Introductiony

The BLUE EYES technology aims at creatingcomputational machines that have perceptual andsensory ability like those of human beings.

yIt uses non-obtrusive sensing method, employingmost modern video cameras and microphones toidentify the users actions through the use of imparted sensory abilities .

y The machine can understand what a user wants, where he is looking at, and even realize hisphysical or emotional states.

The term BLUE EYES

y BLUE in the term stands for Bluetooth, which enables

reliable wireless communication.

y EYES, because the eye movement enables us to obtaina lot of interesting and important information.

INPUTS USEDy Heart pulse rate

y Facial expressions: Eye brows and Mouth linesprimarily

y Eye movements: As a pointing device and also to

determine the emotion.

y Voice

AFFECTIVE COMPUTINGThe process of making emotional computers with

sensing abilities is known as affective computing.

Steps Include:-

y Giving Sensing Abilities

y Detecting human emotions.

y Respond properly.

METHODSAffect Detection

y Detection of emotional states from facial expressions

y Most of the information is extracted from the positionof the eye brows and the corners of the mouth.

y Then processed to arrive at the operators emotionalstate.

Emotion MouseMouse is embedded with sensors that can sense the

physiological attributes like:

y Temperaturey Body Pressure

y Pulse Rate

y Touching Style etc.

The computer determines the users emotional statesfrom these inputs.

Emotion Mousey R osalind Picard (1997) describes why emotions are

important to the computing community

y There are two aspects of affective computing: giving thecomputer the ability to detect emotions and giving thecomputer the ability to express emotions

y Not only are emotions crucial for rational decision makingas Picard describes, but emotion detection is an importantstep to an adaptive computer system

y An adaptive, smart computer system has been driving our efforts to detect a person¶s emotional state.

y An important element of incorporating emotion into computing isfor productivity for a computer user

y A study (Dryer & Horowitz, 1997) has shown that people withsimilar personalities collaborate well

y By matching a person¶s emotional state and the context of theexpressed emotion, over a period of time the person¶spersonality is being exhibited

y Therefore, by giving the computer a longitudinal understandingof the emotional state of its user, the computer could adapt aworking style which fits with its user¶s personality

Manual and Gaze Input Cascaded (Magic)

Pointing

y This work explores a new direction in utilizing eyegaze for computer input. Gaze tracking has longbeen considered as an alternative or potentiallysuperior pointing method for computer input

y Two specific MAGIC pointing techniques, oneconservative and one liberal, were designed, analyzed, and implemented with an eye tracker.

y There are two fundamental shortcomings to theexisting gaze pointing techniques, regardless of thematurity of eye tracking technology

y First, given the one-degree size of the fovea and

the subconscious jittery motions that the eyes

constantly produce, eye gaze is not precise enoughto operate UI widgets such as scrollbars,

hyperlinks, and slider handles

y Second, and perhaps more importantly, the eye, as

one of our primary perceptual devices, has not

evolved to be a control organ

y The liberal and the conservative MA GICpointing techniques offer the followingpotential advantages

Reduction of manual stress and fatigue, since the crossscreen long-distance cursor movement is eliminated frommanual control

Practical accuracy level. In comparison to traditional puregaze pointing whose accuracy is fundamentally limited by the nature of eye movement, the MA GIC pointing techniqueslet the hand complete the pointing task, so they can be asaccurate as any other manual input techniques

A more natural mental model for the user. The user does nothave to be aware of the role of the eye gaze. To the user, pointing continues to be a manual task, with a cursorconvenientlyappearing where it needs to be

The IBM Almaden Eye Tracker

y In comparison to the system reported in earlystudies, this system is much more compact andreliable

y

When the light source is placed on-axis with thecamera optical axis, the camera is able to detect thelight reflected from the interior of the eye, and theimage of the pupil appears bright

y This effect is often seen as the red-eye in flashphotographs when the flash is close to the cameralens

Implementing Magic Pointing

yThe MAGIC pointing program takes data fromboth the manual input device (of any type, such as

a mouse) and the eye tracking system running

either on the same machine or on another machine

connected via serial port

y R aw data from an eye tracker can not be directly

used for gaze-based interaction, due to noise from

image processing, eye movement jitters, and

samples taken during saccade (ballistic eye

movement) periods

Experimental Designy A standard mouse was first considered to be the

manual input device in the experiment

y Another device suitable for MA GIC pointing is atouchpad.

y Subjects were asked to point and click at targetsappearing in random order

y If the subject clicked off-target, a miss was logged butthe trial continued until a target was clicked

The Simple User Interest Tracker (SUITOR )

y By observing the Webpage a netizen is browsing, theSUITOR  can help by fetching more information at hisdesktop

yBy simply noticing where the user¶s eyes focus on thecomputer screen, the SUITOR  can be more precise indetermining his topic of interest

y SUITOR  knows where you are looking, what

applications you are running, and what Web pages youmay be browsing

Conclusion

y The BLUE EYES technology ensures a convenient

way of simplifying the life by providing more

delicate and user friendly facilities in computing

devices

y Now that we have proven the method, the next step

is to improve the hardware

y Instead of using cumbersome modules to gather

information about the user, it will be better to use

smaller and less intrusive units
