    Black Forest, Germany

The Black Forest covers a triangular section southwesternGermany, roughly 145 km (90 miles) long and 40 km (25miles) wide. The Feldberg as highest mountain reachesabout 1493 m (5000 feet) - excellent for skiing in winterand hiking or mountain climbing in summer. The name

Black Forest (Schwarzwald) is a little misleading, as theforest is neither darker nor blacker than anywhere else. Infact, the whole area receives considerably more sunshinethan the overall average for the rest of Germany. It is abright, open land of tree-covered mountains, intermittentpine and birch forests and mountains alive with fairytalevillages. There is hardly a section of the Black Forest that islacking in beauty and charm. Weathered great farmhousesdress the landscape.

    Freiburg, Germany

Welcome to Freiburg, sunny capital of the Black Forest, close to the French and Swiss borders. Freiburg is located insouthwest Germany, between the Black Forest and the

Rhine valley. For centuries it has been attracting peoplefrom near and far. Many have come to Freiburg and manyhave stayed. Today, Freiburg is one of the few German citieswhere both the population and the economy are growing. The large number of start-up companies in recent years hashelped to make Freiburg the environmental capital ofGermany. Today, the city of Freiburg has around 200,000inhabitants, among them 30,000 students at the university, polytechnical colleges and the teaching college. Manyresearch institutions also benet from the proximity of theuniversity. Typical: Freiburgs Bchle, little streamsrunning through gullies, are one of the historic old townstrademarks. They are thought to have been originally

designed to supply the city with water, and for sewage.Today, the streams create a pleasant atmosphere and in thesummer entice people of all ages to have a bit of fun. Butbeware - the legend goes that those who accidentally stepinto one of the little streams will end up marrying aFreiburger.

Nestled in the border triangle of Germany, France andSwitzerland, Basel is a city full of surprises. The choice ofleisure facilities available in Basel is great. This is true notonly because of its above-average cultural range, its manyhigh-class museums such as its Kunstmuseum (Museum of

Fine Arts), the Beyeler Foundation, or the Antikenmuseum(Museum of Antiquities). Besides culture, Basel also oersmany other possibilities for amusing oneself: at sports, walking through the old town, or a stroll to the shops in theinner city.

Passenger ships on the Rhine run regular excursionsthroughout the year. Visitors may also stroll through thetown to see works by famous contemporary architects:Gehry, Botta, Diener & Diener, Herzog & de Meuron the lasttwo have their oces in Basel, and Hotz. They all have setnew accents in Basel in recent years.

Basels foundation goes back to the rst century BC, whenthe earliest fortied settlements were built on the Mnster-hgel (Minster Mount)

In the 14th century, Basel liberated itself from its episcopaloverlords, but kept the bishops crook in its coat of arms. Butthat century was also a period of great trials for Basel: rstcame the Black Death, followed in 1356 by a severeearthquake.

One of the great moments in Basels history was the GreatCouncil of Christendom, held in the city from 1431 to1448, which brought the city to world attention. One of the

results was the founding of Basels university, ceremoniallyopened in 1460. In 1501, Basel joined the Swissconfederation.
