1. Three-dimensional digital map systems
SINTEF IKT have developed unique technology to build real-time three-dimensional digital mapping systems
High competence and skills within applied mathematics, geomatics, cartography and computer graphics
Based on efficient algorithms and data structures for digital terrain modeling, image compression, map rendering and display

Applied Mathematics
Benefits of three-dimensional digital map systems
Present the map in a three-dimensional natural perspective using digital elevation models, high-resolution remote sensing images and 3D models
Coupling with existing map data bases and web technology this technology provides the opportunity to produce the next generation dynamic and interactive 3D map systems
A powerful tool to provide complex geospatial information to end-users in a more efficient and intuitive manner
An increasing need among decision makers, politicians and press for better visualization tools

Nyttig å kunne se båtens posisjon i 3D kartet

The overall objective is development of new technology (models and tools) to improve safety related to maritime navigation
Partial objectives: Develop the next generation map system for maritime navigation Provide more readable and understandable sea maps Contribute to international standardization efforts for development of three-
dimensional sea maps
Challenges Investigate and explore the use of 3D technology, detailed three-dimensional terrain
models) to improve navigation safety Develop a 3D sea-map model based on a digital terrain model (onshore/offshore) Build a three-dimensional sea-map system for use in maritime navigation
Presentation of a RTD initiative within the area of maritime information technology
24
Applied Mathematics
Key features of the system: Based on a new three-dimensional sea-map model including
detailed seafloor models digital terrain models on-shore (islands and costal zone area) 3D models of sea-marks, light-houses, buoys, etc
A 3D map visualization view (main map view ) New set of navigational services based on 3D technology and the 3D sea map model Real-time access to map updates and navigation critical information
25
Applied Mathematics
Several providers of chart plotter systems have already extended their products with 3D capability (3D visualization of sea floor)
The initiative has received positive feedback from “NHD”, “Innovasjon Norge” and “Sjøkartverket”
The project will confirm Norway's position as a leading nation within maritime information technology
From old 2D sea charts to more readable and understandable 3D sea charts. It is only a matter of time...
If not Norway who else??

Further progress SINTEF are now seeking partnership from the maritime IT industry, research
institutes, public and governmental institutions.... Finish a project draft (end of Mars 2004) Arrange a seminar discussing the outline and content of the project proposal
