The Rector Major of the
Salesians, Fr. Ángel Fernández
Artime, after careful
discernment and having heard
the opinion of the General
Council, has appointed
Fr. Steven Shafran Provincial
of the Saint Philip the Apostle
Province of the Eastern United
States and Canada for the six
years 2015-2021.
His inauguration is scheduled for July 1.
Steven Shafran was born on February 22, 1956 in Pas-
saic in the United States. He entered the Salesian Noviti-
ate of Newton in 1975, and made his first profession on
September 1 of the following year. He made his perpetual
profession in Rome on September 12,1982 and was
ordained priest in Philadelphia on May 5, 1985.
He was Vice-Rector of the Community in Marrero and
later Director of the Salesian Houses of Colombus,
Ramsey and Washington.
From 1997 to 2006 he was Provincial Councillor and
Delegate for Formation of the US Eastern Province.
"We thank Fr Steven for the faith and generous spirit with
which he has accepted this appointment and we promise
to accompany him in the coming months of preparation"
said Fr Thomas Dunne, the present Provincial.
We in Toronto add our own appreciation and assurance
of prayers for Fr. Steven, our new Provincial superior, and
for Fr. Thomas Dunne who has served us so well since
2009.
