News from Selsey Care Homes

Here are some photos of our special residents - and a few words………Though lockdowns and restrictions halted other ‘normal’ activities and events, we at The Old Malthouse Care Home still had plenty to celebrate with two big birthdays!

Firstly, our oldest resident, Jean, turned 101 years old and she certainly seemed to enjoy her special day - as it took her a day in bed afterwards to rest (who can blame her!).Then, our oldest gentleman, Bob, celebrated his 100th birthday. Though he did enjoy his birthday drinks and cake, the highlight was his card from the Queen - as he couldn’t quite believe he had received one!

Mary (Activities) & Emma (Manager) Tenchley Manor Nursing Home is teaming up with the Selsey Care Shop to provide Tenchley Team Up. If you would like to contact our residents and build up relationships by being a pen friend, please send your letters to: Tenchley Team Up, The Selsey Care Shop, 121 High Street, Selsey, PO20 0QB.

The current theme is Summertime memories, whether it was a holiday abroad or spending time on Selsey beach we would love to hear from you.

Kristina (Activities Coordinator)

Selsey DefibrillatorsIt is good to know that we have several Public Access Defibrillators (PADs) here in Selsey if ever the need should arise.They are situated in various locations around the town and are available 24/7. They are sited in large and secure yellow boxes and fixed to the outside of buildings.How to use a PADIf a 999 call is made, the South East Coast Ambulance Service call-taker will assess the situation and, where necessary, the caller will be given the location of the nearest PAD and the code to unlock the box. Keep the telephone line to the call-taker open so that further advice or help can be given. Make sure you have the code clearly in your mind before heading off for the nearest PAD, as without it you will not be able to open the box. The box contains a Smart Defibrillator which will tell you what to do and when to do it. With the line kept open, the call-taker will be there to help.Where to find a PAD

Brains of older people are slow because they know so much. People do not decline mentally with age; it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have so much more information in their brains.Scientists believe also that this makes you hard of hearing as it puts pressure on your inner ear. Also, older people go into another room to get something and when they get there, they stand there wondering what they came for. It is not a memory problem; it is nature’s way of making older people do more exercises.

Selsey PavilionYou all know this iconic building in the heart of the High Street. Now known as The Selsey Pavilion, originally Selsey Hall, it was constructed in 1913 on the site of a former bakehouse.With its striking cement plaster art deco inspired facade, the Pavilion is a rare and uniquely original early 20th Century music hall, cinema, theatre and community hub. Much of the Pavilion remains as it was in the 1920s when playwright R. C. Sherriff joined the cast of the Selsey Players for their production of his world-famous First World War play ‘Journey’s End’.In its heyday, it was a year-round community hub featuring film, theatre and live music, dinner dances, amateur boxing, auctions and even pop-up court hearings.The final curtain fell in the early 1970s but in recent years the Pavilion has hosted several plays staged by Arts Dream Selsey, including The End of The Journey, Tonight at the Pavilion… Charlie Chaplin and Journey’s End to mark the centenary of the 1918 armistice.The Selsey Pavilion Trust, a charity founded by local residents in 2017, is working to raise awareness of the Selsey Pavilion and undertake the necessary steps towards its acquisition and ultimate restoration as a multi-functional community hub and it has recently received significant backing from the Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF).The AHF exists to help communities find enterprising ways to revitalise the old buildings they love. The grant, totalling £15,000, will support developing a robust community-led feasibility study, business plan and fundraising strategy, an important stage if the Trust’s aspirations of returning the Pavilion to community use are to be realised.

Rather than asking for donations to support their efforts, the Selsey Pavilion Trust ask that you buy one of their prints. 100% of the proceeds of every sale goes to the Trust. These are available at Chaplins Coffee Shop, Raycrafts and Country Gardens as well as via their websitewww.selseypavilion.org.

The Selsey Pavilion Trust is gathering memories of the Pavilion and would love to receive your stories and pictures to include on their website. If you would like to get in touch and share your memories, please email [email protected]

Welcome to Seal IslandAs you know Selsey’s name derives from the Anglo-Saxon meaning ‘Seal Island’ and many of us have had the privilege of seeing Selsey’s very own seal ‘Trevor’.

Well now, five seal fibreglass structures form an arts trail through the town celebrating the town and its heritage. The five seals were designed and painted by Chichester College students and were funded by a public art grants secured by Selsey Town Council. The seals all serve a purpose in the town, providing seating, bike racks, a bug hotel and a working telescope. Each Seal on this trail uniquely covers a different aspect of Selsey and they are all fitted with a QR Code encouraging us to discover more about their topics on www.destinationselsey.co.uk.

The In Remembrance Seal is at East Beach Pond and forms a seat for contemplation and remembering Selsey’s history of service;

The Sea Life Seal is based at East Beach, adjacent to the park, forming a bike rack and celebrating Selsey being a top diving destination and Selsey’s renowned crab and lobster; The Bug Hotel Seal is based at Hillfield Park and the children at the Seal Academy and Medmerry Schools created the ‘bug rooms within the Seal;The Sir Patrick Moore and Selsey’s Dark Skies Seal is based at Marine Beach and has a free working telescope;

The Selsey Pavilion Seal is at the Selsey Centre and forms a bike rack.

This leads on nicely to our next article………….
