun. Just like tulips and other bulbs planted in the fall that seem to do nothing over the long winter months, sometimes we do not see the results of our work and our outreaches. But like the bulbs burst into flowers in spring and bloom, the seeds of faith can bloom in their season. A newer hymn, “Hymn of Prom-ise” says it well…

Just a Reminder… Anyone can put a news article in the newsletter. You don’t have to be on the Administrative Board. If there is something going on in the church that others should be aware of, feel free to send Nancy Hartley an article by the 20th of each month at [email protected]. What better way to get information out to the entire church family!

Country Store Fall is in the air! The Country Store has many Halloween and Thanksgiving items for you to choose from. Please come in and shop. On the days that Pastor Josh is in the church he will have a sign in the front yard saying the Country Store is open. This will give you more opportunity to come in and look around. You are always welcome. ~Carolyn Hartley-Johns

Kid’s Club Donation Thank you Carol Johnson for sharing your $100 coupon from Meijer!!! Carol made a purchase at Meijer and received a coupon valued at $100. Then she GAVE that coupon to the church to be used for Kids Club supplies. Over 50 children will benefit from her generosity!

Inter-Church Council News Claudia Houck and the Pastor represented Seminary UMC at the September 17 meeting. Claudia informed the council about the Food Pantry’s move within our building to the fellowship hall storage area on the east side behind the folding green doors which will have less moisture than the current location and be more convenient. No date was set for the move. Senior Meals (sponsored by the Council) at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Thursdays at 12 Noon began September 14 and will be weekly until just before Christmas. Cost is $4 a meal. Sonrise UMC (Roanoke Campus) pastor Randy Samuels will be having major surgery with a six month projected recovery so Mark Hammond from Sonrise Fort Wayne Campus will be helping lead as Randy recovers. Sonrise will have its annual Trunk or treat Chili Cookoff and Festival October 28th @ 5 PM Church of the Brethren will have their annual Pic or Treat during the hours the Town of Roanoke has set on Halloween itself. The next Interchurch Council meeting will be November 14 at 7:00pm at the Church of the Breth-ren following their 5:00pm monthly Tuesday Community Meal.

Email Prayer Chain One of the fastest ways to get information out to a large quantity of people in a short amount of

time is by Email. We would like to start using the Email Prayer Chain as an information high-way to get important information out to as many as possible. If you are not getting the prayer requests and occasional announcements that are sent over email, please email Nancy Hartley

to be added to the list. Feel free to email her at [email protected] or call at 260-672-8316.

Pastor Josh in Michigan October 18th to 25th The pastor will be serving as the island chaplain/community pastor at Beaver Island, Michigan. (Church considers this vacation). There is a small year round population on the island with one Protestant Church where pastors of the different denominations take turns serving. The Johnson kids will be on their fall break and the family has been scheduled for this for almost two years. Tom McElhaney from the Huntington Gideon's will be speaking at both Seminary and Christ’s UMC on Sunday, October 22nd.

Church Membership? What’s That…. We are receiving some new members October 1st on World Communion Sunday. This is a chance to explain a little more about membership. Membership in the United Methodist tradition is not about having arrived, but about becoming a part of the community of faith and taking your next step toward Jesus. John Wesley’s requirement to become a Methodist was “a desire to be saved and flee from the wrath to come…” In the largest sense – membership at Seminary UMC is about becoming part of the church fami-ly. We become a part of our family by being born into it, being adopted into it or marrying into it. In baptism we become part of the Body of Christ. In membership we become part of the local church family. Members… …Need to be baptized or have been baptized …Need to confess Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord …Hold to the Christian faith as contained in the Old & New Testaments & Apostle’s Creed …Be willing to let Jesus take you from who you are and make you into who He wants you to be… …Promise to be loyal to Christ through this congregation of the United Methodist Church and faithfully participate or move toward faithful participation in its ministries through your

A) Prayers B) Presence C) Gifts D) Service E) Witness Someone can become a member by Profession of Faith (which can include those being baptized and/or confirmed), Transfer from another UM congregation, or transfer from a non-UM congregation. For those transferring from another UM congregation no public ceremony or vows are needed since they have already taken place. There are different categories of membership which will be explained in a future article. The tech-nical details are not important, being an official part of the Seminary UMC family can be. We will love you, welcome you and treat you wonderfully whether or not you are a member.
