Organisational Structure– leaders of the whole project:
• Elmar Mittler (SUB Göttingen)• Bernd Wegner (TU Berlin)
– additional partner:• Zentralblatt für Mathematik (FIZ Karlsruhe)
– editors of the database:• Keith Dennis (Cornell University)• Bernd Wegner (TU Berlin)
– supervised by EMS– editorial support from more than 150 volunteers
Seminario SINM
What is ERAM? bibliographic metadata & digitization of fulltext for bibliographic metadata & digitization of fulltext for
classical mathematical literatureclassical mathematical literature– JFM: Jahrbuch über die Fortschritte der Mathematik– capture the content of the JFM in a database– scan selected items covered by the JFM for storage
in an electronic archive– extend the content of the archive by other selection
methods and provides links to the database– funded by DFG (German Research Foundation)
Seminario SINM
ERAM ideas
– longevity of research results in mathematics– better availability in electronic archives– access through literature databases– preservation of documents which suffer from the
deterioration of the paper as consequence of age
Seminario SINM
History of JFM– was founded 1868 by the mathematicians Carl
Ohrtmann and Felix Müller– their intention was ...to provide a tool for those, who
are not able to follow all publications on the comprehensive field of mathematics, and to gain a general overview about the development of the science ...help the active scientist to find out known facts
– JFM appeared in 68 issues from 1868 until 1942
Seminario SINM
History of JFM cont.
– total amount of 200.000 units– reviews of all mathematical publications from that
period– for every year one volume– edited by Prussian Academy of Science– published by de Gruyter
Seminario SINM
Why JFM– today some original publications are still valuable
sources for mathematical research
– but not many researchers, libraries of universities, high schools and research institutes have access to the complete JFM
to create a database of the JFM and a digital archive of the most important publications of this time
Seminario SINM
JFM Database– digitization of the printed issues of the JFM– enrichment of the original data by mathematicians
and librarians:• classification regarding the Mathematical Subject
Classification 2000
• description by English keywords
• evaluation and selection for the digital archive
• supplements to the bibliographic data (e.g. in different forms of the name of the authors or various types of journal titles)
Seminario SINM
JFM Digital Archive
– scanning the relevant publications (up to 20% of all publications)
– linking to the scanned documents starting from the JFM database
– presentation and long-time-storage in a document-management system
Seminario SINM
Input Activities
– development of an appropriate field structure– keyboarding of the content using the TEX-code
(formula display)– raw division according subjects– distribution to librarians for standardisation– distribution to voluntary experts for enhancements
Seminario SINM
Who digitizes?• GDZGDZ: Göttinger DigitalisierungsZentrum - The Center
for Retrospective Digitization, Göttingen State and University Library (Germany)
• is part of an initiative to build a German digital research library
• coordinate national efforts towards standardization in various fields (e.g. digital conversion, online access, bibliographic description)
• financial support from the State Ministry for Science and Culture
Seminario SINM
Seminario SINM
Standardisation & Enhancements
– author identification – source identification– references to library holdings – English title translations – classification according to MSC– assignment of keywords– comments on the scientific impact of the items– ranking for scanning

GDZ Search• also possible to search directly in the GDZ Document
Server: http://www-gdz.sub.uni-goettingen.de/agora/html/docs/http://www-gdz.sub.uni-goettingen.de/agora/html/docs/• define an Advanced Search
Document Types = Journal
Digital Collections = Mathematica
search in one periodical (e.g. Mathematische Annalen) in all volumes with Table of Contents for each volume
Seminario SINM
The Archive - Contents• articles recommended by the JFM-experts• handbooks and encyclopaedias (out of print)• dissertations• selected monographs (out of print)• complete sets of back volumes of journals
(Mathematische Annalen, Math. Zeitschrift)• print-only back volumes of currently dual journals
(Beiträge zur Algebra und Geometrie et al.)
Seminario SINM
Time Schedule
• end of database input: June 2001• amount of data in the database: raw data 78%, enhanced
data 30%• raw and edited data freely accessible in the web• enhancement of data - living project • scanning of documents immediately according to the
licenses given by editors• soliciting for new journals to participate - open project
Seminario SINM
Future Actions• combine the content with other digital archives (JSTOR,
DIEPER-partners etc., Cornell) to a distributed digital archive in mathematics
• negotiate a license to digitise a selection of Russian mathematical journals
• develop an automatic indexing system to be applied to the documents not handled by voluntary experts
• extend the offer of searchable text via OCR
