Rock bolts Slope stabilisation

Rock bolts are short, low capacity reinforcement, comprising a bar fixed into the rock and, if required, tensioned to a predetermined load.

The Ischebeck Titan rock bolt consists of a drill bitattached to a hollow steel tendon, which is drilled, installed and grouted at the same time, allowingground improvement, increased productivity andeconomics.

Rock bolts are commonly used throughout the civilengineering and tunnelling industries (especiallyNATM). They are used to improve the stability andload bearing characteristics of a rock mass.

Within the civil engineering industry, Ischebeck Titanrock bolts are used for fixing rock netting, cliff/slopestabilisation, stanchion bases and rock fences. Rockbolts are also used in structural repairs on retainingwalls, bridge spandrel walls and tunnels.

In the tunneling industry, Ischebeck Titan rock boltsare used for horizontal fore-poling, slope stabilisationat the tunnel portal and for anchoring large sectiontunnels with high side walls.

Brighton Marina

The chalk cliffs which tower above BrightonMarina became progressively unstable over anumber of years, ultimately resulting in a rockfall. A scheme was designed which incorporatedboth permanent soil nails and rock bolts. Thesewere used to stabilise the cliff and hold the rockfall netting in place. The near vertical rock facemeant installation of the rock bolts had to becarried out by an abseil team.

Reston Cutting

Reston Cutting is located on the East CoastMainline. The rock bolts formed part of a cuttingstabilisation scheme which involved installingsome 4250m2 of chainlink rock fall mesh.Approximately 150 no. 3 metre crest rock boltswere installed in 1 metre lengths using couplings. The top detail comprised an integral 30kNeyebolt which allowed 3-way connection for cablestays supporting the rock netting. Ischebeck Titan30/11 black rock bolts were installed by hand intorock.

Edinburgh

Due to an increase in the load requirements on amasonry wall in Edinburgh, Ischebeck Titan rockbolts were installed in permanent works tostrengthen the structure.Approximately 30 no. 9 metre long 30/11 blackrock bolts were installed using a 95mm hardenedclay drill bit.

Due to aesthetics, the cores were replaced oncethe rock bolts had been installed to retain thestructure’s original appearance.

Inverness to Wick

An elevated rail structure was showing signs ofcracking and bulging. Approximately 25 no. 40/16combi coated rock bolts were installed.

The 100 year-old structure was approved for afurther 120 years of service life by Scotrail.

Lightweight air rigs were used to install the rockbolts which resulted in the planned six-weekprogramme being completed within three weeks.

• Excellent production rates• 120 year design life• Lightweight equipment in residential area

Wallace Monument

For some years, the Wallace Monument inStirlingshire had been threatened with damageby the possibility of rock falls. A design wasprepared to protect the monument with a rock fallfencing system. The fencing system comprised ahorizontal double wire/strand configuration, coupled with wire meshing, supported bystanchions. The stanchion base plates were fixedusing Ischebeck Titan 30/11 rock bolts. Theinstallation had minimal disturbance to theenvironment.

Geotextile sock system Rock Bolts for tunnel construction

The Ischebeck Titan geotextile sock systemeliminates potential problems relating to bondstrength and corrosion protection which oftenoccur where cavities or fissures in the groundcause excessive loss of grout

The system can be used in conjunction with rockbolts in poor/fissured rock or as part of masonrystrengthening schemes, acting as thereinforcement.

Due to the control of the grout during installation, the system is also suitable for use inenvironmentally sensitive areas such as canaland harbour walls.

The method involves drilling the hole with a‘down-the-hole’ hammer and installing a casing.Once the casing is in place, the geotextile socksystem can be installed to the design depth.

A geotextile sock is attached to the IschebeckTitan bar (which can be perforated) and closedwith jubilee clips or tie wraps. Larger depths canbe accomodated by coupling additional lengthsof bar and geotextile sock. The assembly is then

inserted into the cased hole and a grout mix isinjected through the hollow bar at 8-12 barpressure to fill the sock. The pressure forces thewater from the grout mix out of the geotextile’sfine mesh, leaving the cement to cure almostinstantly within the sock.

Once filled with grout, the geotextile sock mouldsitself into the voids/fissures achieving amechanical bond.

The principle behind the New Austrian TunnellingMethod (NATM) is the creation of a temporarydistribution of the rock/soil pressure around thetunnel excavation until it is stabilised by the finalconcrete lining.

Ischebeck Titan rock bolts are ideally suited tothe NATM where bolts longer than 3 metres needto be installed in loose material (i.e. glacialdeposits). The rock bolts anchor within thematerial’s layers to create a shear-resistantbearing ring for the rock.

They can also be used for horizontal piling orfore-piling by jet-grouting as well as slopestabilisation at the tunnel portal.
